IMac :: DIVX And Flash Playback Choppy
Nov 3, 2009
I have noticed my imac 27" has started being choppy with playback of both divx and flash. I know there are other threads about this for flash but I haven't heard much about divx. I tried installing divx, vlc, and perian, but in all the playback is choppy.

I have a late 2011 iMac (21.5") that has worked pretty well since purchase in November, 2011. However recently I started to experience severe lagging and even major skipping when viewing Flash video content on a number of different sites. The behavior exists in both Firefox and Safari, and I've tried a clean install of Flash twice now with no improvement. I also upgraded my router to address intermittent wireless outages that I thought were contributing to the video performance issues.
I was previously using an old Airport Express, and purchased a new Airport Extreme. That improved my wireless performance dramatically. Constant signal drops disappeared, and my speedtest.net speed went from all over the map with an average of 5Mbps to a smooth steady 50Mbps almost every time. However the video issues have persisted. Yesterday I downloaded temperature monitor to see if overheating was an issue. Here are my readings after about 40 minutes of running flash content:Â
I just purchased an APC UPS (something I've been meaning to do anyway) but I'm doubtful power fluctuations are the culprit. I'll try plugging directly into the router of course, to see if somehow flash content is causing some wifi signal variance that speedtest doesn't pick up. But I'm beginning to worry that my GPU is the real issue here.

I have a 20-inch Mid 2007 iMac with 2.4 intel core duo with 4gb memory running OS lion 10.7.4. I am getting choppy video with play back. I have tried resetting Safari, Uninstalling and reinstalling old and new versions of Adobe Flash. Am I SOL? Is my Processor to old? Can I upgrade it? Or do I need a whole new computer?

it basically appeared today, and I haven't changed anything, to my knowledge. Playback is choppy, with some stuttering and static noises...It does this even when playing straight to the computer speakers...I've disconnected my router to make it isn't the culprit (it slows down my internet connection quite a lot).Â

I'm currently running an old powermac G3 that's fine with everything except video playback.
My question, is it the 300mhz processor, the video card (stock ATI rage), or a combination of both?
Before it's said, I would buy a new computer if I could afford it.

I have a 12" Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz with 1.25GB of RAM. I can't seem to figure out how to make my video playback smooth. I have tried so far playing videos from Itunes and also avi files. No matter what i try its still unwatchable.
I'm running Leopard with latest patches. Web browsing and other things are fine, its only video that is giving me problems

why are all my iTunes videos so damn choppy?! High Quality Youtube videos are "ok," but HD Youtube videos are just as bad as trying to watch anything on iTunes.
what do i need to upgrade (word choice?) to successfully watch iTunes videos crisply. i'm assuming it's like a graphics card or a processor or something. i could buy a decent computer in the next couple of months but i'm not because my parents are strongly against me upgrading anything because i'm going to college Fall 2010, so they said i'll just get a high-end something or other when the time comes. the point of what i just rambled about was is there something on my current PC that i can upgrade?

I have a 13MBP 2.26ghz 2GB ram etc and when i try to play 720p movies like harry potter or deja vu, during action scenes the playback becomes choppy and the video turns into a bunch of squares and i usually miss a few second of the scene. it usually happens on graphic intensive screens such as the a girl dropped her teddy bear into the ocean waves and in harry potter 4 when all the glass frames break from the wall and fall down. Im using LED Cinema Display

I have a Rev A MBA but for the first time I just downloaded a TV show from Itunes and tried watching it back. It was very jumpy, freezing and video and audio were sometimes out of sync. I turned off all other applications, which improved it, but did not solve it. I tried downloading a second one and had the same problem.
Is this common? I would have thought of all applications to work well, Itunes should be one of them.

I have a Mac Mini 2011, I started having audio playback problems with about 90 percent of my purchased Itunes movies. The audio is fine as long as you don't maximize the viewing window, as soon as you do the audio become choppy. I keep all my movies on an external hard drive, 1Terrabyte Western Digital Mybook (the one recommended for macs. I even tried copying a movie onto the computer hard drive with the same result. This all seemed to start after I had my mac mini hard drive replaced.Â

When time machine backup is running, iTunes playback is sometimes choppy. I have a brand new 27in iMac (i5) and not much else running. I'm new to Mac and not sure what I should expect in terms of performance impact when time machine is running. No other problems with the iMac. I've had it over a month and all good. I'm also pretty sure I've played music while time machine is running before without any issues. Also, time machine backup takes a lot longer than I expect (seems like 10-15 minutes but I didn't clock it). If it's running once per hour, the diff each hour should be small. And I'm not doing much besides playing music, doing some email and surfing the web. Is there a way to see what Time Machine thinks has changed and has decided to back up this hour?

