Start Up MacBook And Get A Folder
Jun 15, 2012
My MacBook is from 2008, and I have a new Air on the way. Today I shut my Mac down, came to school and when I pressed the power button instead of the Apple logo coming up a folder with a question mark on it was flashing. I pressed the power button to turn it off, then it did the same thing when I booted it up again. Finally loaded on the 3rd try, and I just shut it down again and it booted up fine.Just wondering what this may be, is it having difficulty finding the harddrive?

According to my lil bro, the computer landed screen down. Now whenever he tries booting his Mac, a folder icon appears on the screen and the HDD makes a continuous skipping noise. I'm guessing a new HDD will fix the problem?

I have a 13" unibody MacBook running 10.5.8
When I start it up I get the Apple "chime" then the flashing folder with a question mark. Have tried all the standard procedures, ie. reset PRam, try to reboot i safe mode, single use mode etc... to no avail.
I can reboot from the install drive.
When I go to disk utilities my System Hard Drive shows up, passes Repair Disk Permissions as well as Repair Disk.
I can even go into Images>Scan Image for Restore and see all the files on my HD are still there - Documents, Photos, Apps, Desktop, Music. It shows how many folders and files there are. I can aslo go into System Profiler from the startup disk and the HD structure seems fine. So, I don't believe I have a catastrophic HD failure, but something else with hardware etc... Is there a ROM chip on a Mac that holds boot info similar to a Windows machine that has a BIOS chip? IF so, has anyone heard of these going bad?
I am not a hardware guru, but it seems it is not reading the startup files. So, I reinstalled the system using Archive my data and it still will not boot. I really need to save the data off this HD. It is under warranty.

Today my I had used my macbook like normal and all of the sudden it was frozen for an extended period of time and would not respond so I had to hit the power button. When I turned it back on a folder with a question mark flashed on the screen. I did some troubleshooting and tried "safe booting" but it took forever and it didn't fix anything. I don't have my original installation DVD because I am a college student at home for spring break and it is at my house back at school.

my Macbook wont start-up. When I switch it on it comes up with a flashing folder with a question mark in. I have been advised to start from my Mac OS X installation disk.
However, the website says "Insert your Mac OS X installation disc (if you have discs with both versions, use whichever is closest to the Mac OS X version installed on your Mac; do not use a startup disc which came with a different Mac or which contains an earlier version of Mac OS X)."
My original installation disks are Mac OS X 10.4. But I have been upgrading my system. My last upgrade was to Mac OS X 10.6.
Which disk do I use? Do I use the 10.6, as this is the one with the current operating system or do I use 10.4 as this was the original disk that was bought with the macbook.

My macbook pro, upon start-up, shows the apple logo for a short amount of time then either a prohibited sign or a folder with a question mark gets shown and the computer does not start-up. I have re-installed the OS but it did not seem to work. Any ideas?

disk utility is unable to repair the "Macintosh HD" disk. Re-installing mountain lion is not an option due to the computer's inability to detect the HDD disk. How do I differentiate between a corrupted (dead) hard drive or a broken SATA cable (in which acts as a medium)?Â

I replaced my hard drive after it crashed. I formatted the new drive and installed mavericks from a bootable flash drive. I first tried installing lion over the internet, it took over 40 hours to load on an ethernet cable and quit when it was 98% done saying it could not download additional components. I then tried the flash drive thing, which was just as painful as a process. It would not install on my hard drive, saying the partition was damaged and needed to be repaired, however disk utility could not repair it.
I recreated the partition about 50 times and it never worked. Then I erased the hard drive and started over, and mavericks was able to install. I used my computer for about an hour, setting everything up and what not. I then opened my computer for the first time since, and nothing would work. It wouldn't even restart or shut down. So I forced the power off and when I turned it back on I saw the flashing file with a question mark again.

Just came back from the Genius Bar at Apple Amsterdam. Both iTunes and iPhoto had problems launching and libraries were not loading. Ruled out hardware problems so they tried installing OS Snow Leopard over my 10.5.8 in a way to keep my documents safe. All went well until halfway it said it couldn't install succesfully. Made a new appointment for in 3 days from now. They would then overwrite the current OS with the new one so i should go home and make sure to back up all my files in the meantime. Problem is that when i came home and started my laptop i got a blank/white screen with a blinking documents folder symbol with a question mark in it! Does anybody know what it means and will i be able to ever make a back up of my documents?

Saturday, my Macbook was working ok and I left it for a few minutes. When I returned, it instructed me to press and hold the power button to restart it. I did, but the only thing that came up (and still does) is the gray folder with a ? flashing. I took it to the Apple store and they said the hard drive was dead and wanted to sell me another hard drive. A different computer repair person (not at Apple) told me that he could re-install the operating system but that all the files would have to be wiped from the hard drive.. Now, I'm just a bit confused and think this hard drive might be salvagable. The Apple store said the hard drive is not even visible with the test they ran. However, Apple.com gives me an option to insert the installation disc and try rebooting. I bought this remanufactured and it did not come with a disc. I do NOT have those discs.Â
Question: is there anything that I can do to recover the hard drive, or, at least, the files I stored there? I just restarted it, held down Cntrl C and the screen is gray with no flashing ?.Â

I have a lamp style iMac and when I boot it up I get the flashing folder from the mac face to the question mark. I booted it up with the OS X DVD, but a padlock comes up. I have never set a password for this computer, except to login, and that password isn't working. Is there a way around this? I've tried everything I can think of.

