My current setup is: 2009 20" nvidia iMac, 4GB RAM/640 GB HDI generally would like to know what my expectations for decent video playback should be - thankful for any help people can offer on this:When using the Apple DVD player on full-screen mode, dvd playback seems quite grainy, with pixel lag on fast video sequences. Specifically, I was watching original DVD music concerts. The concerts were at night, so the picture is darker, but on my TV & stand-alone DVD player, the picture was less grainy and there was no 'pixel lag'. During computer playback no other programs were open, WLAN was off. The HD is empty except for Apple's stock software. So, could one or more of the following be a logical reason for grainy playback?:a) it's a computer, not a stand-alone DVD player hooked up to a TV.
b) screen quality: TN panel compared to CRT TV.
c) integrated graphics, i.e.: the 2008 iMac with dedicated ATI Radeon 2600 Pro card would be smoother.
d) display settings on Apple's DVD player. (using stock settings BTW)
e) full-screen mode performance is generally not perfect on any system.
f) none of these - something else entirely.
I just got my uMBP 13 a couple of days ago, and today for the first time tried to play some .avi videos I have. I'm using vlc to play them. On my 4 year old Windows XP SP3 laptop they play clearly and sharp without any pixelation or graininess. But on my mac, these same videos pixelate and appear grainy when played. And now that I think about it, the Welcome animation that you see when you turn on your mac for the first time was pixelated and grainy as well. I didn't pay it any attention at the time because I was so excited about finally getting my mac.
ower Mac g5 dual 1.8ghz pci-x 8 gb ddr ram two 1.5 TB hard drive wifi card installed nvidia mx5000 standard graphics card Here is the issueWhen I boot and press "option" to select a hard drive or disk everything looks finebut when I load into either the OS or a OS install disk there are long light green lines going from the apple all the way to the right end of the screen in a straight line. And when it boots most dark colors look fine , but in white boxes and at the top menu bar there are either long light green lines or very small to large green blocks , they are translucent but they are there.I have done everything I can think of.Ive re installed the os, re seated the graphics cardre seated all the ram. I have a 2G iMac and I have it connected to a Philips HD TV with a mini-dvi to dvi adapter that is connected to a HDMI-to-DVI video cable. I also have a Y audio cable connected iMac to the AV1 on the TV. The problem is I can only select one source on my TV, either AV1 or HDMI 1. If I select AV1 I can hear the audio from the video streaming on my computer (no video shows on the TV), but if I select HDMI 1 I can only see my desktop background no audio or video. How can I get both the video and audio to play at the same time? Why am I only seeing my background and not video?
I bought some -R DVDs. I want to burn a 700 MB .avi video onto a DVD so I can play it in my DVD player on my television. I put in -R disk, clicked on the DVD icon when it appeared on the computer screen, pasted in the video file I wanted to burn and it seemed to burn it but when I had finished, I put the DVD into my DVD player connected to television and when I clicked 'play' nothing played, there was just a grey screen.

I own an iMac G5 (not the iSight Version), and I have everything up-to-date (10.5.8). Whenever I try to play a video(be on YouTube, or even on the Mac itself) it doesn't play smoothly, like it plays a few seconds, stops, then plays again.
Info:iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Video Playback not smooth
During video playback (itunes, vlc...) stutters every 50 seconds or so (no exact interval) and the video currently playing pauses for a few seconds, the audio however continues on. After the short pause it skips a few frames ahead. It doesn't seem like a big problem, yet it's very annoying while trying to enjoy a movie.
Also, I'm not sure if these issues are related, but every minute or so my magic mouse jumps around the screen for multiple seconds (not only during a film, all the time...). Also very annoying, as I work with Photoshop & Illustrator, meaning I do very precise work with my mouse.
I just received my refurb 2.8Ghz 24" iMac today. I have been setting it up and transferring files to it for the last few hours. I just installed 4GB of RAM from Crucial to upgrade from my 2GB that came preinstalled. I opened Hulu and started watching a video full screen while I was working on something in the same room. All of a sudden the playing video froze and there was a loud high pitched squeal coming from the speakers and some crackling, followed by another high pitched squeal from the speakers and then the computer froze.
I know it wasn't a fan noise or a hard drive noise, it was definitely a high pitched audio tone and crackling from the speakers when it hung up. The only way I could make it stop is to hold down the power button and turn it the iMac off. I wonder if it could have been my photo collage screensaver kicking in while the hulu video was playing fullscreen that caused something to lock up? It seems like it was in the timeframe from when I walked away from the computer to the time it crashed.
I've got an iMac 27" late 2009 with these: Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3Â Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB and I would like to upgrade my "ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB" to something higher with 2 GB. My question is: is it possible? Like taking off the screen and display and replacing the old video card with a new one without any issues?
