Applications :: What Is The Difference Between The MS Mac Office Packages
Aug 2, 2010
- Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011: Includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Messenger and is priced at $119 for a single install or $149 for a Family Pack allowing up to three installs in a single household.
- Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Business 2011: Includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Messenger and is priced at $199 for a single install or $279 for a Multi-Pack that allows a user to install Office on two of their Macs.
- Microsoft Office for Mac Academic 2011: Includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Messenger and is available for higher education students, staff, and faculty, with a single install priced at $99. This academic version may only be purchased from authorized academic stores or direct from Microsoft.
That's the description given on this website. Home and Business looks like it include Outlook, but the Student and Academic editions look exactly the same.

I've used Microsoft Streets & Trips to plan hiking trips and travel across the world.I recenty made the switch to Apple and, of course, do not regret one aspect.Except, that is, that I cannot seem to find any software packages or applications that mirror Microsoft's Streets & Trips.Does anyone know of a program that may be similar and worth a try. It's difficult to explain all of the capabilities of S&T so here is a link to the software for comparison.

Ready to install Office 2011 for Mac. Currently we are running Office 2008 for Mac.
What is the best way to eliminate Office 2008 and to ensure a clean Office 2011 install?
For most Mac programs, I would normally drag the application folder to the trash, and then do a library search for some entries related to the program. Will this work for Office 2008 to Office 2011? I ask because the M$ installers seem to more than simply add the app to your app folder and update the libraries - and don't get me started on the horrors of the Windoze registry errors.

So here is my dilemma. I got a letter a few days ago from the college I am going to, and it included a list of requirements if we were bringing our own computer. One of the requirements was if we had a Mac, to have Office 2008. I have talked to a friend who is replacing her current Macbook with another Macbook later in the summer, and we decided that when she bought her Macbook, that we could split the price of Microsoft Office for Mac 2008. Now, should I just go ahead and continue on with the plan with my friend, or what? Is there a huge difference in Office 2004 and Office 2008?

Whilst still waiting for the MBP refresh, I would like some advice on which office software you would recommend.
I have decided to convert from being a pc user to have a go with a mac as i have heard so much positive info about its OSX operating system.
I have many word files etc (obviosuly coming from a pc).
What would you recommend,
iwork (55 pre installed)
office for mac (?)
open office (free)
Which one if all of these will enable me to just plug in my usb stick and download all my word/ excel files and pictures without any issues and edit/ change/send again without any issues.

Where does OS X Software Update keep the .pkg files that I've downloaded previously?
It would be a real timesaver if I could simply drag a downloaded .pkg file to another computer rather than waiting on it to download again!

I am working on some Macs and am going to be installing Microsoft Office 2008 on them, including 12.2.0 and 12.2.5 updates and Entourage Web Services Edition. I would like to somehow automate the install by combining the packages into one or something like that.

I've heard Office:Mac isn't that great, and doesn't make up for what iWork 09 is missing. So I'm wondering what people think about it and why does it get such a bland reputation? Also, do people use a combination of the above? Such as iWork and Office:Windows? Both Offices? I do mainly word processing, some soft Excel work (no hardcore giant spreadsheets...yet), and general PowerPoints for presentations. I have access to cheap iWork/Offices (school discount) and a family pack of the top-level edition of Office:PC (family) so it isn't a big deal to get any of the above.
Lastly, what's the difference between Camino and Firefox? I use Firefox currently and love it, mainly due to the add-ons (weather at the bottom, Gmail alert, skins, page views, other customizations). Tabs seem to be on all browsers these days, so are there any other key differences?

I'm sure most people suffer from this but here goes.
So I make a presentation on Mac Office powerpoint, everything is fine. I open it up at university on the PC, all is fine. I maybe change some text on a slide and save it again. Open the same file again on my Mac, and it won't open some silly error comes up saying trouble accessing file from mac HD.
Then luckily I have keynote, so I just open it in that and use that.
Point is why does this happen?? Whilst keynote is better, sometimes I have to edit things on a PC at work or uni and then it becomes a giant mess on my mac.
Is there a quick fix, or will I have to throw Mac Office into my growing pile of Microsoft related garbage.

For many of the applications I have (including Apple applications such as Aperture, iWork, etc), I have PDFs of the User Manuals that I've downloaded from Apple or other support websites. Would there be any harm in me dropping my user manual PDFs into the package at the top level (outside the >Contents folder)? I absolutely know to be cautious about messing with items within the >Contents folder, but wondering whether there is any harm in dropping in user guides or other related reference information into the package, outside the Contents or other key program folders within the folder.
Ultimately, I'm just looking for a way to keep my documentation organized and with whatever program it corresponds to. I've found that too many times, I download program manuals and tip sheets, and then I can't find where I put them on my hard drive. Also trying to avoid having duplicates of folders (i.e., a "Photoshop" folder in my /Applications and a "Photoshop" folder in my /Documents).

I am currently installing OSX 10.7.3 on an external passport HD for my wife whose Macbook hard drive has died. I now have all the system up to date but have encountered an odd problem. All the .mpkg installers are opening in Terminal not the Installer utility, which I can't find. My choices are in Open with: Terminal, App Store and Other.

