ITunes :: 10.5.3 Crashed OSX Like Dozens Of Others
Feb 6, 2012
I updated to iTunes 10.5.3 I think a few days ago (I don't really keep track of when or what I update). Anyways, today. iTunes has refused to work correctly. Whenever I play my music and go to a different program, and come back a few minutes later to chance the song. The instant I click on it my whole computer freezes. It goes like 0.5 frames per minute. so I can eventually close iTunes via force quit menu. and after that, my system is full speed again. I mean really. I would greatly like to listen to my music I have spent years collecting, yet it just crashes on startup. one thing is I have my iTunes library on on external hard drive so I can access it from my MBP and Mac Pro. It works perfectly fine on my laptop.

For the last few days I've been buried under an avalanche of bounced undeliverable emails I never sent.
Question:Could I have some sort of virus,or has someone "spoofed"my address?
How does spoofing work and is there a way around it short of changing my address?

So a while ago a bunch of new icons appeared in my launchpad(four pages worth). I clicked on a few and they didn't do anything, but am hesitant to mess around too much as I don't want to mess up my system. I've tried to find a way to hide them, but have come up short.

I just noticed them today. You can't feel them unless you run a bare nail across them. They're along the black plastic portion of the 15" Macbook pro (late 2008 model) at the base of the screen. The computer is less than a year old and I rarely ever actually move the notebook. It spends most of its time on a stand at a desk in my office. Other than that it goes out once ever few weeks to talk to clients.
I don't know what could've caused the cracks. I'm thinking it could be heat related. I just looked into it today and noticed that my cpu was sitting around 200F. I installed a FanControl which has help pretty significantly, but it doesn't seem to ever go away.
Since I'm sure that the cracks are not caused by misuse, it leads me to believe it might be something wrong with the computer. The smooth operation of this machine is crucial so if there's something wrong, I'd like to try and catch it early.

I recently opened up iTunes to update some of my podcasts. Since my MacBook can keep a charge for about 1 minute (I'm not kidding), it shut down while new podcasts were downloading since I forgot to plug in the charger. No big deal, I think. This has happened to be before. Except when I try to open up iTunes after turning the computer on again, I'm told that something happened to my library, and some file was renamed itunes library(damaged).itl.
Huge problem: there is absolutely no damaged itunes library anywhere on my computer. I'm missing about 2k songs, all of my audiobooks, and all of my podcast subscriptions. Where in the hell could the damaged library have gone? I've read that simply renaming that one and reimporting it brings everything back to normal, but I have no damaged file to do this with. Where does it typically go when something like this happens?

my ehd crashed (the one that I was using for my Itunes library) fortunately, I did a CCC to a separate EHD last summer so I have most of the music. I know how to do CCC and I know how to MOVE my itunes folder and consolidate. But now, what I want to do is COPY my itunes library from my current bootable EHD (from the CCC) and move it back to my main HD. But I do not want to "move the library" and consolidate. I want to keep a back up on the EHD in case this happens again...

I was uploading some video from my camera to iphoto when my computer crashed. I turn it back on and everything I had in itunes Apps, music, movies, etc. is now gone (over 120 movies and 15,000 songs and 300 playlists) the files are still on my computer thankfully but what is the fastest and easiest way to get that stuff back into itunes? Also where are my app files they are not in the "mobile applications" folder in my itunes file folders? I have everything backed up on time machine but this really pisses me off anyone know where I can start?

Had everything conolsodated on an external drive which crashed. I have it stored on another system so I can easily get a new drive and put it on there. My questions are: I have around 200gbs of music, the extensions or whatnot are on the iMac drive, but the bulk of the music itself was on the crashed drive. I'd like to clean up the huge selection of songs when I copy to the new drive. So say I copy half of it to the new drive...obviously all the extra extensions and whatnot will still be on the iTunes on iMac.
Is there an easy way around this, meaning to get all the extra/old itunes extensions out of iTunes without wiping iTunes completely? Or will I have to manually delete all unwanted extensions and so forth? Also, maybe 100 sings were purchased through the iTunes Store (the rest was from years of CD collecting), those were on the crashed drive as well. I think I can, but want to double check...am I able to redownloaded those directly from the iTunes store? All software and such are up to date running Snow Leopard.

