Applications :: Screenshots Captured As Black Colored Square
Mar 29, 2009
I used to use Command-shift-4 or Preview/Grab/Selection to capture screenshots, which worked great - capturing as png and saving to the desktop. However, now I just get a black coloured square captured with both methods. Capturing a window is fine, this just happens when it is a selection.

A bizarre thing: when I wake my Cube from sleep, the mouse pointer seems to have converted itself into a black 1" square. As soon as I click in a program it changes back to an arrow.

Every time I take a screenshot (regardless of method: via preview, screenshot, selection or screen mode shortcuts), it always comes out all black! Luckily I have Snapz Pro X for video capture so I can show you what I mean, but it's much more of a pain to use on a regular basis. This has been going on for about a week and a half now.

I'm trying to figure out the best settings to capture video from a Cannon XL directly in Quicktime Pro. Will I need to capture as a DV stream or can I use H.264 right of the bat?

3 days ago I opened FCE to work on some video, and every single captured clip in any project I open simply appears as a gray screen with no audio or image. All clip info like names, in/out markers, etc is still there. I have not had any problems in the past couple years with the program, and have not made any changes to it or my computer recently.

I've but a bit of thought (and research) into this with no avail.
Basically, I'm trying to detect when a screenshot is taken.
The people over at CloudApp say they do it by monitoring the users screenshot path (com.apple.screenshotpath or whatever) and looking for new files that start with "Screen shot". However, this isn't reliable.
The people over at grab.by wouldn't reveal their secret method, but, a search of their help database reveals "Additionally TinyGrab for Mac will not auto-upload images if 'Spotlight' indexing in OS X is disabled."
P.S. I'm a total noob at this. Try to take some time dumbing things down

I just updated itunes and found that the file I used to change the sidebar icons from gray to colored was no longer there. Can I download the same file for itunes 10.0.1 or will a new one have to be created? I got the file from [URL].

I use colored labels for certain document folders/files. Have tried to use colored labels with some apps with limited success.Specifically I tried to color label "image capture", but to no avail. Is there a way of getting around this Apple limitation?

What the problem could be? When I screen grab a full screen window by typing Code: Command > Shift > 4 > Space, the resulting screenshot has the right hand edge cut off. Seems to happen in all apps.

To see how it looks: [url] I can not find the cause of its pixels that appear on the screen. Only in the viewer. They occur randomly when I add an effect FCPX. (not just a plug-tier) These pixels are found embedded in the video if I made one!It does not appear immediately launching FCP but after 5 minutes after playing withthe settings of my corrections. When they appear in FCP if I run photoshop, I have the same pixels in the window of my image in Photoshop I did not think I shall give my card GT120 But I have an ATI 5770 with an Apple MacPro 4.1 What I tried: reinstall FCP New partition with 10.6.8 and 10.7 fired FCP preferences Reset PRAM + SMC Changed the cables and adapters of my screens Does this card is defective? Why do they not appear in the screen

Been on a Mac in one form or another but never saw this. It's not even mentioned on the apple.com site under startup problems. Started up on my eMac and got this blinking blue dot that looked a bit like earth in a gray square. Whole think was about an 1" square in the middle of the screen. The startup tone was normal.

My two previous older macs have been perfect to me, but this new MBP I5 model is giving so many issues lately. Every once in a while, my computer's graphics (I am assuming) goes crazy, and I get this pixelated distortion that's right in the middle of my screen that's about 2"x5" on my 17" screen. This happened just earlier, while I was using Safari. However, even after closing all of the Safari windows down, the distortion will still be there, and will stay there regardless of what I have or don't have open. Logging in and out will fixes the problem, and everything goes back to normal for the mean time. Any one ever experience similar problems or know what I could do to see what's going or fix it?

I'm around 2-3 days away from my MacBook Pro arriving, and I was just wondering what is the best way to take screenshots on a Mac? I need something that can be made to take a screenshot of a particular window (automatically scale to the size of the window).

I've noticed that using Apple's Grab, or any other screen capture application I've tried, I always end up with slightly blurred text.
It doesn't matter if the capture is saved as TIFF or PNG or other lossless format, or as 100% JPG. Here's an example from Grab. The text doesn't look the same as it does on the screen originally - I've put an example there using Photoshop to show how the text actually looks to me on screen. You can see that the text in the screenshot is blurred.
Is there any way to get around this? Any screen capture software that can get me sharp text?

I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.6.2 on my mid-2007 white macbook. I recently reinstalled Snow Leopard, so I'm not positive if screen shots have been working before on this current installation. My problem is that whenever I attempt to take a screen shot, using cmd-shift-cntrl-[3 or 4], the snapshot noise is made, but no image file appears anywhere on my desktop. I have tried searching the computer for files containing "screen shot" in the name, and none come up, so apparently the file is not being saved anywhere on the computer. Neither restarting Finder, nor restarting the computer solved the problem, so I'm stuck.

I've been trying to figure this one out for quite some time now. I'm using the command+control+shift+4 option to take a quick screen shot like I always have, but they haven't been posting to my desktop. I've searched all of my files for .png as the should be saving, but they aren't showing up. A tool I used that was recommended to me was to download OnyX and I could control where the files were not only being sent to, but also what type of file they were (.png, .jpeg, etc...)Regardless of where I would choose for them to go they are still showing up.

OS 10.5 - Cannot find Finder. I was helping a friend today. I installed Leopard for her successfully last week on a Powermac G4. I installed a LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB backup drive and today I partitioned into 3 volumes. Backed everything up with Carbon Copy Cloner. and everything worked well. At the end, I ran Software Update which installed updates for Quicktime and iTunes. That's when the problems started. First, Spotlight started indexing all the backup volumes. I tried to stop that but couldn't. Then Finder was not responding, I tried to relaunch but it did not help. All I get is the coloured beachball. The dock is there, the applications work, but no Finder.
I booted from CDs, ran Verify Disk and all was fine. Tried to run Verify Permissions, and that was taking a long time (This seems to be a Leopard problem in general). I read online that this operation below in Terminal works, but I am not sure exactly how to type it as I have not used Terminal before. I also don't know if this is the right solution. Do I type exactly as it is below or without the quotation marks. I typed it without the quotation marks.

I have some strange colored dots on my screen that will not go away.
The weird part is that they are not stuck in place but seem to be shadows that are not coming through the right color.
I am new to macs so if someone could tell me how do take a screen shot I will put it up so you can see.

I was messing around with my desktop drive icons and noticed you can't give your 'Macintosh HD' partition a colored label, when I right clicked my bootcamp partition, the colored label options were available, so I gave it a color. But when I remove it, whenever the partition get's unmounted (at shutdown or manually trough disk utility), OS X throws a kernel panic. So now I have a permanent label attached to my bootcamp drive.
