I know that if you hold down Option + Shift, it allows you to fine tune the volume. This is absolutely awesome, and I'd actually love if this was the default behaviour. I was so sure that I had come across an app that would do this, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Hopefully it wasn't just my memory playing tricks. Anyone know of an app or script that'll do this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).
View 1 Replies View RelatedAnyway, I love my mac, but as this is my first one I have noticed the speed has gone from 30 seconds to about 65-80 seconds per boot. I have a 320GB hard disc in the iMac with 200GB free. Also have a WD MyBook 500GB connected through my AirPort Extreme. I also noticed the speed of applications loading is quite slow in comparison to the nearly instant loading times when i first got the iMac.
With my PC i just run ultimate defrag and norton + ad aware and its as good as new. What do you do with a mac? Just because there are so many viruses for the PC does not mean that there can be some for the mac? There must be some kind of software for degragging and virus checking etc.
I'm currently using the previous generation Mac Mini as my HTPC, and I use a combination of VGA (w/ an adapter) and optical out to feed my A/V receiver. It works great, but it would be even better to use HDMI for better cable management, my receiver's on-screen display and HDCP support (for iTunes "HD" TV shows). I tried using a Monoprice HDMI adapter, and it worked, except that MacOS only allows me to enable/disable overscan completely and didn't let me tweak the amount of overscan. Couldn't get SwitchResX to work with my Samsung LCD TV after many tries. Didn't want to use JustScan either since my DirectTV receiver doesn't work well with it (and didn't want to enable/disable JustScan depending on my source). So, does anyone know if the new Mac Mini supports fine-tuning of overscan?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have updated to the latest version of iTunes and, the internet radio connection worked for a couple of days. Now, when I click on the arrow/triangle to the left of the radio category that I want (and any other in the list, I've found), iTunes just sits and churns trying to connect to the radion tuning service. For instance, if I want the News/Talk Radio category, the message displayed is "Contacting tuning service...Refreshing News/Talk radio". And nothing happens. It never connects. Ever. I have tried all the usual things: restarting iTunes, restarting my computer (MacBook), checking the internet connection (absolutely no problem there), etc.

While Apple tries to figure out what's wrong I came upon a great workaround for those of us that like the radio feature of iTunes. This actually doesn't take long either.When trying to expand the categories you get the error "An error occurred while contacting the radio tuning service.Check your Internet connection, or try again later." This happens enough to think that the service is completely broken. Actually, it seems intermittent. Try clicking it a few times. you WILL GET THROUGH. When you do get there, highlight all of the stations(or just the ones you want), create a playlist (I use the name of the category as I take the entire list), and paste into the playlist. You can then play the stations EVERY TIME from the playlist. Works perfectly.
It doesn't seem to have anything to do with what version of iTunes you have or what plugin you have. I have seen this on over 600 computers - Windows & MAC - and the workaround is 100%.

Recently, my newer (last year) iMac probably running 10.5 started speaking and wont shut up... there is no obvious way to turn it off. I usually figure problems out myself but there are no system preferences that effect it. I even changed the voice in preferences as a test and it is still the same guy reading everything clicked in all applications except when I am in system preferences so far. Usually when I run into a dead end like this there is some mystery key command that works... anyone know?I also noticed that some of the top line (f) keys are not doing what they are supposed to any longer as well... volume up opens the window for expose & spaces it looks like and does not control the volume monitor brightness controls are not working either... I went to the key and mouse preferences and set the key strokes to default and still the same.
View 6 Replies View Related I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this- it is a pita to adjust separate volume controls on everything. If I adjust the volume on the keyboard, the volume slider in itunes doe snot move. If I set the volume on itunes with a mouse, then come home and use the volume controls on my keyboard, I have to also manually adjust the slider in itunes. Anyway to link the two?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to increase the volume of my bootcamp disk, which I had done in the past using a method which ultimately made the disk unrecognizable. This time around I used Winclone to create an image of my bootcamp disk. I was not sure exactly how Winclone worked and to be safe I decided to keep the Bootcamp disk I had, and I created a third partition of a larger volume to which I restored the bootcamp image. Everything worked fine obviously, and the image was restored correctly to the new larger volume. The dilemma is I had two bootcamp disks, so I erased the smaller volume because I no longer needed it. Currently I am trying to restore this empty space within the main disk to the Macintosh HD. Disk util looks like:
I know I can just create a backup of the macintosh HD, another image of the bootcamp disk, and format the disk and start over, but I am hoping there is an easier way to go about this; considering there has been a method engineered such that I can just drag that corner of the mac HD and voila I have instantly more storage after applying, it seems viable that there is something that can be done rather than formatting my disk, unless the necessity for that of course was overlooked.

