IMac :: Zero Disk Before Install To Prevent Freezes?
Aug 27, 2010
I've had ongoing problems with my iMac freezing, especially during iTunes playback, but otherwise random. No console errors or crash report to go on. I tried a fresh install several times, but the problem was still there. Also tried disk repair etc. I happened to try a defrag tool and it completely screwed my filesystem. As a result I had to do a proper format (zero the disk) before reinstalling. The freezing has now stopped! So if you're getting random freezes for no apparent reason, try zeroing the disk before reinstalling. Perhaps some disks weren't formatted properly before shipping in new Macs? The iMac is a Core 2 Duo 3.06 24-Inch (Early 2008)
I got tiger install discs for my emac but I cant get it to run the install. I tried putting the disc in and clicking the restart button on the screen that says "Welcome to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger", but when I click it it just restarts my computer and does nothing. I then tried the alternate install it did the same thing it did nothing but restarted my eMac. I then tried restarting my computer while holding c key nothing once again. Then I tried holding down apple, option, f , and o keys and then typed in cd boot and also tried cdrom boot nether of them worked so i restarted and tried dvd boot/dvdrom boot nothing worked on all the occasion i got a grey screen with a circle with a line through it. What do I need to do to get these install discs to work?
I just purchased a new iMac and used Boot Camp 2.0 to install Windows XP on a partition. Unfortunately, when I went to use the OS X disk that came with the iMac to install the drivers, the disk was damaged. I am already in the process of getting a replacement disk.
My question is: I have a new Macbook and the OS X disk that came with it. Can I use this OS X disk to install Boot Camp 2.0 on my iMac?
i have read various threads about this but can't find a cure, here is what's happening:
1) Was running disk utility and said i have a corrupted disk 2) OSX runs fine but i can't reboot into startup disk in order to repair disk 3) Can only boot into OSX now by holding down Option key and selecting OSX 4) Can't use this method to boot into install disk or external drive.
Remedies, I have done the following:
1) Repaired permissions 2) SMC reset 3) PRAM reset 4) Wont allow me to safe boot 5) Won't allow me to boot from install disk 6) Won't install SL disk to try and repair install
I have a 2007 imac which i want to restore/erase the hard drive so it's like its out the box. I have the orignial Install DVDs but when i put them in they won't run because i get the powerpc is no longer supported message. I upgraded to lion but no longer have the disk for it..Any Ideas how i can restore?
While I was partitioning my disk, disk utility froze, along with my whole system. So I was forced to reboot. Now my Mac thinks there's an 80 gb chunk of data somewhere (the data that would have been my partition), but I can't find it. How do I regain the lost space?
I searched for a while trying to find the answer but did not find it. I just installed Vista Business via Bootcamp. I am not able to access the internet or anything. If I read the help stuff right I need to use the OSX install disk to install the drivers. The problem is, I don't have the install disk. Is there any other way to get the drivers? Or am I just missing something easier?
I have an ibook Power pc g4 with 1.25gig of ram and 10.3.9 os.
I want to change the os to Leopard 10.5 and can get as far as clicking on the icon to install...waiting for the machine to reboot ...and that is all I do....WAIT
The machine shows a spinning wheel and clunks and clicks while the disk is being read.
after 20 minutes of this all goes quite but the little spinning wheel keeps spinning..
I have tried to hold down the c key the option key and just did a plain old reboot with the disk in the drive..
I've used the disk repair utility and repaired successfully. My book is still frozen at the logo and spinning cog. I have to hit the power button to shut down - And the hard drive gets super heated. What else to do?
I have a dual 2ghz G5 that i wanted to clean off and start fresh. I wiped the drive with disk utility and tried to install os from tiger install dvd. G5 keeps hanging at install and also at disk utility. I've swapped both the osX install dvd disk and the entire dvd drive, but still hangs at os load or utility.
I naively tried to install leopard OS on my 5-year old ibook G4 (with very little RAM). It makes a horrible clicking sound from the dvd drive and freezes on the screen that says its looking for OS 10.4(?) (which is not on the computer). When I reboot it immediately starts the install process, because the dvd is still stuck in the drive, and freezes over & over again.
All I want to do is remove the disc and go back to the original OS, so that I can add more RAM and update the OS properly. (The only motive for the update is so that I can have the same version of Garageband 2008 on both my desktop and laptop so I can work with the files interchangably.)
Is there a way to restart the computer that bypasses the install disc and dosen't default into the install porocess?
Just updated to OS Lion and upon reboot after install it froze. How do I restart without doing a hard shutdown/restart? I have never encountered a freeze with any apple product, what gives.
Searched the archives but no luck so far. My old PB G4 is running 10.4.11. When I installed the OS, I chose not to install iPhoto and iMovie because I didn't think I'd need them on this machine. I'd now like to add them, but am not sure how to do it without wiping the hard drive and starting completely from the beginning. There's got to be an easier way...right?
