IMac :: Hard Drive Not Using Full Amount Of Space

Apr 11, 2010

So I must have partitioned this hard drive (it's still somewhat new), and now, when I try to resize it to its normal setting with no partitions, it tells me I can't. Here are some screenshots documenting what I'm talking about:

Original:
When I resize it:
The popup before I choose "partition":
The error message:

I understand that I'm trying to partition something with only one partition, but I could have sworn that just expanding the partition to make it full would take care of the problem and let me get back that unused space (all 200 gigs worth). How to reclaim that unused space without losing my current data?

OS X :: IMac 2.4 GHz With 4 GB SDRAM Running 10.6.2 Suddenly Full Hard Drive

Dec 26, 2009

maybe I haven't been paying attention but my HD seems to have a misc 50-150 GB of stuff on there that didn't seem to be there before, nor can I account for what it is. I have opened up the HD and gotten "info" on all folders there. The total amount of storage does not equal what the HD tells me I have. I get "info" on the HD and it says 300 GB used (20 GB left). The folders and size are as follows as listed on my HD:

Users: 154.46 GB
World of Warcraft (ashamed faced): 21.28 GB
Applications: 3.68 GB
Library: 6.34 GB
System: 4.49 GB
Limewire: 49.4 MB
Incompatible Software (?): 1.6 MB
Developer: 165 KB
iTunesShut: 479 KB

For a grand total of: 190.39 GB or so (not including the 50 mb or 644 kb) I'll include what is on my desktop as well (I assume it is already included on the list above but just incase).........

MacBook Pro :: Start Up Disc Full - Different From Full Hard Drive?

Jun 5, 2012

I have a mac book pro...one of the older models...around 5 or 6 years old..the silver one with the silver around the screen part. Running Mac OS X 10.6.8,

2.33 GHz, 2GB ram.

Lately my computer has been rediculously slow with everything, but aside from that my issue is with my start up disc. I would have over 1.5 GB of space left, open up a photoshop file...make some alterations and save...and all of a sudden I have NO SPACE left. These alterations created the photoshop file to be like 50mb more. Its a 200mb file. So how can I go from 1.5 gigs to saving a 200mb .psd file and all of a sudden 0 hd space?

Sometimes I couldnt even save the .psd because when I opened it all of a sudden I have half a gig now. And even if I had half a gig why wouldnt I be able to save? I go to save and sometimes it says "your start up disc us full" - Is this different than my harddrive?

Is photoshop using some sort of weird caching thing?

OS X :: Hard Drive Containing Aperture Library Crashed

Sep 26, 2010

Luckily, this is not my primary Aperture library, but another one that I started a few weeks ago as I thought my first was getting a bit large. I am unable to open Aperture at all, nor can I copy to or from the drive. Because the drive is (I believe) bad, I can't repair the library, plus, as I mentioned, I can't open Aperture anyways. I can pull the drive, but then how do I get Aperture to redirect itself so that it opens my original library, instead of trying to open this new one? Pulled the suspicious drive from my Mac Pro. On restarting, Aperture asked which Library I wanted, adding that one was no longer available. So, I'm back on the original library and things look to be running fine. Unfortunately, I hadn't vaulted yet, so the last month is probably gone. Luckily, I think I already exported the few keepers I had during that time.

Mac Pro :: Configure Hard Drive Bays For Use With FCP Aperture?

Nov 13, 2009

I just placed an order for a 2.93 Quad core, a 640gb HD in bay 1, 6gb ram with a 4870 card(didn't want to buy and flash my own as this mac pro is a gift from a friend). I really want to get a 128 SSD as OS and app drive, but can't afford it. So I will just stick with the 640gb. I will most likely raid 0 two 1gb disks in bay 2 and 3 as a scratch disk for FCP, would it be a good idea to put my aperture library on there as well for faster speed? I have around 113gb of photos in my aperture library currently. Finally, I will use bay 4 as a back up for the OS and apps. I have a drobo for data storage.

Aperture :: Import Does Not See Files On Hard Drive

Dec 7, 2014

This happens again and again, and it's EXTREMELY irritating.

I am trying to import some existing JPEGs on my Desktop. When I try Import in Aperture, the file browser simply does not see most files and folders. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. It seems to happen on a whim. This is very bad, I have just about had it with Aperture. And yes, permissions are set correctly.

On what basis Aperture sees or does not see certain files/folders?

MacBook :: Hard Drive Is Almost Full?

When finished I did a 'save as' and did not pay attention where the default save was located.  When I tried to find the file it was not easily located in the usual places.  Finally, I found it in an apparent folder labeled "mail downloads"  My question is what is this file - temporary files?  Can the files in this folder be deleted to free up space?  Will I lose the attachments from emails in my box?

OS X :: External Hard Drive For Photos - Tiger?

Sep 11, 2010

Having been burning off my photos onto CDs for the past few years, I have been told it would be better to back them up onto an external hard drive (to speed up my computer and to have another back up... I am a heavy, heavy photograph user). My questions are:

1. Is it possible to completely back up my hard drive, and then use this hard drive in an ongoing capacity (sorry, I don't know the technical term!) on a daily basis using photoshop/bridge? Would this be incredibly slow?
2. What does partitioning (a word I've stumbled across in my googling) do/is this how I should be doing the above? My main objective, other than having an external back up, is to take 'bridge' and all my photographs off my internal hard drive.

