Is it just me or does Skype have the superior audio and video quality?
Whenever I do some audio or video chatting it seems subjectively better than iChat. (Both on a Mac tried close after one another.
My mother then got a web cam for her PC and all of her friends use skype, so she refuses to download AIM and wants me to download skype.
Anyway, just wanteed to make sure there wasn't anything I should be concerned about with skype - a co-worker of mine said he used skype and it was great.
Is there anyway to mute incoming audio when using iChat video?
I'd rather not mute the entire system as I would just like to mute incoming audio when I'm on webcam with my girlfriend. When I was on my PC and used AIM for webcam, there was that option.
I am attempting to access my iChat preferences to add a GTalk account. When I go to iChat->Preferences and click, I am taken immediately to the Audio/Video preferences, where I see the video of myself, bluetooth setup, etc.
I can not figure out how to get back from here to my normal iChat preferences, or how to open my iChat preferences normally.
Can a person who has ICHAT use the video chat to chat with a person who has SKYPE

View 1 Replies View RelatedHow is the quality of the mic and video cam? When I chat with friend who uses a MacBook, her internal mic is quite bad. I usually have her use an external mic. But since a mic jack isn't included in the MacBook the quality of the internal mic becomes more important. How is it? Also, is the cpu powerful enough to push skype high quality video. (I know about ichat but I need skype).
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo just in the past couple days the quality of my outgoing ichat/skype video isn't good according to my friend. but the quality of her incoming video is normal/great. i got a new router yesterday, cause our old one was dying and i kept getting kicked off, but the problem still exists. 2 days ago everything was fine.
i've fiddled with the bandwidth preference in ichat and the streaming thing in system preferences-> quicktime.
I just tried using iChat for the first time in SL (I usually use Skype) and experienced something *very* odd.
First, the specs:
Late-2007 MBP
2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo
4 GB RAM
GeForce 8600M GT
The problem:
For the first few seconds of a chat, the video quality was gorgeous. But then my hard drive(?) (could've been the fans, I dunno) would start getting really loud (it sounded like a particularly intense Time Machine backup) and the video got extremely "blocky" until it was basically useless; after a few minutes the audio started to go, too.
We tried this a couple times with the same results. I rebooted my computer & AirPort, but no change.
My chat partner experienced no problems with audio or video (he's also on SL).
According to SpeedTest.net, my connection speeds are 12.31 Mb/s down/1.13 Mb/s up.
Skype and Google Talk video continue to work just fine.
Are iChat and Skype compatible? Some of my family uses Skype, and I have yet to set up my iChat. If I use iChat with AIM, a way to connect with someone using skype?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an early 09 mini, and have a problem with skype. I have a new logitec c500 webcamera that works with my pc. The skype account works with my first gen black macbook, but on the newer mini I can see myself but the audio does not work. The cam connects to one of the usb ports and I've configured sounds to "unrecognized usb sound device" that came up after I plugged the camera in the mini, but on the "test calls" I still can't hear myself. The skype for mac is a beta, but others seem to do ok.

Beyond the annoyances of only having 300 MB/month of internet, I am especially frustrated because I can't use skype, ichat, or google talk to stay in touch with people back home. I've tried everything; With skype, i downloaded authoxy, which corrects for the fact that skype takes its proxy settings from the network settings (I'm not a computer expert so I may have that wrong, but regardless, I followed the directions and tinkered with it some more and it failed). Then I downloaded the beta version of the latest skype, per customer support directions, and still no luck--i can't even sign on.
The same goes for iChat. Even google talk, which operates within the browser, will only allow text chat. When I try voice or video, it fails. None of this happens to students with a pc.
Done some research on Yahoo Messenger for Mac and Skype for Mac and both say that can do video / audio chat with their Windows counterparts. However, it appears there are still problems. Any users out there can give me some feedback on their audio / video performance.

In the past in different programs I have made the movie into an .avi and then imported that file into a DVD program is this the best thing to do? The quality settings on iMovie and iDVD are a little confusing. Also, is there a way that you can fit the finished DVD to disk, im sure I have seen this in the past, this would in some cases achieve the best it can do depending on the disc size. On my finished product, the menus (made in iDVD) are a little jumpy, would burning the disc at a lower speed make it easier for DVD players to handle the DVD. Also, while we are on the menu.... I set music to it, but it would loop acording do the looping on the menus, is there a way to make the audio play through even though the menu/images are looping? I have also mixed video and images in the movie, the photos don't really look great, I made a Ken Burns type slide show which is separate to the movie and that looks not bad, but the actual images that are within the movie pan quite badly and aren't as sharp as I would have hoped. Is there something I need to do differently on this? Just thought also, when importing on iMovie 09 is the quality not so good, I have heard that the best is iMovie 06. Is there any truth in this?

I looked everywhere and can't find some free software that does that. There are tons that have trial periods with lots of limitations (like it won't convert anything larger than a 5k size file) so I don't want those because I won't know if the thing works well unless I pay for it. I'm not opposed to paying for a converter IF I know it works awesome on a Mac.
View 3 Replies View RelatedToday I used for the first time the webchat feature in Skype. My laptop is a MacBook Pro i5 with Skype 2.8.0.851, MacOS is 10.6.5. My parents are using a decent Asus laptop running Windows 7 and the latest version of Skype for Windows. My connection is an 8MB via WiFi (n router). Theirs is a bit slower as it's via a dongle. They said that they could see me very well, no issues whatsoever. On my Mac the webchat was of very poor quality, pixelated, constantly freezing, massive delay. It was barely usable. Is anybody aware of any known issues between Skype on a MBP and on a Windows 7?
Pity I can't do this test, but I would like to see how their end of the chat was, I would like to understand if it was really good or just my parents' inexperienced opinion (they just bough a laptop for the first time). Once thing is for sure though, their chat wasn't constantly freezing and they could see my well 'like a tv'. I couldn't. On a slightly different note, just found out that my 'mighty' $1,499 MBP has a VGA webcam. The cheapest laptop you can buy in the UK for $299 has a 1.3MP webcam. Gutted. This clearly means that the quality of my webchat will never be particularly good and that having a grainy picture is considered 'normal' if you factor in the very limited resolution of a VGA camera (Unless you watch a teeny tiny window like a stamp) independently of the connection speed.
when using iChat or Skype, only one speaker (R) works. I was told that it was designed this way to save battery power and bandwidth and that it was originally designed this way when most users were on dial-up isn't this called designing for the lowest common denominator?

Ive also noticed i dont pick up on the little things, like the other persons typing either. So i have like 13 done and when i went to try the 14th to make sure video quality was there, there was no video quality. There was no audio and the picture looked like an itunes visualizer. I was wondering if this was a handbreak issue or because it was a newer DVD with some sort of protection on it. It was I AM LEGEND and the other movies i ripped were like John Wayne classics and movies from the 90s.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI've got a movie I'm exporting from FCE, just in the standard "Export to QuickTime Movie" option. The file looks fine (other than the fact that, when I watch it in QT, the aspect ratio is wrong). When I put it into iDVD and let it burn, the video just looks... weird. I'm not sure how to describe it, exactly, but it's just weird. I can't figure out what's wrong. Is it possible it's something in iDVDs conversion to MPEG-2?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI use a Sony HDR-SR11 AVCHD handycam. I import my clips into FCE4 via the log and transfer window, using the Apple Intermediate Codec. I edit my video, but i dont know where to go from here! What is the best way to export this video without loss of quality? These videos would mainly go onto youtube, iDVD, or a memory drive. I do not have quicktime pro, so any modifications would have to be within FCE4.
