MacBook Pro :: Screen Flicker In Full Screen Games / Game Becomes Unplayable
Jan 2, 2011I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro 15" with a mini displayport, and I decided I would share my LCD monitor with my windows box. The desktop box is connected with DVI and I have connected my Macbook through an HDMI adaptor from Moshi. Everything works very well, and I'm pleased with the quality of the output, but I'm having trouble with a screen flicker in full screen games.
When I select full 1080p (1900x1080) in any full screen game, the screen "shudders." It does not occur on the OS X desktop, and I can only explain it as a shudder. Lines and text shift perceptively left and right, and the game is unplayable. I have experienced this problem in Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, and Half Life: Episode 2 so far.
Could the problem be with my monitor and the way it handles an HDMI signal? The Macbook is flawless otherwise, with no other issues of any kind. The "shudder" only occurs during full screen games set to 1900x1080. Lower resolutions are not effected and work fine...
I'm stumped.
Edit: I should add that I have no other 1080p capable devices to test the output with.

Jan 19, 2009I have a Early-2008 Model MacBook with a... I think it's a 19" ACER widescreen monitor hooked up dua-screen. Works marvelously, but I want it to play my movies and games, preferably without the laptop screen going black. Currently, playing a fullscreen game has the external screen go black and it plays on the laptop.

Aug 22, 2014Just purchased a MacBook Pro Retina, refurbished (because why not - the same product for a cheaper price) around a month ago. It's the 13 inch and is the model before the most recent one came out (4GB of RAM instead of 8GB - late 2013). From the very first day, playing a full-screen video on any site (be it YouTube, Facebook, etc) just makes the fan much louder than usual (so loud that you can almost hear it more over the video itself). Thought it may have been just a thing with Flash Player being buggy, but the problem has persisted for a while now. I'm not even pushing the CPU to any limits - literally playing a full-screen video on Facebook (not even in HD) makes the fan go crazy.Â
Just last night I tried installing Borderlands 2 and it was the same thing - FPS rate was fine, no lag, just the fan was so loud that I actually got scared for my computer and turned it off. After closing the app and checking out the fan temperature, it was at 91c.Â
Never happens when browsing/surfing or doing my usual work.Â
Should I go give it back to Apple? The thing is I start university in less than a week (and hence will be traveling), so not sure if I can afford to give my laptop in to them for a long period of time (I know it should be free though since mine is a refurb item). May it just be an issue that is quickly repairable or is this worse?

I'm currently running Snow Leopard and the problem persists. I erased and installed during the procedure so I don't think it can really be a corrupted system file or something.

May 9, 2009I'm trying to get full 5.1 surround out of my Quad 2.93 when playing games in 64-bit Vista Ultimate. I want to send the multichannel audio from e.g. Left 4 Dead over optical TOSLINK to my Logitech Z-5500 speakers. Currently when I try this the computer only outputs stereo sound. I haven't encountered any definitive answers on how to get real time surround to work, but I have found the following information.
The onboard sound chip is some sort of Realtek HD Audio. I don't know exactly which chipset. The Z-5500 is capable of decoding DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 input streams over the optical cable. This works fine for movies which are already encoded, but apparently to get games to work in surround I need either Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect to encode the audio from the game in real time.However, I haven't seen any way to enable this in the Realtek HD Audio Manager (Boot Camp driver) or the Windows sound control panel.Is the 2009 Mac Pro's motherboard compatible with Dolby Digital Live or DTS connect in Vista x64 on Boot Camp? If so, how do I enable it?If it's not, can I bypass the problem anyway using third party drivers or plugins?

Mar 27, 2010i have a brand new imac and i am having some problems on a few web sites, not all websites. when i try to make the video full screen it doesn't work. for example, if i go to www.theahl.com i can't make the game highlight clips play on full screen. but if I go to www.whl.ca, i don't have a problem. They both go full screen on my husband's pc.

