IMac :: Does Not Recognize External HDD

Sep 3, 2009

I got my new imac running leopard few months ago. I was using my WD 500GB external HDD as my backup disk for time machine etc and was working great till a few days ago. Now,when I connect(with firewire 800)- it does seem to start up but does not appear on the desk top. This happens with the USB connection as well.I first noticed the problem when time machine icon(clock) just kept rotating as if backing up,but it just kept going. this happened several times,so I restarted the imac,plugged/unplugged the WD without any joy. Now it does not even recognise it or appear on the desktop. I have checked all connections etc and all seem ok. I connected the WD to my ibook running 'panther-10.3' and it recognises it(via usb),so I presume the WD is working. The imac recognises another external HDD and appears on the desktop. Not sure what to do next, not really keen on trying a complete new reinstall just yet,and that may not even solve my problem. Otherwise the imac seems to be working all right without the WD connected to it.

Desktops :: Won't Imac Recognize All Folders On External?

Aug 24, 2009

I have a late 06 early 07 intel imac. My problem is I recently purchased a 1 tb Seagate external hd and the imac recognizes some folders and their contents, like pictures and a couple others but will not recognize the contents of my movies or music folders. Now I copied all of my files from a wd elements 500gig and that worked perfectly with my imac. just can't get to my music or movies. Now, I can plug the seagate back into a windows pc and it works perfectly, so i know my files are there, but love to use my mac exclusively. Also running 10.4.11

OS X :: IMac Does Not Recognize Seagate External Harddrive

Quick question. I have an imac running leapord. I also bought an external seagate harddrive to use with time machine. It was working fine for about a month then my mac stopped recognizing the external drive. Any thoughts on what has happened or did I just end up with a faulty external drive?

IMac :: Unable To Recognize External Hard Drive / After Reformat

Jul 7, 2010

Yesterday I reformatted my Macintosh hard drive, partitioned it, installed Snow Leopard on one partition and Windows 7 on the other. I installed all the drivers for Windows 7 from the Snow Leopard disc.

When I plug in my 1TB Seagate external hardrive it's not showing up in Snow Leopard or Windows 7. Not even in Disk Utility. I tried plugging the external drive into my Windows laptop and a pop-up comes up saying "USB Device Not Recognised. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it." I think that this may just be because it's formatted to Mac OSX?

The hardrive had all of my photos, videos and music on so I hope it's salvageable. I find it hard to believe that the hard drive malfunctioned at the same time I reinstalled the software onto the iMac.

IMac (Intel) :: Migration Assistant Doesn't Recognize Time Machine On External HDD

Sep 1, 2014

Using Migration Assistant, I'm trying to transfer back-up files (whole system) from my Western Digital, External HDD to a new-to-me iMac which I've just purchased used. The External HDD has all my files (hopefully!) from my recently stolen iMac. As you can imagine, the circumstances are a bit unexpected and unsettling.

I've followed Apple's instructions for using MA with an external drive, but get hung up like others before me when it comes time for my new (used) computer to locate the disc from which to transfer the files. I've read the replies to others who have posted with similar difficulties using Snow Leopard, but resolving the issue seems to be just out of reach.

Original computer is now unavailable (stolen); it last ran on Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 to 6.8.New computer is used, and also runs on 10.6.8.Both computers are iMac 2009, tho slightly different versions, if that has any bearing on things.I created a temporary account on my new-to-me computer to make the data transfer, so that there wouldn't be an accounts conflict, as others have suggested.Western Digital External HDD, "My Book, Studio Edition," 1TB. I'm using the FireWire 800 port on the iMac. If I need to erase the hard drive on my "new" computer, I'll need a little instruction and hand-holding on that one.

OS X :: Mac Won't Recognize External HD - FAT32

Dec 6, 2009

I formated a new 1.5TB WD hard drive, using the eSATA cable - in the FAT32 format so I can use it on my PC as well. (It was formatted on the MAC)

I was working on the Hard Drive via eSATA and the express card. Then the Hard Drive was accidentally unplugged. Subsequently, my MacBook Pro didn't like that and gave the warning message to properly eject ... too late! I restarted the MAC and it still won't recognize it - I've tried eSATA, USB, firewire- and nothing. The hard drive was all 3 connections. So, I tested the HD on a friend's MacBook Pro and the hard drive is recognized without any hesitation and it works fine. So, there is nothing wrong with the Hard Drive - its my MacBook that won't recognize it.

The HD won't even show up in disk utility of my MAC. I've restarted many many times and I've tried every port available.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Recognize External HD

May 28, 2010

I have viewed a number of topics on external HD's that can't be recognized, but can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I own a WD 500GIG External passport drive, that has worked with my MAC since I purchased it. All of a sudden yesterday when I plugged it into my macbook (in the same slot I always plug it in) I got the USB port is drawing too much power. I immediately checked forums around the net and people were saying the mother board needs replaced. Well I have a mac mini at work an a second macbook pro at home. I plugged the same HD into all three computers and got the drawing too much power.

