IMac :: Cannot Boot From DVD For Running Disk Utility

Sep 28, 2010

Well this is an ongoing saga with my iMac. Looks like my third hard drive has gone south after 4 years. All Seagate Barracuda drives. But now I can not even boot from the the snow leopard dvd to at least run the disk utility. I tried the following: holding down 'c' and nothing, hold down options and I get the mouse cursor but nothing else.

MacBook :: It Won't Boot After Trying To Repair With Disk Utility, Cannot Boot In Safe Mode

Jun 11, 2012

I have a MacBook 4,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB Ram. It is taking over 10 minutes to boot up past the gray apple screen when I turn it on. First I cleared the PRam (?) then I checked the disk using Disk Utility Verify, and it said the disk needed repairs. So I ran the disk repair and it said it was unable to fix the errors on the HD.

I did a little research and tried booting into the Single User mode, then running /sbin/fsck -fy. It said that it found errors but could not fix them. I ran it two more times as suggested and got the same result each time. I then tried rebooting and now instead of taking 10 minutes to boot up, it takes about 5 minutes on the gray apple screen and then just turns off. I started in Verbose mode to try to troubleshoot the error and it appears the last thing to come across the screen before power down is a message "Apple Yukon 2: RxRingSize <= 1024....etc".

I decided next I would run the Apple Hardware Tester. The test came back with an error code "4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265". I am very good at searching the web but I could not find any errors that had the IG0C or IGOC or any combination at the end, but plenty of 4SNS/1/40000000(1) errors with different endings. From what I can tell people are saying anything with 4SNS/1/4000000 is a logic board failure, but this computer was literally just booting this morning until I did the /sbin/fsck -fy.

Windows On Mac :: Creating Window 7 Boot Disk W/Disk Utility

May 26, 2009

I'm currently in the process of trying to install Win7 on my Macbook Pro (purchased July '07) using an ISO burned to a DVD with Disk Utility. Unfortunately, the DVD isn't bootable, and while the symptoms match what's in this blog post, the author's solution involved using a Windows-only program.

I'd like to know if it's possible to re-burn the ISO without the version number in the filenames as in the original solution, but with Disk Utility or something else that a Mac can use.

OS X :: System Freezes While Running Disk Utility?

While I was partitioning my disk, disk utility froze, along with my whole system. So I was forced to reboot.
Now my Mac thinks there's an 80 gb chunk of data somewhere (the data that would have been my partition), but I can't find it. How do I regain the lost space?

PowerPC :: Operating Noise Similar To Running Disk Utility

Dec 29, 2006

I meant to ask this a while ago, but just getting to it now. My powerbook makes this very weird nose that I find not only annoying, but concerning. Whenever I move my mouse around, it sounds like the HDD begins doing some action and it makes a noise similar to running disk utility. Also when I have the screen open and if I carry the powerbook, say for example of I want to hand it to someone or show them something, a medium to high pitched noise comes on again emanating from the HDD area. What the heck is going on?

Have done this before using system disk and holding C etc. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard it no longer sees my system disk. Restart holding down C with system disk installed...and mac just boots-up normally! Ultimately I want to run the disk utility to check that the Hard Drive is healthy after install.

MacBook :: Tried To Repair Using Disk Utility - No Boot Up

Feb 2, 2009

Yesterday I decided to Install Windows Xp on my Mac. I tried to partition it but BootCamp said, "Verifying failed. BootCamp can't partition disk." So I started reading about this problem on the Internet and I found out that I have to use the Mac OS X Installation Disk and use the Disk Utility to "Repair" the disk. I started Disk Utility and clicked "Repair". Many files were missing so it tried to repair it. So now when I start the Apple-logo and the loading-circle is "frozen", so it just loads and loads and loads and loads, and nothing happens. I decided to format the disk from Disk Utility but I can't format it! I can't do nothing! So now I cant start my Mac! If it is possible to take a backup or something before I format it, or keep the files it would be lovely!

Or does Mac OS X/Windows XP dual-booting has to be done through the bootcamp?

Hardware :: Running Disk Utility - Moving BIG File On External Hard Drive

Dec 23, 2007

Will running the 'repair disk' disk utility on an external drive screw up any of the files on my external hard drive? I only want to run it because I can't transfer a file from my HD to the external...it's a 6 gig video file in quicktime format, and I'm getting 'error 1309', which I understand is related to file size on FAT32 format. I know it's a huge file, but I've moved others to the external that are over 20 gigs with no problems (iMovie projects, etc). Anything I can do to get this file moved to the external?

OS X :: Deleted Boot Camp Partition In Disk Utility - No External HD

Jul 18, 2010

I deleted my Boot Camp partition in Disk Utility (as usual, Windows wasn't working and wouldn't fix). I resized my Macintosh HD partition to cover the whole drive and repartitioned. Now Disk Utility says that the partition's capacity is 160 GB and that I've used 40 GB and that 70 GB is available. My Boot Camp partition was 50 GB. I've read that to fix it I have to boot from my install DVD, go to Disk Utility, set the number of partitions to one, and delete the entire drive so that there's zero data left. Then I'd reinstall OS X and restore from a Time Machine backup. As of now, I have no external hard drive.

