Do you know of any simple audio recording app (ie: not a monster audio suite) which takes low CPU usage, and lets you choose the internal bit depth using for audio sampling (ie: sample at PCM16, at PCM24,...) ?
Now, in case you need it, the long version of the question:
I'm digitizing my huge collection of audio tapes, with my G5 iMac (OSX 10.4). The quality of the recordings is somewhat low, so I don't need a high-end audio card, and I believe the builtin audio card of this G5 is more than adequate for this task (Burr Brown PCM3052 with support for PCM16, PCM24, and AC3 16).
I've done my first tests with the just-released new version of Audacity (2.0.0), which is compatible with 10.4 and higher, so I'm very happy to be able to install a brand-new application in 10.4.
Audacity works fine, but has a couple of issues:
First, you can choose the audio track bit depth, but not the internal bit depth at which you're sampling. In other words, I'd expect to use some selector to choose from PCM16 or PCM24 recording, which is what this iMac seems to support. However, I can only choose the storage bit depth, not the sampling bit depth. I suppose Audacity is recording at PCM24, but I've no way to test this.
Second, it takes about 40% CPU usage while recording (yes, I disabled the realtime graphics update of Audacity... if I don't disable it, usage becomes 60% or higher).
I tried Audio Hijack Pro (well, the last version supporting 10.4), and it won't let me choose the sampling depth either.

According to the specs on the Apple site, the depth of the iMac 27" is 8.15 inches (20.7 cm). I assume this is including the foot? Could someone measure the total depth of the 27", from the front to the back including the foot? So the full depth, just to be sure?
My desk (Ikea Galant) has a depth of 31.5 inches (80 cm), so it's not that deep, and it's setup against a wall. I'd like to know how this monster iMac would look on it, and if my face isn't going to be too close to the screen (now about 25 to 30 inches).

I just got my new 24 2.8 imac to replace my original first gen intel 17 imac.
It seems wonderful, screen speed etc.
Only concern I have is that it feels awfully hot, especially upper left corner, not just the frame but also the screen itself.
Is that normal and expected?
My first generation imac with the Merom is basically cold compared to this one.

Apple sliced off a bunch of the vertical resolution compared to the 30" Apple Cinema Display.
ACD 30" = 2560x1600
iMac 27" = 2560x1440
Not really a huge deal. I think they did it to make it true 16:9.
I'm just posting this because this somehow slipped past my notice. I'm one of the people demoted from Mac Pro to iMac and now I am sort of wishing I could still use my 30". (I don't have space to use both.)
Not really a big deal. Just an FYI.
Yeah, I know it's my fault for not paying attention. I probably still would have went with the iMac 27" anyway.

Im using an Imac with Mac OS 10.7.3. I am trying to use a Citrix to open some files but I get the error message that display is configured for 65536 colors and is not supported. I need to us 24 or 32 bit color. I cannot figure out how to make this change. Under system preferences>Display I see nothing that allows me to change depth to those levels.

When I was on Snow Leopard I was painting in Photoshop in 16-bit mode on my 21" Wacom Cintiq. It was a fantastic experience to finally have true control in settle changes in hues and shades all over the spectre.
Now that I've updated to Lion, the screen doesn't display true 16-bit graphics anymore, but instead there is pretty noticable banding. A sort of real-time downsampling in bit-depth going on. Even flickering on some grey hues. I'm very sad about this, and it's affecting my work.
I have a hunch Lion is harder on old graphics cards than Snow Leopard was.
Is my machine too old for displaying true 16-bit/ 32-bit graphics with Lion?
In the system info under the graphics card it says: 32-bits color (ARGB8888), but it clearly isn't the case in terms of what is sent to the display.
MacBook Pro, late 2009, 8GB ram, 2,66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Unibody
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 256 MB
What I've tried so far (without solving the problem)
Closing Macbook screen to run only one display (Cintiq) (to save graphics memory, I thought) - no change.
Trieid displaying the same 16-bit image in different apps: Photoshop, Preview, Quicklook, Pages - no change
Forced monitor into "billions of colors" using SwitchResX - no real change
Anyone who knows more about this?
I will now try:
- finding Cintiq driver updates

In os 10.6 does anyone know a way of lowering the screen sharing color depth from full. When I connect with a vnc client, if I set it to anything other than full the screen never opens. Or maybe subject another good VNC server I could use.

