Applications :: Photo Consolidation - Sorting And Removing Dupes

Dec 28, 2009

My wife and I recently purchased our third Mac system (iMac). She is an aspiring photographer. We have our oldest family pictures (most in iphoto) being moved to the IMac from our Mac Mini and also her DSLR photos from our Macbook to the IMac as well. (she uses lightroom/photoshop). The problem we are running into is we have probably about 100GB in photos and I know there are many duplicates. The problem is the pictures are mixed formats (jpeg and raw) and some are the originals and some are edited. I'd like to get some sort of program(s) that could remove duplicates (if there is a dup in JPG and RAW, I'd like to keep the raw) and maybe group (its asking alot, I know) up the edited photos.

OS X :: Sorting Safari Bookmarks - Removing Duplicates

Nov 3, 2006

I tend to skim an article or web site and if I see something of interest I bookmark it for later review. The forgetful part comes in when I find myself bookmarking the same site several times. One thing I have to admit about the old IE that I used to use was it would warn you if there was a duplicate addy already in your favorites folder.

I'm stuck with tens of thousands of duplicate bookmarks (maybe even millions). Safari doesn't seem to offer any sorting solutions to weed out the duplicates or even organize them (by name would be cool) other than manually doing it. The prospect of manually picking out dups from the billions of links I have collected over the past few minutes alone is daunting. Any suggestions before I start sorting the trillions of links one at a time?

Applications :: ITunes Dupes And Adds 1 To MP3 Filenames On Import

Jan 9, 2010

I use torrents to download most of my music. I download the torrents to my downloads folder. For example if the torrent is called Greatest Hits it ends up in a subfolder of downloads ... downloads Greatest Hits. To add the music to my library I open downloads in Finder and drag the Greatest Hits folder from the finder window to the itunes icon in the dock. My itunes preferences are set to copy music to my itunes library folder (which is totally separate from downloads, I think it's something like documentsitunesmusic). And I also have preferences set to keep the library organized.

This process often works perfectly. Everything is added nicely to itunes and I go ahead and drag the Greatest Hits folder from the downloads folder to the trash, and then empty the trash. But sometimes, itunes will dupe the mp3's I've just added in my library. It will, for example, add to my library a tracklist like this:

song
song 1
other song
other song 1
next song
next song 1

Where the songs with 1 at the end are dupes of their twin without the 1. I haven't figured out the rhyme or reason to what files itunes will dupe in this manner. I think it has something to do with having track numbers in the original filenames (rather than in the id3's?). But I haven't noticed a definitive pattern.

In what's become a yearly release, I have officially released the fifth edition of the Apple Enterprise Backup Solutions paper. If you are unfamiliar with the document, it is a free paper that will help you find the right backup solution for your environment, outlining various backup techniques, software solutions and data consolidation solutions. This document has been referenced in numerous webcasts and online publications. If you've read the previous releases, much of this will seem similar. The main update in this paper is a complete review of the PresSTORE 3 solution. You can find a link to the document and its mirror at: [URL]

Applications :: Sorting Out Columns In Excel

Dec 6, 2010

I want to sort out my finance spreadsheet where I have the category of the spending and the adjacent cell is the amount I spent.

[Category, Price]
[Gas , $50]
[Grocery , $80]
[Lunch , $15]
[Gas , $34.50]

What I'd like is for a function that can sort the categories into individual columns for the categories. So that this big list of purchases I have is sorted out into their own column that matches the category and then sums it too. Does this make sense? I was sort of avoiding any VBA for this but if thats how it has to be done then thats cool

Applications :: Entourage Mail Sorting Using Rules

Jan 8, 2010

I've set up Rules and they work if I go to Messages/Apply Rules and click each of the rules. However, it does not apply the rules if I click All Rules at the head of that list. Someone advised me to check the boxes of each Rule under Tools/Rules so they would be applied when mail arrives, but that doesn't work. All of those boxes are checked and the rules are not applied when mail arrives.

1. Any idea how to make rules apply as mail arrives?
2. If that's not possible, do you know how to make "all rules" work so I don't have to highlight and click through each of the several rules?

Applications :: ITunes Compilation (sorting By Year)?

Feb 23, 2010

For some reason iTunes messes up my complaitions if I sort the albums by anything else than "album", such as year. It "breaks" the compilations up (you know what I mean) even if the year is the same. The weird thing is that some (up to 3 I've seen) tracks keep in bundles (even despite having different artists). Also, if the album stays "intact" by some wonder when I sort by year, the track order usually becomes totally random... (14, 4, 2, 13, 3, etc).

Yes, they are marked as compilations. Yes, album artist is the same (blank field). No, there are no typos.

As a disclaimer, I'm on a Windows machine. Can anyone tell me how to set the "sort by year" a default? It's pain to re-set it every time I launch iTunes.

OS X :: Lots Of Dupes In The Folders Of Itunes Library

Jan 11, 2011

Recently my buddy's macbook pro died. When we realized it was on it's way out, we moved his itunes library to an external hard drive. We had to consolidate it a couple times to get everything. We setup his new macbook pro to look at the external drive for his itunes library.

