Sep 27, 2009Microsoft Word Mail Merge launches a file converter when using Excel files as the data source. Nothing new about that. However, when using Mail Merge in Word 2008 and an Excel xlsx file as data source under OS X 10.6, the file converter will not recognize the file unless the extension .xlsx is actually appended to the file name. The file converter used by Word 2008 still recognizes xls files with or without the extension appended, as did the file converter used by Word X.

"You can't open the application Microsoft Word because PowerPC applications are no longer supported". Didn't see any warning of this pre-installation. Didn't see any warning of this pre-installation. I paid for these two softwares and use them daily on my iMac. Need an urgent fix to access previous files. Any solutions to install a fix perhaps, and then re-install the software from my back up? Plus any Apple solutions to no longer having iWeb?

May 18, 2009I have these Numbers files but need to send them to someone who is using a pc with MS Excel. She won't be able to read the files if they are left as .numbers. The odd thing is that I have successfully saved some of the files as .xls and .xls.xls and even some as .xls.numbers.
However, I have lost data when doing some of these savings - I have been taking the .numbers file and trying to save it as .xls but when I open the newly-saved file there's nothing there. Please look at the attached snapshot of my folder structure. Can you anything in there that might be causing my problem? The red arrows are just to highlight the ones I'm particularly interested in.

Here's what happens: I create a Keynote '08 document and export it as Power Point. If I either double-click or try to open from within PPT '08, I get a crash stating that PPT has encountered an error and needs to quit. This happens EVERY time with EVERY single exported presentation. Oddly, it never happened in PPT '04.

Jan 9, 2009I transferred a Powerpoint 2008 presentation using a USB memory stick from my new iMac (latest OSX) to an older iMac (OSX 10.4.11) but could not open the file either by double-click or from the Powerpoint 2004 application on that computer. The file icon as transferred is a Zip file and when I double-click iI get a window saying 'Archiving file ...' but it doesn't open. Neither do I get an unzipped icon to open. I made additional space available on my drive (90GB now) and ran Disk Warrior to fix permissions and check the hard drive. Today I am still having hte problem. I was able to get Word to open up a blank document but then it immediately crashed. I am trying to figure out if I can solve this without having to reinstall as my installation disks are several years old and I don't have them with me.
