Applications :: Using Punch Holes In My Encryption Scheme?

Feb 10, 2010

I have some things I want to keep very safe. It is not pornography (i.e. kiddie porn), nor is it illegally downloaded media files.

Imagine if I had caught a local official doing something in public that was extremely bad, and I wanted to release the pictures anonymously to our local paper and did not want the police to seize my computer and prove it was me. This is not the situation, but it is the type of stuff I want to keep extremely safe.

Mac Pro :: How Do You Get The Rubber Dampeners Thru The Holes

Nov 23, 2010

So I removed my 4th bay's tray and it seems the dampeners are not thru the holes and unless you get them half way thru the holes you cannot slide back the tray because the screws are too high and make contact with the surface.

When you have nothing to screw them into what is the best way of getting the rubber dampeners thru the holes so the screws will sit low enough in the tray to reinsert the tray?

So my final tray #4 has no drive attached but those rubber stopper things aren't easy to get thru the holes. Right now the only way I can put my track is to remove the screws entirely and keep them outside the case. I'd rather them insert into the holes of the sled that's empty but for I need those darn grey rubber things to go thru the holes.

MacBook Pro :: Secure Mbp Using DVI Port Screw Holes?

Aug 23, 2009

I'm wondering if there are any products out there can secure my MacBook Pro by using one or two of the screw holes on either side of the DVI port.

I bought a Kensington MicroSaver keyed lock even though MacBook Pro users said it didn't work. I'm once again confirming that... The Kensington lock port on the MB and MBP are totally useless. There are lots of products of this nature out there for VGA/serial ports, but I have found nothing for DVI.

This is the only product I found that does what I want, but it isn't available for sale anywhere:

Applications :: Encryption Software With Auto Destruct Feature?

Jul 17, 2010

I have been using the encrypted image making for sensitive files, but I am looking for something as separate iOs (yes I know it's not the right subforum but since the mods in their infinite wisdom have split the software subforums...) or OS X software that will also allow for an autodestruct feature to be feasible after a set number of failed password attempts, because there is no use really of an encrypted image if one can run brute force ad infinitum. Sure non lexicografical passwords will fair better but how well it's anyone's guess.

Applications :: Finding Best Mac And IPhone Photo Locker/Encryption/Vault

Sep 4, 2010

I have some very seductive pictures of my wife that I want to secure in an unhackable* program on my iPhone and Mac so that they never see the light of day unless I enter the correct password.

Obviously my wife isn't going to be looking on my phone (she let me take the pictures with the phone in the first place)...my concern is if the phone is ever lost or stolen...I want those pictures totally unreachable if my phone ever winds up in the wrong hands.

I know that there is a very good program called "Folder Lock" for PC....but they don't have a corresponding Mac version (they do have an iPhone app, but then what do I do with the corresponding pictures that are on my Mac that Folder Lock doesn't have a desktop app for)?

So, anybody know of a Photo Locker/Encrypter/Vault for both the Mac and the iPhone?...don't necessarily care if they are the some company, just want end-to-end security so that if either one goes down, I have a backup on the other unit....but both are hackproof* if ever stolen or lost.

I should clarify one thing about my Mac requirements,...I'm actually looking for an application specifically designed for this exact purpose (as opposed to slick Terminal ".folder" fixes that would hide the folder, but in no way make it secure). So, an app with a Password is a Must, preferably with strong encryption.

Hardware :: Unable To Assemble Super-drive And Enclosure / Holes Don't Match Up

Mar 23, 2009

I have just received a Firewire enclosure for a SuperDrive I bought months ago from the same company, Other World Computing. I was told that they would work together, but now that I'm assembling it, I find that the tiny holes on the drive (very near the edge of the drive, and only two on each side of the top, not the many more that the enclosure seems to indicate should be there. In addition, the holes in the drive and the ones in the enclosure don't match up. The enclosure also is very long for the drive, even allowing for room to attach the ribbon cable and other cables inside.

