I need to set up the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 for the GUI and leave my ATI Radeon HD 4870 for GPU.

I just bought a new MacPro last week (and really love it). I asked the people at the store to replace the standard graphic card with the Nvidia GeForce 8800.Apparently they 'forgot' to take out the original ATI Radeon card.Reading through the forum I found out that the two cards don't work together. No sweat, since I originally only wanted (and paid for) the Nvidia.
Here's my question: which card does my mac actually use? Does it always use the better Nvidia card? Should I take the ATI Radeon card out, or leave it there just in case I ever want to use 4 monitors?
My friend recently argued with me about how stupid I was being about selling my Dell XPS for a less featured MacBook. His standing argument was that Apple gets away with murder - and by that he was arguing that they manage to sell hardware that is subpar by todays standards (hd space, cpu and graphic cards) that you could always find considerably cheaper laptops with good builds with much more impressive hardware and features.The argument over just the OS was starting to haunt me. I knew this before I had decided to return to OSX...but, egh...I guess it would be nice for Apple to deliver offerings that are more common place on the hardware side of things...

I clean my macpro about 3 or 4 times a year, even my card but, honestly, I have never open the black cover the nvidia has for avoiding a disaster...

The ones I play (*if you want to know which ones, I posted them below*) run OK on my current computer. Since my computer itself is quite slow, I decided to buy the new MacBook soon (Not MacBook Pro or Air, because I am still a student, and that would be too expensive for me)
My current PC has the Graphic Card [NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE] on it, while the new MacBook has [NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G] on it (Apple calls it [NVIDIA GeForce 9400M]).
I was wondering if I could still play my FPS Games on the MacBook, so my main Question is:
- Which of the two above named NVIDIA Graphic Card is better? and a sub-question:
- Is the better one better in all things?
I'm looking to buy my first Mac Pro and I'm very excited about it! I haven't bought it yet because i'm waiting for Apple to upgrade their current graphics cards that are available in the current line up. The ATI Radeon HD 5770 or the ATI Radeon HD 5870. Altough they are very good graphic cards,I feel that they are very outdated. Would there be any chance of Apple upgrading their current line up to Nvidia GTX 680?

There is some refubs in the store for the 3.06 imac with the 8800 cards.Will this be quicker than my unibody MBP 2.53 and 9600 video card?I use ilife 09, firefox, alittle gaming using bootcamp and XP.I don't know if I should sell the MBP and buy the Imac because I don't ever move the MBP and like the 24" monitor
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been reading threads here comparing the Quad Mac Pro vs the yet to be released iMac 27" i7 and most seem to focus on use as a machine for video editing with Final Cut Pro. I'm a pro-graphic designer using the last model Power Mac G5 and wonder how these two might compare with heavy Photoshop usage and design for print in general. One of the main issues i think may be drive speed and I'm really not so knowledgeable in terms of the benefits of internal drives in a new Mac Pro vs whatever the best external option would be for the iMac so any insights any has in this area in terms of speed would be highly appreciated. (Is there some super-fast high end external storage option that would suit the iMac will and give me the same performance as a second internal drive on a Mac Pro?)
And what about the memory...I think the ECC option is not available for the iMac...does that mac a huge difference between the two..or am I wrong? I think either machine would be a huge step forward from my PMG5 (which is doing pretty well still) I'm just wondering if it makes sense for me to wait for the next generation Mac Pro to come out (assuming it's early 2010...yes predicting Apple product releases is an exact science as we all know.)

I'm going into graphic design so ill be using it primarily for Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc. and also possibly some video editing. I'm kinda thinking to go with the 24" iMac but i don't know which model to get. Do you guys think the iMac is the best choice for my situation and if so which model would you recommend?
View 22 Replies View RelatedI am a print designer currently using a dinosaur 1.6 G5 tower and CS2. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I also shoot in RAW with my Nikon D80 and currently do most of my editing at my office computer because it is faster. I work primarily in vector graphics which is why my 1.6 is "working." After 3 HD problems and lost data, It is time for an upgrade. I will miss my 20" matte cinema display and will have to find a new way of working in my bright living situation. Yes, there will be color shift on that glossy screen but I use Pantone swatch books.
All this hype for i5/i7 chips is coming mostly from motion designers or gamers which I am not. Coming from a 1.6, I think the base model Duo will blow me away. My office machine is a 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 5 GB, 10.4.11, so the iMac should be equal to my machine at work and probably a bit better. (depending on snow lep lag) I hope to keep the machine for as long as It runs. I also will update to CS4, if that matters. I know the base Duo will be a HUGE upgrade to my current fossil and it is obvious I hold on to my machines for awhile.