My wife has a MBP 2.4ghz core i5. She has Sims 3 and all the expansion packs. She uses the architectural features to build towns and houses, etc. Well it makes a steady fan noise after a while(she plays for a few hours straight). I checked the istat widget and its at 5998 rpm and 164 F with a noticeable fan noise. Not as loud as windows laptops that I can remember but loud enough to notice. Is this normal? The machine is only 2 months old. It works great and only does this when she plays Sims3(the only gaming we do on it).

I'm not able to reduce the file size of my organizations monthly newsletter. I found a good suggestion but I cannot find Color Sync Filter. Anyway, here's the instructions:
1. From within Pages or any other application you're creating a PDF from, click on "Print" in the File pull-down menu.
2. In the Print dialog box, click on the third pull-down menu box ("Copies and Pages"). Select "ColorSync" from the pull-down menu.
3. Click on the "Quartz Filter" button and select "Reduce File Size."
4. Click "Save as PDF."
I cannot find "Copies and Pages" I do have a choice to change which standard ColorSync but nowhere can I find "Quartz Filter". I'm using Pages 09 and have a brand new iMac - one month old.

Got my new MBP 15" with the i7 last weekend. It was beautiful and dandy for the first couple days then my battery was getting drained like no other. Checked to see if 330m was running but it wasn't and is on integrated. Some numbers, it was showing up 3:00 100% battery (100% health) with wifi on, brightness 50% casual web-browsing. That seemed too low for a battery claiming 8-9 hrs (but I expected at least 5 in real life).
I didn't calibrate when I first bought it but then I did calibrate a couple nights ago. Battery was fine and showing 6 hrs battery life on the menubar. Dandy! It wasn't draining at a fast rate anymore. A couple days later (today) the battery is acting up again, only lasting 3 hrs with 100% and casual use. It seems ridiculous if I have to calibrate it every two days. Is this something I should take to Genius Bar?

I'm trying to figure out whether it is Mail that is automatically reducing image quality, or my internet service provider. I'm not exceeding my ISP image size restrictions. All jpgs are getting to the recipients greatly reduced in resolution. This has never been a problem for me in the past, and my ISP blames Mail. I am doubtful. Is there a setting on mail that could restrict image size that I've accidentally changed?

I've checked out this link and I'm downloading GParted Live in the hope that it will allow me to reduce the size of my current 32GB Boot Camp partition that has Windows 7 installed on it.
I'm shrinking the partition because I never use Windows, I just have it installed in case I need it at some point. And I got a free copy from my University, so why not?
I just have a few questions before I dive in to this;
Will GParted be able to shrink my partition to a size of about 8GB or 16GB?
Will it corrupt any of the Windows 7 OS in the process?
Will it corrupt any of the OS X, or my data stored on my OS X drive?
Will I be able to run GParted from a USB drive?
What is the (or your personal) recommended minimum size of a partition drive?

I am using Windows Vista less and less on my MacBook and the partition takes up about 1/2 of the hard disk space. I tried using Disk Utility but I guess I don't know what I am doing. I choose the Partition button. In the Volume Scheme, I choose the partition that has Windows on it. In the Volume Information text box, I tried to enter a smaller size but the Apply button is grayed out. So, how do I reduce the size of the partition that Windows is installed on? I guess I am not quite brave enough to completely delete Windows from the machine. I "might" need it occasionally. Windows is being used by BootCamp.

Have checked to see that "Fit to Page" is not selected and that there is no scaling selected anywhere when printing.
Can print same document from Preview and it does not scale.
Have tried different pdfs.

I know about the "actual size" button, dragging from the desktop instead of using iPhoto, checking outgoing size with control-click Quick Look, Send Windows-friendly attachments, etc., but none fix the problem. All JPG attachments get reduced to thumbnail size. I have to zip them and the recipient then needs to decompress them to get the full size images.
Is there a way to reset all preferences without uninstalling/reinstalling? I don't want to have to archive/export mailboxes and then reimport.

I'm in the market to buy my first MacBook pro 15" pretty soon and I want to get a case for it. Since the aluminum helps absorb heat from the internals, will a full coverage case cause it to heat up faster and ultimately overheat the laptop? Thanks.
Also has anyone ever had the X Gear Shadow carbon fiber case? Can you give me a quick review?

