IMac :: 27" Display No Longer Huge
May 22, 2010
I remember when the late 2009 iMacs debuted and I went to the Apple Store to check them out. At the time, I thought the 21.5" was just the right size, while the 27" was monstrously large. I had a couple friends try to talk me out of the 27, saying that it was simply too big for home use.
Fortunately, I let the nerd in me out and got the 27. And after only a week of using it, the size no longer impressed me the way that it used to. Suddenly 27 was only normal, while the 21.5 became miniscule. Which made me think, just how big can desktop displays go before they're really "too big"? 30? 34? 40?
Is there even such a thing as "too big"? Or will we just adapt to the larger size like we've been doing all these years?

I'd be interested in hearing what people are doing about backup with their huge iMac drives. Time Machine needs a drive somewhat bigger than their iMac HD, but not many of us want to shell out $500+ for 4T backup drive. I've been thinking of partitioning the iMac and backing up only one, smaller volume via Time Machine. Anyone else doing that?

I currently have a 2007 20" IMac the specs are 2.0ghz 4 gb ram 240 gb hd. While this machine does run all my programs it does so with a lot of lag. I have a huge itunes library (90 GB) and an even bigger iphoto collection. (Over 70,000 8mp photos). The issue is when I launch iphoto it takes awhile to launch (60 seconds plus) the same issue with itunes (30 seconds to load album artwork ect.). Don't get me wrong its not unbearable just not as snappy as I would like.
The question is will the top end 2009 IMac be a worthy upgrade or should I wait 1 more year. I would hate to spend 2400 dollars for something thats not noticeably faster. I tried the new IMac in best buy and it felt really zippy however they have like 90 photos and 15 songs in itunes. Is it just me or do these apps really slow down when you throw a ton of files at them. Anyways I am starting to ramble.

I had not used my external monitor in the last several weeks. I believe there have been a few OSX Lion updates since the last time I used the external monitor. I had installed all the updates prior to connecting my external monitor again. However, a few days ago I tried to connect the external monitor and all I get is a "No Signal" message on my external monitor. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI works on my LCD TV, so I know the MDP works. I have also replaced the MDP-to-DVI cord and the external display still doesn't work.
I connected the external monitor to another computer running Snow Leopard and the external monitor works. So, the external monitor does work.
I have seen a few posts aboout this, but nobody seems to have a solution that works or is directly on point to my issue. I have tried to use all the scenarios for plugging in the external monitor and external monitor power. I tried to reboot the laptop with and withoout the external monitor connected. Same thing with the exteernal monitor plugged in and no power, etc. Nothing works. I have tried to repeatedly turn the external monitor on and off while connected to the MacBook. Again, that doesn't work. Here is what I am running:
MacBook, Aluminum 13" Late 2008
OSX 10.7.3
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
Info:
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I bought a 23" used HD Cinema display the other day along with the ADC-DVI and DVI-Mini Display adapters. I had it hooked up and it was working perfectly for 3 days. Today my wife tried to connect her Macbook accidentally via the USB that is part of the ADC-DVI adapter which didn't work (why is that USB there anyway?). Then when she went to connect the external display back to my Macbook Pro it did not wake up after being connected.
I have tried resetting the PRAM on the MBP and have disconnected and re-connected all connections but nothing will get the display working with the MBP anymore. When I connect and disconnect the mini-display plug into the MBP the MBP flashes the blue screen as it appears to be reacting, but that's it. I can't detect any display when I go into the display system preferences. Does anyone know how I can get the Apple Cinema display working again?

So my old 15" early 2006 Macbook Pro (1,1) no loger recognizes the primary display. I can use an external monitor just fine, but when I go into System Profiler, it's like my primary display disappeared. I reinstalled Snow Leopard, reset PRAM, NVRAM, repaired my permissions, tried to update my mac, but litterally nothing I have tried has worked.
It started when I tried to install both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. After completing the Windows 7 installation, I restarted my computer and it just hung on the Apple logo. I could feel the fans begining to spin really fast and it felt like my laptop was on fire. I restarted my computer, let it cool down, and it hung at the Apple logo again. I rebooted it a final time, and nothing. Black screen. No backlight or image...nothing.

The title says it all really... Quite a simple problem that I can't find any answer to!
I've hooked up my 30" Apple Cinema Display to the new iMac 27" and the highest resolution I'm getting as an option is 1280x800... The iMac correctly detects the ACD as a Cinema HD display but limits my resolution. Why oh why?!

i am having a weird problem with my brand new imac.. I bought it custom made last friday with ATI Radeon HD 4850. Now here is my issue.. Every time i boot up it takes a while for the screen to turn on. I hear the start up sound and HDD working and all that but screen stays off for another 5+ sec. before finally going grey before apple logo comes up. Now I thought this isn't an issue since i did order it with ATI card instead of standard Nvidia. Figured different cards react differently. However, later on after playing a game for few hours and doing a restart it would do the same thing, but the screen would never turn on. Just stay black forever until i shut it down and wait a minute or two then power it back on. So to clear this up. What happens is, i push power button, start up sound happens, then black.... like it is off, not even the back light. This only happens every few days, not every restart.. I reset SMC, PRAM, ran hardware test, spoke with apple on phone, went to genius bar, and after all that and being passed around now the apple engineers are looking into my problem and i am expecting a call back from them. So i guess my question is, is there anyone else with this setup (ATI Radion) that has this issue?

