OS X :: Ehd Crashed - Copy Itunes Library From Back Up?
Mar 30, 2009
my ehd crashed (the one that I was using for my Itunes library) fortunately, I did a CCC to a separate EHD last summer so I have most of the music. I know how to do CCC and I know how to MOVE my itunes folder and consolidate. But now, what I want to do is COPY my itunes library from my current bootable EHD (from the CCC) and move it back to my main HD. But I do not want to "move the library" and consolidate. I want to keep a back up on the EHD in case this happens again...

I recently opened up iTunes to update some of my podcasts. Since my MacBook can keep a charge for about 1 minute (I'm not kidding), it shut down while new podcasts were downloading since I forgot to plug in the charger. No big deal, I think. This has happened to be before. Except when I try to open up iTunes after turning the computer on again, I'm told that something happened to my library, and some file was renamed itunes library(damaged).itl.
Huge problem: there is absolutely no damaged itunes library anywhere on my computer. I'm missing about 2k songs, all of my audiobooks, and all of my podcast subscriptions. Where in the hell could the damaged library have gone? I've read that simply renaming that one and reimporting it brings everything back to normal, but I have no damaged file to do this with. Where does it typically go when something like this happens?

I currently have my Itunes library on an external hard drive. This hard drive (Maxtor) has been giving me problems. I bought another external hard drive and I want to copy my library onto that. My operating system is Vista. When I hook up the new hard drive can I just do the normal procedure that I used to put the library on the first external hard drive? Is it a totally different procedure?

My iTunes Library is too large and taking up too much of my iMac's 1Tb HD. The iTunes Library is currently at 381 GB. Along with a healthy music collections, I have a ton of video files. I recently tried to import more video files and I got a message that there was not enough room on the hard drive. Â
I have read up on how to copy the itunes library to an external hard drive, and although time consuming sounds pretty easy. However I have a few concerns about 'MOVING' the itunes library. Essentially copying it to the new external hard drive and then deleting the old library on my iMac's HD.  If I do that will I have issues with:Â
1. Using iTunes playing songs, video etc. Will it have difficulty locating it's new location because it is no longer on the 'local' HD? Or if it works ok, will it be really slow?
2. Will my 2 Apple TV's not be able to stream the content?
3. Will my Time Machine backups automatically include contents of the new external HD? I am assuming not.  Â
OR is it just plain easier to leave the iTunes library on the local iMac HD and delete music and video not currently being used? ie; add it into iTunes when I want it, and delete it when I don't?Â

having spend days reading various iTunes HowTo's and guides, I still do not know how to accomplish this: My family's CD collection comprises about 700 discs. All of them are in my Mac's 240GB iTunes library as Apple Lossless files. My dad uses a PC (urgh) and wants to have all of the songs on his hard drive, too, to be able to sync them with his iPod. His iPod, however, only has a capacity of 120GB and he has got a 160GB external hard drive for the music files, which is why I cannot simply copy my Lossless library to his PC.
So the callenge is not move the entire library, there are tons of guides to do this. Instead, I want to convert the music to AAC on my Mac first and then only move these files to his PC's external drive via network. As I have put a lot of effort into my Lossless library, I do not want to take any risks (however, I do have a time machine backup).
My thoughts:....................

I have my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive when using with my MacBook. I've just bought a Mac Mini and want to copy the entire collection over to my Mini's hard drive, but using File > Library > Organise Library and Consolidate files doesn't appear to work. Most files are copied, but some, randomly, aren't. Most of my purchased songs don't get copied either. What's the best way to ensure all of my music files are copied over to my HD so I can copy to my Mini?

I've just upgraded from a Power Mac (V10.5.8) to a Mac Book Pro. I'd like to transfer all the music I have in iTunes (V10.6.1) and don't want to have to buy Leopard just for this one-off. I've used the thunderbolt to copy everything else ok.Â
I'll probably push all my content to iCloud to share on my great new iPhone as well, but 1 brideg at at a time!!Â

I have a number of iTunes libraries, and for the "supplementary" ones, I set the preferences so that iTunes does not copy the media to the Library, instead it just references it.Usually the original media is on a disk other than the one the Library is located on.However I have noticed that when I do this, and add media to the Library, it changes the modification date of all the original media files. This is very impolite and improper behaviour. Why does iTunes change the modification date? For a start, all my backups are made out of sync, because they now think these files have been changed when they haven't.Is there any way to stop this and make iTunes play nice?I haven't tried making the files "read only" but frankly one should not need to do that to avoid the problem (and maybe iTunes would spit the dummy with read only files?).

I did a fresh install of 10.5 in my iMac (which was previously in 10.4.x) recently. I backed up my important stuff (photo and music libraries) by simply copying the libraries (entire folders) to an external drive.
Then I simply copied back the iTunes library to my folder and started iTunes. Unfortunately, iTunes does not seem to show any of my music library content :-(
I know, I know... I should have backed up using the backup feature of iTunes. I promise to learn from my mistakes. However, is there any way I can restore from the straight copy of the iTunes library (incl. several of my iTunes purchases).

I loved the Genius Recommendation Panel on iTunes 9 and found lots of new songs and artists when using itI cannot believe Apple removed it from iTunes 10 and replaced it with a social networking site with the awful title "Ping"
So I replaced iTunes 9 last night, only to find that it wouldn't accept my iTunes library. I managed to reload the songs, but I have lost all my playlists, star ratings, play counts, etc. Its all gone.

So I love keeping all my music in Itunes, well organized and on my local machine, so I have this checked in preferences. I however never want iTunes to save videos in the libary.
I have a large external hardrive that I am using to backup my entire DVD collection in friendly .m4v format. Playing them on my Mac however opens iTunes and copies a file that is nearly 1GB to my local hard drive.

Well my external crashed so I am trying to restore my library back from my iPod but I don't want to start with new metadata. Is there a program out there that automatically places the music file in the exact place iTunes is looking for? Also is a straight copy and past from the iPod itself the best way to recover my music, or should I use a program? The reason I ask is I don't want to lose anything like artwork, tags or lyrics.

Looked at my ITunes library last week to try and make a new playlist but all my years of music/videos etc has disappeared without me doing anything? I have had very bad luck with Time Machine as well and realised not long ago that for 4 years it has only been backing up 'Desktop' and not the whole computer. I backed up all my photos and docs on various DVD's and CD's once I realised but I cant see that I backed up my Itunes library. I am only hoping that on the 'Desktop' external hard drive back ups that I can find it again? If it is on there, how do I get it off as I have heard that you can not retrieve certain items from an external hard drive especially with Time machine although I have never needed to before. Do you think all my songs etc have gone forever now?

I accidentally deleted a whole album off of my iTunes. It contained over a hundred songs from multiple albums. How do I get the album back? Can I use TimeMachine? If so, how? It keeps saying "searching for AirPort"Â
I can't find the album in my files on my laptop either.

I just updated my iTunes but it appears it deleted my library. This sucks because I have spent hours upon hours sorting it, renaming crooked song titles, finding covers and all that stuff. I used time machine to back up my computer like 5 days ago, but I can't figure out how to use it. I wish I could just select that given day (when I made my last backup) and make it turn everything back to what it was back then. How do I do this exactly? I don't care at all if I have to go back to the old iTunes (obviously they will fix this eventually!) - I just want it to look like it did a few days ago.
