IMac :: Widescreen Computer Not Fit On Computer Desk
Oct 30, 2009
The new IMac 21.5" doesn't fit on my desk. I bought an ikea computer desk that has shelves and a place for the monitor. These new widescreen IMacs, don't fit while the old 20" did!

I searched here and know of the mac pro cuff-pro and some other attaching thing that goes under the desk from ikea, what ones to include the ikea one (link possible?) and the cuff-pro could someone recommend to hold a mac pro either to the side, or bottom of a desk?

I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for a computer desk/workstation. I'm willing to spend some $$ on something, and am just wondering if there are any pieces out there that you guys really like. I use a Mac Pro, which I like to keep on the desk. Besides that, I don't have that much hardware -- MFC printer that's pretty big, but that will probably be replaced by something that has a smaller footprint. I'll be putting it in my basement, so size isn't really a huge concern.

I have an old Dell CRT I'm using currently with my iBook and I want to know how I can just use the display and close the iBook when at my desk without the computer sleeping. Currently if I try waking the computer with the keyboard or mouse, it wakes up for about five seconds before going back to sleep. Is there any way around this or do i just have to keep the iBook Open?

My computer keeps stalling and rotating beachball won't allow me to move forwards or backwards. Ultimately I need to turn off the power. I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC but neither seems to help for too long.

My macbook pro laptop recently died and I am trying to access its time machine backup data through Finder on a different computer. In each one of my folders from different dates, however, the majority of the computer folders I would like to access (i.e. desktop, documents, dropbox, etc) have a little red "no" sign in the corner and prompt the following message when selected:
"The folder “FolderName” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents"
How can I gain permission to see its contents? As the former user, I know whatever passwords are restricting these files, but I don't know how/where to go to give permission to these folders. I've tried going into Disk Utility and changing the permissions there, but to no avail, despite successful changing of the "Sharing & Permissions" to "Read & Write" for all listed accounts.
I'm currently trying to view this on an imac OSX 10.6.8. The dead MacBook pro ran OSX

I have all my music on an external HD that I've used for a few years. I told my old computer (1GHz TiBook G4 with Tiger) to export my iTunes library, which it did, as a .xml file. Then, I opened that file on my new iMac, and only about 1/5 of the songs were found, apparently. This doesn't make sense to me, as the iMac is connected to the HD when I import the old library. If it makes a difference, the TiBook was NOT connected to the HD when I exported the library. I have the two computers networked together via Ethernet right now, though.

I've previously installed OSX on my MBA using an external DVD, using a wifi remote disc option, but because of my current network situation (and current lack of external disc drive) I'm wondering if it would be possible to install OSX on the Air through a direct ethernet connection to another Mac.
Basically it would go like this: MBP <> ethernet cable <> USB ethernet adaptor <> MBA
Possible? Any problems? Any special procedures I need?

I decided to get a USB cable for the Canon MP650 I bought yesterday. I connected it, aligned the head and printed out a test page and it looks ok.
I used the disk that came with the printer and it said everything was installed successfully. Do I need a driver? That should be on the disk, right?
I'm using an iMac OS X v 10.5.8
I wanted to print a test photo, so I clicked on One-Click Photo Print and received an error message: The operation cannot be continued because a printer supporting Photo Print is not installed.
I clicked on System Preferences-Print & Fax, and there's nothing there. I clicked the + sign and in the window that opened, there's nothing listed there either. Why is installing a printer like operating the space shuttle?

I accidentally set up a computer to computer network and I cannot figure out how to make it go away. I also tried to password protect it, to at least lock it down, but the password is removed from the network as soon as someone logs on (and doesn't require a password to do so). Something is fishy, to say to least. I was told to go into my preferences (through Library) but I don't know what to make of the omnioutliner files. How do I get rid of this network?

I hear the computer physically turn on, but a blank screen remains. I recently purchased a new battery for the computer for the battery status read replace soon about a week ago. I sense that maybe there is a shortage in the wiring that connects what shows on the screen to the computer, but I'm not completely sure.

