Applications :: Can't Get Rid Of An Icon In My Task Bar?
Sep 4, 2010
There is this icon on my task bar that I can't seem to get rid of. I downloaded and installed an application to format an external drive, then when I wasn't happy with it, I deleted it. Unfortunately, when I deleted it, it didn't delete the icon it put in my task bar. I can click on it and get a menu and do a number of things. At the bottom of the menu I can choose "Disable DrivePulse". Nothing happens! I go to system preferences and look at my login items and it's not there! I find it in activity monitor, quit it from there, and it comes back a second later! I search my mac for Drive Pulse and Drive Genius 3 and I get no results! Can somebody help me disable this nuisance permanently? Is there a hidden file on my HD I have to delete?

I have a late 2008 macbook unibody. The computer won't go into sleep mode with the lid closed or if I hit the power button. i have to manually do it with the apple icon in the top of the screen.
The ambient light that blinks while in sleep doesn't light up when I do this either. Its been like this ever since Lion, Mountain Lion and now Mavericks. I've done a clean install of Maverick on a brand new HDD. No change.
I have modified the computer since I've owned it. Upgraded from the OEM 2GB of memory to 4GB which is the max for my model. It didn't come with the illuminated keyboard so I bought the backlit one and installed. I also had to swap the motherboard to do this since my original did not have the backlight connector.
Note the old motherboard also had the same problem with the computer not going into sleep. So I don't believe its a hardware issue. (yes I plugged everything in and seated everything in a appropriate manner, I build custom PC's for friends all the time so what to do and what not to do).
I have checked my sharing preferences and they're all unchecked as this is a fresh install of mavericks. Everything else is all set to system defaults.

I have a WD Passport. I installed the latest firmware, and smartware software, in the hope I could remove that dratted "VCD" icon from popping up each time I connect the smartware drive. The smartware software allowed me to change the settings so that I could disable the drive.
Now I no longer need the software, but the it seems to have installed a "quick view" icon on the task bar! (near the clock / date etc).
I looked in "Login Items", but it doesn't seem to start anyprogram on startup, and I can't drag it off the task bar.
How can I remove this? There doesn't seem to be any setting within Smartware to remove this. Curse you Smartware!

Does anyone know of a task app that has the option to remain open and like pinned to the desktop? I've found some nice to-do apps that ive tried to use by my biggest problem is that if I dont see it all the time, I wont get it done- and I usually only open the app to add things to my "list" only to see things that I was supposed to have done!!
I realize that I could just leave the application open all the time, but that just doesn't seem to work for me, I like to see my background and I dont like having numerous windows open...

I just tried to move some critical data from one drive to another and the operation froze. The folder showed up in the destination but then the copy wouldn't start. What was the problem? Apple apparently set its automatic reminder for the Software Update application to a higher priority than the user task. After a few seconds of being frozen, the folder disappeared from its destination and the Software Update window appeared.
Why is a background application more important than a file copy that was initiated by the user? What was so important that it had to interrupt my file copy? A Safari point update, something about Digital Camera RAW Compatibility for iPhoto and Aperture 3 (neither of which I use), and an iLife Support point update (which I also don't use). Is there a way to tell OS X that whatever I'm doing with copying or moving files should always have a higher priority than any background tasks?

I have a task called 'named' running and it's taking up 100% of a single core (swtiches cores periodically, but 100% when it does). Any idea what this is and whether I can kill it? It looks like it belongs to Internet Sharing.
Edit: I just turned IS off and it disappeared. Turned IS back on and it seems to have killed 'named'.

recently I've noticed that my task bar doesn't let me know what programs are running. For instance, normally when a program is open, there's a small white dot under the icon, meaning the program is open. Now that doesn't appear anymore. Can anyone explain how I can turn this option back on? I might have inadvertently shut it off somehow.

I have a new Mac Pro (standard 2.8 configuration with 3 X 250GB in software RAID0) at my cable station at college. I was expecting this thing to be a real screamer, but I find myself a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's still quite fast. But for CPU-intensive task in Final Cut Studio, I find it to be slower than it should be. For example, compressing a 6 GB DV file for an iPhone is taking 32 minutes. CPU usage is only around 30% per core. I've never been able to drive CPU usage above this level in any task (Handbrake, Final Cut rendering, etc.) I know that not all software is able to fully use all of the cores, but this doesn't make sense to me. Is this normal performance? Or could something wrong with the Mac Pro?

