I am running OSX 10.9.3 on a 3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 12GB RAM, and itunes 11.2.2 (3) 64 Bit. My itunes library is large (approx 1 TB) and contains mostly ripped CDs, vinyl and ripped DVDs and BluRays. I usually add media using the File/Add to Library command. This set up has been reliable for a couple of years at least.Â
At time of writing itunes will still happily add music files, but is no longer happy to add movie files. I get a message telling me that the disk which contains my itunes library (I use a 2TB external HD) cannot be written to or read from. Clearly this isn't true as I can write music files to it. Â
I tried disk repair in the disk utility and it tells me the drive is healthy. I thought maybe there is a maximum itunes library size. As a check I tried starting a completely new itunes library on a different external drive and the problem persists.Â
I have >500GB spare space on the drive containing my itunes library. All my drives are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so should not suffer any file size limitation.Â

I've got a problem with my MBP. It finally came back from repair centre today. My Harddrive was broken, so they put a new one inside. Everything worked OK, until I decided to install Snow Leopard, and after that put my superduper backup from my external HD to the MAC hd. I restarted the MAC while I kept holding down the "C" button, (snow leopard disk inside) I went to install OSx menu,-> Disk utility-> MAcintosh HD->last TAB (can't remember the name)-> and dragged the External HD in the first bar, and mac HD in the Second. Also I checked Remove Mac HD when copy the Backup to MAC HD. I pressed the button and the EST time was about 2 hours. After one hour my HD made some noise and gave me an error: Something with Failed to load or Failed to copy. After that it did removed my Macintosh HD drive. It's just Gone! I don't know what to do.. Can't install my mac it's completely useless right now..
Here are some pictures describing the situation:

I've been syncing my devices for years, but after I updated to iTunes 10.6 then attempted to sync my iPhone 4, iTunes aborts and does not complete the sync. I tried my iPad as well with exactly the same results. So, I expect that something has begun corrupted in iTunes and I tried to revert to the previous version of iTunes with Time machine, but the Mac reported that I cannot remove iTunes. It could be a library that is corrupt or a cache of some sort, but I can't tell.Â

I got wiped out by a lightning strike to my cable, and had to re-install Leopard. The first three attempts failed. After about five minutes into the installation, I would get a pop up saying INSTALLATION FAILED, COULD NOT COPY. I took the disc out and noticed there were some small dirty, greasy looking spots that had somehow gotten onto it. It might have been dirty fingerprints, I dunno. So, if this happens to you, clean the install disc first, before looking for other troubles.

I have a 298.1 GB external Western Digital hard drive connected to my iMac by a USB 2.0 cable. It is formatted in NTFS-3G so I can use it with both my PC and Mac. Yesterday in Disk Utility I created a 50GB 256-bit encrypted DMG and told Disk Utility to save it on a folder in my external drive. It got to about 20GB and then my house's power went out. A few hours later when the power came back on, I turned on my computer, and the available space on my external hard drive went down from about 100GB to 68.21GB.
The first thing I thought was that the DMG transfer ended prematurely so I should just find and delete the incomplete DMG from the hard drive. So I went to the folder I saved it in and it was not there. I checked all the folders and I couldn't find any DMG in there. Then I went to the root of the external drive and used Get Info to find the space each folder took up. It adds up to 194.12 GB. So I subtracted 194.12 from 298.1 and got 103.98. If I'm supposed to have 103.98 GB, why do I only have 68.21 GB available? I double and triple checked the size of everything on the disk and I still should have about 30GB more than I do. The 30GB just disappeared.

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.
The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.
If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.
I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

My hard and back up disk both failed on the same day, strange but the kids were on the computer and things happen.Running Mac OS 10.6 I paid $800 to "super geeks" to recover the pics > 30,000 (many duplicates)I will receive a 500 gig external drive from them today via Fed Ex with the pics recovered . My plan is to move them to my iMac (had a new HD put in) but I do not want to transfer 30,000 pics priorto running duplicate annihilator & thumbnail annihilator on the new external drive. Is there an easy way to do this > looking for help? Can I run the programs on the recovered drive I will receive today prior to my transferring? Or is there a more efficient way of doing this.

We recently purchased a MacBook Air for a family member. She was using an old MacBook with Snow Leopard. Tried Migration Assistant, but after running overnight, the process hung with "less than a minute remaining." After waiting several hours, we decided to shut down both computers and start over. MacBook Air started up fine, and we were able to migrate from a Time Machine backup. No problems there. The old MacBook was greatly affected. The computer will not start up. The grey screen with the progress bar shows up on boot, but never moves beyond the spinning process circle. I tried booting from the OS install disk to use disk utility to repair it... but the machine seems to not accept the DVD and ejects it.Â
The only mode that I can boot into is single-user mode. I have tried using fsck to repair the disk, but even after many repeated attempts, it exits with "The volume could not be repaired." I think that this is an issue with the B-tree, which must have been damaged during the improper shut down during the migration. Are there any other options for recovering the computer? Again, this will not boot from the install disk, and the only mode that I can seem to access is single-user mode.Â