I have an iPhone and when I'm in my house I like to use wifi from my Mac. I'm running leopard 10.5 osx. I go to AirPort, create a network and I see it on the mac and iPhone. After I turn the computer off and back on it's gone. Is there a way to create a network that will not disappear?

I have a unibody MacBook late-2009, latest update of SL 10.6.4.
I am attempting to use a computer-to-computer network from my MacBook to my iPod Touch 3G to use an application called TouchOSC which controls Ableton Live on my Mac.
I can Create Network just fine. It sets up the network inbetween my Mac and iPod perfectly. But once I disconnect from the created computer-to-computer network, that network disappears like it was never created. To use computer-to-computer again I have to re-create the network all over.
All of my other networks are stored just fine and I have no other problems with my house Wi-Fi or any others. I have reset my Network Preferences by deleting the SystemConfigurations files and still nothing doing about the computer-to-computer problem.
I am not sure if this is desired behavior, and if it is, is there any way I can save the network I created for later use? Setting it up every time is painful, I want to use it nearly everyday for music.

I have a MacBookPro that I use in my room connected through ethernet. I am at university and they have only allow one machine to connect to their wi-fi that is available across campus, through mac address filtering. I also have an iPhone which I would love to use wi-fi on, at least while I am in my room lounging around and such. Anyway, the point being, can I use my MBP (connected through LAN) to act as a router so that my iPhone can connect to it? Essentially create a wireless network, so iPhone would find it and I could go online on it via wi-fi?
I tried going on Airport and clicking on "Create a network" (w/o a password), but I get an error saying "There was an error creating our Computer-to-Computer network." It doesn't say much else -- is there a better way of doing this?

I just placed an order for the 24" iMac. Apple lists the weight of this machine as 25 lbs. I intend for it to be my primary desktop machine, claiming its residence atop my computer desk which is made of 8mm-thick tempered glass and aluminum framing. My only concern is that 25 lbs might be too heavy for the glass. Unfortunately I cannot find a maximum load specification for the desk anywhere. If I can find the manufacturer's number I'll certainly call them but I can't find that either. So, anyone here have a similar setup and care to comment? Coming home and finding shattered glass and 2 grand of mangled hardware wouldn't make for a happy time!

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but is it possible to have too many USB devices on a computer? I have a 1.83ghz mini and lately I've been having trouble with USB devices not plugged right into the computer itself. This includes a few hubs I've tried and the USB ports on my monitor. Some examples would be: 1. My apple aluminum keyboard, sometimes I have to unplug it and plug it back in when I start the computer or it won't work. 2. Just today, my iPhone wouldn't sync through a USB hub I've been using for quite some time but when I plugged it into my mac, it worked perfectly.

I've been looking to buy a 21.5" iMac for a while now, but I want to make sure that the iMac I buy is not a downgrade from my desktop pc that I have now.
I want to start with the graphics cards.
My computer has the NVidia GeForce 9500 GT (256MB) graphics card. How does it compare to the 9400M that the base model iMac has? If it's better than my current graphics card, I'll probably go for the base model.
Otherwise, how does my graphics card compare to the ATI Radeon HD 4670 (256MB)?
Now to compare the processor. I have an AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core (2.20GHz) processor. How does it compare to the iMac's 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo?
I have 3GB of RAM so logically the 4GB standard of the iMac is an upgrade.
I usually play some (3D) games like the Call of Duty series on my pc, do some (but not very heavy) Photoshop (CS4), watch and make (not professional of course) movies, listen to music, and surf the net, and do some work for school of course.
In a nutshell:
-NVidia GeForce 9500 GT (256MB) vs NVidia GeForce 9400m vs ATI Radeon HD 4670 (256MB)
-AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core (2.20GHz) vs Intel Core 2 Duo (3.06GHz)
-3GB RAM vs 4GB RAM (logically, the 4GB)
-Playing 3D games, Photoshop, movies, internet, music, etc
Any recommondations?
