Safari now only display my bookmark bar and nothing else. I thought it could be recent extensions installed but I've turned extensions of and its still only showing the bookmark bar.

Everything else is there, can link from my bookmarks and from Google, but can't type in new addresses, there's no place for them. I tried downloading a new version of Safari, but it does the same thing. My backup browser, Firefox is unaffected.

For example.
In firefox, when I start typing macrumors, I get forums.macrumors, macrumors....
Yesterday afternoon I opened up safari and found it looked somewhat naked. My bookmark bar was missing. I went into preferances, and it was still checked. I unchecked it, and checked it again. Quit safari.
Restarted. Nothing seems to get it back. An ideas as to what happened, or how I can fix it?
I was in the middle of adding new contacts and two very strange things happened.
1) After adding the second to last contact, I clicked on "All" to start dragging contacts into a new group and there were all these blank address cards in amongst my regular addresses - as if I had accidentally held down apple N and created a whole bunch of new cards inadvertently - but I had not done this - I was adding people one by one - all morning and it had been going just fine.
2) I still had a couple contacts to add so I thought, well I'll just fill in one of these blank cards - don't know where they came from, maybe I did something, so I better just use them - BIG MISTAKE - poof! Address Book is now gone - completely empty and in Mail, all my address history is also gone.
I clicked undo till I couldn't und anymore and although it said 'undoing new entry', undoing x, undoing y - nothing was really changing - everything was still gone.
Apple freak BF then fiddled and fiddled and after half and hour found the meta data files with all kinds of gobbledy gook numbers and letters in the prefix but can't get them back into Address Book to open...
Why has this happened - it felt like some sort of viral attack but I though macs don't get those - what other weird stuff is going on in there and can I prevent this weirdness from corrupting other programs - mail? calendar? Is that possible or silly? And of course most importantly can I get my addresses back?
My Address Book contacts have disappeared twice; moreover, I can't seem to find them on Time Machine so that I can restore them. Is anyone else having this problem, and 1. how do I get my contacts back, and 2. how do I prevent this happening again?

Everytime I go to the address bar and start typing it will give me a list of sites from history/bookmarks to choose from. For example if I type www.e it will come up with every page I've visited beginning with E. Obviously I can clear my history, but how do I stop it displaying sites from my bookmarks? I use my Mac around a lot of people and don't want everyone seeing every other site I've visited.

View 17 Replies View RelatedI've been searching for the missing link in Safari - the one thing that I need to stop using Firefox. I'd like to duplicate the functionality of the Awesome Bar in Firefox, which searches browsing history when a phrase is typed into the address bar. For example, if I want to listen to a youtube song, I could just type "Radiohead Paranoid Android" into the address bar, and assuming I had listened to it before, the link would pop up. Very handy. Unfortunately, in Safari, you have to type in "youtu..." and hope that you've listened to the song enough for it to appear in your few history links. Not very intuitive.
Are there any plugins to simulate this functionality? I tried Glims, and while it's completely awesome, it unfortunately doesn't help me here. I also tried the Quicksilver Safari Plugin, and while it technically does the job, it's just a tad clunky, and also has the annoying habit of opening a new browser window.
I closed Safari then opened it and now my address bar is gone?

I'm finding it slightly annoying that in Safari 5.0, whenever I hit CMD+T to open a new tab, my cursor automatically starts in the google search box on the web page, and not in the address bar. Not only that, but I can't simply hit SHIFT-TAB to go backwards to the address bar.
I'm a designer, so I'm constantly using shortcuts, not only in my design programs, but also in Safari, iTunes, etc. It would be nice to see a fix for this, so I can keep my hands on the keyboard, and off of my mouse.
It keeps autofilling my work info and I want it to use my home info. I don't want to delete anything, but is there anyway to set a default or a level of priority?

Then I tried to customize the toolbar but when I click on "Customize Toolbar", nothing happens (same with when I try it from the menu bar). Now I've been clicking around a bit and I accidentally removed the address bar and now I have to navigate via Wikipedia: Google Search URL. Does anybody know how to customize the toolbar? I have re-downloaded safari already

View 2 Replies View RelatedA co-worker (who isn't English speaking) would like to change Safari so that when he enters a site name into the address bar (for example "ford") that Safari doesn't automatically add ".com" to the address. Instead he wants the browser to use ".ch" (Switzerland) as the default autocomplete in the address line. Anyone know how we can change that (maybe in Terminal)..?
View 2 Replies View Relatedin firefox, if you type two words in the URL bar, it will pickup the site. For example, my firefox will list every url i've been to in order of popularity if type mac - (it will show macrumours, apple, 9to5mac, etc)
if i type mac on safari it will list all url's beginning with the word mac.
How do i get safari to behave like firefox? You can see the benefits of firefox as getting to a url you don't quite remember is easy.
When I auto-fill forms in safari it uses my wrong email address. How I can specify which email address to use?

When I click on the Safari icon in the dock the Safari tool bar opens at the top of my screen but the Top Sites screen does not display. Likewise, if I click on a link in History or Bookmarks, the wepage does not display on the screen. I think the sites are opening because I opened a link with audio and the audio plays OK, but no web page displays.