I was reading on a previous post that it was suggested a person with who was getting a "startup disk full" message like I am should use the disc utility to repair permissions. When I tried that I got this message: Error: No valid packages (-9997). What does that mean?
Also, I have an external drive and I use that to store pics and music and basically all my files. What more can I do to help with the full disc thing?
I have a Power Mac G4 AGP graphics 1.38 GB memory. Right now I have 204 GB available.

A few apps dont work since my 10.3.9 upgrade so I ran Disk Utiltiy to repair permissions and I get a No Valid Packages error. According to apple I should never move a file called BaseSystem.pkg (located in /Library/Receipts), which I didnt, but I think the 10.3.9 upgrade did... I checked out the path and the file is not there....
Anyway the 2 fixes are to 1) reinstall panther, which I cant do cuz of freelance deadlines or 2) to copy this file from another machine and put it in /library/Reciepts.

I have a user with a new 13" MacBook Pro, which got rather misconfiguration during intial setup. We thought it might be easiest to erase and start afresh, so I booted into the Lion recovery partition. Firstly, tried to customise the Lion installation as per previous versions, but the 'Customise' choice is greyed out. Ok, no Erase and Reinstall option then. In Disk Utility, I erased the partition, and renamed it something sensible (UserHD).  Back to the install, all proceeded correctly until it tried downloading files from Apple. At this point, the progress bar moved slowly across, until it reached the end and I was presented with an error message along the lines that it failed to download additional components from Apple. Â
I have tried this four times, with various combinations of Wifi, and wired ethernet connections, all with the same result.Booting into Internet Recovery mode (Cmd-Opt-R) also fails:Â after an initial moving glode icon, and a small amount of the progress bar, I get the exlcamation mark icon, apple.com/support and error code -2105FÂ The laptop is now unuseable, because we can't restore it. Â
1: Can I tell it NOT to go to the internet first? Every other OS Installer lets you install first, and then go off to download additional components.
2: I note in the Installer logs that it thinks it's about 8 hours behind local time. Is this a problem (perhaps with SSL cert verification?)
3: Does the download happen over non-standard ports? (eg. something that may be being blocked by our firewall?)Â

My macbook greeted me with the gray screen and folder with question mark this morning - I've tried everything listed on the Apple website for this issue, I've tried running the Disk Utility (although I'm getting an "error no valid packages" message) and I've tried running DiskWarrior. Disk Utility sees the harddrive - DiskWarrior does not.
The hard drive only "clicks" 3 times at bootup, but it stops immediately after. Can I conclude that the hard drive is not entirely defective that it's just a bad header, or boot sequence or whatever "fixable, I won't lose all my data" error? My other question is that if I can see the hard drive in Disk Utility, is it possible to create an image of it that I could say extract the data from on another Mac?

I'm looking to modify the cal command that I've seen used for calendars in GeekTool to create a horizontal calendar.
I don't care about days of the week so much, I just think it would be interesting to have all of the days of the week listed out in order at the bottom of my screen, with the current one marked.
So, I need two things:
I need to strip out of the cal command the days of the week at the top (or repeat them the appropriate number of times, but I imagine that will be far more difficult) and the line breaks at the end of each week. This is the most important part.
Secondly, I'd like to find a way to add bars (like this: |) on either side of the current date without replacing the numbers as most of the calendars I've seen have done it.
Here's the code I've seen:
Code:
cal | sed "s/^/ /;s/$/ /;s/ $(date +%e) / $(date +%e | sed 's/././g') /"
If I can just modify that to get what I want, that's fine, if I have to use something completely different, that's fine. I just would love to have a horizontal calendar.

Is buying logic advisable if I use garageband? The thing I cannot wait to try is MainStage, it looks fantastic. Is there seriously that much of a difference between logic and garageband? Right now however, I'm just messing around with garageband and such. Is there seriously that much of a difference between logic and garageband? Though in the next few months, I plan on utilizing my mac more professional reasons. The reasons I bought it for, recording. (So far, its just an expensive type writer).

I was just curious what the main differences were between the applications Deeper and Onyx? Onyx seems to be the same thing, with a few more features. Is there something that Deeper can do, that Onyx can't?
Also one more random question.. does Transparent Dock work on OS X 10.4.9, and does it allow you to change the color like Cleardock?

Has anyone been able to notice a discernible improvement with Lossless? If so, what type of music/speakers were you using?

What is the difference between the MSN messenger client that comes with Microsoft Office 2008 and the one that is downloaded from the website.I use the one that comes with Office. The other day I went to my mates house and noticed his looked very different, the one download off the MS website I presume. Is the difference just a theme or am I out of date? Because I still seem to be getting updates for my client, but his looks newer for some reason. So am I not sure. What is the difference?

I'm trying to figure out the genesis of my problem. Two days ago, I was able to send and receive mail using the Mail app with no problem. Then suddenly last night, I can only send mail using the app. I called Comcast to see if they had a mail server down and they told me it was a problem with my e mail client since I could send and receiving using the Comcast webmail. I don't get it. I didn't change any of my settings and I can send and receive just fine using my iPhone.
