Applications :: IChat Shuts Down / Kernel Protection Failure...
Oct 27, 2010
This occurs on my MBAir and my MBP 2.5 I would click on the video camera on the AIM Buddy List>Preferences>Messages>My Balloon Color>then a crash report Kernel Protection Failure>iChat shuts down...
Been on the phone off/on with AppleCare Techs, but no definitive answer or a fix that would resolve the issue...
Long story short, I accidentally deleted my iChat and reinstalled it from my leopard boot disk but now iChat wont work. Whenever I click on someones name in my buddy list or if i go into my preferences and click on the messages tab, iChat just freezes and crashes. I've tried deleting the com.apple.iChat.plist, reinstalling, repairing disk permissions, etc... I really don't know what else to do. Any ideas?
I keep getting these error messages when Safari keeps quitting. I have Safari 3.2.1 and OS X 10.5.6. I have performed resets, I empty my cache and clear my history often. It seems to be getting worse. The programs get the beach ball and then everything just quits running. 99% of the time I am getting the bad access, kern protection failure message. Is there something I cna do to fix it or prevent it?
I've been having problems with my programs crashing lately, and the message is always the same : Bad Access Kern Protection Failure. Often they crash as they're opening, and restarting them works, but sometimes they crash for no apparent reason while I'm using them. Affected programs are After Effects CS3, After Effects 7, Cinema 4D, Photoshop CS3, ITunes, even Safari and Mozilla Firefox. More or less all my programs.
I've run Disk Warrior, validated my fonts, removed programs that seemed to be problematic, trashed preferences, and the problem keeps occurring.
I've noticed other people on this site have posted the same problem but I can't see the responses.I'm on a Mac G5 with a Dual 2 Ghz Power PC Processor, 4 GB of RAM, Mac OS 10.4.11.
white 2007 macbook has been acting up a lot lately.
- it shuts down when the you close the lid (ie. doesn't sleep) - every 5 minutes or so it makes a sound as if it was loading a cd/dvd - now it takes about three attempts to actually turn the computer on (and takes ages to boot up) - freezes when you try to restart the computer - we just tried to attach an external harddrive, however it is now not being recognised (just in the past couple of minutes). Nothing is being recognised as being attached to the usb slots.
It is still in Applecare warranty so I will take it into hopefully tomorrow, but just wondering if there is anything I can do now to help it, or what the problem may be. I checked the hard drive in disk utility and the SMART status said 'verified'. The harddrive was replaced in the macbook about two years ago (the first one just died suddenly). Does this mean another HD failure is imminent? (I'm a bit concerned because now we can't back it up since it won't recognised any usb/external harddrive). It's running Leopard 10.5.8 (i hink).
so i got my 3 week old mbp 15 (which i dropped and dented) replaced today due to kernel panic/ram failure/apple store only had 1 memory stick in stock...
my question is, what causes ram failure? i dont want it to happen again, i didnt install any 3rd party ram.
I told myself not to do it. Don't update the Safari software to 4.0, you know how they always mess up these things. And yet, per accident I did. Of course Safari 4.0 doesn't work. Every time I open it, it shuts down. iChat also doesn't work anymore, and even the Dashboard shuts down every now and then. In addition, the computer feels incredibly slow. I can't download rapidshare links on iGetter anymore and everything just feels wrong. Countless threads have been opened on this matter with a variety of different problems for different people. Yet I have not read a proper solution. I have seen all kinds of technical solutions being offered but I'm not a computer wiz and I do not know the terms they use. I just want to go back to Safari 3.2 or at least the one before the 4.0 But I read that deleting Safari 4 and reinstalling 3.2 won't work because of a certain webkit that got installed with it, making it impossible to go back.
Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.
So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.
What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives. It won't boot from Apple Startup DVD either. Same thing happens, gray logo then kernel panic with jagged lines all across the shifted screen.

Sleep seems to have stopped working all of a sudden on my recently upgraded iMac. The only thing I remember doing was repairing disk permissions and changing a few iChat preferences.
I have password protection enabled on my operating system so that I can lock the computer, and also so that a password has to be entered after the computer has been sleeping or has been closed. However, when starting the computer from being powered off, no password is required.
My question is: if the computer is in sleep mode or is closed, if someone powers it off and the turns it back on, will they be able to bypass the password protection?