When using the iTunes application to listen to music, watch videos/podcasts, I find that the volume is far too low despite already maxing out the volume adjustments in iTunes. In fact, I can't imagine anyone turning down the volume adjustments to say the middle, as they would not be able to hear much.
Therefore, to compensate, what I always have to do is turn up the speaker volume on my iMac from 4 notch to 8 notch (there are 16 notches in total). The problem now is that the system volume is too loud (since it should be on 4 notches). So I would be listening to the podcast at an acceptable volume and suddenly get loud system sounds blaring out.
All other applications like VLC have reasonable volume. Only iTunes has this problem. Does any one else have this problem? Surely, it can't be just me.

Last time I flew, a bunch of my dialogue-heavy videos were too hard to hear over the white noise of the airplane, to my frustration.So I want to amplify the volume on a bunch of videos, some in avi format, others already compressed mp4's.I tried changing the volume using QT Pro and re-saving, and running them through Handbrake with the DRC cranked. Neither worked.This isn't brain surgery, but it's beyond my powers of the google. Bonus points if it can be automated & queued, as I have about 5 TV seasons I'd like to do.

Vista and 7 have built in functionality to allow the user to control the application volumes independently of each other. For example, if I'm watching a video, and also am browsing websites that randomly emit noise, it allows you to mute your web browser while still having sound from your video. Can this be done in Mac OS X? Or are there free programs?
I work online through a website that has annoying and non-essential sound, so I want to mute this in order to listen to music through iTunes.
In iTunes 9 i was able to disable the volume control for remote speakers in Airtunes. In iTunes 10 this option has disappeared in Airplay. Is it somewhere else in the menu or have they just threw this option out of iTunes 10. Is there some sort of workaround?

It was:
Firefox wants to use the font "Lucida Sans Unicode" on the volume "NO NAME".
This font is not installed. Allow Firefox to use this font?
Note: Volume "NO NAME" is my Boot Camp XP partition.
Also, in the screenshot it says Firefox3 as I renamed the Firefox app that while testing version 3 while keeping version 2 on the drive.

Lately I've found that when I add artwork to a song (or even change the name of the song), the volume decreases quite noticeably. About halfway through the bar when it is adding the artwork, the volume will permanently go down about 25-30% for the song(s).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering how I can move the Applications folder of my boot volume to another drive? The 'other' drive is an ExpressCard SSD as I want to take advantage of its speed. I used to run SL from it but I keep having this stupid problem. So the next best thing is to run frequently used files from the SSD in hope that it works fine. Btw, unfortunately I cannot simply create a symlink to my boot volume as I cannot remove the Applications folder from it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got my Mac back from a repair at the Apple Store. I was very excited to have everything back. However, Time Machine cannot back up! The error given is that the backup volume "cannot be found."
I've tried rebooting, remounting the drive and doing checks on it. Everything checks out. I can even write and read to and from the backup volume just fine via Finder. The only issue is that Time Machine can't. What's the problem? How do I fix it?

In Garageband, when I record acoustic guitar, the first 5 seconds are recorded at a good volume, but then Garageband automatically reduces the recording volume, making for a very inconsistent beginning.
I am using the default acoustic guitar track, with automatic level control turned OFF. This is on the newest MBP, with what i believe is the latest Garageband.