Windows On Mac :: Brightness Jumps To Full When Doing A Full Screen Apps
Jan 20, 2010When I have my brightness at a certain setting and then start playing a game, the brightness jumps to full. When I then press the button for less brightness, it jumps immediately to the setting it was originally.
This also happens whenever I do alt+tab to return to the desktop. So it appears it happens when I do something that requires to switch to full screen mode cause it also happens with other programs.
At normal use, surfing, office,... this problem does not occur. And also it doesn't happen under OS X

I�m not sure if this has to do with my monitors refresh rate (8MS) or my graphics card (ATI5870). If you check my other threads you�ll notice that I�ve already been having graphic card issues. Mar 26, 2009today, i was testing the new mlb.tv player on my computer (played well once i ran it on firefox 3, safari still has issues here) and it had an option to go fullscreen on my screen and put it on my external monitor. the problem is that every time i expanded it to full screen on the external, if i were to click anything on the internal screen, the screen on the external reverts to a small screen. is there anything in the settings that i'm missing so that i can keep the full screen up even while i'm surfing the net on my internal?

What I can't find out anywhere is how to change the resolution for games. I know for older games (at least on PC) that there was a file that stored your settings, like sound card, resolution, etc.Â
I can't find anything like that here. Diablo 1 says that it needs to have a minimum of 640 X 480. I want to set it at 800 X 600.Â
Update, it looks like Diablo is running in classic mode (I thought it would run in OS X)Â anyway, the question is still the same!Â

Dec 10, 2010I am either going to get the 13 inch macbook pro intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz or the Imac i3 3.06 intel.... but I know the intel chip is better in the Imac, and I can upgrade the RAM to 16GB!!!(: But is the Imac i3 going to be SUPER slow for SIMS3 online and Modern warfare 1...?? like this 06 macbook is? am I going to see a big difference?

My problem is that when I want a program (or more specifically in this case a game) to go into fullscreen mode it automatically goes to my primary monitor and turns the other screen black. I know I can switch the primary monitor from my actual laptop screen to the TV however I just want the game to be full screen on the TV while still having access to my dock and everything on my laptop.

The weird thing is, before, when watching streaming videos from the internet, the screen stayed at the same brightness, regardless of whether there was any mouse movement, or touching the keyboard, or anything. Oct 21, 2010Installed without problems on a 3 y.o. 15MBP and a new iMac. See no performance issues so far, but I HATE the fact that the FULL SCREEN photo viewing is no longer there! I just hate it, that there is absolutely no way to view pictures full screen. period. (this was THE MOST important feature of iPhoto.) As such, zooming in full screen is NOT available anymore either, instead of floating windows with adjustments, etc., zoom, effects, you get stupid permanent bars that you can't even move anywhere. Also, gone is ability to quick launch a full screen slideshow. You are now asked to select photos for a slideshow first, and then create that slideshow. In Classic you will get an ability to view these full screen, thats the only way. The stupid music that accompanies classic is ... well, stupid. I just wish the Apple store in Bethesda MD had it installed so I could see how horrible it is, before giving them $79 for a Family Pack! My money now goes to Adobe for LR3, a much, much better suite! Forgot to mention, this version is NOT 64 bit, and it does not recognize dual-screen mode either, something that Adobe implemented years ago. Shame on APple for dummifying a simple photo viewer to the iPhone level.

Are you able to game on high settings for semi-modern games like L4D2, TF2, etc. at the 27"'s native resolution? What are your thoughts on it as a gaming machine. It seems like the 27" will obsolete itself quicker than a i5/i7 21 inch (if one ever comes out) due to the screen resolution size.

Jul 15, 2010Thinking of buying an iMac in the next couple of months and want to know know if anyone has experience of running games on Windows 7 under Bootcamp? Do they run ok? I know it depends what sort of game you are playing so I usually play MMO's & FPS. I will be using OSX for all non gaming stuff but if the gaming under Windows 7 is not that good I may just buy a Macbook for my OSX stuff and buy a seperate PC just for gaming.