I know I can set the computer to ask for a password before logging in after startup, but it seems that if the computer is in a password protected sleep, that the sleep image would make the computer remember that it was password protected, and would prompt for a password before logging into my account.
Put simply, I am looking for a CloneCD equivalent to the mac.
More specifically, I am looking for a program that will copy and/or create disk images (either iso or dmg) of CD-roms or DVD-roms with copy protection on them. Obviously, trying to do this with disk utility or the wonderful open-source disc burning utility "Mac OS X Burn", which does almost everything else, will fail.
I have a couple of games (some of them are on CD-rom, others are on DVD-rom, and I am sure they have copy protection.) and I want to copy them onto my HDD as some form of a disc image file so I can just mount them when playing the game.
P.S. Please don't bring up legal issues. I bough these games and I am just copying them onto my HDD to play myself while saving some battery power on my laptop. It's not illegal, and more importantly, even if it was, it doensn't matter because I don't find it morally incorrect.
Macbook Pro won't boot. Symptoms preceding failure included failure to open Firefox. When trying to cold boot I can get as far as the start-up sound, the Apple logo, and the spinning whieel (spins for a bit but not for very long) and then major failure. Not running Liom.
Info: imac 10.1, Mac OS X (10.6.2), also have macbook pro running os 10.5
I have a few video files that I would like to distribute to a few people, but I would like to try and prevent casual copying. Is it possible to burn a home made DVD with DVD CCS copy protection on it without using something like Final Cut Studio?
I don't see a way to do it with iDVD or Toast 8.x. Any other suggestions? Does Toast 10 have this ability?
I got my first Mac yesterday after years of crappy Window PCs....the lower end 15 Mac Pro. I had to get Office to make it compatible with PCs otherwise I would have got iWork. I also use Firefox as my web browser. and i know i dont need antivirus but i would like some type of protection. so my question is: what free programs would protect you against privacy and personal issues such as data or spyware? And against Microsoft Office viruses that it brings in? And I know people don't like Java and you should block it?
My iChat refuses to open. Every time I click on it to open it it will not open at all and a window will come up saying "The application iChat quit unexpectedly". How can i get my iChat to open and is someone or something hacking into my computer?
I am using ichat with my AIM account and it has worked fine. But yesterday it stopped logging me in. When I select available for my status I get a message saying "An unidentified AIM socket error has occurred". How do I fix this problem? I tried logging in using AIM on Windows Vista and it works fine so there is nothing wrong with my account. Also, I have deleted my aim account from ichat and re-addng it and I still get the same error.
I have just downloaded Dreamweaver MX onto my mac and when I try to launch the software I get this message: The application "Dreamweaver" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "7<Dreamweaver MX><Dreamweaver MX><MSL_All_Carbon.Shlb><>". I'm using Panther at the moment.
I've been googling this for a bit, and I'm only seeing a single tutorial being copy pasted around from back on OSX 10.4. Since iChat has been updated several times since then, I'm not sure how viable the tutorial is.
I need to reinstall ichat after I uninstalled it from my 10.5.5 macbook (black) with OS X (panther). I do not have my cd's, lost them somewhere and I can't find any instructions online on how to reinstall my ichat without the CD.
I am in the process of setting up iChat on my spousal unit's iMac. I've already created a Jabber account, using her gmail address. That seems to work fine. Now I'd like to add an AIM account. When I click on "Get an iChat Account..." in the Account Setup window,It was my understanding that this signup gets you an AIM account, but it from the first line on the page, it seems to assume that you're using .Mac (even more oddly, since .Mac doesn't actually exist any longer). What am I missing here? Aren't AIM, MobileMe and .Mac accounts the same for purposes of iChat?
I have a MacBook with built in webcam, external webcam, and iChat. Next to everyone who has a Mac on iChat is the green box, but there is a phone icon rather than a video icon.
Video chats used to work, but suddenly they stopped. Clicking the green icon next to my name on top opens a box that days "My Build-in iSight" and I can see myself in that webcam, but can not make video chats. How can I fix this?
I made a aim account last year. I had no problem with it until yesterday when i couldn't log in. I thought it was nothing so I waited awhile but still nothing. it says "could not connect to Aim" and under it said "none." I really want to talk to my friends but I can't.
