ITunes :: Restore Locations Without Losing All Songs Etc?
Jun 10, 2012
I was following directions on a mac board on how to share my iTunes library with my kids accounts on my computer. I must have not followed the directions correctly, as now I can not listen to any music on any account including the admin.I don't remember where I got the instructions or what I did to reverse the things that I moved. How do I restore my ability to listen to all the music that I have without re-aquiring it?And then how do I get it so that I can share with the other accounts on my computer?

I have an iPod, but I just got a droid mobile phone, and I want to use them both for music. In order to get my "protected" songs purchased from the iTunes store on to the phone I have burned them on to cds and imported them as MP3s into iTunes. So now I've got over 100 duplicate songs (protected and mp3), and I want to delete the protected versions so that the remaining mp3 versions will sync with both my iPod and my droid phone.
If I delete these protected (purchased) songs from the library, will they remain in the iTunes Music folder on my pc or will they be completely removed from my hard drive, too?
Then, if they are completely deleted from my pc, is there any way to recover these deleted purchased songs if I ever wanted to in the future?

I want to "reformat" my 2010 Macbook, so I guess I want to restore it to factory settings and then restore from my Time Capsule backup. I don't know how to do this. I also don't know how to make sure I don't lose all my Google Chrome bookmarks when I restore it.

I've just discovered something in my Library, and I don't know whether I have a problem, or if I should care . . . ;^)
I have 16 songs showing in iTunes 10.0.1 from a 2-disk release called "Cafe del Mar Vol 13" - all songs play fine, and I have song and CD numbers for all songs, and each song has the box "Part of a compilation" checked.
In my main file system (same level as "Applications") is a folder called "iTunes Music", and in that is "Compilations" - further down inside that is "Cafe del Mar Vol 13" but it only has 11 of the 16 songs.[/iTunes Music/Compilations/Cafe del Mar Vol 13]
At the same level as "Compilations" is "iTunes Song Files" and in that is "Music" and inside that is another "Compilations" folder, and another "Cafe del Mar Vol 13" folder. This only has 13 of the 16 songs, and one is a duplicate. [/iTunes Music/iTunes Song Files/Music/Compilations/Cafe del Mar Vol 13]
Which of these is the "correct" Compilations folder? If I compare the files in each folder, I have all 16 songs that are displayed in iTunes, just not all in one folder. Should I be worried?
And should I bother with trying to "fix" either of these folders so they have the correct collection of 16 songs? If I move files around, will iTunes get confused?
Other possibly useful bits of info: 1) I have almost 10,000 songs; 2) I use the iVolume app to set the same playback volume level; and 3) all songs have been synching fine with my iPod Touch.

I've got a 500gb internal drive for my iMac (250gb to XP and OSX), but my iTunes library takes up 300gb. 50gb of that is music. What I'd like to do is have my music on my internal drive and keep my videos on the external, which would be powered off (it's rather noisy and doesn't have an auto-power down like my other, smaller HDD's).

so here's the deal. I have an 80GB drive in my MacBook, which is currently where my iTunes lib resides.
I also have a 250GB external drive. What I want to do is keep my music on my laptop, but store movies and TV shows on my external drive, yet still be able to access them along with my music... know what I'm saying?

I have read and plan to follow the advice that was in the insightful post titled "itunes with external hard drive instead of internal hard drive." In addition to running iTunes from an external hard drive on my iMac I would also like to run iTunes, from the same external hard drive, in my living room (with some set-up using the TV as the monitor). I'm not sure exactly how to do this. I'm assuming I need to set up more of a server to serve multiple locations. And, I'm hoping all the smart people that read this can offer some sort of assistance. The end goal would be that I could listen to iTunes (music I want to listen to) on my Mac in my office and my wife could be listening to iTunes (music that she wants to listen to) in the living room. Ideally the setup in the living room would be one in which I could change the TV input from DVR, to DVD, to iTunes, so that the iTunes input on the TV would like the iTunes program on my computer (and that would be the only possible program from that input setting).

So over the past few months I have noticed this small bug/glitch in iTunes... and it is very annoying.
I cannot drag songs from playlists into different order. iTunes just doesn't let me drag at all.
I have to quit iTunes, then restart it. It will work for one time, but as soon as I got back to "Library" and then try to go back and edit a playlist, I have to exit iTunes.
Any fix for this?

I need to reinstall itunes but do not want to lose my playlists. I keep my music on an external hard drive that is connect to my Airport router via USB. I can drag my music from the folder on the hard drive back into itunes but I dont want to have to go hunting for my songs again to fill my playlists. I have 50,000 songs and one playlist has 20,000 songs and the other has 4,600 and a few randon ones with 1,000 or so songs. What are my options? i am running the newest itunes with lion 10.7.3.

Machine - 15 inch MBPro 2007 running 3gb of ram Ran 170 GB Itunes library from a LaCie rugged HD (250GB) for a long time but recent purchase of a Apple TV meant upgrade of disk to WD Passport 500 GB.All files copied across and working fine.Until the last 24 hours.
All songs podcasts etc show the little exclamation mark next to them ... and "cannot be found" except manually.I have - verified and repaired the Passport - all ok Reset and redirected the itunes library in preferences.i am now on the painful step of deleting all tunes .. keeping files and readding them to the library which takes about 2 hours.

i want to convert all my music form MPEG to AAC -- but WITHOUT LOSING my playlists -- the order of the songs etc.
I have chucked all my old cds, so i can't "replace original" which is a trick I read about.
The way it's been so far, i can't just go into my library and highlight all the music wiht MPEG and just alt click and convert em to AAC.
unfortunatley i have over 100 playlists, so losing that would be time consuming.
it seems whenever i do convert songs, i then have to delete the old MPEGs and thereby lose the song order in any playlists with the original mpeg.