Just wondering if anyone could help me figure this out.
I have my 40" flat screen plugged into my imac via VGA cable to mirror the image.
I'm just trying to have the imac display sleep while I play a movie full screen through the external TV.
I've tried two different ways but both have failed.
1-I set up a hot corner in the imac to sleep display but this results in both the display and the TV sleeping.
2-I just set the power settings to sleep after 1 minute. This works but then If a movie is playing the computer won't go to sleep.

Purchased a brand new 27" i7 imac a few weeks ago, display is awesome!!! I was using my old 28" LCD monitor from my PC and running dual displays on the iMac. The 28" LCD monitor annoyed me a bit because i could not get the same color/crispness/brightness that i got from the iMac. ( also it has a Matt screen and i am more into the glossy screens ) So i found a used 24" cinema display locally. Paid 600.00 and it came with 2 yrs of AppleCare. It is only 7 months old ( still have 5 months under orignal warranty ) Got home, hooked it up and it had a "hint" of yellowness to it, It wasn't a exact image of my iMacs display...I tried to calibrate it also, but it still had just a HINT of yellowness....Nothing at all major, but enough for me to be annoyed with it.

I just purchased a 23" monitor to replace my iMacs 17" display (since it has a nasty crack in one of the corners). I hooked it up fine and all, but the displays are linked, allowing me to hover the mouse to the iMac's display which I find annoying most of the time.
Is there a way to make the iMac display zone out and just use the external by itself?

As you can tell by the thread title I've got one of the latest model iMacs and I'm running an LED Cinema Display as a second monitor. When it gets to the late hours I like to watch some movies on the Mac so I figured the Cinema Display would be a nice addition to do the job.
Now here's my issue: if it's late and I'm watching movies I tend to not have any lights on, but having one of the displays on means having both of them on, what I'm wondering is if it's possible to sleep one display while allowing the other to stay active so I can watch the movie without the light from the other one distracting

I'm interested in the new iMac but could not work with a glossy display. Can anyone share their experiences of using the iMac with an external display? In one respect it seems like a waste to have two monitors but the base model costs little more than the maxed out Mini and seems like the better option.
I would be interested in seeing photos of any setups featuring the iMac and an external display.
Also, is there a way to turn off the iMac display when using an external display?

None of the issues discussed in the apple support page on this issue seem to apply to me (except one below regarding not completing the 'prepare for backup'). It still takes way too much time (a night is not enough) to prepare for time machine backup, even though there was a backup recently, and it is not a one-time event but a recurring problem, and there are no big changes to my files or disks. And of course because most days it does not complete the backup before I have to leave to work, the condition on 'not interrupting the backup' cannot be respected. This looks like plain poor design. The only thing that helps is to connect my laptop directly to the Time Machine by Ethernet but it is very inconvenient.

I'm connected directly to internet, no firewall, static IP. I can see in little snitch some local computers. Wonder if I'm safe with OSX ? kernel_task process was so high, it attracted my attention

Recently, my iMac (Intel Core) started to slow down the longer I use it. Applications take ages to launch. Sometimes even opening a folder takes a long time. I have to force quit more and more times. I also have to literally pull out the plug when it just hangs. this is especially bad when it wakes up after I put it to sleep mode.
Is this a RAM issue? I'm running on 4GB RAM.

but there all in.

Does this mean that the GPU is no longer soldered to the motherboard and can be upgraded like any other graphics card? If so, why no options for GPU on the online store?

During installation, my graphics got all screwed up. You can see a screenshot of what's going on at this link: [URL]. I'm actually writing on the defective computer, so it's hard for me to see what's in the screenshot. Here's what I did so far. I tried removing half of the RAM first, then the second half, the problem persist. I rebooted on a different system, it's still there (so not software). I tried Hardware Test utility, it says everything is fine. I unplugged the Video Card, cleaned it a little along with the connectors, nothing. It happened DURING the update to 10.4.11 (not after I rebooted). I'm pretty sure I can take screenshots of it, so it's not simply in the connectors to the monitors. It happens on both my monitors (also when I unplug one of them).

PowerMac G5 Radeon 9800 Pro
Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Apple.com states that snowleopard is 64bit? And that because it is 64-bit it can run huge amounts of ram? Does this mean my Intel IMac (white) can run more then 3gb ram if I get snow leopard? or will I still be limited to the 3gb cause of my hardware?

New to the forum and unfortunately with a problem. Just got a new Mac Pro 8 Core over the weekend and Im having unusually high number of Kernel Panics (more in a couple of days then I have for the past 10 years with my other macs). I have tried to see if anything in particular causes it (ie Programs that cause the crash, time intervals, etc) and nothing can be ruled as the cause at least not that I can notice. It has happened wile using PS (CS4), Aperture, Google Earth, Safari and just in sleep mode. Here is one of the Kernel Panics along with system info. ps. The Mac started kernel panics before I loaded two additional hard drives and the wireless card (pci express).
