View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to set my wife up as a separate user on my mac and share my music file with her so we no longer mix up our iPhone apps. I don't want a second copy on my hard drive. I've tried one method on here HT1203 but it makes a second copy and fills up my hard drive. I do not want to share the whole media library just the music. There must be an easy way to use two iPhones with separate user ids on one Mac so we don't mix up our apps. I would have though that the great Apple would have just sorted this out when you plug in a different device.

I have my photos on my imac in my user account under pictures. This works fine and is backed up with Time Machine.I also have a MBP and want to access the iphoto library in my user account but whatever settings I use in sharing this will not work.I have heard I can put this in my shared folder but I wonder if time machine will still back this up and also if this will work.Could someone pls help me, its annoying as my itunes library is on an external hard drive and this can be accessed on both macs using the alt key.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe just bought our first iMac and we are trying to set it up for three users, my wife, my son, and I. I want to each have our own email and web bookmarks (parental controls for our son), but I want to share the iPhoto pictures between two of the three users, just not our son.

I have been trying to set up ITunes to share the library with another user on the same IMac. I have followed the details shown on Apple website but nothing is happening. Does any one have any ideas. I have copied the ITunes media file the public folder changed this in ITunes with preferences and advanced then done the same with the other user but it does not work.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI read this thread with much interest. [URL:..] While I don't need quite the storage space that guy needed, I am trying to figure out the best solution for me. New to the mac world, I have new 2.8 gHz 24" iMac (pre 9400m). I want to be able to share (read and write) all of my itunes and iphoto files with all users on the machine, and it seems as if using an external drive requires the least amount of trouble to set up to do this. I think I have 2 routes to go. I could get a raid 1 array like the WD Mybook studio II and forgo backups, using this as my raid protected file storage drive, though that post has me concerned about FW disconnection and Raid, which I don't quite understand. Since I don't need much space, I noticed Newegg has the WD studio 320gig w/ FW800 for $80 each. I figure one for media, one for time machine, and I am done, no messing with raid. I also have a fairly new 320 gig drive in a windows/linux machine I could buy a USB enclosure for and use with time machine, since buying a FW enclosure is equal in price to the WD studio 320g drive. I have been seeing issues with sleep modes on drives connected via firewire (WD especially), and have now researched my way into absolute confusion.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs it possible for two different user accounts on the same iMac to point at the same iTunes library ?
Home sharing the library that currently exists just in the Admin account does not seem to do the trick.
If so, would the library need to be re-located outside of the Admin users account, or not? For example to an external drive?
The reason for asking is that my wife and I both wish to sync our iPhones to the same set of iTunes playlists, movies, app's etc, (and iPhoto albums, but that is a different posting) but need to maintain separate user accounts on the iMac so that we can have independent Mail and Address books.
I stress that this will be on the same machine, (as the laptop has died and is to be replaced with an iPad) so there is no risk of both accounts attempting to access the library at the same time.
My wife and I have both just got iPhones. I have created a user account for her on my intel iMac and want to use the iphones on the one computer.
I need to share the iTunes library (and iphoto eventually) so I dont have to double-up everything.
I have tried dragging the Itunes Music into the shared folder... and creating aliases as described in various places on the web and in magazines, but this simply does not work. No tracks appear in my wife's itunes. There is not even 'shared library' icon on the left hand side.
Out of the box, iTunes lets you share your library with up to 5 client computers. However, 5 is the max.
I need to share my iTunes library (or a music library set up in some other way) with up to 9 clients on a local network. Does anyone know of client/server software that will let me do that? I'm pretty techy, and can work at the terminal level, etc., so it doesn't have to be an off-the-shelf solution.
I thought I'd heard of people doing this, and done a fair amount of searching, but haven't been able to find anything suitable.
Constraints:
All computers are running 10.4.11.
Right now, we don't have internet access, and may not have it any time soon (I know, I know, it's the dark ages, but I'm having to deal with bureaucracy and privacy issues). So, something like SimplifyMedia probably won't work - it seems to be dependent on internet access.
We add music fairly often, and the person who adds music is not techy, so adding tunes/updating what the clients see is either automatic, or at least easy. And, changes need to be seen by the clients immediately, or at least quickly.
I can potentially set up a file share, though this isn't ideal. Has anyone shared an iTunes library this way?
Short of copying to a jump drive, is there a better way to share TV shows that I purchased and are in my iTunes library on my iMac with the iTunes library on my iBook G4?Both computers are on the same home network and home sharing is turned on in both iTunes library's.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to be able to share one iTunes library that will be on a server between a MAC and a Windows machine.I know you have to rename one of the library files but not sure about how to go about it.It will be a brand new library. Not moving anything.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSince I've upgraded to Mavericks and iTunes 11.2.1, I have been unable to share my library on my admin machine with any of the other iMacs in my class. I used to do this via sharing and my library would show up as being shared in the available column in the classroom machines.
Now it doesn't show on any of the remote machines at all, despite them all having sharing on. I have tried to do this via Home Sharing but the client machines will not allow home sharing (error-3170).
I have two Macs, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini.I have all my music on MacBook Pro. I want to be able to access iTunes from Mac Mini. But I don't like Home Sharing, because it doesn't really sync my music, and that route keeps two separate libraries.
When I'm home, both Macs are connected to the same network. I want my Mac Mini to access MacBook Pro's iTunes Library, update new music from Mac Mini which gets reflected on MacBook Pro. So that if I consolidate the file from Mac Mini, it gets put into the hard drive of MacBook Pro.
I understand what I'm trying to do, doesn't actually put physical files on Mac Mini. If MacBook Pro is not in the network or is turned off, that I wouldn't be able to access MacBook Pro's iTunes Library.
I don't want to use any third party applications to "sync" my music. I want to be able to do it by using File Sharing and such.
I have a single iTunes library on my Macbook Pro. I would like to share between to user accounts, each with Apple ID's. What's the best way to do so? Right now, I've given the second user rights to read/write to the first users "Music" folder. But when one user adds song files, the other must "Add Folder" in order to see the new purchases. It's kind of putsy. Is there a better way?