My MacBook Pro is running hot. The Apple store ran tests overnight and said it is above average. Their suggestion was to send it to the Service Depot and for $310 plus tax anything out of spec will be replaced. Basically sounds like a good deal but I can't give up the machine for the 3-5 days it takes. I typically have many things open, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Calendar, Mail, Safari and have multiple things open in each. Would reducing that number have any impact on the heat being generated?

I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?

I've had this MBP for just over 8 months now, I'd intially purchased one in november, but the audio out used to give a crackle sound so they replaced the laptop. Moving on to the point - in the last week or so, I've noticed the MBP suddenly seems to get very hot and the fans turn on and thus suddenly becomes very noisy. I was using it on the bed so could appreciate that I may have been blocking the vents, but I've had it on a stand the past couple of days and it still seems to do it for no particular reason. The charger usually always gets ridiculously hot, but the MBP used to stay relatively cool, now the MBP gets hot independently of whether its being charged or not. Moreover, my battery life has gone from what used to last 4 hours, to around 2.25.
Cocunut battery gave the following stats:
Current Battery capacity: 4483mAh
Load Cycles: 222
Age: 8 months

I hope you don't mind helping a guy out in his choice in what he truly needs... so I guess I'll get down to the basics.
First off, music is my main priority when it comes to computing, I write all sorts of electronic music, I'm used to working in Windows under Ableton or FL Studio, so I'm not hip to the Mac software for these functions.
In addition to the electronic music I write, I'm also very much into music instruments, I've been playing drums for around 8 years now, bass for 5 years, guitar even... so I plan on multi-track recording... up to 16, maybe even 32?I do plan on opening up my own home studio, I would be using this PC, (not sure if the MBP or the iMac)
I'm also a lightweight gamer, playing games such as Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, or StarCraft II (Diablo 3 will probably be my biggest gaming vice when it comes out) sparingly in my free time, which would be better for this sort of light gaming?I sometimes spend up to 8 hours on the computer, also, so if these screens are too harsh on the eyes after extended periods of time, I'd appreciate if someone could enlighten me to that.
SO, with all that said, which do you guys think would suit me better? (and I'm really thinking the iMac would)... I used to want portability, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable taking a $2,000 laptop with me around campus at the local community college.
- Needs to be able to record up to 32 tracks of audio
- Needs to be able to render high quality tracks
- Minimal latency
- Able to run some of the less graphic intensive games out now
- Easy on the eyes for extended periods of time
Oh, I'm also an amateur filmmaker, I love filming, editing, and producing, etc.Would you guys suggest the i5? i7? Oh, and what clock speed does the 2.93GHz i7 run at when in turbo-boost using all cores?Oh, and what's the resale value of the iMac compared to the MBP? I heard the MBP retain pretty well, is the same true of iMac's?

System Spec: Late 09 21" 3.06, GeForce 9400, 4gb ramCurrently I have itunes and safari running, if i enable the visualizer my imac is noticeably slower, especially when browsing the internet.I thought it might be the fact I was running a second 1080p display from the 9400 would have caused the slow down. But the same thing occurred after i disconnected it. After repairing permissions and restarting, pmram etc.Is the 9400 causing the slowdown? I know its fairly old but itunes visualizer and safari should be quite basic tasks. Its not the end of the world i know but does the 27" imac have similar issues as i plan to upgrade my machine in 2011.

I had a DLink DIR-655 Wireless N router and my wireless was running very fast, 9.7MB using [URL] with no lag looking up sites. I had to upgrade the router since I was hosting a site and the router wasn't working properly for that.
So, I bought a Linksys WRT610N Dual Band router. I have the iMac running on the 5GHz band and it runs around the same speed.
HOWEVER, when I open Safari or Firefox, in the status bar, it says "looking up google.ca..." or whatever site I'm browsing for and can take up to 5-10 seconds before it starts to display the site. When it is on the site, browsing around is fast as long as it doesn't change domains.
ANOTHER HITCH, I have VMWare's Fusion installed on the iMac and Vista installed there and there is no lag to browsing a site. When I type in the site, it immediately goes to the site and I am able to browse fine.
Any thoughts on this?
