View 3 RepliesCan someone help me figure out why every time I launch iPhoto, the Leopard firewall prompts me to choose whether or not I want to allow or deny access for this application to accept incoming network connections...regardless of the fact that every single time, I choose 'Allow'? Here's a screenshot of the exact prompt that appears:
I've checked the Leopard firewall configuration in the 'Security' preference pane (which is obviously configured to "Set Access for Specific Services and Applications", and sure enough, iPhoto appears in the list with the 'Allow Incoming Connections' setting chosen....but it still asks me every time if I want to allow or deny connections, and I can't figure out how to make it stop asking??
Just upgraded to iTunes 9.0 and I'm running a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Every time I open up iTunes that stupid Firewall box asks if I want to allow/deny incoming connections.
Even if I allow, and verify it's in the list as allow, it asks everytime.
I've removed it from Firewall settings, no luck.
I've reinstalled iTunes, no luck.
I have at 2010mbp + 2tb wd world edition.
I cant drag music, or play directly from my nas with finder ( tried add library, no can do either) I get an error that I dont have permission to copy to my OSX disc.
I'm logged in as administrator.
It works great on my gf's 2010 mb.
So I tried different versions of itunes. including 9.1 and the current 10.
It works fine in boxee and vlc, so im kind of confussed.
Since upgrading to iTunes 9.1 I'm being asked every time I open it if I want to allow incoming connections. Each time I respond yes, enter my admin name and password and everything is fine. The next time I open it it asks again. I've tried going to my Security preferences, deleting iTunes from the firewall rules and then adding it again, but this has no effect.

I have my firewall set to "allow specific services and applications."
I noticed today that DashboardClient, System Preferences, and a program called "ScreenSaverEngine." Are all set to allow..
Typically i'd just want itunes so I can use simplify media, and safari/firefox because i think it has to be enabled.
What are the parameters for allowing a program incoming access in general - i seem to get asked it now that I have this option checked and wanted to make sure? I find it odd that i have some system utilities on my list set to allow - is it just me?
I am on the way to install Transmission on a Unibody 15".
I see the firewall has 3 different settings:
Allow all incoming connections.
Allow only essential services.
Set access for specific services and applications.
Which setting would be most secure but still functional with Transmission?
I've upgraded to iTunes 10.1 and every time I open it I get the following message. I've tried accepting multiple times and still no luck. I've removed the rule from the firewall settings, rebooted and opened iTunes again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI live and work in Mainland China. There are a lot of sites I'd like to visit that I'm unable to do so because they're blocked. I'm a bit paranoid about internet security, especially here. I always connect behind a strict firewall on my wifi router (D-Link DIR-655) with SPI and NAT in addition I have the firewall on Snow Leopard set the strictest---to block all incoming connections. What I'm concerned about, is the VPN software of Witopia bypassing that firewall in my router. Will this happen? Does anyone know about the fine details of Witopia's VPN software and what it's doing, how it's connecting, etc?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy itunes sharing isn't working so it says to open up a port. I was looking at the directions apple gives for that and it says:
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Sharing.
Click the Firewall tab.
Check the iTunes Music Sharing option.
When i got to the sharing button there is not firewall tab. my computer is fully updated..where is it?
I'm running Leopard (10.5.5) on an Intel g5 iMac. I noticed this afternoon when trying to drop an app into my 'Applications' folder that I had to enter my password in order to do. Checking the 'Get info' pane for the folder I noticed that the permission status for 'everyone' was set to 'read only'. I have no idea how this happened but it must have been fairly recently as I was happily dropping apps into the folder only a few days ago. There are also two other 'names' in the panel labeled as 'unknown', one of whom has read & write permission and one of whom is also 'read only'.
There are only two user accounts on my mac and we are both administrators, so I don't know why there are so many entries under the 'Sharing and Permissions' section. So anyway, I unlocked the panel with my password and tried to flip the permission for everyone from 'read only' to 'read & write'. I got the following error dialogue: "The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error has occurred. Error code - 8076." I tried to add a new 'administrators' group to the permissions panel with read and write access but received the same error.
So my father got a new Macbook and I was trying to transfer over some of my files. I turned on file sharing (on my own computer, MBP) and accidentally removed myself from the permissions list for the Applications folder. Stupid, I know.
Now I can't access anything: Any application, System Pref., Time Machine, etc.......
Applecare's solution is to reinstall Leopard, not sure where the hell the disk is now. But I know I still have it. Is this the only course of action? Would repairing my permissions solve it? (using the install disk to access it)
My wife's computer (PowerBook G4) won't load iPhoto. It gets to the "loading photos" screen, then promptly crashes. I have run permission repair but everything was perfect
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone could tell me how I can give Symantec permission to read these files? Some of them are old IM conversations, but others I have no idea what they are. I ran a virus scan, and it skipped over quite a few things. I'd rather just be safe and have everything checked.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhat's the best (Software)Firewall solution for OS X. At the moment I work with a mixed environment ( ipfw, Apple Application Firewall and Little Snitch ). It seems to be secure, but this is an absolute overhead. I noticed, that my internet performance slowed down. For the moment I'm not able to spend money on a hardware solution. I'm searching for a complete Firewall software that controls incoming as well as outgoing connections ( Apple seems not to be interested in distributing a complete and easy waterproof solution ). Unfortunately ipfw offers no application control. I'm not a security expert, thus I need an easy configurable firewall.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a problem with my new mbp, mac os x snow leopard. It can't ssh. I've got no firewall running, can do ssh localhost and can ssh *into* my mbp from another machine, but I can't ssh from the mbp to another computer. If I do: ssh -v 192.168.0.6, hich is my wifes debian comp, I get:
OpenSSH_5.2p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh_config
debug1: Connecting to 192.168.0.6 [192.168.0.6] port 22.
debug1: connect to address 192.168.0.6 port 22: Operation timed out
ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.6 port 22: Operation timed out
I've tried uncommenting "Host *" and "ForwardAgent yes" in /etc/ssh_config (I read you had to do that on some other forum), but it doesn't help. I can ssh into my wife's computer using any other os than mac os x. This is extremely annoying, since I can't comfortably fetch my old files to this new computer.
I have a new mid 2010 iMac 27" quad core 2.8
Is it necessary to enable the firewall, which is off by default.
I have a 21.5" iMac connected to my basement ADSL Modem/Gateway via 25ft long UTP cable. Other devices (PS3, HP Laptop using Win 7, etc, etc.) are connected to the same ADSL Modem/Gateway via wireless. If wondering, this ADSL Modem/Gateway has its own firewall enabled and its application selection (for port forwarding) customized as well.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI live in China, its great, but I hate the firewall. Ever since they blocked Youtube, I've been trying to get a good connection to a proxy server. I still have not found a good enough proxy to watch youtube. So I am looking for a paid VPN, but I don't know what would be the best to go for. Since my connection in China is bad enough I need a VPN that doesn't slow down my connection any more.

I haven't checked to see if ipfw is doing anything out of the box, but I imagine not.
Just curious how important is using a firewall?
I currently have two Macs where one is a wireless base station using an older mushroom shaped Airport extreme, using a WPA/WPA2 network. Both my Macs have just had a fresh install of 10.6.
Since the Mac has it's own firewall, and the Mac gives the VM it's connection, is a firewall actually needed on the VM itself?
