Applications :: Expanding Protected Files With Stuffit
Aug 2, 2009
When I attempt to expand password protected files using Stuffit Expander 13.0.3, I get an error saying "An error occurred attempting to expand /Users. The structure of the archive is damaged (error #17540)". I don't however get these errors when expanding files that aren't password protected, they expand normally with Stuffit. I've tried using the Archive Utility.app but it just creates a zip file and creates another rar file.

Upgraded to Snow Leopard from Leopard.
Was using a dongal from Orange UK - OK on Leopard but freezes the Apple laptop.
Have checked that it is supposed the be alright for the administrator to have access read and write.
Downloaded additional update software from Orange which is zipped.
Cannot get Stuffit to open as write protected and do not know what other file could be of use. The following is the error message:
The destination folder "/Applications/StuffIt 12" is currently write-protected. select another destination.

In dreaded Microsoft word I use "Save As", then click "Options" and there is the option to save my file with a password so that my kids can't get in and muck up my business writing.
I can't see "Options" under "Save as" but I'm just trialling iWorks (full iWorks disc arrives next week).

Is there a way to do this ? When I try to open any file that is password protected, I get an error that the file 'in an incompatible format' (if memory serves, I'm away from my Mac right now). I can open it fine in NeoOffice, but it never works in Number '08. I'd consider going to iWork '09 if the problem has been addressed there.

I'm using my girlfriends mac and trying to download RAR files. I know nothing about computers but I don't have any problem with most files. If I click to download a zip file Stuffit comes up as the default to unarchive. Correct me if I'm wrong but Stuffit should work for RAR files as well right?
I would just change my preferences to Stuffit as the default for RAR's but I can't find it. I know this seems stupid and I am a total n00b but I can't find it anywhere (in my apps which is where I thought it would be.)

I can't get Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit or 32bit) to install on my mid 2010 MBP 2.4 Core2Duo 4Gb Ram 250gb hdd). I created a 40gb partition successfully, but I only have A DVD of Windows 7 Upgrade. I have an ISO (legally obtained) of the full version. When I try to install from the upgrade disc with custom installation, not upgrade, I get to "Expanding Windows Files" and then it hangs at 0% forever. I have a 320gb external hard drive. I have already restored my computer with Time Machine today. Still, no luck.

I need to create a split archive of a file over 1GB for posting on my blog. I'd like it to be in RAR format so that both Mac and PC users can access it. I heard I could do it with Stuffit Deluxe so I bought it and now I'm seeing no such option. Neither to create split archives or to create RAR archives, let alone both.
Does anyone know how to do this with Stuffit Deluxe? If not, can you suggest another software?

So does this mean Blu-Ray not making sales numbers like they want? This is definitely the reason why the 40GB AppleTV was discontinued it can't hold a lot of HD content.

My friends HDD corrupted its self, so i've got it plugged into my computer and can see all the files through Ubuntu.
Now, when i say Files, i mean i can see all the folders and some files.
All the Folders are there, but like in windows an account has been made and a password put on it, so i can't copy these folders across to my computer because i can't read them so to speak.
I can get all the passwords if need be, but i don't get a password prompt or anything?
Any ideas how to get round it?

I have a Time Machine drive (1 TB) that contains files going back over a year that I would like to delete in order to free up space on the drive. Locating and trashing the files doesn't work as I get a dialogue box telling me that the drive can't be altered. I assume that is due to the protected database. Is there any way to delete these files? I am running OS 10.6.4 on a MacPro. The Time Machine drive is on an external Firewire drive.

I've got a Netgear DG834G V3 router. I've just updated the firmware to the latest one on Netgear's site, which unveiled a whole host of new security settings. After a bit of research I opted for WPA2-PSK (WiFi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key). Is this the best thing to go for out of the below options:
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key)
WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK
WPA-802.1x
WPA2-802.1x
WPA-802.1x+WPA2-802.1x
I've got myself a random password (thanks to a generator website) and I'm not allowing the broadcast of the name (SSID).

Finder constantly expands the same couple of folders on my external drive. The folders have hundreds of photos and scrolling is a pain. I 'unexpand' them and disconnect the drive, then reconnect, open it and the exact same folders are open again. Very, very aggravating.

I have a Mac mini and a Mac Book Pro. What I would like to do is use the Mac mini as a music jukebox. It will be connected to my stereo to play music. I want to know if it is possible to connect a 1TB external drive to the Mac mini and when I open iTunes have the music from that 1TB drive available. Basically I want to increase my music selection to 1TB of songs to choose from. Is there any software that will let me do this or is this impossible?

I'm on my first Mac, a 15" 2010 MBP (2.4 Ghz), and I'm absolutely loving the multi-touch trackpad. It makes browsing things so much easier and even more pleasurable.
One thing that I just this second thought of is how to expand the gesture use more.
I'm in Mozilla now, and I moused up to the refresh button, and thought "what if I could refresh the page by just making a swirling gesture on the trackpad? That'd be pretty damn cool." This could also apply to the "stop" button by making an X gesture.

What's happening? I have an early 06 iMac.
