2012 iMac running 10.7.4 (lion). I have an external hard drive that I use for Time Machine. It has been working fine. Today, I turned it on to run Time Machine and the computer does not see the hard drive. I used a different cord to connect it. Still did not work. I tested both cords with a different external drive and they worked. So it is not the cords. The hard drive is getting power from its separate power cord. The hard drive knows when it is hooked up because the motor in the hard drive revs up when I plug it into the computer. However, the computer does not see it on the desktop or in finder.

Using Migration Assistant, I'm trying to transfer back-up files (whole system) from my Western Digital, External HDD to a new-to-me iMac which I've just purchased used. The External HDD has all my files (hopefully!) from my recently stolen iMac. As you can imagine, the circumstances are a bit unexpected and unsettling.
I've followed Apple's instructions for using MA with an external drive, but get hung up like others before me when it comes time for my new (used) computer to locate the disc from which to transfer the files. I've read the replies to others who have posted with similar difficulties using Snow Leopard, but resolving the issue seems to be just out of reach. Â
Original computer is now unavailable (stolen); it last ran on Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 to 6.8.New computer is used, and also runs on 10.6.8.Both computers are iMac 2009, tho slightly different versions, if that has any bearing on things.I created a temporary account on my new-to-me computer to make the data transfer, so that there wouldn't be an accounts conflict, as others have suggested.Western Digital External HDD, "My Book, Studio Edition," 1TB. I'm using the FireWire 800 port on the iMac. If I need to erase the hard drive on my "new" computer, I'll need a little instruction and hand-holding on that one.Â

I just updated my iTunes but it appears it deleted my library. This sucks because I have spent HOURS upon HOURS sorting it, renaming crooked song titles, finding covers and all that stuff. I used time machine to back up my computer like 5 days ago, but I can't figure out how to use it. I wish I could just select that given day (when I made my last backup) and make it turn everything back to what it was back then. How do I do this exactly? I don't care at all if I have to go back to the old iTunes (obviously they will fix this eventually!) - I just want it to look like it did a few days ago.

A day ago, for an unknown reason, hundreds of my songs in my iTunes library lost their link location. I painstakingly got about 10% through refinding the location to each song but I got to thinking. Is there a way through Time Machine to just restore my library the way it was 2 days ago? Are there specific files I can copy over?

Time machine keeps copying the whole itunes library. Again, again, again. That used to be different, time machine used to just back up the changes.
So I erased the itunes library from time machine & restored 1 TB (!!!). I would like to have time machine back up the itunes library once, then just the changes. Is that possible? Â

for capacity reasons, i currently run itunes on an aging macbook pro with media stored on an external hard drive. how can i transfer my library to a new macbook air and keep the media as-is on the external? the library size is still too large to keep on the computer itself and i'm actually content with this setup. i'm trying not to affect the song ratings, playlists, apps, podcasts, settings, etc..Â
the macbook pro is currently running snow leopard, while the air is up-to-date with mavericks, if that makes a difference.
both machines are running the latest version of itunes (11.2.something-something).Â

I'm having a problem with time machine repeatedly backing up my /~/Music/iTunes directory. Everytime I plug in my drive, I get a 192Gb backup which will loop continuously. I've confirmed that it's this directory using BackupLoupe and have reset time machine, repaired the disk with no errors, completely reformatted my time machine disk, and continue to have these issues. Console shows no real issue, backupd process simply requests a 192Gb backup and proceeds with it. While I cannot be sure, this appears to have started sometime after the 10.6.4 update.

So I finally got a TB hard drive and am using Time Machine to backup my MacBook Pro which has about 4 GB of free space on it. Most of my hard drive is taken up with music files. I want to know how I can move my library to my external drive (maybe just doing time machine will do this?) but keep some file on my computer so I can play them without the external drive. What's the best route? I know that consolidating my library to another drive will do half of what I want, but what about keeping some songs on my computer- like 50 GB worth (but I will also want these songs on the external drive so that they are backed up!)

I have a new iMac on which I used Migration Assistant to migrate all my data from the Time Machine backup of my old iMac. The Mac is running 10.10.1 and my old Mac is running Mavericks, fully updated.Everything went smoothly except for iTunes. Some of the Library did not appear in the new iTunes and of those that did, some of music is not available.
The error message appears.I tried finding the original Library on Time Machine, and copying it back to the new mac. I checked the Library on the old iMac where the backup came from and all works. Various methods suggested on the forums have resulted in most of the Library being listed, but with some random songs and albums still showing the above error message. I can still access my old Mac for the Library if needed. How to get complete Library into the new iTunes?Â

I want to move the location of my iTunes library music files. At present they are all on my time machine . I want to move them all to my imac. Can I do that and keep all my playlists and play counts?
its 1000s of songs . Originally I used the time machine as a networked drive but it can cause the songs to pause so I'm thinking it would be better to have the songs on the internal imac drive
how can I move the songs so I can re-open iTunes and the playlists (with plays in the 100s) find the song in the new place?

I have an iTunes library of approx. 60GB that is currently stored on an external hd connected via USB to a mac mini. I access this music library via other devices such as ipad, iphone bose soundtouch. Currently the iTunes library is only accessible from the other devices if the mac mini is awake and functioning.Â
I am therefore considering moving the external hd USB connection from the mac mini to my time capsule which provides the network in my home. I assume that this will provide me with an always on music library rather than one which is dependent on the mac mini. Firstly is this assumption correct or will I still need to have the mac mini awake and iTunes open on it in order to access the iTunes library from an iphone for example?Â
If my assumption is correct, what steps do I need to go through to relocate the hd from the mac mini to the time capsule and still be able to play music?Â

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.