I've been reading this site for a couple of years, this is my first time typing.
Computer crashed, nothing is accessable, at the advice of my nearest mac dealer, I did an erase and restore with my system disks, but now itunes says "all the music for my account has already been downloaded."
How can I recover this?

My hard drive crashed and could not be recovered without spending about $1500. (according to the guys at the local Apple certified store) We had quite a bit of music on it but not enough to justify spending that kind of money. Is there a record of the music we purchased and some way to re-download that music to our new hard drive without re-buying all of it?

I had a fairly extensive music collection and recently i had to get a new hard drive. I didn't think it would be a big deal because i had always updated itunes Match. But iTunes match isn't showing me my library to download my music again.
Did i completely misunderstand iTunes Match? Do i have to start over?
All the music properly downloads on my iphone but not my mac.

While trying to restart after downloading an iTunes update, my computer won't go past the grey screen with the apple and loading bar. When I hit command+s it says my system bootstrapper crashed. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions and it still won't load.

I used a retail OS X 10.5 DVD to "erase and install" OS X on my PPC G4. It had been running OS X 10.5 without problems before but I wanted to erase everything on it. (In fact, I believe I upgraded it 10.5 with the same DVD). However, the mac crashed about 80% of the way through the process. It displays an alternating sad mac and question mark when I boot it up. I am occasionally able to boot it up from the CD but there is always a kernel panic before I can click the install button. What should I do?

ok so i suppose the inevitable had to happen. and so my mac OS X crashed badly within a few days of my getting this new MBP!
i had a short word document open in 1 workspace some firefox tabs in another, and was checking out the movies in my ext HDD (formatted with NTFS).and suddenly i start seeing this multi colored round icon which i guess is the cousin of the windows hourglass. after trying unsuccessfully to force quit, i was forced to hut down using the boot up button. yes, the same procedure that wreaks havoc on the HDD.
- so my questions are - what to do if even force quit doesn't work ? its surprising that it didn't in this case, as i have used ubuntu for almost 3 years and never had the OS crash on me! of course there were a few application crashes but the force quit always worked. and there was the keyboard shortcut - Ctrl+Alt+Del.
- also what is the norm with macs in this regard ? do they crash often and for the flimsiest of reasons as in my case ?
- probably i am not aware of the Mac OS equivalent for the Ctrl+Alt+Del function that almost always works in ubuntu. so is there some key combination that is guaranteed to work in the even that even force quit does not?

I have my 17" MBP besides me when it pronated me to restart after a software update. I am working in my other mac pro. Then I see the MBP with the blue screen for a while with no sign of activity. I press the power button, goes black and that is it. It won't want to start up again. The hard drive tries to read or something inside moves just once and that is it. Is not the hard drive broken, there is not reason and is not the sound of a broken drive, it sounds like the optical drive too. But the thing is that there is not activity, no sound of any sort. I disconnected the battery, unplugged the machine, power up, reconnect the battery and power and nothing. Is dead. The power light is on. It seems the software update did something to the computer. It has been on my desk for a week with Skype and messenger mostly.

I had an Apple "Genius" swap a hard drive from a MacBook 13" to a MacBook Pro 13". When I got it back, the hard drive was unreadable. The "Genius" said that he did nothing wrong and the problem was that the Hitachi hard drive from the MacBook was incompatible with the new MacBook Pro. My original MacBook was purchased in May 2009 and exchanged for the MacBook Pro in July 2009. When I booted the MacBook Pro from the installer disk, and launched Disk Utilities, my internal hard drive was blank/unformatted. How could the Genius destroy my hard drive just by swapping from one MacBook to another?

So my Mac Pro crashed after I installed and used an application (MacTheRipper) which enabled me to rip videos off of DVDs. I was then using Final Cut Pro and Live Type after for my video project when my Mac continued to crash and soon it won't load anything past the blue screen of death. I attempted to boot up my system in safe mode, but still nothing. And after going through it in single user mode, I still have no luck. At the current moment it seems that my OS has decided to restart itself and now I am in the current process of resetting up my mac. But it's way too slow (taking about an hour or more to load up each panel). So I was wondering if it's possible to delete an application when your Mac has crashed? If so, how?