When i turned on my iMac I was surprised to see a folder icon blinking as it was running fine before this. I didn't delete or install anything. Â
My DVD drive does not read properly so i am unable to boot from the installation disk, tried to boot using BootCD from Charles Soft that didnt work either. Even tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, unplugged keyboard and LAN cable as well but still no luck. Â
Read many articles online regarding this issue and it seems that my hard disk must have crashed. I don't have backup of any files.Â

Yesterday I had to reinstall Leopard on my Mac. Everything was going fine until a little while ago I turned on my Mac, and after the startup sound and a few moments of the grey Apple, a No Access symbol appeared - or a "broken folder" icon as they call it in the support pages. Suffice to say there was a panic after the events of yesterday and I made several attempts to restart, but the "broken folder" icon keeps appearing and noting happens. I have been able to boot to an external drive.
I first tried to reset NVRAM and reselect startup volume, by holding down X on startup. It showed me a message - "efiboot loaded from device.....error loading kernel". I then tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM - [URL] - but this just brought up the "broken folder" icon again - and if left for long enough a grey folder icon with a ? on it begins flashing on the screen. As best I can tell my only remaining option is to reinstall Leopard.

Just rec'd a new(er) to me Mac Pro 1.1 w/no HD & possibly bad video card 8GB memory and very dirty inside. To test this mac, I put in a new seagate barracuda SATA 1TB HD, hooked up display and tried to fire it up. Got to chime in and then the display showed a grey screen w/file folder with a question mark on it. Only had a mouse last night when trying this and my G5 has a bluetooth keyboard and the mac pro isn't bluetooth, so where do I go from here?
I'm thinking a wired keybrd would allow me to open drive bay to receive Leopard Install disc that I already own and proceed from there? I figure, once I can get this up and running and know there is no problems, I'll dismantel and clean. Also all 8 GB memory was installed on the top riser card? I reset the memory banks to 2 on the top card and 2 on the bottom card as this is what the downloaded manual shows, am I reading that right?

What I try to do is pick a photo from a defined folder ("gallery"), scale it and upload it to my Wordpress side. I automatically want to run this workflow every morning at a specific time so that the pictures changes everyday. It may sound strange that almost everything is done but two things are missing:Â
a) How do I tell Automator to use a random file from the "gallery" folder? How do I tell it to use the "gallery" folder in the first place?
b) How do I schedule that task? Is there a scheduler function somewhere that I missed?Â
Right now I use it manually as a service for images - that's why the first action is the copy action.Once the picture is scaled down to 230px and loaded into the folder "image_upload_temp" Hazel will take the file and upload it. I need to copy the file first to keep the original and scale a copy and then move it to the target folder because Hazel shall not upload the unscaled but only the scaled version.Â

A few day ago I startup up my iMac and only a folder with a question mark was shown in the screen.Â
I boot from the Lion DVD, run disk utility but the only drive I get was the DVD and disk1/Mac OS X Base System.Â
I turned off the computer and next morning I turned on agian and this time with no problems, I use it for a few days with no problems but yesterday it happens again...Â
I do run disk utility again onlu turn it off, and this morning I tried to turn it on again, but the same foder appears...I run disk utility (get the DVD and disk1) and turn it off for a few hours.Â
What I should do ? Is there any 3rd party tools that I can try do use to solve this issue ? Â
PS: when the iMac started up with no problems I run disk utility and made a repair disk to the mac HD...

I have a mid 2011 iMac running latest version of Mavericks. I recently purchased an external thunderbolt SSD and cloned my boot HD to it, excluding the user folders as these are too big for the SSD and will remain on the internal HDD, and made it the start disk. Then, once booted with the SSD, I went into users settings and mapped my user to the user folder location on the internal HDD. I then rebooted.Â
After the reboot everything is working just fine with the exception of Dropbox which first asks for my Mac user account password and then returns the following error and closes the app:Â Couldn't start DropboxThis is usually because of permissions error. Errors can also be caused by your home folder being stored on a network share.
I see involve going into the preferences in the Dropbox application and clicking the button to repair permissions, but I can't get to that because the application just quits. If I reboot using the internal HDD again I can get the application to load just fine.Â

My computer won't turn on. Earlier today while playin music it just paused itself. I minute later it resumed. Then tonight it just shut off instead of sleeping and now it won't start. All I can get if I'm lucky is the start up chime and a super quick flash of a white screen.

My computer is a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Version 10.7.3, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB memory. Start-up has become somewhat erratic. Consistently, if I close the lid on the computer it won't restart when I reopen it. I'll have to hold the power button down for about 15 seconds, let up and then press it again. Sometimes restarting after a shutdown the computer will go through the long start-up I associate with a crash shutdown. Sometimes login start-up items don't start up. Sometimes I have to click somewhere on the screen to make the menu bar at the top of the screen visible. Overall, unexpected things keep happening. Although I don't think it probably relates, Chrome is my primary browser.

Whenever I take the hard drive out my laptop just stops working and it's back to normal when I put the hard drive in, is there a way for me to use my laptop without having to physically have my start up disk (hard drive) plugged into my laptop?
