My macbook is quickly filling up, and I cannot locate where all my gb's have gone. When I add up documents, pictures, music and movies, it all adds to 65 gb, while my hard-disk drive is 120 gb - and it only had 250 mbs free space. What can I do?

All week I have been getting a message saying my disk is almost full and to make space. I noticed that my 200gb hdd had only 92mb of available space so I decided to delete 6GB worth of stuff I didn't need that was in my download section.
The following day, I got another message saying my disk was almost full and again it showed less that 100mb available.. again I went in and deleted a bunch of stuff giving myself several GBs of wiggle room.
Two more days passed bringing me to this morning and again my HD shows less than 100MB available and this message just popped up again.
How do I clear space on my startup disk and hard drive?

The free space on my MacBook is disappearing fast but I don't know why. I am hoping someone can tell me where to start solving this problem. It must be invisible files but what can I do about it? This started after I restored from a Time Machine backup to a new hard disk after the hard disk failed (another story). The Time Machine backup was about a week old (isn't it always the case?) so I don't think it is likely that I could have restored anything that might have had anything to do with the hard disk failure. Everything seemed to be working fine, having spent hours resorting emails and trying to reconstruct files I had lost from the week I didn't back up. During that week I had bought an iPhone. When I connected it to the restored computer it deleted all the apps I had installed. Not a big problem, as I was able to track them down from an iTunes receipt and reinstall them. I then attached my iPod and the computer had to replace all the files with new ones. As there were a lot of songs and photos I left it to do this and went to bed. Next day the iPod now had newly replaced files and seems fine. But there is a warning that the startup disk is full. No new files had been put on the computer, which had about 9.5 Gb free space. I deleted some files so I could do some things with the computer to find out what was happening. The space thus freed soon disappeared. I then deleted Parallels Desktop so that I could free up more space. I now had 29.67 Gb free space. I tried searching for large files but nothing suspicious seems to detectable. By the end of the day the free space had gone down to 24.39 Gb. It now stands at 23.22.
View 2 Replies View Relatedwhenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back
I have a 500GB Time Capsule, and very slowly my drive is filling up, and that's only with one Mac (I think there's about 25GB left - and no other stuff is on it except for the TM backup). I was wondering if there was a way to add an external drive into the Time Capsule via USB and extend the overall capacity, as I only seem to be able to choose it as a separate backup location. Obviously I don't want to have to buy a bigger USB HD when I'm running low on space. Also, I'm gonna be getting an iMac (As soon as Apple decides to announce new ones!)
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor a long time my mac had around 10 GB of space left. Then, two nights ago, I got a notice that said my startup disk was full. I deleted some stuff, a bunch of movies that I didn't know existed, and I had 30 GB of space yesterday. But now, this morning, there is only 10 MB of space left! I think it may have something to do with a file called hfamily1.dmg, which took up 10 GB of space and I couldn't delete it, but I just left it there. But even that wouldn't take up all that room! I've always been connected to the internet, and I've always had an external drive plugged in. I'm running DiskInventoryX right now, but if this problem keeps happening.

And I have only had the laptop for less than 2 years now, Is this normal? Is there a way to erase items so I have alot more free space? I also have an portable external hard 320 gb I use to back up my hard drive. Will this save my music and important items so I can erase items (music, etc.) off of hard drive? then when i need those items just plug the portable hard drive in? I really need my music for I am a DJ.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity. 350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie. I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.
After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash. I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac.
I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).
Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else? How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?
Disk Utility Crashed whilst creating a Partition, and I now have ~100GB missing, which was the amount I had allocated to the new partition.
The new partition didn't get created, and I now have 100GB missing from the Hard drive. I have a 1TB hard drive, and when I go to Disk Utility, it says: Capacity : 999.35 GB (999,345,127,424 Bytes)Available : 586.1 GB (586,103,844,864 Bytes)Used : 310.52 GB (310,524,317,696 Bytes)
Which adds up to about ~900GB.
I tried Repairing Disk in Disk Utility, booting into Recovery Mode and Repairing Disk there, but neither made a difference.

OK, kinda a long story. Pardon the ranting, but if feels like everything is going wrong and I'm getting pretty tired of it.
I was going along nicely with my Mac. Then I had a time-sensitive iMovie project that was going totallly screwy. I ended up buying Lion hoping that would fix the problem. It didn't spent several more hours trolling forums and figured out it was a weird problem with the software.
So... then I was stuck with Lion. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Rosetta Stone, etc. don't work on it. Not cool. Would have been nice if I was warned before doing this. So, I figured I'd go back in my Time Machine backup. However, I was really busy and didn't get to it until a few weeks later. I'd never actually used Time Machine, but when I went into it I was astonished to find that it backed up on the hour, filling up the external hard drive so it only kept backups for a few weeks. And of course, it was too late to backup to my old OS. So not cool. Who in the world needs an hourly backup??? I'd much prefer a weekly backup a little further back. That's just absurd.
So, anyway, I had the old Time Machine backup. I figured if I messed up, I could always restore to the recent Lion backup. So, I restored to Snow Leopard from the disk, wiping the hard drive. Then, I tried to go in and get my files off of the external hard drive/Time Machine backup. It didn't recognize I even had an external hard drive plugged in.
So... I decided to go back to Lion, maybe I needed to be in Lion to access the Lion backup. Spent hours putting Lion back on. And... still doesn't even recognize that there's an external hard drive plugged in. What gives?
I've been trying to think of what all could be the problem here. Did I just think I was backing up to the external hard drive this whole time, when really I was backing up to the computer? No, because it would send me reminders when the external hard drive wasn't plugged in. Is the cord or something broken to the external hard drive? I suppose it's possible, but just a few hours before I saw the Time Machine backups... And there is power to it.
I only have like 8 gb left on my macbook's hard drive. Are there any programs I can run that will defrag/free up space? How much does Apple Store typically charge to upgrade a hard drive? How easy is it to do myself?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe hard drive on my iMac is filling to capacity at an extremely accelerated rate. In order to have functionality, I had to delete some unnecessary files and used WhatSize to try and determine the culprit. When backing up my hard drive yesterday, Mail was showing to be 91G.The hard drive filled up again a few minutes later so I copied iTunes to an external drive for safe keeping freeing up 85G.
By this morning that was gone as well so I copied contents of Pictures over to external hard drive freeing up 189G. Mail is now up to 244G on my 500G hard drive. I rebooted at that point to see if that would stop the growth and it has currently, but it may start again. WhatSize says there are no duplicates. I am receiving and sending the same amount of mail that I usually do on a daily basis, so that is not the problem.

