OS X :: Is There An External HD That Is Compatible With Both Mac And PC

Nov 27, 2009

I'm planning on buying an external hard drive soon. I browsed through the forums and I saw a couple threads discussion about external HDs. My question is, is there an external HD that you can read/write on a Mac AND a PC? I know formatting to FAT32 is one way of doing it, but I was just wondering if there are any HDs out there that doesn't need formatting for you to be able to read/write on a Mac and a PC.

Mac Pro :: External RAID Compatible With Vista And OS X?

Sep 11, 2010

Looking for some specific but simple advice on buying a raid. If you could teach or share your thoughts, but fair warning I am not a tech and get easily confused. But seriously, port multipliers, pci card bottle necks, quad eSata ports, enclosures with raid and esata interface, pci-x? raid and port multipliers, hardware/software raids? What cables go where.

My specific needs and specs:
I am looking for a fast drive configuration for use with my Intel 2008 macPro (Haprertown) OS: osx and windows vista.
Needs to be compatible with both operating platforms.
External solution please, the raid will be used with one box and will not need to be shared with other computers.
Used for Video editing and high-resolution image sequence playback.
I am looking to reach up to 300mbs if I have the budget, but that speed requirement might be too expensive for me, I am not sure?
No redundancy or security required, everything is non critical.
I will only need to run Raid 0
I do not want to do internal storage.
To help with cost, I can get away with 250-500gigs, as space is not necessary. Think, speed, speed, speed.
Price, Can I do this for $450?

The homework I have done thus far:
The SSD drives are perfect for me but the price point is a little pricy when I can do similar speeds for less cash. Unfortunately I have ruled out SSDs. I think I am going the way of an eSata raid, just don't know how to configure something close to 300mbs? Do I do a pci raid card? Do I build a raid and buy a card? External, High speed Raid 0, no redundancy,(300mbs). Low storage capacity (to drive down cost for me if it is relevant?) Compatible with my Intel mac pro OSX Harpertown dual quad. Disk solution can be formatted to be used for either OS (vista or osx).

IMac :: 56k External Modem Compatible With Mac OS 8.5?

Jan 27, 2010

I got called out to a support job the other day and found the lady had an iMac G3 Bondi Blue running Mac OS 8.5. The problem is with her internal 56k modem. It will no longer connect to the Internet and is reporting the error message:
"The modem is not responding properly. Reset the modem, check it's connections, and check that the correct port and modem type are selected in the modem control panel."

Now I'm no expert with the old school iMac's but that seems to me like the modem is knackered and she needs a new one. I did recommend just opening it up and slotting in a replacement internal modem but the client would rather have an External.

So I was wondering if any one around here knew what kind of modem I could purchase for her that would definitely be compatible with such an old version of Mac OS?

I have had a google around for it, but I can't seem to find a Hardware Compatability List or a modem that claims it is compatible with Mac OS 8 so I'm kind of grasping at straws here hoping that someone might happen to be using such an old version and might be able to point me in the right direction.

Hardware :: Seagate External Hard Drives Mac Compatible?

My local Mediamarket (in Germany) has them on offer and I was gonna buy my girlfriend one to back up her photo collection. But the sales assistant told me they are not compatible with Macs. Given that Mediamarket staff are renowned for being clueless, I was hoping somebody could elaborate on potential compatibility issues? The box does state FOR PC on the front, and only lists Windows OS in the system requirements but the Seagate website contradicts this and says Mac OSX 4.8 upwards will work.

Hardware :: Mac Compatible TV Tuners?

Jan 25, 2009

I recently got myself a 22" screen, and having used it for a while feel that it is of a good size to double as a casual TV, so I thought I would look into buying a TV tuner for my Mac. Doing a little research I find the following solutions which are marked as working with the Mac (supporting ATSC):

- EyeTV Hybrid ($149.95) [url=http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/hybrid09/product1.en.html[/url]

- VisionTek TV Wonder 650 Combo USB ($99.99) link

- Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950 link

- TubeStick ($99.95) link

I have also come across some receivers which are marked as supporting either only Windows, or Windows and Linux, at a lower price on eBay (see here, such as the

- AnyTV ($59.98) link

In this case I am curious whether anyone has found any software solutions on the Mac that allow these tuners to be used. If you have which "Windows only" tuners were you able to use and what software did you use?
