View 3 RepliesI have currently XP installed in Boot Camp and I have Vmware fusion installed in OSX. I can boot my XP partition via vmware fusion. Now the question is, when I boot the XP via vmware, I can boot from a Win 7 DVD and the installation starts. Can I just go on an install it in this way? The thing is that I'm not at home and only have a VNC session to my mac, so I can't install it in the classic way which requires a reboot
View 2 Replies View RelatedNot sure if I should get vmfusion or parallels to run windows 7 on.
They both seem to be as good so I guess I am shallow enough to go for the best looking.
I will trial both with windows 7.
Can I do that with a single license copy of W7?
BTW I read very thread on ag v glossy and small text problems with hi res and worried for weeks!
As a 63 yr old with glasses for short sightedness (and a short temper) I am delighted with my 15 inch hi-res ag!
I have Windows 7 running on a separate disk on my Mac Pro.
A Bootcamp drive and System Reserved drive mount in OSX.
Fusion fails to preprocess the bootcamp partion... and it fails to start.
Any suggestions on how to get this working?
Would it be possible to install Windows (7) for BootCamp from a USB Flash Drive instead of burning it to a DVDROM?Installing Windows (Vista) from a Flash Drive [URL]is possible and potentially faster than installing from DVD or ethernet. I'm assuming this should work for Windows 7 as well.So the question that remains is if BootCamp can boot? install from? USB. (I've never tried BootCamp, so I'm not familiar with the process of even starting an install.)

Or should I get the combined one?

View 9 Replies View RelatedLast night I installed VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 on my Unibody MBP running SL. When I use Fusion, my computer slows to a crawl. I spent a few hours getting Windows set up and installing software last night.
I would like to try using Boot Camp instead, but do not want to lose all of the software and files that I have installed. Is it possible to set up Boot Camp, and keep the same Windows setup?
I'm having pretty bad difficulties with Windows 7 and Parallels Desktop. I know it's not supported yet, but some folk have it working. I can boot up, but I can't install Parallels Tools. I changed the Configuration to "Windows 2008 Server" like someone suggested in another forum, but fails to boot up.
Seems like VMWare are offering a better helping hand than Parallels Desktop - and while it is not supported yet by them, they say that if you use Windows 2008 Server Config everything works apart from sound.
So am I best giving it a bash with VMWare's Fusion? 30-day trial for free. But I'd rather try get Parallels working since I paid for it.
i just installed windows 7 on my mac last night over my vista partition, but now my avg firewall was disabled to i had to reinstall avg, got that fixed, but my next problem is vmware fusion. it just doesnt work, it boots into windows 7 but then i get the blue error screen saying something like windows has shutdown due to a blah blah blah...anyway i need this fixed right away, do u guys know how to fix it or know any alternatives besides parallels?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'll like to install Mac OS 10.4.6 in VMWare Fusion for stuff that I need to use 10.4 in. How might I do that? I've noticed they support 10.5 and 10.6 server but why not client? and why not 10.4 intel?
I have the install disks with me, if I need to make an iso or cdr of it, I know how.
Before you ask, I had found some old games a few months ago that I wanted to play for nostalgia sake, so I made some Windows 95 and 98 virtual machines. It was pretty easy actually, since I just used Disk Utility to create images of the install discs. VMWare had a nice guide on their site that helped me get networking setup properly also.
But then I got to thinking, it'd be pretty fun to try and get Windows 3.1 up and running as well. I was able to make images of some MS-DOS 6.22 install disks and got that installed just fine. My problem actually comes when trying to install Windows itself. I was able to get the install files from 2 different sources. The first was just a folder of ALL the install files from 6 different disks, and the second was 7 different ZIP files from 7 different disks. I tried creating a single image from the first source, and 7 different images from the 7 unzipped folders from the second source, but on both attempts I'm unable to access the A: drive in DOS to start the setup. It gives me an error message about reading from the drive, followed by the standard "Abort, Retry, Fail?"
Has anybody else tried to get a Windows 3.1 virtual machine up and running and come across this problem? I even tried Googling for the exact lists of files contained on the 6 disks from my first source in order to try and split those up and make the necessary images, but unsuccessfully.