MacBook Pro :: Failing To Boot Up Despite Disk Utility Repair And PRAM

Jun 2, 2014

Problem: MBP frozen on boot up screen with Apple logo and turning gear (which freezes after a while aswell)

Solutions attempted: disk repair via custom recovery- disk utility, PRAM

Device: MacBook Pro 15" (early 2010) running 10.9

Additional info-

Never had any issue with the device and this seems to have happened all of a sudden. Installed an SSD a few months ago, and just realised the ssd did not have a recovery partition. However I connected my older hardrive via USB to access recovery which seemed to work fine.

NOTE: for the past few weeks, every now and then I was unable to power the device off and whenever this occurred, there seemed to be a few bugs (ie unable to empty thrash-error 50 and enable to increase/decrease volume/screen brightness). However, holding the power button and restarting it seemed to have fixed it.

Had the same issue but this time around MBP failed to boot up.

OS X :: Can Disk Utility Restore The New IMac?

Aug 16, 2010

I am now using a mid 2009 imac (i5 27") and will be getting the updated mid 2010 imac (15 27").

My question is; can I use a disk image of the 2009 imac and put it on the 2010 model to minimise the switching effort? I know some programmes will have to be reinstalled and I will need to unregister some things like Quark and iTunes.

Is it true that you have to make the disk image while the system has started up with the OS X DVD?

CCC warns that the image it makes will not be bootable. Can Disk utility restore the new iMac from it?

OS X :: Disk Utility Not Working / Boot Disk Not Working?

Nov 26, 2008

I have an 8 month old MB, 2.4 Ghz, 4GB Ram, 160 GB HD, running 10.5.5. I normally do the updated from Apple when the updates come out.

Anyway, I was trying to reformat/erase an external hd; I didn't see the Disk Utility icon on my Dock. I had used Disk Utility before (last time was maybe a month or two ago).

Go into applications, see something called disk utility, but it has a different logo (a piece of paper with a pencil, brush and ruler in the shape of an A). I click on it, it jumps once and does nothing. I figure it needs to be reinstalled, but the DVD that came with the computer says I can't install OS X on this computer.

Aug 22, 2014

I've got a Transcend 8GB usb drive and i want to erase everything on it but i can't. I know that the best way to do this is the Disk Utility (Because Finder can't erase them too. When I drag and drop to the bin, it says "43 files cannot be deleted")

When i attempt to format, this message appears from disk utility: and also, another message appears at the same time.I just wanted to format my disk. But i can still see the content in the disk. But can't copy them to desktop.

IMac :: Disk Utility RAID Setup - Backing Up Data

Jul 11, 2010

I have a couple of questions regarding backing up my external drive. I've got a 2TB external drive with about 1.5TB of movies, Music etc. I've got another identical empty drive that I want to keep a backup of the first drive on. So my question is what is the best way of backing up this data? I thought of using disk utility(I'm running snow leopard 10.6.4 if that makes any difference) to created a mirrored RAID set. If I plug in the empty drive then create the RAID set will my first drive get wiped when the set is created? or with it leave the data on the first drive intact? Or should I just use something like crashplan to backup to the 2nd drive?

OS X :: IMac Running Out Of Disk Space?

Nov 7, 2010

My iMac has currently 40 GB out of 500GB left.

I have a 500GB external drive that has my Time Machine backup on.

What options do I have?

Most of my data is music & films. In Finder I like the way I can click Movies and there they all are.

My only option I can think of is to use my external drive as a place to put more films etc. Then buy a 1TB external drive and then somehow get Time Machine to backup both disks.

Would I lose the ability in Finder to click Movies and it show all Movies? I assume so because it can't look at 2 discs to find a folder I guess.

Are there any other options available?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: IMac A1225 Crash Running AHT Then Goes Into A Boot Loop

May 1, 2012

I have an iMac A1225 EMC2211 that is exhibiting some weird behaviour. After about 5 minutes of using it (cold boot) it will either have a kernel panic, freeze and go into a blue (bondi blue I think) screen, or shut down. I ran an extended AHT on it and after 10 minutes it shuts down (black screen) then goes into a boot loop (screen stays black and system chimes once every 2 seconds). If the system is warm it will not boot (goes to blank grey screen). The consol reports something with the NVRAM (havent had the ability to post the log yet).

IMac (Intel) :: Powers Down While Starting In Safe Boot Mode Running OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Sep 9, 2014

My 2014 21" iMac powers itself down after about 10 seconds while trying to startup in safe boot mode. I'm not even sure why it is trying to start in safe boot mode. I shut it down after a power outage while plugged into an APS UPS. I'm guessing that since I interrupted the auto shutdown it is restarting in safe boot mode. Either way, I get a grey screen with a big apple and a progress bar. The progress bar gets to about a tenth full and the power just shuts off.

I've tried starting up while holding the alt key to select the Macintosh HD. The same thing happens.

IMac :: How Can I Boot From The Upgrade Disk Inside XP?

Oct 22, 2010

So I have XP installed on my 27" iMac, and that's is cool news. I also have a windows 7 professional upgrade disk, that bootcamp won't recognize. I would just blow away that partition and put 7 on. I don't care for any of my data on the XP install, I just want to get 7 on there with an upgrade disk.

How can I boot from the upgrade disk inside XP? Or is there another way?

If I try and install from inside XP it tells me it can only be done (configuration sets) from Windows PE (Preinstall enviroment)

as in I need to be booted from the disk.

How do I accomplish this? I also have a 2009 late iMac, which means that the video drivers don't work out correctly, but I already remedied that with making the video driver usb drive that fixes the issue. I just need to figure out how to get to the point to install.