I have a 1TB Time capsule, I would like to attach a USB drive to the Time Capsule and transfer my iTunes Library to it so I can run itunes from wifi. I am new to network stuff. My current iTunes library is on a USB drive velcro'd to the back of my Macbook - rather inconvenient, the USB port is loose. The music files are external but the library files with ratings/play counts are in the iTunes folder.

My iTunes library has apparently filled my entire iMac (according to the computer I have over 97 days' worth of music). I would like to know 1) how to properly save my iTunes library to an external hard drive and 2) how to use iTunes so that it uses the library on the external drive.

My 2008 iMac hard drive (2TB) went belly up for good. I have always added new OSX versions as they came along, right up to and including Mavericks. I had all my iTunes (over 1 TB) on this hard drive. No panic as I also have a daily SuperDuper back up of the entire iMac hard drive on a WD 2TB external HD (SuperDuper Clone OLD). I decide to replace the iMac with a brand new MacBook Pro Retina (256 GB, so obviously no room for iTunes Library), and a new WD 4TB external HD for the iTunes Library.Â
Wanting to do a fresh install on this new MacBook, unlike the 2008 iMac which had one install going right over the previous OSX. Now, I move the entire iTunes file from my old SuperDuper back up (SuperDuper CLONE OLD) over to the new WD 4TB external hard drive (iTunes NEW), drag and drop, nine hours later it has fully transferred.Â
I now fire up iTunes on the MBP, in the Advanced Pref I point the iTunes Media folder location to the new external HD: /Volumes/iTune New/iTunes. I then shut down iTunes and restart it while holding down the ALT/OPTION key, pointing it to iTunes Library.itl.Â
Yet this new iTunes Library on my 4TB WD external hard drive (iTunes NEW) does not show up with music. What does show up are a 3535 old PodCasts.Â

I don't remember doing this in the last few days, but I must have updated to 10.6. Just launched iTunes and the Library comes up blank/ new - it created a new one. I Option + launched to navigate to my existing Library (on external hard drive) and it is grayed out, iTunes will not recognize it.

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

I'm having a perplexing issue with Time Machine. Time Machine (the app) recognizes all the backups made to its drive; however, System Preferences doesn't recognize the last backups and won't make automatic backups to the drive. When I try to force a backup, it starts an entirely new backup (as in, separate folder and the whole system).
I just want Time Machine and System Preferences to recognize the backup that I've been running for weeks.

I have a 24" Dual Core IMAC, Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and have a new MAC address. My external hard drive (Time Machine) stopped working when I got the new MAC addy. The problem is that I do not have the old MAC addy. Is there any way to get my good IOMEGA hard drive to start working again with Time Machine? If so -- how?

I just did a clean install of Lion on my 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo iMac. Before I did that, I made sure that everything was backed up on an external drive through Time Machine. Now I want to restore everything and when I enter Time Machine, all that is visible for back ups are those that were done after the clean install of Lion.Â
when I open the files on the external back up drive through Finder, I can still see all of the back ups that were completed, including the most recent that I want to use to restore my iMac. I am considering another clean install to start the process again.Â

I just bought a Macbook Pro, I love it, it's my first Mac ever. I've been a PC guy up until now. Here's my problem:
I have a PC desktop (running Windows XP) set up with my router so I can access my external hard drives via the network. Basically, I plug the HD's into the PC, the PC recognizes them, and I set them to be shared over the network. Really simple. However, I plugged a spare HD into my Macbook Pro to use with Time Machine. It worked fine, the HD is set up and working with Time Machine.
I then went to plug the Time Machine HD into my PC desktop so that I could access it through the network from my Mac and use Time Machine wirelessly, but the PC won't recognize the Time Machine HD. It doesn't show up in My Computer, or anything, nothing happens when it is plugged into the PC. I'm guessing it is simply a formatting issue or something.

I got a new MBP (running Snow Leopard). I used Migration Assistant to migrate the data and setting from my old MBP (running Leopard) from my Time Capsule backup onto the new MBP. All went smoothly, and I used the new computer for a day to check all was well. This included testing Time Machine on the existing Time Capsule - all the old backups were there and it worked perfectly. the new computer also successfully added to these backups. So I wanted to refresh the old mac, so I booted from the old Leopard install disk, wiped the drive with Disk Utility, and did a clean install of Leopard. All was fine. Now I connected to the Time Capsule and attempted to use Migration Assistant to put a my stuff back onto the old computer. It wouldn't do this (couldn't see any backups). Does Migration Assistant only allow transfers from old systems onto new, not the other way round? This is a major bummer, if so. How can I get my stuff from my new computer back onto my old? Do I have to upgrade the old one to Snow Leopard in order to do this?

I have this issue in both macs I own, a 2010 MBP, and a 2012 Mac mini. After I upgraded to yosemite, Time Machine will not find my backup disk. I have been using the same network attached storage drive for 4 years for time machine backups. I has worked fine with all the macs I've owned until now. I can see the disk in Finder, I can go to disk utility and mount the Time Machine disk, but when I go to Time Machine preferences and try to select the list, the disk is not listed there, even though is mounted.