I'm thinking of getting myself a Mac. I have not decided on much more than this. Well, a few things have been sorted. I'm either going for a MB 13" as a nice little e-mail and surfing companion or I'm getting the next iMac. If I would go for the latter then it would have to serve as a gaming platform as well and preferably for a couple of years.
Since gaming will be a good part of the duties performed by the dear little thing I must ask what we could expect in terms of graphics cards?
I'm aware that Apple often use last generation GC in their computers so a GeForce GT 120M is probably out of the question.
ok so i have had my imac for over a year now, and the graphic card ram burned out a few weeks ago. i figured it was just because i was working it too hard. usually im running a second monitor, and almost constantly playing a video game on one with hulu running on the other. so i thought no big deal i have apple warranty for the next 3 years, so i took it into the store (which is almost 150miles from where i live). well a week later i went and picked it back up after they had "fixed" my problem by replacing the whole card.
but it hasn't been more then three weeks and im experiencing the same problem. i stopped using my second monitor when i got it back, so i have no clue why its doing this.

it seems to me, that the Geforce Gt 120 (ealy 20009 Imac) is in fact an MXM III,M76XT+/256MB,GDDR3 Card, witch means, it�s an Mobility Radeon2600XT from the previous Imacs, just on an MXM III socle ( it would get better benchmarks because of cooling an higher clocks).
I'm studying in Visual Communication Design. It is capable of designing both in graphics and media communication. And I want to buy iMac for study in this case. It work for this? Because I wondering about NVIDIA graphics 9400. shared memory from main RAM. And I'd like to play 3D Game in Bootcamp. Such as Crysis. Can it play smooth?

The reason I ask about Kanex is because if the new iMacs dont come with a great graphics card, I am thinking of buying the lower end imac and connecting my pc to it for the gaming aspect and using the imac for everything else I do.. "Logic, photoshop bla bla" I just dont want to be stuck at 720p and I cant find any real confirmation if I output my radeon 4870 with HDMI if I can choose a crazy res the imac screen support over the Kanex adapter. I am hoping to god the new iMacs come with a 58XX series card but ya know how that goes.. All I play is Team Fort 2 which should be out for mac soon.

I'm a long time PC user, but I've recently made plans to replace my PC with an iMac. Specifically a 21.5" with an Intel i3 processor. This mac comes with 4gb ram, and a Radeon 5650 HD graphics card.
Now I'm a fairly big gamer, and I like my hardware to be as high-end and up-to-date as possible. If I were to plan on upgrading the graphics card, ram, and processor, could this be easily done at home?
I'm asking because of the unusual structure of the iMac. i.e. the lack of tower, and all the hardware being merged with the screen. I'm assuming it would be a lot easier on a mac pro because it actually has a tower that I can easily open/customize.
Lastly, granted that the above is possible, are the generic graphics cards, processor, and ram chips compatible with iMacs? Or would I need to buy a special iMac compatible version from an Apple specialist shop?
it appears my graphics card on my old iMac G5 is toast. I took it to the Apple Store and they said they'd have to replace the whole logic board for around $680. After searching around this forum, that does appear to be the only fix. My question is this: is the graphics card on the newer iMacs soldered into place as it was in the older iMacs (G5 and I believe the first gen Intels as well)? Because, if so, that is really lame and may affect my computer replacement decision.

So im wondering if this has been solved by ati in newer driver updates, and im wondering if anyone with a radeon 5870/5850 dekstop gpu and confirm this working with a imac 27" screen.