I'm fairly new to mac so your patience is appreciated.
When I transfer an avi movie onto a usb flash drive from my PC it works fine in my Divx player but I seem to have a problem when putting the same movie from my mac onto the usb key. The Divx player does not read the usb key?
Also, which "forat" should I use in the disk utility when erasing (formatting) the flash drive (i.e. MS DOS (FAT) ... MAC OS Extended ...) ?

Just bought the new mac mini with HDMI out - 2.66Ghz, 8 Gb RAM, 500 Gb HDD
A lot of mkv or avi files I playback appear pretty choppy in VLC - my primary app for watching movies and tv shows.
I have a Drobo with two 2 TB SATA drives where I store all my stuff and which is connected to my mini via firewire 800.
I've tried playing the same video back from both the Drobo and from the internal hard drive, to see if the choppiness was on account of the external drive or not. No difference really. A choppy video remains choppy from either place.
It's pretty strange because some 1080p videos play just fine, with no choppiness whatsoever, while other 720p videos or even standard definition divx files are still choppy.

I found this forum through a google search, and wanted to put the word out. It seems choppy, laggy or otherwise unplayable youtube videos and other streams using Adobe Flash 9 or 10 on OS X 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 is a very common headache with no clear resolution other than, 'Your CPU is too slow".
It seems I may have found a suitable fix to allow flash videos (as poorly as adobe flash is coded for Linux and OS X platforms) to finally play on my old, but very much alive 12" PowerBook G4. I'm not talking HD videos in DVD glass pond-like quality, but I'm talking 1fps to an estimated 10-15fps with mp3 quality audio that doesn't stutter.
My specs as tested and functioning:
System: 1Ghz PowerPC G4 12" aluminum
Version: OS X 10.5.8 (originally came with 10.3.9)
Video: GeForce FX Go5200 32MB
Memory: 768MB DDR (upgraded from stock)
HDD: 160GB Western Digital (upgraded from stock)
ALL I had to do (not perfect, but very very noticeable improvement!) was right-click the video while it was playing, and choose the 'settings' menu for Adobe Flash player. From there, I simply unchecked the "Use Hardware Acceleration" on the Display tab, and bump the "Local Storage" tab slider bar up to 10MB.
If anyone else is or was experiencing this problem, please try this quick and easy work-around out and share your experiences. If we can get a few to confirm, I'd be happy to seed it on the google interwebs so others can find the information easily.

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this query - moderately new user - well had my imac for 2 years but havent spent a lot of time getting up to speed with it - needs basis only.
query - i have eyetv elgato about 2 years old running vers 2.5.3 of the related software - I have a hard disc full of recorded material and want to convert it to divx - bought Divx Pro - mind you only $30 Australian- in the understanding that it would easily and quickly!! (toast takes about 3 days!) convert .eyetv files to divx avi - that function is available on the pull down menu in eyetv and it did it once when i used a trial version of Divx Pro.
Now it refuses to do it saying that the version i have is not supported and to go back to divx - i have the latest version of divx though.
I do notice that eyetv are selling their own divx converter for $100 and suspect this may be the issue
Does anyone else have this problem or know a workaround to it - do i have to go back to older versions??
Divx have told me that they dont have any agreements with or information about eyetv and to go and ask eyetv. Eyetv have not so far responded to my requests for an answer.

Just noticed that when I'm lying on the bed with my MBA on my legs, watching so [URL]videos....it starts skipping in about 10-15 minutes.
I don't see core shutdowns.....but actually the video/audio is going to desync and starts skipping....is this normal? Do I have to get a MB/MBP just to watch Hulu and flash videos?
I think this may be related to the temperature, but usually it's not that hot.

I noticed that all the flash videos played inside Safari on my MBP were slow and choppy when switching to full screen mode. This started happening after upgrading to Flash 10.1 r85. I disabled hardware acceleration on Flash's settings, and video playback went back to normal.
What can I do to use hardware accelerated Flash, but without the slowdowns?