The goal: To have all computers in the house use the same itunes library. Now the new ReadyNAS by NetGear has the option to put all the itunes music on there, and it shows up on the network as a shared library. Is there a way for multiple computers to share the same library on a external hard drive, or in this case, time capsule. I can see where a networked itunes library (like a shared computer) would work just fine for playing music, but you run into problems when say, you want to transfer songs to a ipod, iphone, etc.
One option would be for one of the computers be the main music server, and have that computer be the one to do the music transfers, but what if that computer is off. Multiple computers on same network, sharing same itunes library, but still able to manipulate the files?

New to the Mac World and trying to set things up for all our users. We have 5 (2adults,3kids) and I'm keen to be able to share some files with other members of my family and would like to know the easiest way in doing this.
A couple of things to note;
- The two adults are the admin's
- Would like to share some photos between users (family photos are usually organized by my wife so I don't get to see them)
- I'd like to let my kids view some of my videos that I've downloaded but not all of them.

My wife and I each have separate user accounts on our Imac, but we'd like to share the Iphoto library. Since my account was set up first and done so some time ago, all of our family pics are under my user account. Can we share the library so new imports populate both accounts ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed MacDrive on my Windows Vista X64 partition so that I could access my iTunes Library on my Mac partition. After installing iTunes on my Windows partition and pressing shift while it opened, iTunes asked me for an iTunes library file ending with the extension ".itl". Now, I do not have any files ending with this extension in my iTunes folder on my Mac partition. Is there anything I can do to make iTunes on Windows to read my music library on my Mac partition?

But we would like to be able to use the beta messages and for that matter mail without everyone seeing eachothers mail and messages. Is it possible to set that up using iCloud?

I have a small business with 4 computers. I'm wondering if I can keep all the user directories and shared files on a Mini with OS X server and also have the users share the applications that are on OS X server? Is this possible or can you only share the actual files, not the use of programs? I don't quite get why you'd have the user directories on the server rather than each computer.

I'm trying to share a folder between users on a single mac. I want both users to be able to read and write so the folder stays current on both accounts. I put the folder in "shared," set permissions on folder so other user can read and write, enabled file sharing, but can't find the folder on the second user's account.
View 4 Replies View RelatedBasically my question is exactly that. I am a new to mac user, and have got a new mac air. Whilst in the store setting up our new mac the people in the shop told us that we could only have 1 icloud account per user, and therefore my wife and i should set up separte user accounts. Great. However, we both want to be able to access all of our photos and our music library. I have been into the sharing folders, but i must be doing somthing wrong, because as my wife turns on iphoto in her user account, she cannot access any of our photos.
