ITunes :: 10.6.3 Memory Leak - Filling Up All Disk Partition
Jul 1, 2012
Anyone else having issues with iTunes 10.6.3 running on OSX 10.7.4 leaking memory dry and then filling up ALL your disk partition? I do - once a week now. I have a small boot SSD, but once iTunes fills up the memory it appears to be creating a 30+ GB swap on the boot drive and just kills my machine. I watched the apps closely this week, and iTunes had built itself a nice little slice of 4.5+GB of memory. I have 12GB of memory. Machine was starting to lock up right before my eyes. Force quitting iTunes saved the day. What in the world? I do connect my Apple TV to my library.

I bought my Macbook Pro 17", Intel 3.06 GHz, 4 GB RAM a few days ago. However, I seem to keep experiencing this System memory issue. Right after I start the Mac OS, I got around 3 GB of System Memory free (which is still a bit weird, is the Mac OS by itself requiring a whole GB of RAM?), but the more I use my system, the less RAM becomes available. This is normal, but I would expect the memory to return once the applications are closed.
However, after working with different applications, especially vmware-fusion, and Logic Pro, although I close the applications, only very little System Memory returns. I have attached a screen shot of the system, including the Activity Monitor window. As you can see, with only Safari and Finder opened, I only got less than 700 MB of memory free, out of the 4 GB I have. I believe this might be what is called a "memory leak". Is there any way to sort it out, without having to reboot my system each time I need memory? Here's the screenshot: [URL]

I have an issue with my MBP. I have 4GB ram, and recently, AddressBookSync think it should just fill up that entire memory with ... nothing, I guess! I used the search function here, as well as on google, and those few instances I could find were either not answered, too old or relevant to other application problems.
This is a screenshot from Activity Monitor. I can kill it, but at next sync, it will just start over. As it fills the memory, most other functions slowly come to a halt, or at least, runs very slowly - even copying files, or just hovering the mouse over the dock, to reveal the icons!
I did a resync of Mobile Me as suggested elsewhere, but it did not solve it.
If you want to find out for yourself if you have a similar problem, I can recommend the widget iStat Pro. From that, you can see current memory and CPU loads (and much more also), and launch Activity Monitor from there. You can also launch Activity Monitor directly from Spotlight for instance.

Alright so I bought a copy of Aperture 3 and just upgraded from Aperture 2 once I installed it, it had to convert my older library into Aperture 3 format it said it would take overnight so I came back in the morning to see a massage saying something like " your startup disk is full please close other applications for more memory " which was really strange because my Aperture library is not even on my start disk and I had 60gb's left on my startup when I went to bed. not to mention the computer was the slowest I had ever seen it. could this be because it ran out of ram and started using the startup as virtual memory? and if so why did it use 60gb/s of storage and still not have enough? this is a huge problem apple needs to fix it seems to do this as soon as I start up Aperture every time.

I'm curious if anyone has experienced a memory leak in Mail?
I leave it open all the time so it will check my e-mail constantly over my IMAP accounts. My computer was last restarted--so so was mail, earlier in the day. I opened up activity monitor and saw it hogging an insane 300 mb of RAM. After I closed the program and restarted it, it is down to using a much more reasonable 32 mb.

I've kept my Mac on for days in order to test out these memory leaks that Safari, iTunes, etc supposedly have.
Safari is now using 1.01 GB of memory. And that's not from having 100 windows open or anything. I usulaly have a few windows open with a few tabs each most of the time. But it's just the size to which Safari has grown. It started out much less. Under 100mb I think.
iTunes is up to 280mb from 50mb and I believe it was even higher earlier in the day somewhere in the 330mb range.
I have 4 gigs of RAm on my aluminum iMac, but now I have only 58mb of free memory left!!!
When memory runs out what will be the result? Is Safari just using a gig of memory because it can??? Will this slowdown my system? Or will Safari and/or iTunes give up memory starting with the oldest data first? Am I reinventing the wheel here? What will this test or observation prove?
Updates to follow.

I upgraded my system to Safari 5 from the file. I was not connected to the Internet at this point but decided to check the new browser, and was surprised to see how fast Safari occupied all available memory. The system was very irresponsive. Closing Safari solved the problem. This problem can easily be repeated. Can somebody confirm this? I have SL on MBP.