I have recently purchased an iMac (21.5" - 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - 4 GB 1067 MHz RAM - 1 TB harddrive) with OS X 10.6.2 installed. I have to say that after over 20 years with MicroSoft I am enjoying the stability and quality of the MAC. Anyway, as part of my education in the care and feeding of a MAC I ran the TechTool app yesterday. I had no indication that anything was wrong with the computer - but, I would like to become familiar with the various utilities for the care of the machine "before" a problem occurs. As the app ran I was pleased to see that all the tests passed (Processor, RAM, Video RAM, etc.). However the computer failed the last test: Volume Structure.
Here are the directions I was given at the end of the test: Volume Structure Failed
TechTool Deluxe can scan volumes for problems related to the numerous structures that are necessary for the volumes to operate correctly. If problems are found, TechTool Deluxe can attempt to repair the damage to help reduce the chance of future problems. If TechTool Deluxe has discovered problems with the structure of a volume, allow the program to repair the problem. Quite often these issues are minor, but sometimes they can be indicative of a more serious problem. If the problem persists, consider backing up the device, reformatting the media, replacing the data, and then testing again.
I was also instructed to access the Apple site and download the most recent version of TechTool Deluxe that can perform repairs. I downloaded the software and followed the instructions to open the file in the Disk Utility app and burn a CD. Following the directions I then booted up on the CD by restarting the computer while holding the "C" key. The computer booted up on the CD and loaded TechTool Deluxe. I ran the same tests as above and once again the Volume Structure failed. When I clicked on repair it seemed as though the program was trying to fix the problem - then it abruptly stopped and stated that the Volume Structure could not be repaired.
I removed the TechTool CD, rebooted the computer, installed the TechTool Deluxe that I downloaded from Apple, and ran the Disk Utility. When I tried to "Verify" the disk this is what appeared: Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD". This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk. Following these instructions I rebooted the computer using the Mac OS X installation disk - and the only option I found was for an installation of the OS.

I purchased a 32gb usb flash drive from ebay. I transferred some music on there, it crashed half way through transferring.
When I restarted and plugged it in, it didn't appear on the desktop. I went into Disk Utility and tried to erase it, I get the following error:
Disk Erase failed with the error:
Input/output error
So I then tried the following in Terminal:
diskutil eraseDisk HFS+ newdisk disk2
But got the following message:
Partitioning encountered error Input/output error (5) on disk disk2 NO NAME

I'm booted on a MacBook Pro from an external drive, and I want to erase the drive inside the MacBook using Disk Utility from the external. For some reason or another, it won't let me do this. When I click on the Erase tab (whether clicked on the disk itself or the volume "Macintosh HD") and try to erase it, it returns with the error:
Disk Erase failed
Disk Erase failed with the error: Could not unmount disk.
When I try to install an image onto the drive, I get a similar error, except it says "Operation not permitted." When I tried it while booted with an OS X DVD, it worked fine. As far as I know, I should be able to do this while booted from the external HD.

I partitioned my 320GB hard drive into 2 sections, 212GB and 108GB, I removed my 108GB partition with Disk Utility, and tried to only have one partition for my entire hard drive, but the "disk verification" fails! 108GB of my hard drive is inaccessible (it works to make a second partition over the 108GB, but I want a single partition over everything for installing windows with BootCamp) what can I do? would backing up everything and wiping my hard drive and reinstalling everything work?

I have a 2011 Mac Mini. I try to connect to another Mac via Remote Disk. The other computer shows up and the disk appears in the window. However, when I select the disk, I get a message telling me that the operation failed because the original could not be found. Apple Troubleshooting tells me that it has something to do with the firewall. So I turned off the firewall, but I still get the same message. Both computers are running 10.7.3.

I'm trying to format a new external hard drive and it is not working. It is a Seagate 1TB Expansion drive. The box only says PC and Windows, but the guy said 'it should work on a mac too, as long as you format it on a mac', and other people on the internets say it should be fine also e.g. here.
So, when I go into Disk Utilities > Erase tab > change Volume Format to Mac OSX Extended > click erase, it gets about 2% in and then an error window pops up which says "Disk Erase failed. Disk Erase failed with the error: File system formatter failed."

I'm using a 2GHz PowerPC G5, OS X 10.4.11, with 1 GB on one dimm. I cannot open ANY .dmg files. I have tried clicking the image, and also on a clean download used "open with" each time I received the following message The following disk image failed to mount
Reason: Device not configured
I have followed the instructions in this thread:- Disk image failed to mount: Device not configured.
Firstly Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Click on "Macintosh HD" in the left column and then press the "Repair Disk Permissions" button.
Delete the file called /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
Delete the folder called /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/
Restart
That made no difference. I then tried bobw's advice here Panther - Disk Image "mounting Failed" Panther - Disk Image "mounting Failed". That made no difference. I have since gone on to justanswer.com and the advice I received was to do an archive and install and then a full combo update.
