im looking for 2tb min external storage solution for my media. i have the backpack shelf so i would like to be able to store it on that and keep it out of sight. i know it can hold up to 5lbs. which one are you guys using?

Which would be better - FireWire or USB2.0? I'm also interested in mirroring since I'd store important data on them, and want both drives to have a copy of each. Is there a disadvantage to that in terms of system's performance?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm curious what people use for external storage on their iMacs. I have a Mac Pro which is getting a little long in the tooth. I'm debating whether to get a new Mac Pro or to get an iMac, which would be a pretty good speed bump from my Mac Pro 1,1. I'd get the ssd drive, and the 2TB harddrive and get aftermarket RAM. But what I like about the Mac Pro is the upgrades you can do. And I like the four hard drive bays, for storage and backup. I've got over 3 TB of photos and music/tv/movies, so I'm going to need an external drive. In addition, I'd like to be able to backup everything. Is there an elegant way to do this on an iMac with an external drive that isn't super loud and hot?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've only got 21 GB left on my iMac out of 639 GB or something (I save a LOT of videos and audios). My computer is running soooooo slow so I'm thinking that it's just got too much in there and too close to the max capacity to run faster. Am I right? Do I need to delete things or purge or what to free up storage?
I've already deleted a ton of files but I think they are saved in more than one place which means duplicate files all over the place I think? Not sure.
But I can't always save something to the folder I want to save it in, it goes in my downloads folder where then I have to move it to the appropriate folder to save in an organized manner. I've deleted most of my downloads folder and many videos but I'd rather save them somewhere instead and not just rely on YouTube to host and save them.
I have an online data backup system too, Carbonite, but I'm not sure I can save other things there that then are not still on my computer?
I could save things on a hard drive but will that really solve my sloooow computer running issues?

I'm new here and was hoping for some feedback. I got a new 2.8 Imac and had it replaced after the Power Supply Position was idling at 82 degrees Celsius, and the top of the case felt very hot to the touch. The fans never "kicked in" even though it was that hot. Anyways, I got a replacement machine and the Power Supply Position now idles at about 68-70 degrees Celsius (much cooler), but the external portion of the machine still feels extremely hot. So my question is, how hot is too hot?? Is my machine normal and am I worried about nothing?? Should I be using SMC Fan Control?? Is the heat because of the 2.8 processor??

I have a newer iMac 24" bought in 11/2007. I have the mini-dvi to vga converter and when I connect it to a external tv capable of 1024x768, the iMac freezes and does nothing. I disconnect and the screen turns blue and the flickers back on and everything works. I have made the connection then booted up, and I have tried every resolution all the way down to 640x480, same thing it just locks up the screen, but again as soon as I unplug the mini-dvi to vga cable from the iMac it flicks to a blue screen and everything comes back. I have reviewed dmesg nothing, and revieiw /var/log/messages. Is there any troubleshooting I can do. I am old school unix/linux guy just converted my family to Apple and would like to use the display on my tv to watch my iTunes movies.

I got an external hard drive and set up iTunes so all of my music went directly to the external drive. That worked for a while. Now I'm getting the message again. Can I do the same thing with iPhoto? So all of the photos that get loaded onto my machine automatically go to the external drive? I can't remember how I set it up with iTunes. Also I don't think podcasts are going to the external, only music.

I want to move all the movies/music I currently have on my 1TB internal PC Harddrive to an external solution that I can access with my MBP, which I plan to make my primary computer. I have read that if using large file formats (yes - RAW) perhaps the way to go is something like Sonnet Temp SATA Express 34. There is a lot of 'talk' of Western Digital My Book but these only seem to be USB. Now I am a little confused - am I restricted (device wise) if I go Express 34 as it appears to have a specific I/F? I do not have a limitless budget and have seen external storage devices between �50 - �100. On a winXP machine it seems almost any will do but I'm not familiar with the mac world.

I figured that because my Macbook Air (and it's limited storage space) was the reason for my needing an external HD I thought this would be the best place. My MBA has run out of storage and I bought a Seagate External HD to move my stuff onto. I guess my question is: What's the best way to combine the external HD with the MBA? Here are a few of the things on my mind:
-Most of the space is taken up by my user folder right now such as itunes, photos, etc. If I copy that folder to the external drive it would alleviate a large part of my issue, at least for the time being. Eventually I will hit the storage capacity as I add applications over time I guess, so this is a temporary solution (although I free up 27gb of space this way). Can I designate a folder on the external drive as the default for programs like imovie and iphoto like I can with itunes?
-I KNOW there is a way to set the external drive as some kind of default drive but is this feasible? It would be a hinderance if I needed to have it connected at all times to access even applications (which I assume to be the case?
-I also wondered about partitioning the external HD and using one partition for additional storage and the other for time machine? It's a 1TB hard drive, and I figure I could make a 100GB partition to use with time machine (my MBA only has a 64gb capacity) and use the other 900GB for files. Is this even possible or does time machine need it's very own separate drive? Anyway, this doesn't necessarily ask many specific questions and I apologize if it appears a little disjointed. I'm looking for help and opinions on the best way to use this new piece of equipment to compliment my MBA.

I'm considering to get Time Capsule for my home network which consist of:
- One MBP (15" Unibody)
- Two Windows XP desptops (connected via Ethernet cable)
- One Windows Vista laptop
Could any Mac users help answer my queries below:
1) Since I'm going to use Time Capsule as backup storage for Time Machine. Can I still manually copy files into its HDD and share those files with other network users?
2) Can all Windows PCs use Time Capsule as a external storage for storing and sharing files even after Time Machine has "marked" it as a backup storage for my MBP?
3) I presume the HDD in Time Capsule is formatted using HFS+. In this situation, do Windows users need to install special software to access the HDD in Time Capsule?

I have an Icy Dock with a 1TB harddrive in it, but it only has eSATA and USB ports. USB would not be preferable for trying to back up stuff. I was reading these forums about eSATA ExpressCards, but they seem really suspect (kernel panics sound terrifying) and a lot of work to get going. I was thinking about just getting another enclosure with FireWire 800, but can't seem to find any advice on good ones. I was wondering if I should just get a new external harddrive. I would like to get out of this without having to buy too much new stuff. Can somebody give a recommendation regarding whether I should get an expresscard, new enclosure, or new external?