I have a brand new iMac, that often displays an error stating the mac is out of memory. The mac has 16GB of memory and usually the only software used is Office products and Safari. I noticed that the machine would run out of memory when the mac is doing its index. I can usully see this happening in the spotlight. Below is a screen shot of the activity monitor.Â

My dad has a new 27" Core i5 iMac. When he plays a very long slideshow, iPhoto consistently crashes around the 8-minute mark. Sometimes he gets an error message saying "iPhoto unexpectedly quit" and sometimes the slides just quit coming up, even though the music keeps playing.
It doesn't matter from which event the slides come, although it seems to happen on his pics only and not on the pre-installed pics from Apple.
One last data point, this never happens, even when viewing the same slideshow, on his 13" MacBook Pro, which he bought at the same time.
It seems to me like a memory leak, or, less likely, some kind of GPU overheating issue. He's tried rebuilding his photo library, which changed nothing.

Well not so much a leak but since upgrading to Snow Leopard I've noticed that over time, a big chunk of my RAM is being siphoned off into a process called OSMServer. Does anyone know what it does and why? And more importantly how to stop it doing it? It's currently using over 1GB of my 4GB RAM and making the machine run like treacle.
The only way to clear it seems to be a full shut down and restart. Which is fine for a while until it fires back up and starts gobbling RAM again.

I'm getting messages stating "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory." I've determined that my system memory is rapidly reducing after the MacBook Air is left on with only the Activity Monitor and Terminal open.
MacBook Air Stats:
11-Inch, Mid 2011
Processor: 1.8 Ghz Intel Core i7
Memory: 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384MB
Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3
My SSD drive space is rapidly reduced after the "free memory" is almost completed used - the MacBook then starts using the SSD drive as virtual memory and almost uses that space (I have a 250GB drive with 60GB available when I start the mac).Everything works great for the first 5-10 minutes, then I see the "free memory" decrese until it's down to about 30MB or so and then the SWAP used increases until my hard drive is almost totally out of space and gives me the error above. During this time the MacBook Airs little fan turns on.I can only use my Mac for about 30 minutes or so until I have to restart due to the HD being filled up by the virtual memory SWAP. The Mac is also very slow during this time as you can imagine.

I have waited quite some time until a first update to Yosemite was available.
I have installed Yosemite on both my IMAC and my MBP.Â
Since then, both computers behave similarly.
Even when no actions are performed, the memory fills up hour after hour, this takes a few hours.
Eventually the memory is so full that any operation takes 10 mn to complete, and it becomes impossible to perform any work.
In practice it is best to restart the computers every 4 hours.Â
The problem tasks are:
- Folder Actions Dispatcher
- and to a lower extend "kernel_task".Â

I have a year old MacBook Pro with an Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT card.
I recently bought Unity but it turns out the Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT graphics card isn't fully supported because of a memory leak which is a problem with the drivers.
Unity Support have told me to update my drivers. I understood Mac drivers were always built in to the OS and no drivers were available from Nvidea but I see they now have one Mac driver for another card.
What is the actual state of affairs with this graphics card does anyone know? There have been a lot of reports of faulty ones and now this.
This is a just about year old top of the range MacBook Pro and it doesn't support graphics??

I have a 500G WD external HD, and I used Disk Utility to securely (35-pass) erase it. Now the I cannot do anything to the drive. Cannot erase or partition it. When I try disk utility says the task has "failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldnt be completed. Cannot allocate memory" Before the drive would show on the desktop as, WD 5000BEV External Media, when I plugged it in. Now it has a message saying that "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Then it gives me three options which are... Initialize, Ignore, Eject. When I click Initialize I am redirected to Disk Utility. Also now in disk utility it says that it is a 2.2 TB WD Media opposed to WD 5000BEV External Media. How does it go from a 500g to a 2.2t It is unformatted and I do not know how to reformat it back to the it was.

The free space on my MacBook is disappearing fast but I don't know why. I am hoping someone can tell me where to start solving this problem. It must be invisible files but what can I do about it? This started after I restored from a Time Machine backup to a new hard disk after the hard disk failed (another story). The Time Machine backup was about a week old (isn't it always the case?) so I don't think it is likely that I could have restored anything that might have had anything to do with the hard disk failure. Everything seemed to be working fine, having spent hours resorting emails and trying to reconstruct files I had lost from the week I didn't back up. During that week I had bought an iPhone. When I connected it to the restored computer it deleted all the apps I had installed. Not a big problem, as I was able to track them down from an iTunes receipt and reinstall them. I then attached my iPod and the computer had to replace all the files with new ones. As there were a lot of songs and photos I left it to do this and went to bed. Next day the iPod now had newly replaced files and seems fine. But there is a warning that the startup disk is full. No new files had been put on the computer, which had about 9.5 Gb free space. I deleted some files so I could do some things with the computer to find out what was happening. The space thus freed soon disappeared. I then deleted Parallels Desktop so that I could free up more space. I now had 29.67 Gb free space. I tried searching for large files but nothing suspicious seems to detectable. By the end of the day the free space had gone down to 24.39 Gb. It now stands at 23.22.