I have now spoken with three different people at OWC, and nobody knows why this is or how to work out the problem, except to offer me another, less desirable enclosure that they assure me will fit the drive. (I didn't mention that the drive is an older model and that they no longer carry it.) Well, I was assured that the one they have already sent me was just fine for my drive, so you can 't blame me for being a bit wary of the assurances for the other enclosure.

The drive fits very snugly in the enclosure and doesn't seem to shift around. If I replaced a metal piece around the front of the drive that I took off to make it fit more flush with the front of the enclosure, it would be an even tighter fit. It wouldn't look as nice, but it could be done.

My question is I whether I can dispense with putting in those screws, which are meant to secure the drive within the case and keep it from shifting around. (The screws meant to attach the back panel of the enclosure, the one with the internal cables, and the holes in the enclosure will fit together fine, because they are both part of the same thing.)

I would really love to move on with this and not try out anything elselet alone a less good driveif I can.I wonder what you think.I have only a short while before I must make a decision, and I'm leaving for a visit to part of my family in about two weeks. Any input is very welcome.

OS X :: Won't Create Partition Scheme (encrypted)

Jan 18, 2010

I'm trying to set up a new partition scheme for all my storage. I just purchased another drive and will buy a 1 or 1.5TB drive next week. I'd like to encrypt certain partitions. Please read on...

Hopefully someone can help me. This is my current setup:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/disk0s2 465Gi 407Gi 58Gi 88% /
devfs 113Ki 113Ki 0Bi 100% /dev

Plato is my iPod - I use 40GB for music, the rest for backing up files.
Wittgenstein is my backup. I exclude backups of ~/Music, another big DIR and ~/Movies and it has room to backup everything else.

I also have an 8GB USB stick that I've named "mnemosyne".

What I am purchasing. I am waiting for my new 500GB 7200 drive to arrive, which will replace the current 500GB main drive. I also purchased a 32GB flash drive.

What I'm getting in the near future. I'm purchasing a 1TB or 1.5TB internal drive and building an external HDD from it within the next two weeks. I'd like to split it to 500GB for backups, the rest for media storage. I'd like to encrypt my current /System dir, my ~/Documents and all preferences from my my Applications.

I've heard filevault is prone to errors. Is this true? Are there any other full disk encryption options for mac? Would dm-crypt work through macports without corrupting my filesystem? Can I use truecrypt and create an encrypted container of say (what is now) ~/Documents

Creating the partition scheme

Questions

1) Can I resize a partition once I've created it if there's physical space left on the HDD?
2) Should I leave some space without a partition? Or should I just name it something benign and use it as a "dropbox"
3) What options do I have for encryption on a mac?
4) Is filevault prone to errors? Any benchmarking tests out there?
5) Can I use dm-crypt through macports and have a FDE setup that won't fail because it's through macports and not native? In other words, I realize all encryption schemes can fail, but I'd like to minimize risk.
6) How would I have some movies on my main HDD and others on the external volume? Is that possible? Or would I need to create two partitions for that? So, say, I want to store 40GB of everything that is currently in ~/Movies on my main HDD. Just create a partition for that, and then another partition on the external volume at 210GB?
7) How do I create separate partitions in mac?
8) How do I easily mount all partitions from all hard drives?
9) Is rsync and a script my best option for encrypting backups since Timemachine has no security whatsoever for backups?
10) What filesystem should I use? (I'm only using OS X on my macbook)
11) Any sample partition map you could share with me that will help me build this properly?
12) How do I set up a link so Mac OS X will read the partitions like they are now and display over on the left side of Finder.app as they show now? I.e. a list of Desktop, $username, Applications, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures

Intel Mac :: Choosing External Drive Partition Scheme

Feb 15, 2012

I have a 1 TB LaCie drive that I am currently using with a MBR partition scheme. It has two partitions: one for time machine and one for windows. What I want is to use this drive to hold my time machine back ups in one partition for Lion, which I am about to switch to and install on the iMac internal drive, my windows stuff in one partition, and a third partition in which I would put a clone (CCC) of my current internal drive (Snow Leopard) that I could boot from when desired.