I'm not your typical windows-bashing mac guy. I really loved using XP and was a power user on XP Pro for years. I still use it for a few programs I use. But I just switched to mac. I've still got my old Sony laptop sitting around. When I got the thing, it had Vista Business on it. I used it for a month, but liked XP better and ultimately did a dual boot. Eventually, I just wiped it (having made a "Windows Image Backup" of Vista as it came on the computer so I could restore it when I needed to sell). The original hard disk crashed at one point, so the recovery partition is long gone. Fast forward to today, when I've been trying to restore to Vista and sell the Sony (for over two weeks).
I have TWO separate backups of the original vista install. But MS has their stuff locked down so much that you cannot restore your computer from a windows backup unless the original operating system installation is still in place. The best part is that Windows PC's RARELY have recovery media anymore, and Sony wants $30.00 for recovery CD's when I'm only selling the computer for about $400. Think about how much sense this makes (same idea with recovery partitions). If your original disk crashes, you can't use the restore partition AND your OS is gone AND you can't use your backup to get it back. The kind of crap M$ is pulling these days makes me glad I made the switch.

My HD on my Powerbook G4 crashed - tried everything, won't start up but I was able to use the startup disk to get into disk utility and create a .dmg file of the HD.
The .dmg files is 74GB. I have it saved to a firewire external HD now.
I am currently using my sister's Powerbook G4 that only has 15 GB of space left.
How can I get into that .dmg file to save all my pictures and music?
PS - I already tried to mount it and it warned me that the file my be corrupt and might cause the computer I am on to fail. So I stopped at that point.

I was working my mac using the terminals. I logged in as root using sudo root, and I changed the permission for /urs folder to 754. I should not have done this but I was intending to change /usr/local/svn. Now all the terminals wont open and after the os crashed I tried to log in but that is not happening either. I have tried to boot in safe mode, it is not helping. I was wondering if any one knows if it is possible to log in as root or system. Because at the moment the only thing that seems to be possible way out is to try and repair the OS with the install disk, which I think is risky.

So unfortunately, the hard drive on my 2005 G5 crashed, atleast that's my guess. All it does is click when I attempt to turn it on. I'm fairly good with computers, but when it comes to fixing one - I hand it off to someone with a little more knowledge.
I have two hard drives in the computer - one that's got the OS installed (factory 150GB), and another I use for saving videos, pictures, music, etc (750GB). Now, I'm assuming that because the computer doesn't boot up, that the hard drive with the OS is the one that crashed? Is that a safe assumption?
Secondly, is it possible to recover the application files and other data that's been stored on the crashed drive? If so, how much should I expect to pay? Is it something a local 'work from the home' computer tech could do? The reason I ask is because craigslist is full of guys willing to work on the computer for a decent price.

I had upgraded my software to Leopard and after a year or so the HD crashed the week before Christmas.
I got a new HD installed and I loaded the Leopard software I had purchased. Today I noticed there is no iPhoto. It came basic when I bought the Mac in Dec 2008, I'm certain.
Do I have to buy the iLife to get iPhoto now? Wasn't it free at one time and came installed?

I been using Mac all my life, I have boot camp with Windows 7 X64 install and my leopard is running X64. I been using my windows 7 more than my mac spent 4 month straight using windows (windows put cocaine in there to get us hook). Any way one day my friend wanted to play a game of age of empires on Mac since he doesn't have windows so I boot in mac fine after a swift victory. I boot in mac and windows no longer works: blue screen of death so I reinstall after a few weeks I go back to mac to update and I check my windows partition from my mac all I see is 1 file with weird symbols? I go back to windows and it crashes again. So I figure it my bootcamp has a problem or it my mac side.

I'm new to this and haven't found anything like my problem on this website but about a month or two ago our iBook G4, which I am on right now, started to make a weird sound every so often. At first we just ignored it but then in the middle of backing up our HD the laptop started to make that sound again.
I was backing it up in one account while working in iMovie in the other and it froze. I shut it down by taking the battery out because it would not turn off any other way. I put it back in and it got to the loading screen and started to make that noise again and froze up. We recovered everything on that hard-drive and got a new one put in but I was hopping one of you fine people could tell me what went wrong.

My sisters PC laptop's hardrive crashed last weekend. She lost 1000's of songs, but they are all on her iPod still. Whats the best Windows solution to get these songs off the iPod and onto a new HD? I do have an iMac, so if theres an easier Mac solution, I'd love to hear about that too. Will there be an issue copying over the music she purchased from the iTunes store? A quick google search brought up 5 year old results though.