My Mail app is leaking memory at the rate of about 0.8Mb per second. If I leave it running it hogs all my RAM, starts using gigabytes of virtual RAM, slows my system to a crawl and then crashes. I have to open the app to check my mail, and then close it again - which is really irritating. It started after a recent Safari update.
I have SpamSieve on my machine, but the leak still happens when it's disabled. Similarly, I have a MobileMe email account - but it stil leaks when I disable this account. I'm running a MacBook 3.1

First some background info. I recently purchased a 1TB hard drive for my 13" MBP, and I am about to do a clean install of OSX 10.6 and Win7 64bit on separate partitions.
And I want to setup the partitions before I install using Disk Utility. The reason for this is because I'm under the assumption that when creating a NTFS partition its better for the disk to be blank so it can put the MFT(Master file table) and MFT Mirror wherever it wants instead of some random spot on the disk (that way disk writes will be faster). The MFT thing was true when converting a FAT32 disk to NTFS. Nativity formatted NTFS disks were always faster then ones converted from FAT32, because the MFT was spread out instead of at the start of the disk.
I'm worried that installing OSX and then using the bootcamp utility will cause the MFT on my NTFS partition to end up in a un-optimal place and disk Reads/Writes will be slower.
Ok, so here's my questions.
1.) Should I be using a GUID Partition Table or Master Boot Record(Remember OSX 10.6 and Win7)?
2.) Should I use Disk Utility to Create a the OSX partition and then leave the second partition as Free Space? / Or should I use a third party utility and make the OSX partition and the NTFS partition at the same time?
3.) If I do create the partitions Manualy, will bootcamp still work correctly?
4.) Should I Use Journaled or Case-Sensitive Journaled on my OSX partition?
I know all of the questions were stupid, but there isn't any info on the web about it.

Got my first MacBook Pro about 2 months ago and I have been enjoying it to full effect, installing programs such as logic studio and photoshop cs5 on it. Recently, however, I decided that I would like to access some of my windows based programs when I am on the road and don't have my desktop pc with me. So I bought a fresh copy of 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate and sat at my macbook, put the disc in and then loaded up Boot Camp. I went through the menu options, decided that I wanted a 50GB partition, leaving my Mac OS drive at 182 GB with 83GB to spare. However, when I started partitioning, after about a minute it stopped and this error message appeared: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.".
I tried cleaning all my temporary files and deleting some files in my downloads that were quite large and I restarted my machine. The problem persisted. Is there a solution to this problem that does not involve doing all this rubbish with a fresh install of Mac OS? I don't have any method of backup apart from a couple of 4GB flash drives..

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!Â
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.Â
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state!  Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)

I have run the Disk Utility verify function against my system partition. It tells me there are minor issues that need fixing up and I should run the repair disk function, by booting using Command-R and using the Disk Utility to repair the drive.Problem is, when I boot using Command-R and select Disk Utility the partition is shown greyed out and the Verify and Repair options do not work.I think this could be because the partition is encrypted. The utility does not offer me the chance to unlock the partition with my passphrase. How can I repair the filesystem errors on this partition?

My new 2010 hexacore Mac will have 24G memory, an OWC Extreme Pro 120G SSD (positioned in the lower optical bay) and four 2TB WD RE4 drives. I'll use my old Synology 209 NAS (two 1TB WD Green Raid 1 drives) for TM backups over 1000Mbps Ethernet. Yes, I'll need to upgrade to a larger NAS very soon. This will be my first Mac Pro (have MBPs and iMac) and will be used for web design and development (mostly Adobe CS5 products).
The SSD will be used for boot and application files. I plan to use Disk Utility to create a 1+0 Raid array for data files. For a Scratch disk, should I:
1) create a partition on the 1+0 Raid Array for Scratch
2) partition a chunk of the SSD for Scratch
3) attach a spare external 2.5" WD drive via Firewire 800 for Scratch
Based on my reading, it seems that option 1 makes the most sense but I'm not entirely sure if you can partition a 1+0 array with Disk Utility. I'm pretty sure option 3 is quite silly but wanted to toss out the idea. Lastly, are there any generic recommendations on scratch volume sizing?