For about a month now I noticed that whenever I'm watching a video on YouTube in HD or when I'm watching a movie trailer on Quicktime at 1080p, the playback lags. Prior to this everything worked well. All the videos I watched played smoothly at any resolution at any quality. I have an iMac with the following specs:
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB of DDR2 SDRRAM ATI Radeon HD2600 Graphics Card with 256 VRAM
Also, I do not have many windows or applications open when I watch these videos. I have also close to 21GB of hard disk space used up out of about 280.
I purchased it in June and have had this issue from the start. I am getting some artifacting/ghosting effects on the screen at times when watching videos. It happens 3-4 times during an hour or so of playback and resolves itself within a few seconds each time. The effect looks similar to that of poor encoding or something along those lines which is what I thought it was at first, until I tried playing videos that I knew for a fact didn't have this problem. The video pretty much freezes or colors get inverted in some areas, but the audio is not affected. Let me know if you need any additional details.
I have a Mac Pro 1,1 with two displays and an NVIDIA 8800 card. I was booted into Windows 7 using bootcamp, the machine froze during video playback, hard rebooted. Blue Screened in Windows, went to restart into OS 10.5.7 and I get the Apple logo and spinning gear, it then flashes briefly and goes to a grey screen. The second monitor never engages. The machine is fully booted as I can connect to it with my laptop through filesharing. I've tried PRAM/SMC reset, removing all the RAM/all external devices, pretty much everything. I've even tried replacing the video card and switching PCI slots, with the same issue still occurring.
I have had my black macbook for a little over 2 years it is a c2d 2.16. It has ran flawlessly until recently it has been freezing during video playback. Mostly during online streaming like hulu or netflix. The screen usually gets these little red or green dots all over it when it happens. A couple times the the sound continued but usually it stops. What is going on? It has happened almost every day for a couple weeks now. I am running the latest version of OSX
I'm using a 15" 2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo Macbook Pro, with 3GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, with Snow Leopard. Western Digital 320GB 7200 drive.
I've recently been having video playback issues, starting within Final Cut Pro. The clip will play fine at first but then stutter and freeze on and off. I have to constantly stop and play to get through it.
This is question is being posted in the Mac OS & System Software because I couldn't find Quicktime under Windows software. Quicktime Player works fine under XP Pro on one PC and my other XP Pro computer has Quicktime Pro. MOV video is washed out running with Quicktime Pro but also Realplayer's playback is washed out. All other image files display fine.
I have a 20-inch Mid 2007 iMac with 2.4 intel core duo with 4gb memory running OS lion 10.7.4. I am getting choppy video with play back. I have tried resetting Safari, Uninstalling and reinstalling old and new versions of Adobe Flash. Am I SOL? Is my Processor to old? Can I upgrade it? Or do I need a whole new computer?
When playing DVDs on the Apple Air USB DVD player, the video can get quite jumpy when the screen image is complex. Pans are especially challenging. This is when the computer is driving a 1920X1200 external monitor.
I recently upgraded to iLife 06. Now if I import a clip into iMovie, then apply, for example "fade in" at the start it results in jerky playback. It renders the whole program useless.
I have a 12" Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz with 1.25GB of RAM. I can't seem to figure out how to make my video playback smooth. I have tried so far playing videos from Itunes and also avi files. No matter what i try its still unwatchable.
I'm running Leopard with latest patches. Web browsing and other things are fine, its only video that is giving me problems
Just noticed that when I'm lying on the bed with my MBA on my legs, watching so [URL]videos....it starts skipping in about 10-15 minutes.
I don't see core shutdowns.....but actually the video/audio is going to desync and starts skipping....is this normal? Do I have to get a MB/MBP just to watch Hulu and flash videos?
I think this may be related to the temperature, but usually it's not that hot.
why are all my iTunes videos so damn choppy?! High Quality Youtube videos are "ok," but HD Youtube videos are just as bad as trying to watch anything on iTunes.
what do i need to upgrade (word choice?) to successfully watch iTunes videos crisply. i'm assuming it's like a graphics card or a processor or something. i could buy a decent computer in the next couple of months but i'm not because my parents are strongly against me upgrading anything because i'm going to college Fall 2010, so they said i'll just get a high-end something or other when the time comes. the point of what i just rambled about was is there something on my current PC that i can upgrade?
I often have 720p MKV video to watch, and I was wondering whether the current generation base model MacBook White is capable of playing them. I know that the MacBook White has the 9400m GPU which should be capable of doing it, but does it work in reality? What software do you need?
I am a new Mac user and so far I love it! My biggest concern is the quality of video playback when I am watching a DVD movie. On my Old HP laptop, the quality was far better. Is there an issue with playing DVD's, or does it have to do with the screen resolution of the MBP (1440x900)? As far as still pictures go, the screen looks great! Its just video that doesn't look the best...
I'm trying to figure this out and I've gone through 'Energy Saver' settings and turned off 'Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible' but sometimes - not reliably, playback of a video file just pauses and then resumes as normal after about 10 seconds. It happened just the same with QT and Perian under Leopard and now happens in Snow Leopard too. Similarly, this sort of oddness happens with playback on VLC too.