OS X :: Storing Photos On External Hard Drive

Jul 6, 2007

I have a huge catch of photos that I am currently scanning and would like to store digitaly, numbering in the thousands. Right now I'm using iphoto to store the ones I have scanned, but I have only a macbook with an 80gb hardrive, and an external drive of 320gb. Evantually i am going to run out of room. I am wondering what is the best way to transfer the photos to the external drive, so that I can delete the current photos from my internal drive to free up space, then later, when I have added more photos, transfer those to the external drive, without having to have all of them in the iphoto library photo catch? I am concerned that if they are all stored in the iphoto library folder on the external drive, then eventurlly, this folder will be too big to reload on my computer. Also, when I erased the photos already stored in the external drive from the internal, then added new ones, then tried to put those in the external drive from iphoto, the external asks me if I want to overwrite the iphoto library it has stored because the folder names are the same. I would like to be able to have several iphoto library files on the external drive, so they don't all go into one huge file. Does that make sense? If anyone has any experience with organizing a huge catch of photos, I would love to hear it, as this is relatively new to me.

OS X :: Retrieve Photos Off - External Hard Drive

Sep 3, 2009

I am a new mac user with a used Macbook. I believe it is from 2007, but has been upgraded several times. I got this Macbook from my boyfriend. He moved overseas for a religious mission. I am not able to call him, only send letters. I am having an issue with the laptop and need help asap. Before he left, he cleared EVERYTHING off his Macbook onto an external hard drive to give me more space. The only problem is, he cleared too much off! We had a year's worth of pictures of us that were stored only on his laptop. Now I don't have a single copy of those photo's. I have access to his external hard drive, but I have no idea how to use it to retrieve those pictures. I believe all his pictures are stored on iPhoto. I really want those pictures off his hard drive, but I don't want to do anything to mess up the rest of the valuable information he has on the external hard drive. How do I get copies of the pictures off the hard drive and back onto the Macbook?

Desktops :: Full Hard Drive On Mac Mini

Jul 2, 2010

My son is having a BIG problem with his Mac Mini. His Mini has a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, memory of 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and runs Mac OS X Version 10.6.3. He has Time Machine and also a 1.5TB desktop hard drive. From time to time, he has been getting pop-up warnings that his internal hard drive was about to become full. He would then do some deleting and things would be fine until the next pop-up. Last week, after watching some videos on Utube, he tried to open iTunes and, instead of a pop-up, got an error message with some numbers (which he didn't write down). It began the usual routine, starting with a white screen with the apple logo in the center and the loading circle spinning right below it. After that, it normally goes to a light blue screen and then loads the desktop, but this time (and ever since) it stopped at the blue screen, empty except for the message "Hard Drive Full, Please Delete Data".

Apparently the screensaver still works, but not much else -- like the Finder. He said that he did get something to appear on the top bar by taking the batteries out of his Apple Bluetooth keyboard, bringing up the "Bluetooth Setup Assistant", but once a wired keyboard is plugged in, everything on the top bar disappears (since the Mac sees a keyboard). He was going to do a "restore" and, in preparation, thought he had done a successful back-up to his external hard drive using the Time Machine feature. However, when he checked the Time Machine under System Preferences it said that the external HD had nearly 1.5 TB unused (only a couple hundred pictures or so on it) and the Time Machine was supposed to put about 70GB on there. So now he is concerned that he didn't/can't do a back-up.

OS X :: Hard Drive Almost Full - What Can Be Deleted In Library

Oct 8, 2010

Well, a little about me, I'm a proficient computer user, however, in my semi-recent switch to Mac, I am going through the learning curve of the ins and outs of Mac OS X. I'm a video and audio editor and do a lot of graphic design work as well. So, I have a 320GB (~300GB usable) drive with Mac OS 10.5.8 and a whole lot of software installed. This is a production machine, so I don't want to do anything experimental with it. Hopefully someone with expertise in the area of cleaning cache and needless files will drop by this thread.

Here's the basic rundown of what's on the drive:
/Library = 62GB
/Apps = 22GB
/Users.../Library = 87GB
/Users.../Docs&Desktop&Music&Movies&Pictures = 90GB
Other = ~20GB
Free space = ~20GB

I have plenty of external drive space, so I can move a lot of the User stuff off and clear it up for now, but I just can't understand why the Libraries are so big. But this is because I don't know that much about Mac OS X. Are there any no brainer places to clean cache and unnecessary files? I have read around a bit and so I am not going to be poking around in the Libraries unless I know what I'm doing. I'm cautious because like I said, this is a production machine.

OS X :: Macbook Pro Hard Drive Completely Full?

Dec 5, 2010

Not exactly sure what happened, but I think it has something to do with the new iPhoto? I booted it for the 1st time off my external drive to create a X-Mas Card and imported 4 photos into it. Don't know if after opening it, it attempted to import all the photos from my external drive to my internal drive? Don't know why it would do that but there is no sign of it in the Pictures folder. Any ideas? Only other thing I did was sync my iPad, so I went into my backups and deleted all those files and it freed up 16gb. I started last night with 44 gb and don't know where in the f the rest of my space went? I've used DriveSlim to attempt to find any wasted space, but nothing turned up Is there a way to see specifically what happened last night?? I have Time Machine running I've restarted my comp, and still stuck around 16gbs......clueless as to where this Hard-drive space is being used. I've gone thru all my main folders (pictures, music, movies, etc...) and its not being wasted their....has to be hiding somewhere in my Library or what?
