Mac Mini :: Get It To Recognize External Blu-ray Player?
Mar 26, 2012
I recently bought my first Mac and I bought an LG CP40 blu ray player to watch and burn DVDs. I know the player works because the first thing I did was use it to install Office for Mac. I put the disk in and the install happened automatically and worked fine. My problem is I can't get the Mac to recognize that there is even an optical drive connected to it so I can't open the contents of disks or watch DVDs.

Have a new Mac Mini, using an external drive but I can't get it to show up in finder. It's a Lacie 1TB Porsche design HDD, using a USB connection directly into the mini. I tried it at first by connecting to an open usb on my cinema display..no good. Also no good when connected directly into the mini.

Part of my iBook says there is an initialization error when I open up the DVD program, and the other part of it says I have have no drive at all. But I have tried everything that I was told to do. Basically I have a problem with my white iBook Laptop, a G3-4 800 mhz, which runs on OSX-10.14.11, and has 384 sd-ram
It has a DVD application program, but opening it just gives an initialization error. The date on the App is something from earlier this year, so it's not that old. It has the corporate "DVD" player logo. (but it won't open) If I drop down the Apple menu at the top corner, "About this Mac" I see the list, and if I select Burners, it says No Burner Found. If I look for CD or Audio devices, there is nothing like that on the list but i can find the cd drive under ATA drives (it has the HD listed, and then a CD drive). When I open Disk Utility to find out about 'repairing disk permissions' all I see on the left side of the screen are 2 drives: the hard drive and a CD drive (LG Model 8245B), and I cannot select 'repair permissions' or 'verify' because they are in light grey (un-selectable). If I click on 'First Aid" bacically nothing happens. It's sort of like "nothing's broken, nothing to fix."
So I went on to reset the PRAM, as this was the last suggestion
someone gave me.
Some interesting things: The thing plays CD's. It detects a CD drive, like I said. There is no CD/Audio player Application, anywhere (i was looking to see if it was read/write). There is also, buried somewhere, an older Apple DVD application, for an Apple DVD player. It wants to run on OS-9. So I open OS-9, and after OS9 has opened, it tells me that OS-9 doesn't support it.
The DVD application I mentioned earlier (it's about 28 MB) is newer, and runs on OS-X 10.14. (So.. yes, this was an OS-9 computer which got upgraded to OS 10.4.11)
Lastly, it came from a brother in law who is a filmmaker, and I know that he used it for DVD's. I was told i could also burn with it.(it doesn't burn cd's right now) He re-set some names and passwords when he gave it to me; from what I can see, all the 'permissions' are ok, and set to my name. I have his passwords in case I need them.
If the computer has forgotten that it has a DVD drive, then I can't run OS 10 (which is a dvd), if it were to crash. This worries me, since I had to do this with my old Pismo only 2 months after buying it (at least it had a dvd drive!) I lifted the keyboard to see if there was a label on the cd-dvd player.
Nothing. I can't pull it out (like I could in my old Pismo) to examine the underside. How does it come out? (it's a tray-loader)
Before I start trying to remove the drive, just to see what it says...
Is there any program on the iBook which will actually detect, and tell me what hardware I have? I think that the computer still thinks it has the old cd drive in it, even though it was obviously upgraded to a dvd drive. If I could find out the brand I could maybe download some software driver
for it..?
(i am sort of afraid to go poking around the system files if I know that I cannot use the OS- 10 startup disk when it crashes (since it is a dvd)...
So is it beginning to sound like there WAS a dvd drive in there first, which burned out, and was replaced by a cheaper LG (that's Dell) CD-R drive

Superdrive recognizes all disks, even movies. DVD player is set to open when a movie is inserted so everything works up till that point. The movie never actually loads and when I click play the windows reads "Supported disc not available". I use iSkysoft DVD Copy Pro to back up my DVD media. When I attempted to do this yesterday DVD copy pro would not load the movie. I used VCL and the movie played fine then tried DVD Copy Pro and it loaded the disc. But DVD Player still doesn't load the movie. I booted in Win 7 and Win media player played the DVDs fine.So far I have:
• Tried several DVD media and all read fine but DVD player does not load movies. Note, I have only inserted US region DVD
• Repaired permissions
Repairing permissions for “Lion”
Permissions differ on “Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/iPodUpdater.framework/iPodUpdater” ; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .

I have a 400Mhz G4 with 1GB of ram running Leopard. Works great except it does not play DVD's. When a DVD is inserted the following Error box is displayed:
"A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"
In addition, when trying to change screen savers, "Error: Can't load bundle" appears. Does anyone know of a work around for the DVD? Windows Media Player does not work and VLC will play only audio.

My Mac Mini cannot recognize the Seagate 80GB Momentus that is inside it. It saw it for a little, and I went through the whole Leopard installation and then it said at the very end that it couldn't complete the installation and now when I try it can't see the drive at all. I tried reseating it - how come no one's talking about how there are four more pins on the seagate than there are ports on the mini.

