IMac :: 21.5 Inch - Youtube Videos Choppy - Sound Messed Up
Oct 31, 2009
Before my new iMac took 2 minutes to boot up and I re-installed SL and it is now fixed but now, like the 27 inch, the videos on youtube are really choppy and the sound is messed up. It only happens occasionally and is fixed with a restart and is really annoying. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I found this forum through a google search, and wanted to put the word out. It seems choppy, laggy or otherwise unplayable youtube videos and other streams using Adobe Flash 9 or 10 on OS X 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 is a very common headache with no clear resolution other than, 'Your CPU is too slow".
It seems I may have found a suitable fix to allow flash videos (as poorly as adobe flash is coded for Linux and OS X platforms) to finally play on my old, but very much alive 12" PowerBook G4. I'm not talking HD videos in DVD glass pond-like quality, but I'm talking 1fps to an estimated 10-15fps with mp3 quality audio that doesn't stutter.
My specs as tested and functioning:
System: 1Ghz PowerPC G4 12" aluminum
Version: OS X 10.5.8 (originally came with 10.3.9)
Video: GeForce FX Go5200 32MB
Memory: 768MB DDR (upgraded from stock)
HDD: 160GB Western Digital (upgraded from stock)
ALL I had to do (not perfect, but very very noticeable improvement!) was right-click the video while it was playing, and choose the 'settings' menu for Adobe Flash player. From there, I simply unchecked the "Use Hardware Acceleration" on the Display tab, and bump the "Local Storage" tab slider bar up to 10MB.
If anyone else is or was experiencing this problem, please try this quick and easy work-around out and share your experiences. If we can get a few to confirm, I'd be happy to seed it on the google interwebs so others can find the information easily.

I am running an eMac G4 with 1.25 Ghz and 1.25 Gig RAM. HD is 40 Gig. I believe the vid card is 32 mb. I have the newest version of Flash that the Power PC will support. 10.3 I believe. Youtube and in fact all videos are kind of choppy. Anything I can do here without spending a fortune.

The sound works fine otherwise (though it's never loud enough on this machine - I think the speakers may have issues). Regardless, for youtube ONLY, it will play video fine and maddeningly... no sound! I got this machine used and I don't seem to recall that it had this problem a couple years ago, but that one day it just stopped having audio for youtube. I have already tried resetting the PRAM and PMU - no effect.

I have an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz Imac and I am running Snow Leoprad 10.6.8. The problem I am having is that since I recently updated Safari, I cannot run Youtube videos. Every time I try watching one, the page crashes. I know I am not alone here and I am surprised Apple has not approached this situation yet. I have tried running youtube videos on Firefox and have had no problems doing so, thus I figure it must be Safari. I've tried running safari in 32 bit mode and that is also not fine. I have emptied the cache and reset Safari as well but still no go.

This has been going on for about two months and I have tried everything including a trip to the Genius Bar. What I found out at the Genius Bar is that when the new internal hard drive was installed in my iMac the repair people just transferred everything from my old disk to the new disk. So, Lion was not properly "installed" and the Genius re-installed Lion so that I would have the extra disk space should I need to start up on the C drive for repairs. It was not long after the new disk installation that Safari stopped playing Youtube videos properly. I uninstalled and reinstalled Java, but I still feel like the proper plug in is not installed to run videos. I have no problems running youtube on Chrome or FireFox, so it is just a Safari problem. How can I find out what is missing and where can I go to get the program to install?

iMac (24-inch Mid 2007), Mac OS X (10.7.3), I keep all software up-to-date

I purchased a refurbished, original MBA 1.8 GHz and it is great. The only issue is that when I watch videos on hulu, youtube, etc, the computer struggles and gets choppy. This happens most but not all of the time. I think this also occurs more often when I have my external monitor hooked up as well.
I want to make sure that there isn't something wrong with the machine. It was purchased as a secondary computer and understand that it is not supposed to be a workhorse - but I would still like to watch videos uninterrupted.

I'm having problems with iTunes video playback under 10.4.11. I'm on a 733Mhz Digital Audio G4, which I realize is somewhat below the iTunes specs, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to get rid of the choppiness in video playback. My machine has a PATA drive but it is hooked to a SATA card.

I was just listening to some music through some speakers on my old 1.8ghz cd macbook and then I unplugged the cable from the headphone jack and noticed that there was a red glowing light coming from the headphone jack. Now my sound is messed up, sound works properly only when something is plugged into the headphone jack. Nothing will play through the internal speakers when I try to adjust the volume with nothing plugged in I get this.

The new 27-inch iMac uses up to 365W vs 280W for the old 24-inch! (going by Apple's published max. power consumption numbers. I doubt they would lie because it isn't exactly favourable for them to put in falsely high numbers in an environmental report).
That means there's some extra beef behind the extra components. Perhaps the ATI 4670 is a bit overclocked and the 4850 runs a bit faster than the old iMacs? Admittedly that 2.8 GHz i7 is going to suck a fair bit of power - the recent 2.8 GHz i7 860 model runs at a 95W TDP, however, the quad core iMac isn't available until November. So it won't be using the i7 860, and my guess it is using another custom processor, something a bit more power efficient, somewhere in between the 55W TDP of the old iMacs and the 95W TDP of the i7 860.
The difference between the power consumption of the two computers is 85W. The old iMac had a 24-watt digital amplifier, this new one has two 17-watt amplifiers. That brings the delta down to 75W. Say the iMac's i7 processor has an 80W TDP. That now brings the delta down to 50W. The new display likely wouldn't increase power consumption because of the LED backlight.
I'm not sure if I'm missing much (OK, two extra RAM chips may use another few watts), but there is still a fairly massive 50W unaccounted for.
Just a bit of fat to chew on