I have imported a number of Caf del Mar CD's to iTunes, and iTunes keeps scattering the tunes into several different folders in iTunes Media. It also has trouble finding album information, unless it has been downloaded from iTunes Store. Previous versions of iTunes I have tried didn't have this problem.I've tried to tidy the files manually in iTunes Media, but that usually results in duplicates, so I stopped messing with it. I actually wouldn't mind iTunes blowing up my albums into a nightmare file structure of hyper categorization in iTunes Media (Album, Album Artist, Artist, etc.) if only it recognised its own mess when I transfer the library from one iTunes library into another.
An example: I downloaded Cafe del Mar - Essential Elements featuring 13 tunes, two of these can be found in the files Cafe del Mar/Cafe del Mar Essential Elements, iTunes also created the folder Cafe del Mar/Cafe del_Mar Essential Elements containing 0 tunes!?! and the rest of the tunes are found under Rue de Soleil in the root folder, indicating ONE of the artists as the criteria for creating a folder of tunes!?!
I am trying with every fiber NOT to hate this program, and would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how I can move an iTunes Media library of aprox 54 gb from my desktop via an external harddisk onto my laptop. I have tried 4 times, and everytime the result varies. Sometime I transfer 3000 files, other times 4000. Which files follow and don't is random. I lose files tranferring to the external harddisk and lose even more files from the external disk to the new library on my Lap. Do I have to transfer song for song or can this genius program actually transfer a larger amount of files without losing half the files and duplicating the rest?
Is there a limit of size or amount of files?

Then I went to "library" and then "consolidate", and it moved all my library over to my external. I can verify that my songs are all there on my externalHowever, now, itunes won't play any songs of mine. I double click on the song in itunes and it just wont play. There's no error message, there's no exclamation point, it just won't play. Any idea what is goign on? Preferences still shows that my library is directing to the external

migrate my music to another computer, but I'm afraid of losing what I have checked and unchecked in "music" library. So let me explain a little more, not a created playlist or smart playlist. If you were to go through every single song you have and uncheck what you don't listen to this is the "master list" I'm referring to.

This morning I tried to play one of my albums and it told me it wasn't able to locate the files (on my external disk) so I located them manually and for some reason it has created a new iTunes folder in the root of my HDD (even though the iTunes prefs still pointed at the external disk) and moved the files in to that.
I deleted the album from the library and then imported the files from the new folder. It imported them fine and copied them to the exiting iTunes folder in the ext HDD but then immediately copied them back to the wrong iTunes folder. Then it told me it couldn't find them again!
I've now discovered 4 other albums that it's doing the same thing with and no matter what I do I can't get them to import, stay on the ext HDD and remain connected.
I've re-installed iTunes and restored my library file from before I upgraded to 10.1.1(4) but it's still doing the same thing.

Does the login keychain have anything to do with the iTunes authorization required to play iTMS purchased music? If so, how do I reset the keychain without losing it?
The problem is that every so often the login keychain pops up asking me to enter a password. I've changed it and the keychain did not so they are out of sync. The only solution I've found was to delete the keychain. In 10.4.11 there doesn't appear to be any other way to sync the login password with the keychain password. Furthermore as I do not remember my old dotmac password nor my iTunes Music Store password, and as I no longer have access to either the Music Store nor dotmac, I worry that reseting the Keychain would lose access to all the music I've purchased throughout the years, and that's a lot of money spent for me to lose it.
The problems these brilliant people created are just so stupid I shutter to think what else they're messing up. I realize it's my fault for having to reset the password (even though it's a system bug in Mac OS X), but how do I resolve this problem?

I have a Macbook with about 5,000 songs on it, all of which are burned from actual hard copies of CDs that I own. Rather than re-burning each CD to my new Windows computer, I would like to see if there's a way to transfer all these songs from Mac to PC using an external hard drive.Â
The real question is how can I format my external hard drive to be recognized on both a Macbook running Snow Leopard and a PC running Windows 7?

I have 2 macs with two completely independent iTunes databases. They are used for differnt purposes and contain different music. I really do not want to merge these two databases.
From time to time I need to selectively transfer some few songs from the one computer to the other one. Is there a clever way I can achieve this? I would like to transfer the files including the metadata.

I recently cleaned out my computer and reinstalled all of my applications, photos, videos, and music. Now, some of my songs are being cutoff before the song reaches the end. I suspect this is due to iTunes inaccurately placing gaps between my songs.

How come this feature has never been released? How many times have you been listening to music with friends through a stereo, or simply enjoying a good shuffle list, and all of a sudden you're struck with an urging to hear a different song. Problem is, you don't want to leave the one you're on, you only want to listen to it next. And even after you finish listening to it, you want to be able to resume your previous shuffle list. Seems common enough right?
Then why has Apple never released this feature? I understand the ability to make customizable playlists, but we're not talking about lots of songs. Just one single song. And it could be designed to only allow one song to be qued. Not too challenging I would think.
And it would be so easy to implement. Add a button next to the genius button on the bottom of iTunes with a big Q on it. Highlight the song you want, press that button, and BAM. Done. On an iPod touch/iPhone, just swipe over the song you want to que up (like in email), and a red button will pop up saying "que" and done. And on an iPod with a click wheel, maybe hold down the center button and the fast-foward button when you're highlighted over the song you want to que and done.