I have an iMac and an ACD monitor connected, therefore I have no open port to connect to my 37" Panasonic LCD.
I'd like to connect the TV to my iMac somehow, I'm wondering if wireless is a (reliable) possibility. If so how do I go about it?
Do I buy a 'media router', such as the D-Link DSM-750? Then simply plug the TV's HDMI port into the D-Link? (I'm not network savvy at all.) Sounds simple enough if that's the case....
Are there any better ways, or better products that I can use to play divx files wirelessly to my TV?
Also, I'm using an Apple Airport Extreme Time Capsule, would the D-Link replace this or could I (easily) hook it up to my Apple router?

I am running an eMac G4 with 1.25 Ghz and 1.25 Gig RAM. HD is 40 Gig. I believe the vid card is 32 mb. I have the newest version of Flash that the Power PC will support. 10.3 I believe. Youtube and in fact all videos are kind of choppy. Anything I can do here without spending a fortune.

My iMac (Intel) is having serious problems playing saved video files, especially from the Elgato EyeTV hybrid (file extension .eyetv). Everything played fine for about 1.5 years, then suddenly the iMac just started pinwheeling intermittently and stopping the video every few seconds. It was like watching Youtube on dial-up. I tried closing programs, stopping Time Machine, restarting, reinstalling EyeTV... but nothing fixed it, it only got worse and actually started freezing the whole machine and causing incredibly slow and scary restarts with lots of blue screens. At this point I actually re-formatted the whole darn computer and the files played OK for maybe a day or two, then just started pinwheeling the .eyetv files again, although movies on my hard drive play ok now as far as I know. Youtube and other streaming has always been fine. Watching live-feed TV on the EyeTV has never been a problem either. Why can't I watch my recorded files?

My current setup is: 2009 20" nvidia iMac, 4GB RAM/640 GB HDI generally would like to know what my expectations for decent video playback should be - thankful for any help people can offer on this:When using the Apple DVD player on full-screen mode, dvd playback seems quite grainy, with pixel lag on fast video sequences. Specifically, I was watching original DVD music concerts. The concerts were at night, so the picture is darker, but on my TV & stand-alone DVD player, the picture was less grainy and there was no 'pixel lag'. During computer playback no other programs were open, WLAN was off. The HD is empty except for Apple's stock software. So, could one or more of the following be a logical reason for grainy playback?:a) it's a computer, not a stand-alone DVD player hooked up to a TV.
b) screen quality: TN panel compared to CRT TV.
c) integrated graphics, i.e.: the 2008 iMac with dedicated ATI Radeon 2600 Pro card would be smoother.
d) display settings on Apple's DVD player. (using stock settings BTW)
e) full-screen mode performance is generally not perfect on any system.
f) none of these - something else entirely.

I have several problems with my NEW Imac. First is trying to archive photos. I select the correct amount of photos from IPhoto to fill a DVD. I initiate the burn process. Near the end of the burn I get a message "error." No explanation, no advice just 'forget it.' I have wasted a few discs before abandoning this operation but my photos are mounting up and I fear losing them if they are not archived. Any ideas? Second is a major problem with creating a slideshow in IDVD. get a faultless preview. Excellent image quality from my photos. I burn a DVD. I then try to play it and it jams up on the 3rd photo. I skip forward and it jams again after one or two photos. Also the quality of the photos is terrible, the dissolves are jumpy and the 'grain' and noise of the photos makes them look like 5th generation VHS. BUT it will play on my $60 DVD player to my television. Same horrible, unacceptable quality and there is always one 'glitch' in the sound, which of course wasn't there in preview. These applications are quite useless unless something can be done to correct them. I'm hoping for a magic button somewhere that will unlock these problems. Third is unrelated to photos. My Epsom colour printer will not print with the font that I have selected for my work. It's there in the font book and my laser printer finds it and prints with it. The Epsom will print this font from my G3 but not from my Imac...?

I have a 2G iMac and I have it connected to a Philips HD TV with a mini-dvi to dvi adapter that is connected to a HDMI-to-DVI video cable. I also have a Y audio cable connected iMac to the AV1 on the TV. The problem is I can only select one source on my TV, either AV1 or HDMI 1. If I select AV1 I can hear the audio from the video streaming on my computer (no video shows on the TV), but if I select HDMI 1 I can only see my desktop background no audio or video. How can I get both the video and audio to play at the same time? Why am I only seeing my background and not video?