I need to do repair my disk on my 10.6.4 machine but am wondering if I can do so with my 10.5 Install DVD or if I need to wait until I get home and do it with my 10.6 upgrade dvd?
While trying to pepair permissions systom freeze up. So I put in the startup disk hit restrat holding down c and tried to repair permissions that way and it froze up that way too. I had to manually turn off machine.
I have recently done a Time machine back up of my MB Pro 15" then wiped my hard drive trying to clean it up so I could install Windows 7 with Boot Camp. I had my original Install Disk which I forgot was Tiger, Having used one of my brothers company licenses to upgrade to Leopard but that disk is now with him in another country. So now I can not restore from my Time Machine backup. I have a Leopard Install disk for a Macbook Pro 13" which I also own. Is it possible to use this disk to re-install Leopard on my 15"?
Because of the many problems I heard about using FCS3 with Snow Leopard when they both first came out, I've held off upgrading my OS from 10.5.8. Now that some time has passed, is it safe to install Snow Leopard without worrying about freezes and crashes with using Final Cut Studio 3? Also, have most of the 3d party software developers updated their apps for 10.6? I'd like to install Snow Leopard for my other apps but not at the expense of FCS.

I have a newer iMac 24" bought in 11/2007. I have the mini-dvi to vga converter and when I connect it to a external tv capable of 1024x768, the iMac freezes and does nothing. I disconnect and the screen turns blue and the flickers back on and everything works. I have made the connection then booted up, and I have tried every resolution all the way down to 640x480, same thing it just locks up the screen, but again as soon as I unplug the mini-dvi to vga cable from the iMac it flicks to a blue screen and everything comes back. I have reviewed dmesg nothing, and revieiw /var/log/messages. Is there any troubleshooting I can do. I am old school unix/linux guy just converted my family to Apple and would like to use the display on my tv to watch my iTunes movies.
I have used Time Machine to backup my data on an external hard drive with ample space for the past year. However, for the past month or so when plug in my hard drive and try to back up my files using Time Machine, it completely freezes my computer, to the point where I need to hold down the power button for 10+ seconds and completely restart. At first I thought this might be due to not enough RAM, but discovered it does this even if all other programs are closed.
I purchased my Macbook Pro just over a year ago with Tiger as the OS. Since then i have purchased leopard with a buddy and installed it on my computer. And lent my Tiger OS install disk to a friend of mine. Im trying to partition my disk with bootcamp but it errors and tells me to fix it using the Disk Utility.
I have a Snow Leopard Install Disk for the 13-inch Macbook Pro model.I also have a 21-inch iMac. I have OS X Lion installed on both. I have Snow Leopard installed as a partition on my Macbook Pro, which I installed via the install disk. I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.
I been having disk error with the 2TB disk in my new 27" imac The errors looks like this:Verifying volume ?Macintosh HD?Performing live verification.Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.Checking extents overflow file.Checking catalog file.Missing thread record (id = 1336149)Incorrect number of thread recordsChecking multi-linked files.Checking catalog hierarchy.Invalid volume directory count(It should be 197788 instead of 197789)Checking extended attributes file.Checking volume bitmap.Checking volume information. The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
I recently received an iMac as a "gift"... turns out it has some problems. I am unable to reinstall the default OS (Mountain Lion) because I have yet to be able to partition the HDD correctly. The error I keep getting is:Â Partition failed with the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed. At this point, the default Macintosh HD isn't showing, so it must of been erased/deleted.Â
When I get my Mac Mini next week-I intend to replace the HardDrive, do I have to back up what's on the HDD? Remember this Mac is Brand New-And comes with the Install Disc.
Or can I just open the box, install the new harddrive and load up the install disk?
Every time I try to restart my computer on my Hard Drive I get this message "Startup disk could not gather enough information on the selected disk". As of right now I am running my whole computer off of a 16GB flash drive that is quickly running out of memory. How do I fix my Hard Drive without losing all 150GB worth of data. I am running off of OS X 10.6.8 and have another iMac that is working fine. Â
I have a 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with Snow Leopard. It is completely up-to-date and has always ran beautifully. I have not installed any new programs lately. Recently, when I go to APPLE > Restart (maybe after an update or just because I like to restart my computer on occasion) the bar at the top disappears, my dock stays up on the screen, and the computer just sits there and freezes up on me. I am forced to hold down the button on the back to get my computer back. Here are the things I have tried:Re-install of the latest update using Combo Update Reset PRAM Repaired Permissions Booted from disk and ran a Repair Disk Complete zero-out of the HD, clean install of Snow Leopard, and reinstallation of everything from a Time Machine backup Nothing has worked...The other problem is that it only happens when my computer is on for several days. If I restart daily, it doesn't happen. So, it makes it hard for me to log-in as a different user for that long to initiate the problem. I think it has something to do with a program that I may open and close throughout the week but I have no way to pinpoint what program it is.