Is it possible or do I have to install windows 7 through bootcamp for the xp virtualization to work?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would appreciate some advice on an upgrade path for my Mac Mini. I have a 1.83GHz Mini with 80gb hard drive and 1GB memory. I'm using it for a HTPC and it has worked out well for this purpose. I recently tried to install Vista/Fusion on the Mini and found it to be so slow as to be unusable. Having used Vista and Fusion on my 2.2Ghz MBP with 4GB memory, I guess the memory is what is causing the problem since on MBP it works well. I have 2GB (2 x 1GB) of memory that I pulled from the MBP which I figured I would put into the Mini when I finally got the nerve to attempt an upgrade. Is 2GB enough to run Vista with Fusion? Its free so I would prefer to use it instead of spending about $45 for 4GB of new memory. Since I will be opening the Mini I was going to change the hard drive. With my HTPC setup I have about 2TB of external storage and just wanted to put in a larger and possibly faster drive in the Mini while I do the upgrade. Would you recommend going to 7200rpm or just stick with 5400rpm? Is heat an issue with these drive that would cause the Mini's fan to run more often? I was looking at a WD 250GB 7200rpm drive. Another other recommendations are appreciated.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI currently run Fusion on my iMac but I really would like the try the new version of Parallels that came out this week.
Will I mess anything up by installing the demo version while still having Fusion installed? Of course I wouldn't run both at the same time, just have both installed.
I read that for gaming, Bootcamp is the way to go, but for other general Windows use, Parallels or Fusion is the way to go.
But for me, I am planning to play games - hence Bootcamp - as well as use Parallels/Fusion for general use, namely to use Microsoft Office Onenote (an unbeatable note-taking software that needs a Mac version yesterday).
Is this even possible and how much memory will the additional parallels take (I'm planning a 40gb bootcamp partition btw on a 250gb hard drive)?
I have an iMac 3.06 with 4G. The machine runs great and can't believe how nice it runs Windows 7 x64.The only reason I have Windows installed is for Quicken 2010. The odd behavior I'm experiencing is running the Quicken update to automatically download your Quicken portforlio, bank txns, and stocksOn Windows, this updates takes less than 1 minutes. However, on the Mac side is runs for several minutes. The weird thing is the progress meter for each one of the 3 update steps acts like it's get suspended. After 5 or 10 minutes I will close the update window even though it says it's not completed, reopen it and everything is where is last was, but indicates updates are complete.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a few questions and I just grabbed a 13in 2.4 alu (Yep Im a new switcher) First off, just wow on the Mac I love it to death coming from a PC, Its great to have something that doesnt feel like a plastic toy in my hands! So my goal is to Boot Camp Windows 7 + Mac OS X, I have yet to upgrade the RAM on my unit so its still at 2GB (waiting for my work to start carrying it) and Im also using Fusion 2.01. Now the Question x32 or x64? Which would run smoother under a Virtual Machine from within Mac. I know in Boot Camp 64 would be the obvious choice especially when I upgrade to 4GB but will Fusion pose more strain to the system emulating 64 or would it be no difference towards 32?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Vista 64-Bit installed via Boot Camp and was wondering if it was possible to then install Fusion with Windows XP because I have some older software which is made for XP.
So basically can I have Vista Boot Camped and Windows XP Fusion running on my Mac?
Has anyone has any luck getting this to work? If so, how? I can not get it going on my 2.66ghz 17" MBP becuase the graphic rating is 1.0 even after a re-test.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed VM Fusion and Windows XP (2) on my 13" MacBook I was told that I could exit Windows by selecting "suspend guest" from the drop-down menus, but when I do, I get a humungous "click triangle", and it sits there in the center of my screen until I click on it . . . . which boots up Windows again!
The only way I can close Windows is by going to the Fusion menu and selecting "shut down Fusion".
Also, I notice that I can't always activate or click on the Mac menu bar at the top of Windows to see those choices. In fact, when it does appear, it appears rather 'ghostly' and maybe only half of it appears - and is completely without function. When I jiggle the mouse pointer around awhile, it may appear, then I can shut down Windows.
I installed W7RC and VMware fusion did everything for me. I remember when I installed XP I had to put in my OSX disc to install drivers to make certain things work...? Do I need to put my OSX disc in with the RC and Fusion 2.0.5?
Everything seems fine but I'm not familiar enough with windows to actually know.
I have the Windows 7 RC .iso (it's 64bit, I should have that one, right? Macs are 64 bit not 32 bit?) file and I want to install it through my VMware fusion app. Please note, this is NOT the beta for Windows 7, it's the newer RC.
How in the world do I do this? Some online guides say to set it as Windows Server 2008 x64, others say Windows Vista 64.
Could someone take me through the process of installing it? Or link me to a video or proven article? Setup goes through usually but the next time I boot into Windows 7 it tells me there was an installation error and Windows could not find the startup disk.