However, the new macbook pro is still storing music files locally (the external drive is always plugged in). I did a consolidation last night and noticed something weird. It's not jsut looking for the files that arent in the itunes library on the external drive and adding them, it is making full copies of the itunes libraries on the external drive. So, that means that my buddy has about 4 of each song in his itunes library folders (only one copy of the song shows up in itunes itself). So his Dave Matthews folder will show the album Crash as it's own folder, but within that folder there will be four copies of each song that is on the album.

Applications :: Sorting Out ITunes Library - Manage Files?

Dec 28, 2010

Over the years, I have amassed GBs worth of music, spread over many different iTunes libraries, as a result of having desktops, laptops, replacement machines etc. When I first started my collection, I stupidly "let iTunes manage my library" which has resulted in all my tracks being put into thousands of different folders because iTunes likes to create a separate folder for each artist. I was wondering if there was any way of exporting all my music in the iTunes database to a new location, organized by album. eg. A State of Trance 2010 Yearmix being exported to a folder called that, not each of the 80 tracks going into a separate artist folder.

If this can be done, I'm hoping to consolidate my music collection into one library, once and for all! It's probably worth noting that I'm now on Windows, but I thought I would ask here as iTunes is an Apple product. I have access to a Mac should I need to do anything "Mac-specific" to make this happen. Tune up looks like a promising piece of software. However, it only seems to clean up the music files themselves, not their organization within my music folder. Does anyone have any experience with it? Sorted! I'm sure there are loads of people out there that would like me reorganize the file structure of their music after iTunes obliterates it...so here's what I did.

1) Downloaded Songbird. What a great application! It has addons!
2) Went into the applications options. (Tools >> Options)
3) Selected the 'Manage Files' tab.
4) Ticked the box to 'Allow Songbird to manage files'. In the 'Structure Folders' section underneath I changed it to 'Album/Song Files'.
5) Clicked OK at the bottom to save changes and Songbird then wizzed through my collection and put all my music into Album folders!
6) Uninstall iTunes.

Applications :: ITunes Sorting - Organizing / Creating Playlist

Feb 6, 2009

Alright, so I have two songs by The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and With a Little Help from My Friends. If you don't already know, these songs cut into each other, so if you play With a Little Help right after Sgt. Pepper, it will sound like one song (this was intended). What my problem is is that the way that the songs are sorted (by Artist), With a Little Help from My Friends is before Sgt. Pepper, where it should be vice-versa. Is there any way I can fix this problem, without having to change the way the songs are sorted (I like them organized that way) or creating a playlist? Maybe an Applescript or application?

Applications :: Sorting PDF Documents - Ability To Combine All The Records

At work I receive various medical records for clients. It would be helpful to take a stack of medical records from a specific doctor, scan them into PDF's, and then tag each page of the stack with the name of the provider and date of service. Then, as additional records come in from various providers, and I repeat the process, I would hope to have the ability to combine all the records if need be sort the entire set of records by date, or if I choose to have them sort by provider. I know it would require some manual tagging but overall I think would save a great deal of time. I cant find a single program that will enable me to do this. I'm looking to have the ability to quickly rearrange the pages of a pdf file based on tags or labels that I add.

MacBook Pro :: Removing Underside Of MBP 17 - Pop Sound When Removing On Cover Normal?

Jun 30, 2010

as an extension to my question regarding RAM utilization, I've decided to upgrade my RAM. I went through the process of removing the underside of my MBP. After taking the screws out and mentally marking which slot they came out of (some are of different size), I pulled the lid up at the black trim area (the "neck" of the display mount) as this was the easiest way to get a non-damaging grip on the metal underside -- read: I avoided using a screw driver on the lid. As I started to lift, I was surprised at the amount of force I needed to use in order to remove the lid; something near the center of the cover was still holding the lid to the underside of the body. In fact, the amount of force I needed to use made me pause to question if I missed an important step other than simply removing the screws. I decided to "go for it" and applied more pressure while pulling the lid up and away from the body and heard a "pop" noise.

Applications :: Finding And Removing Unused Applications?

Dec 26, 2010

I've just used my time machine to migrate my old macbook's contents to my brand new macbook air. While I was watching it restore 803,678 files to the new machine, I was wondering how many of them are unused applications. I've stupidly never set up separate user accounts before this, and I'm sure there are any number of applications that were placed on my old machine by my kids, my husband, and various visitors to our house. Since I'm using time machine instead of starting fresh, I know those have been transferred to the new machine. I've never worried too much about this situation before now, as about every three years I've bought a new machine, migrated the files I need to the new machine, wiped the old one clean, and handed it down to one or the other of my kids.

But now I'm realizing that with time machine, everything on my computer is now forever...everything anyone has ever put on it has been transferred to time machine and now to my new machine. I don't want to be operating with years-old versions of kid's games and apps on every machine I set up from now on for the rest of my life. Is there anything out there that specifically looks for stuff that hasn't been used for a specified number of years and asks something like, "Barney & Friends was installed 1/16/2003 and was last used 10/18/2005. Delete Barney & Friends and all associated files, yes or no?"
