View 4 RepliesCould anyone here recommend an easy way to backup files, info, etc from a PC and then transfer them to a Mac? It's an 09 24" iMac if that makes any difference.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac and use a LaCie backup to, um, backup my files. I am confused over how to transfer my iTunes library from my backup into my MacBook Pro's iTunes library.
Information:
iMac
Mac OS X (10.5.5)
I've been a Mac user for about 2 years now. It's a great OS. I currently have a 2008 (quad-core) Mac Pro that I will be selling to a friend. I've been saving up some money and will be buying an iMac (with money from Mac Pro) and a Gaming PC with my saved money. My Mac Pro currently has three drives in it - a 230GB drive with the OS, Apps, Music, etc; a 500GB drive with Movies, Photos, etc; and another 500GB drive with Windows 7 and games.
I have all my Mac files backed up onto a 1.5TB external drive (of which I have less than 1TB filed). My question is about file transferring. Will I be able to transfer the files from my backup Mac Pro drive to the new iMac? It has a 1TB drive so space isn't a problem. I'm just kinda worried about how the files will be transferred since it was copied from two drives and is going to be copied back onto a single drive.
I recently sold my mini and my ministack, but before i did i took the last 4 time machine backups. I stored this image on my gf's imac, in hopes that when i got my new macbook i could restore everything i had on the mini onto the macbook. So, on her computer, i have xxxxx.sparseimage, i enabled sharing on her computer through a local network, and shared it. When i get on the network, i can drag the file to the desktop, go in and see all my stuff. Ive tried everything through the network to try and migrate it, with migration tool, but it'll just start migrating her computer. i have another external HDD, am i going to have to format it and move the backup to it, then from it to my macbook? can i get a bridged usb-usb cable and just yank it off her computer? does anyone know what im talking about?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been away from the Mac world for awhile (Got a Unibody Macbook 2.0 late last year but my girlfriend liked it so much I gave it to her. Been using a Windows Laptop ever since). I just got a Unibody Macbook 2.4 recently and wanted to restore it with my old Time Machine Backup (stored on my Time Capsule) that I made in December 08. Unfortunately, Migration Assistance on my new Unibody 2.4 can only see my GF's MB and Mac Mini backups.
I access the time capsule with Finder and see my time Capsule backup file, however. Is there some way to get it to "recognize" it? Or did it get "corrupted" somehow and I'm SOL? Not too big of a deal I suppose but definitely makes me a bit less trusting of Time Machine (I held it in high regards).
I have TM backing up to my external usb drive. Just curious but where and what's the folder called while TM is backing up? Is it called Backups.backupdb?

Not so much for Apple Software update, but when re-installing OS X after sometime, smaller programs like Perian or firefox install, then come up with an update. I like to keep the install files for my programs handy, and the usual method is to find the developer site and download the newest version, but when it updates itself, it downloads the new version, then automatically launches it.
I'd like to know where it downloads to so I can just take that file and store it, rather than having to go to the site all and re-download it. I've looked around but can't seem to find any place that it would go, so I assume it's some hidden temp folder or something. I remember on Windows it was some temp folder in the Windows system folder (at least for the Service packs and other WindowsUpdate items).
I'm manually moving files to a new hard drive and need the files for Dreamweaver CS4 so I don't have to setup new sites again. Are they in the User > Library > etc...? Or System > Library > etc...? I tried copying the user library Dreamweaver files but it didn't work. Just to be clear I'm not talking about the individual files for my site, I need the preference files? Not sure what they are called, .plist? The ones that will restore Dreamweaver with the correct directories and stuff.

I am having trouble accessing files with my brothers MBP (running latest v of leopard) from an external HD (FAT32 format) plugged into my iMac (also running latest leopard.) I have tried logging in as myself on the MBP, but all that appears is my main hard disk and my home folder.
It's very important that I have access to this drive!

Say you were downloading a file in Safari and the download process gets canceled, does the file discard itself or takes up space on your hard drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to locate an attachment file from a recently deleted message. The message is no longer in my trash, so I can't access the file through Mail. In the past, there was usually an archived copy somewhere on my hard drive, but it seems to have moved in my most recent update of Mac OSX. It used to be in the Library folder in my user folder, but now there is no Library folder in that location. Where do I find these files?

I have a hard drive that is in the process of dying and had to use Diskwarrior in order to rebuild the drive; luckily, it seems to have recovered my files.
I looked in Users/Library/Pictures to find my iPhoto Library file, however it doesn't seem to my newer photos that I imported into the library.
Is there a secondary/hidden location that the original files are stored in? Where exactly can I find them?
I had deleted my files from iTunes media folder, but as luckily I had the same files located in other place I just copied them to the iTunes Media but iTunes rejects to play them (in my iTunes Library). I'm only able to play them if I go through the procedure as followings: Play - "iTunes unable to open this file because the original file not found. Do you want to find it?" (or smith like that) - Find - Open and then it plays, but I have to perform these actions with every file separately and I have quite a lot of them. Oh, and after that first popping-up window the next one appears "Would you like iTunes to find other missing files from the same location as [the file's name]?" But when I click on "Find" it says "iTunes were unable to find other missing files". Why? How do I accomplish the same task but with all my albums at once without necessity to add them one by one? Does there some way exists to tie the tracks from my albums with original files without importing them to my iTunes library?

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive

I recently upgraded to OS 10.7 and now can't find my Time Capsule under devices to access individual files stored on it. The system is recognizing it under time machine and is doing full backups to it, but only the backup portion is accessible through Finder. How do I get back to where I can pull up the contents of the Time Capsule on an individual basis?

I'm banging my head against the wall with this problem. I have a new MBP 13", 4GB Ram, etc etc. When I transfer files across my network (or the office network), it will consistently fail to transfer a few of the files. For instance, I just tried to copy 50 photos to an SMB share on our server here at the office. The transfer window show the progress of 50 files, but when I look at the folder, there are only 48 files. Sometimes I get less, sometimes I get all 50. The same goes for my home network to an SMB share. I've confirmed this failure over N and G networks. The AP at home and the office are different models and I went as far as purchasing a new one for home since I thought it was the problem. Same results. Is there some hardware error going on here with my wifi card? Is there any way to test it? Are the SMB shares the problem?

I'm getting a new macbook. Currently I use time machine as a backup tool and was wondering if I should use it to transfer all my data to the new mac. One benefit of a new harddrive is the fresh install without all the junk that has built up over the years right? So wouldn't time machine just be transferring all the junk and stuff I want to the new mac? or is time machine smarter than this.

I had severe account troubles on Snow Leopard, and today, the Mac partition became corrupt and unreadable. I have a very recent Time Machine backup of that user account, but I don't want to transfer the account itself. Can I just transfer applications, documents, and settings, and not the account itself? And how do I do a clean install of Mac Snow Leopard onto a hard drive with a previous installation of the OS?

However when transferring AVI files from my Mac onto my USB stick it seems to transfer the whole file but when I try to watch it through quicktime or on TV it is unable to read the file. The thing is it is not happening to all my AVI files as some of them are able to be transferred to USB and work fine but then others are not working and I am not sure what the difference is. The AVI files all work fine on my Mac before I transfer them but something is breaking down when they are transferred.

I get the box asking for me to accept and it looks like it's transfering the files. But nothing happens. It just does that forever with nothing being transferred. Is there a setting I'm missing? Also, is it possible to transfer folders? In the past I could only do single files at a time.
