I have moved my itunes library to a removable hard drive. Every time I try to trash my old itunes file and access the removable HD, I cant find it from iTunes. the only thing I can get it to do is to reload (duplicate) the entire 30gb library on the HD I want it off of. Now I have 2 duplicate versions of my library, but still can't get it to keep the files on the HD.

I've followed several tutorials on how to get this done, as it seems so simple but it's not working on my end. I've moved the iTunes folder from the /music/ to an external hard drive. I'm opening iTunes, going to Preferences, Advanced, and replacing the iTunes Media folder location to the correct one /Volumes/Volume E/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media
I'm checking Keep iTunes Media folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library, clicking on the "OK" button, and nothing happens.
Funny enough, Spotify finds it in seconds and I can play my music from that player instead.

I'm running out of space on my harddrive and am wondering. Is there a way to move some of my library to an external harddrive? Like TV shows and movies that I don't need to access all the time. I don't want to delete anything. I don't want to carry around a harddrive all the time.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have read the Apple site for how to set the iTunes library to point to another location, but am having trouble. What I did was copy my entire iTunes folder over to my network hard drive and all the files copied just fine. However, when I point iTunes to that location, the files still point to the old default iTunes. I checked this by using "get info" for the files in the library and it still points to the old location and not the new one.
Just wondering if anyone has any tips on what may be going on or why it is refusing to point to the new location?
I was able to do it on my pc. Is there anyway I can remove my music from my harddrive (Macbook) and place in my external hard drive. And everytime i open itunes it will grab the music from my external hard drive. Also my external hard drive is hooked up to my airport extreme.

now heres the twist that i need help with.
i recently bought a new imac and i had a 1TB external hard drive from before. all of my music and movies are already on the drive but i didnt have it with me when i first was using my imac so i setup a itunes library on my imac. so when i hit consolidate in itunes none of the music and movies that i had from before are showing up in my itunes.
I am about to order a 1 TB external hard drive to store my photos and iTunes library on.
It will have Firewire 800, so will my iTunes access files on the external drive as fast if they were the internal drive? ( and will iPhoto do the same? )
I have an iMac that is rapidly filling up. I would like to move my iTunes and iPhoto library to my external harddrive (I currently use for Time Machine). Is this possible or even adviseable? If I were to do this, what would I need to do. Is it as simple as moving the folders that hold these files on to the external. Would the programs find them.

I would like to back up my external removable hard drive using an online storage company like Mozy or Carbonite, but am not having much luck in finding one who will backup this type of drive. I have a 100gb iTunes folder on my MacBook which I wish to transfer to my new iMac. Rather than simply copy it across to the iMac's HD, I would rather copy it to an external HD and then run iTunes from the external HD connected to my iMac. So my question is simply what is the best way to do this.

I am running out of space on my laptop so I am moving all my music to an external hard drive. If I keep my file directory structure and naming the same, can I simply "re-point" iTunes to this new storage location and all my songs (etc...) will keep working in iTunes? View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a 160GB external hard drive, and decided to transfer my iTunes music to it. I followed the instructions in the Help section of the iTunes program. The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.

Then I went to "library" and then "consolidate", and it moved all my library over to my external. I can verify that my songs are all there on my externalHowever, now, itunes won't play any songs of mine. I double click on the song in itunes and it just wont play. I have another external harddrive that is portable and I'd like to have this one to travel with and be able to update it from the main library on the other ext. hd. I installed a 128MG SSD, which is too small for storing my iTunes library. My iTunes library is on a second hard drive (my Mac Pro has four internal hard drives). I went to iTunes Preferences. Under Advanced Preferences "iTunes Media folder location" I selected my second hard drive and found my iTunes folder. But iTunes continues to show only the (few) songs on my SSD, without the (many) songs or playlists from my second hard drive. View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter weeks of issues since migrating my entire iTunes library to a NAS (WD MyCloud) from a PC I think I'm going to move it to the harddrive of my new iMac.
My questions are:
1) iTunes keeps showing that there are around 150 songs it can't locate (displays the exclamation mark next to the songs) which I then have to find manually - do I need to find all songs first before moving the library?
2) The total size will eventually be around 550GB once all further CD's are ripped - will this considerably slow down my iMac which is 1TB? (so far I have only used 79GB of it)
3) One of the reasons I want to move the library is that the NAS somehow more than duplicated most of the files so now my itunes shows I have 264GB of music but the NAS is showing 540GB - iff I migrate the iTunes library, I'm assuming it will only move the 264GB that it links to and not all the duplicates - is this correct?

I want to get a mac but one thing that concerns me is my itunes. I have a massive library and if I get a mac I will need to copy the library to my external hard drive from my pc then copy it again to the mac. How could I do this without losing my playlists, rating etc? And also if you have all your photos in iPhoto can you access them without opening iPhoto? If you can how? Because I have played around on Macs in the Apple Store and couldn't see where they would be!

Initially, I had the files on my internal, but copied the iTunes folder (like Apple's web site told me to do), and went into preferences and pointed the library to my external. After that, I deleted the files from my internal, and voila, everything was working perfectly.
However, I turned my computer off, and the next day plugged my external in, and opened iTunes, but there was no library, just the iTunes intro screen.

I am really excited to have the extra space. I purchased this MBP a few months ago and would like to do a fresh install of Leopard. I have an external hard drive that I have not used yet and was wondering of the best way to install Leopard on the hard drive and then add my itunes library and iphoto library to the fresh 640gb hard drive. What kind of score do you imagine I will have once I upgrade the hard drive and bump the Ram to 4GB.