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used? Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right? So where's the missing ~100GB? That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.

I tried to run a software update this morning and apparently I don't have enough space for [another] iTunes update. How do I find out what is taking up all the space on my computer so I can move files to an external hard drive? Is there another solution other than using an external hard drive?

I'm running out of hard disk space on my MacBook pro running OS X Lion. I have a 500 GB hard drive and at the moment the finder says I only have 16 GB available. Checking the total of all my files with the finder as well as Apps such as WhatSize and Disk Inventory X only adds up to aproximately 420 GB of files. Therefore I should have about 80 GB free so I am missing 64 GB of hard disk space.
The problem is not the local backup storage as I have had this problem before and have turned off local backups. I have also run disk utility and shut down and re-started. The available disk space is not decreasing with time either like other people have experienced, its fixed at the current availabilty of 16 GB free, and adjust normally as I add and remove files. So there really is a hidden file or something that is using around 64 GB of space.
I noted that a previous post with a similar problem said that DiskTools pro had fixed the problem. However as this application is reltively expensive and there is no explanation of how it soved the problem I don't want to pay for it without some guarantee of results.

OK these are fairly basic questions i think. Firstly I was considering upgrading the 2GB RAM to 4GB on my macbook, but firstly wanted someone to explain what activity monitor is telling me about my memory. There is Free, wired, active, inactive and used. I can work out what free and used mean lol, but what do the other 3 mean. Right now it says I have 9.8MB free lol, so im guessing i am in desperate need of an upgrade, or is that normal?
Secondly if i am going to upgrade, can someone give me some advice on which are the best brands to get for RAM? is it simple enough to install yourself or should i take it to a apple store?
OK last think was about my hard disk space. If I put my macbook to sleep witout shutting down i notice my hard disk space decreases (though it appears to recover it when i do restart it). I havent shut it down since sunday, and its gone down about 4GB!? is that normal?
My Harddisk space on Mac book pro has run out. When I checked the system info, I can see 80GB are "other", for which I have no idea what they are. Can anyone tell me how to find them & delete to free up more space?

Been looking through forum to find out how to permanently delete the trash but is not facilitating much. Also read through forum that back up file and log file also can take up lots of space. I has set up an external hard disk for back up but after 3 months I am not able to back up as my external hard disk also running out of space. As of last error back up I been getting error that I need to back up 80+GB file which my external hard disk does not have efficient space.

I have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:
Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?
I have a Macbook PRO late 2011 running OS X Mavericks.
Shortly after getting my mac notebook I allowed an offspring to use it, it "died" and I had to re-install the OS from disk. After this, I have hardly any of my 80GB left (about 2MB currently!). I have nothing else on (I have not put anything on other than the odd photo). Have I doubled up the OS? If so how do I remove the first one! Also (you'd think I would learn) lent it to off spring to watch DVD whilst in France on holiday - battery now does not charge whatsosever! Has the voltage difference when using mains cable abroad just fried the battery?

My Mac (MBP 2GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 100GB HD (partition 60GB OSX 30GB Windows)) has been cleaned up a few times and I no longer store music, photo, video or docs (some) on my startup disk. I can probably understand about 15GB being taken up but I cannot work out where the other 30GB+ have gone (works out as 11gb apps, 3gb doc folder and desktop). I am using Disk Inventory X but it is very muddled and all over the place not giving me a clear indication.
I have worked out that Application Support is taking up 5.5GB and Printers is taking up 3.5GB. I have deleted Garageband and all loops but still loads taken up. Want to install CS4 without deleting CS3 so can make sure it works before I delete? So my questions are.......
What methods are out there for me to troubleshoot where the space is being taken up?

Running Snow Leopard on a Late 2007 MacBook, and I booted it up today to see that I had 15 GB left (normal). 4 hours later, I get an alert that I'm running low on Hard Disk space, so I open a new Finder window to see how much space I have. It tells me 10 MB. After 5 minutes, this dropped down to 0 KB, and all of my applications opened "paused", and I had to force quit them. I don't have 0 KB left, I have 15 GB, but Finder isn't telling me that.

It's obvious I need a new one, or to clear out more. I'm thinking both.I just got the free version of CleanMyMac, is that a good program to clear my HD out with?And, if I only want a drive that's 200GB-300GB, how much will a reliable one run me? I've seen 1TB drives for ?70, but I'm not sure if they're the right size for the MB.