One of my macbook pro's has firewire 800 so I tried to connect the drive using that, but now it just doesn't recognize. The lights flash on the drive as if it's mounted properly, but I can't get my computer to recognize the drive. I've been through disk utility and the drive does not show up there. I have ordered a firewire 800 to 6pin cable to attempt to connect it that way, but other than that I'm out of luck I think. I can't even get a computer to recognize the drive in order to reformat it. Has anyone ever had this problem before? If so what steps did you use to resolve it, that is if you were able to.

PowerPC :: Won't Recognize Second External Drive

Aug 18, 2008

I've searched the threads but can't find an answer to my problem. I have two problems really but am hoping if I can fix the first, I can work out the second with existing information on the forum. I have a WD 500gb external drive which I use with my Powerbook G4 through firewire. It works fine but now I can't seem to use any other external drive. I tried connecting another WD 320 gb external drive which I am plugging in through USB, but get nothing. I also tried running my other mac (Ibook G4) in target mode to access information on its hard drive but have the same issue - the Powerbook just won't recognize/mount (i.e. I can't see it in finder or desktop or disk utilities).

MacBook Pro :: Doesn't Recognize External Harddrive

Mar 6, 2012

my mac book pro is not recognizing my WD 500 GB external hardrive. I checked and double checked to make sure the external was mac compatible before I bought : and it was. It also is not recongizing an WD external hardrive I borrowed from a co-worker.  Here is what I have done and checked so far.

- I checked to see if the externals worked on other Mac Pros( just to double check mac compatibility)-  they showed up on on 4 different Mac books.

- I checked to see if  there was something wrong my usb ports. So I incerted my 4 GB flash drive in the USB port, and then my co-workers 4GB  Flashdrive-  My computer recognized both the devices.

-  My computer was very full ( that is why I bought a bigger hardrive to back up my files) so  I thought  maybe there just wasnted even enough free space for my computer to recongize the devices. So I freed up 70GB of hardrive space on my mac book. - still nothing.

- I also checked to make sure  I had the suggested software updates to run the drive, before I bought it.

OS X :: Can't Recognize External Hard Drive On 10.4.11 Power PC G4, OK On MacBook?

Mar 1, 2010

I have a PowerPC G4 running OSX 10.4.11 that contains a lot of media files. I want to transfer them to my external hard drive (1 tb) so that I can use them on my newer MacBook. I was unable to partition or erase anything on the external hard drive from the PowerPC, because I kept getting an input/output error. I followed the same process and was successful at establishing partitions on my MacBook. Now, I plugged my external into the PowerPC to copy the media files, but it isn't recognizing the partitions on the external harddrive! What did I do wrong?

Hardware :: Windows Can't Recognize My External Hard Drive?

Jun 5, 2010

I've just installed Windows on my MacBook with Boot Camp. I decided to format the disk NTFS instead of FAT because everyone says NTFS is safer and more reliable. The problem is, I can't seem to use my external hard drive when using Windows, and can't copy files from Mac OS to the Windows disk because NTFS is read-only. There are some pretty big files I have on my MacBook that I want to use in Windows.

The external drive is a Western Digital "My Book".

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but is there a way of using my hard drive in both Mac OS and Windows? If not is my only option of transferring data from one OS to the other to reinstall Windows as a FAT drive or to use DVD-Rs?

MacBook :: Suddenly Won't Recognize External Hard Drive

Sep 9, 2014

I am using an Intenso 2,5" MemoryStation as an external hard drive. I have a few folders with pictures on it and my TimeMachine. When I plug it in it would usually show up on my desktop and start backing up my hard disk automatically. Something has now changed.

My dad gave my Macbook a new hard disk with more storage. When he put it in, he first safety copied all my stuff onto a separate external hard drive - ie. not my own. My Macbook is working perfectly and looks and acts exactly like before. But when I plug in my external hard drive, it now doesn't show up, neither on my desktop nor in disk utility. I can see that the external hard drive is responding as a light switches on and off when I plug it in and out; I don't think it is broken as I have taken very good care of it.

I'm worried that I have formatted my external hard drive so that it will only respond to a (now old) backup of my Macbook, which I can't access from my new hard disk.

I do also have the external hard drive that my dad originally used to backup all my stuff - with the older backup. Is there a way I can have my external hard drive read the new external hard drive (with the old backup of my Macbook)?

OS X :: ITunes On External Hard Drive Unable To Recognize Music

Jan 6, 2011

I have 100gigs of music so I successfully transferred my iTunes media to an external hard drive, and identified this new location within iTunes/Preferences/Advanced/Location. Everything worked great until I had to shut down and start up.

Now, it no longer recognizes the media library. When I try to play a track in iTunes, iTunes says the original file could not be found. It prompts me to locate this one track, which I do, and that one track will play. All of the other tracks have the (!) sign next to them in my iTunes library.

I have double checked the settings in my iTunes preferences, everything appears to be configured as when I first made the successful transfer (identifying the external hard drive as the location).

I've made sure to restart once the external hard drive is connected.