Every day NASA puts up an "Image of the Day" Sometimes it is a really cool nightscape, sometimes it is great hubble photography, etc... I've been opening up the page every day and right clicking on the new image and saving it to a folder. Is there a way to automate this?
I'd love for my computer to automatically go to the page with the new image on it and save it to a folder. Sometimes I jsut don't have the time to get over to the page, or I jsut simply forget. Is there a way to automate this process?

Is there any specific reason Kernel_Task seems to think he owns the place? What gives? It's like I turn my MacBook on and he's all like "oh hai! Ize just a system task! 50mb of memory? That's cool that's cool" Then only 2 hours later he's all like "Nah man, I just needed some more room see, it's like 120mb ain't dat much, k?"
I know that OS X handles ram real good and all, by freeing memory when it's required for higher-priority tasks, but I also know that it takes a bit more time to clear that memory AND re-allocate it...
So, is this a memory leak? And while I'm at it what about iChat Agent and Colloquy that are battling out to be RAM champ?
OH, and I haz 2gb installed at the moment.

Mac OSX 10.5.6When I have several applications running and one finishes a task it automatically changes to that space without asking. This is very annoying when I am in the middle of something in another application in another space. Is it possible to just get the icon to bounce instead of changing spaces like it did before using spaces.

I've been recently realizing that every time i use safari or socialite for a few mins I get a lot of 'beach ball' time. The application would show in red (not responding) in activity monitor and kernel_task would have over 1,900 threads, that will decrease slowly after I force quit the applications.

My computer keeps freezing and applications keep shutting down unexpectantly. So when I went into the activity monitor I saw that Kernal_task and inkjet1 seem to be taking up the most CPU, threads, and memory. What are they? How can I make my computer more efficient? Are these processess causing my computer to be so slow and freezy?

I have been experiencing the fan running at high rpm and the computer completely slowing down when there is slight pressure applied to the bottom of my macbook pro. I went on Activity Monitor and it shows kernel_task running at over 100% cpu usage. I have already tried resetting PRAM and SMC but those did not work.

I was working on my Mac but is coming very slow sometimes so I found the problem is the kernel task.
Lex I already use the Clean My Mac and since the first time I delete a lot of things I don't even remember how many. Should I format my drive?
About the iCleanMemory so the system will clear the RAM by it self or should I do something different or use another program?

I have a workflow that opens a list of webpages into tabs. It worked beautifully on Mavericks. After upgrading to Yosemite, I get the following error for most pages in the list, though some do seem to work: You can’t open the application “Safari” because it is not responding.
It seems that automator is submitting page calls faster than Safari can handle them, but I see no option to add a delay on the display of pages.
The same error occurs when "Google Chrome" or "Firefox" is set as the default browser, which leads me to believe it is an issue with automator or the display webpages task, not safari.

Using Photoshop CS or CS2 (or PS 7)
1.) Download Image from [URL]
2.) Save it to computer and then open it up in Photoshop
3.) From there please apply a 'radial blur' with the settings at:
Amount = 100
Blur Method = Spin
Quality = Best
Using a stop watch / ps timer see how long it takes to apply this filter. I just want to see what mac systems can do, be it a powermac dual 2.7 or an older dual 1.8 or even an ibook. Please list your mac system, cpu details, amount of ram and the time it took for the test, just so we can get an idea of how different mac machines handle this task.

I had my first leopard problem on my 1.67 15" powerbook last night. I lost bluetooth so I restarted, I went to the activity monitor and there was a kernel task eating up 152 mb of my ram. All updates are current and I have 2gb of ram. Any ideas as to what this action is doing. I also have a dual 2.4 g5 with 3.5 gb of ram(but no kernel task issues).

I've noticed this on my MacBook Air and also on a friends MacBook so it is in no way unique to this model. In Photo Booth both models seem unable to render the effects at a moderately respectable FPS and fluidity is severely impinged. This is especially noticed when keying the background out and recording video from that. It seems to bring the MBA to it's knees! How can such a novelty application have such a drain on system resources? You would think Apple would have designed the application in mind of the constraints of these models. The MBA isn't especially cheap and if potential customers are seeing it failing to render a novelty webcam application properly I don't think they are going to be particularly impressed.
I'm not particularly impressed and I've bought one. Performance in Photoshop and Illustrator is exquisite, I haven't had any problems and filters etc can be applied quickly. Photo Booth is the one application that I have noticed the MBA struggle to perform in the past week I have been using it. The iSight camera seems to be of a lower quality than for instance the MacBook due to apparent high levels of noise. iSight camera live footage appears to lag behind by about 1 second in Photo Booth and by about 3 seconds in iMovie. The Intel GMA X3100 has proved to be great in rendering streaming Quicktime H.264 720p media from the Quicktime HD Gallery but unable to work Photo Booth properly?