I have a Mac Mini 2006 with Core Duo 1.66Ghz and an 80GB HDD. I use this computer as a Media Centre PC (not really nesecarry information). The 80GB hard drive has died in this machine. I know this because I took the drive out, formatted it, reinstalled it in the mini and attempted to install snow leopard from a boot disk. It gets to about 60% and then throws an error - clearly the drive is about to die.
In my wisdom, I opened the Mini up and replaced the hard drive with a drive from an old (but dead) windows laptop. When I did so and rebooted, I connected a USB keyboard and held down the option key on boot to boot into startup screen (to select the the boot disk I had made). The SL boot disk on a USB key which is recognised when I boot it on another mac. The mini seems not to recognise the keyboard input when holding down the option key. The mac booted straight into Windows which was on the new drive. It booted into the windows "windows did not boot correctly last time, do you want to start up in startup mode?) screen. The keyboard inputs were also not recognized on this screen.
I thought that there may have been an error because windows was on the drive, so I scrubbed the drive and re-installed it as a completely blank drive in the Mini. Again attempted to get to the startup screen and again the same problem. Only this time I am getting a flashing folder with a question mark (meaning the mini cannot detect any bootable drive presumably). The USB stick is flashing, but to me the Mini cannot recognize the keyboard input from the connected keyboard. Could the USB ports have somehow been damaged? Also through this process, I have reset the P-RAM on the mini as well.

My G4 laptop never had any trouble seeing/reading/writing to my Vista PC. My Mac Mini won't see it though. It has been a long time since I configured my G4, but I don't remember having to do anything special.
I've opened Directory Utility and don't see any SMB to configure. I checked Help on my Mac Mini and it wasn't clear enough for me to get all the information.

Does anyone know if I can get a win-amp like skin for itunes? I hate how the mini player takes up so much space, if I could make it longer and shorter(instead of this stubby one) it'd be so much more convenient.

I became accustomed to using CMD+Z to switch iTunes into Mini Player and normal view. Not sure why I started using CMD+Z (I'm pretty sure it was the original shortcut before it got changed..?). Anyway, in previous iTunes versions, the green button would take it to and from Mini Player. So, to get the CMD+Z shortcut to work, I created a shortcut in Keyboard (in System Preferences) for iTunes, and assigned the menu title "Zoom" to CMD+Z. Well, that obviously doesn't work in iTunes 9 since the green button, or "Zoom" now just does what the green button does for everything else in OS X. So to get around that, all you have to do is add two new shortcuts. One for Switch to Mini Player and one for Switch from Mini Player and assign them both to CMD+Z (or whatever you prefer). Thought I'd share that if anyone else was in the same boat as me.

So, back in the day (last week actually) I always had my iTunes in "mini player mode" on the right hand side on the bottom of my screen, just above the trash bin. When I needed to select a song or a different playlist, I would click the green button, apply my settings, and click the green button again and go back on about my business. However, with iTunes 9, you have to hold the option key to switch to the mini player. I am severly bothered by this, is there any way to hack iTunes with the terminal fix this? I liked it the old way. Who's with me? Also, when iTunes is not the active window, and you switch to mini, the active screen is automatically hidden (like when you push Cmd+H)

I bought the correct Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and 3.5mm audio cable for my black macbook 2.4GHz in order to project and watch movies, etc. When I hook everything up, the MacBook display settings recognize another display immediately. However the Samsung doesn't see anything connected into the VGA input. I know its not the Samsung HDTV because I had an '08 HP laptop hooked up just fine a few months ago. Should I try different resolutions? I searched the forums for awhile but nata.

I was trying to burn a new cd and before I used the application I had inserted a blank disk which my computer didn't recognize. When I tried the application to burn the burn folder, I got a message to insert a blank disk. I tried using the Disk Utility, but when I try to select the volume Superdrive, the option is dimmed. How do I eject the blank disk from my Superdrive? I tried restarting but that did not eject it.

I got my new imac running leopard few months ago. I was using my WD 500GB external HDD as my backup disk for time machine etc and was working great till a few days ago. Now,when I connect(with firewire 800)- it does seem to start up but does not appear on the desk top. This happens with the USB connection as well.I first noticed the problem when time machine icon(clock) just kept rotating as if backing up,but it just kept going. this happened several times,so I restarted the imac,plugged/unplugged the WD without any joy. Now it does not even recognise it or appear on the desktop. I have checked all connections etc and all seem ok. I connected the WD to my ibook running 'panther-10.3' and it recognises it(via usb),so I presume the WD is working. The imac recognises another external HDD and appears on the desktop. Not sure what to do next, not really keen on trying a complete new reinstall just yet,and that may not even solve my problem. Otherwise the imac seems to be working all right without the WD connected to it.

I formated a new 1.5TB WD hard drive, using the eSATA cable - in the FAT32 format so I can use it on my PC as well. (It was formatted on the MAC)
I was working on the Hard Drive via eSATA and the express card. Then the Hard Drive was accidentally unplugged. Subsequently, my MacBook Pro didn't like that and gave the warning message to properly eject ... too late! I restarted the MAC and it still won't recognize it - I've tried eSATA, USB, firewire- and nothing. The hard drive was all 3 connections. So, I tested the HD on a friend's MacBook Pro and the hard drive is recognized without any hesitation and it works fine. So, there is nothing wrong with the Hard Drive - its my MacBook that won't recognize it.
The HD won't even show up in disk utility of my MAC. I've restarted many many times and I've tried every port available.