This would enable me to run Lion normally from the iMac's internal drive, switch to the windows partition (holding down the option key when powering on) on occasion when I want to work in a windows only app, and using the same option key on power on trick, boot into Snow Leopard when I need to use old, apps that won't run on Lion. For this, I assume that I should use the GUID partition scheme. Am I right? Is there a better way to accomplish my goal?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Change From Master Boot Record To GUID Scheme?

Jun 6, 2012

I've downloaded Lion and the first "complaint" the installation software has is that neither my Mac hard drive nor Time Machine drive uses the GUID partition scheme. The software instructs me to use Disk Utility to select the appropriate format but Disk Utility states that I can't re-size the partition because it uses the Master Boot Record scheme. Further, it tells me that the drive can't be erased because it's the start-up disk.

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed on my MacBook (Core 2 Duo, 4 GB). The Mac HD has 220GB available.I waited for Lion to be reasonably fault-free and carefully looked at Lion's requirements only to find out too late about this GUID scheme business. I haven't seen anything about this requirement until I tried to install. I have great fear of re-formatting the drive as that always seems to be the beginning of many problems that take months to resolve. Maybe the choices are to forget Lion or get a new drive and format it to GUID before restoring from my Time Machine

Final Cut Pro X :: File Naming Scheme Change When Importing AVCHD Files

Jul 1, 2014

After updating to 10.1.2 it seems that FCPX now uses a different file naming scheme on imported AVCHD files.

Previously on import, it would use a file naming scheme based on date ie. '2014-06-14 10_49_47 (id).mov' etc. which is great for me as I could see exactly what date & time that clip was created at a glance in the event viewer, also when a camera on a shoot had it's time out by an hour due to an incorrect daylight saving setting, I could use easily go through the clips tweaking the time in the file name & then they would show in the correct order in FCPX.

Now 10.1.2 just imports the clips using the useless file naming scheme of 'clip #1.mov' etc ...

Any way to get FCPX to import using the old naming scheme - or am I now boned if I have a camera set incorrectly ...

OS X :: Apple Devices And WEP Encryption

Nov 30, 2010

In advance, a disclaimer: Please don't lecture me about how we shouldn't be using WEP...I'm fully aware of just how bad WEP sucks from a network security standpoint. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to change it at the moment. Now that that's over with...why is it that NONE of the Apple devices I've used have ever worked correctly on the WEP network here? Where I work, we've got all Cisco equipment, but unfortunately, we're still on WEP. We've got hundreds of Windows devices that operate just fine with it. On the other hand, on every Mac portable device I've had since I started working here 7 years ago, it's been an issue. I enter all the information correctly when I try to add the network as an Airport profile, and one of two things happens: It prompts me for the password over and over. It takes the information like everything is ok, but then it doesn't connect (no "bars") Every once in a while I will get a device to connect and work, but it's usually only temporary...it'll just stop working all of a sudden. It doesn't have to do with proximity to the access points; believe me, I checked. I'm positive I'm entering everything correctly, as I actually work for the IT Department here. I've had numerous portables through the years including various MacBook/PowerBook Pros, iMacs, and now an iPad which also doesn't want to work on our WEP network. We have four buildings here, which are technically four separate networks, all configured with the same type of access points, and Apple devices don't connect properly in any of them. Being that we have plenty of Windows-based devices, as well as Android portable devices that work on our WEP network, it would appear that the problem is isolated to Apple.

Is anyone else here still stuck using WEP (perhaps at your workplace), and has anyone else had similar problems to what I'm having here? What did you do to resolve them? I'm dying to get my iPad on the wireless here, but it just won't cooperate.

OS X :: Time Machine Encryption

Oct 26, 2007

I won't get my copy until later today, but I thought I would ask this question as I can't see it listed anywhere here. Time Machine is a security *plus* in the same way that all backups are. Without encryption turned on however, it's actually a security *minus* because it creates an easily readable, detailed, time-stamped, trail of all your actions at the computer. For that reason I won't be using it unless the encryption also works well. However, it seems that the system comes with it turned off by default, and I was wondering if anyone had turned on encryption and if there was a performance hit associated with that.
