View 2 Replies View RelatedWhy does Mac OX 10.6.8 keep making copies of a file anytime I download, copy, or move a file? It will copy, dowload or move the file, then begin making copies until I reboot. This makes it impossible to deal wit hfiles unless I want to spend a lot of time rebooting after every time, then deleting all the redundant copies.

I just switched from a PC. All my backup (files, music, photos, etc) are stored onto a Windows-formatted HDNow i have error when i try to transfer them over
It gives me the error-36did a bit of research but none of the remedy worked (i.e. terminal>dos_clean)I have previously transferred files from the same external HD onto my macbook in which i purchased last year and don't recall having any problems. (although not all the files were transferred onto my macbook, only a few files in which i needed) What can be the alternatives for me to transfer all my files over onto my imac without having the reformat my external HD?
I've created an ISO file which I need to back up and keep safe. I have a couple on my macbook pro but due to the large file size, it's taking up alot of space on my hard drive. I tried to drag and drop this onto my external hard drive but when I attempted to move them, it came back with an error message saying it wasn't possible to do due to an error. I can drag and drop every other type of file but for some reason this wont want to work?
Note: The file itself ranges from 4.9GB - 8GB and I have about 200GB space on my portable hard drive.
I just got my first Mac which has Snow Leopard. I've been trying to backup files to an HFS+ extended formatted hard drive. This usually fails because there are files that give me an error code of -41. It's random files. I also believe this is affecting why Time Machine can't backup my filesAnyway I can't find a solution to the -41 error code issue.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've had an external hard drive for a while and occasionally had errors with it, but I just tried to back up a new batch of photos and I keep getting Error Code 36 - some data in the file is unable to be read or written. It doesn't matter whether I copy them as a group or individually, nothing's working. I even tried with a pages document to see if it was just photos, and NOTHING will copy - error every time. The drive is formatted in FAT32. It was originally in windows and I reformatted it using a windows program, no partitions. Originally I used it on a restricted mac that wouldn't let me install any software, so I've always just dragged-and-dropped files, which has worked fine until now.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Pro and suddenly it won't copy files from any external drive, or write them either. The drives mount and show up in fiinder, and they start copying, but after about 30 seconds they error out with "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 50).
It has done this on two different Mac Pros and 3 different external drives. I don't remember this haqppening before. I have Paragon NTFS running on both Macs and they have worked flawlessly for maqny months but now they won't complete.

I have my library on my iMac running Snow Leopard and iPhoto 09. I want to copy it to my MacBook Pro running the same. Whenever I try to copy it over, I get the following error after it copies a few MB worth:
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written. (Error code -36)
I have found a similar problem online that someone was having, but it was error code -30, and they didn't have a fix.
The one response I had was: 'alex try putting your mac os cd in and restart the system holding down the letter d key and let me know what happens.' unfortunately I can't find my system disc... will I need to buy a new one? here's a the problem: I have a PPC G5 iMac 2.1GHz, 1.5GB. The Internal Hard drive is 250GB in total and partitioned into 4 sections. After working fine for ages I suddenly found I can't copy files into one of the partitions. Initially I got an error message saying: "DS_store could not be tead or written. (Error code 36)" I used Disk Utility to clean up the hard drive. Which didn't help. Got a copy of Disk Warrior(4.1) to try a more effective clean up. There were a few errors that found and fixed, but i still got the same error message. Then found a utility called DS_Store Cleaner to try and force it to remake the DS_Store files. This got rd of the DS_Store message but I'm still left with another error 36 message and still unable to properly copy. The message then said: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "example file.doc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).
I have also got hold of a copy of techtool pro (4.6.1) and run everything - basic, intermediate and advance scans. Everything (aside from a few minor errors on other partitions - which it cleared up easily) was fine, that partition showed no errors at all. I didn't do the full tests on the system partition though as I haven't used the e-drive function yet. The problem has been ongoing since late March.Just today I found the same problem in another of my partitions: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "example file.doc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).This happens when trying to copy to either of those partitions or trying to save anything to either of them. What might be causing this and what should I do next? with the first partition to have problems I am unable to copy/write any file size (eg KB size files) with the most recent partition I found I could copy a 2.3MB Jpeg. The problem occured when I tried to copy a 680MB .mov file (there was enough space - about 1.8GB)
We use iMacs in the mac lab at our college. These are new this year and run leopard with FCP studio. When our students are trying to copy over footage/media from desktop to their ext hard drives they can't and are getting an error code 0 (zero). The imacs are formatted to work within our organizations network system however we aren't login onto that or working through the network when they are using them in the lab.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been pulling a folder with sub-folders from iMAC Desktop to a flashdrive so as to use on my Macbook when I travel. Suddenly after several months with no problems I am getting the msg "The Finder cant complete the operation because some data in * cant be read or written. (Error code -36)" The folder won't copy to flashdrive. I have checked flashdrive with Disk Utility, tried different flashdrive, to no avail. the only way I can move the folder is by moving sub-folders one by one and if they generate the same msg by moving their files one by one. I cannot move as a whole. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. It is possible that this commenced after installing an OS X update but i can't be sure.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.
Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).
Hope someone might be able to help. I am attempting to copy files from a USB attached to my iMac external hard drive to my new NAS drive system, which is connected through my Airport Extreme by gigabit ethernet.I know the NAS is using a file system that I do not recognize (its a WD ShareSpace, 4TB/3TB Raid 5 NAS), which could be causing the problem. Basically I am attempting to transfer all the files stored on the USB external to the NAS. When I copy all the files and paste them to the NAS through Finder, I get an error saying it could not be completed cause I have Insufficient Privileges to do so. There are thousands of files to go through, but I have pinpointed two folders that are causing the problem, which themselves have thousand of files.

I'm in the midst of backing up an external drive (to another external drive) via Firewire 800, which works fine, but for some strange reason one specific file won't be copied. It's an iDVD file with a filesize of 12.98 GB. All other files have been copied without any problems.
When copying over to the backup drive all seems fine for a while, then (after having copied 4.01 GB) I hear some "clunking" sounds from the source drive followed by the error message shown below. I've tried copying the said file several times and to different backup drives, and in all instances the file copying stops at 4.01 GB.
I've checked both drives with Disk utility and they check out fine. And the iDVD file opens fine in iDVD.
Could it be that MacOSX needs some free "work space" on one or several of the drives in question, which isn't available?
Cureently, the source drive has only 10.63 GB free space, the destination drive has 582 GB available and the computer's (1.67GHz Powerbook G4) internal 80 GB drive has 23 GB free space.
I'm having an issue copying from one external to another (I just recently got 1TB for x-mas). Both of the drives are western digitals, so they're very good. The problem I'm having is every time it gets to my iTunes music, I get this error:
You can't copy some of these items because their names are the same as other items on the destination volume, and that volume doesn't distinguish between upper - and lowercase letters in filenames.
I want to rip my old svcd and vcds onto my harddrive, my mac however cannot copy the .mpg files and I wanted to use VCD Copy to rip them. The program works but says it's finished after just one second and the created file has no content.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI did do a search on this problem, but i started a new thread b/c I think i may be having a slightly different issue...please hear me out..I have a Macbook, running Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4.11). I have had a 500 GB external HD (MyBook) hooked up to it (via USB) for the past 4 months or so, never really had any issues, was always able to transfer files, no problem. However, today i suddenly ran into some serious problems. I tried to transfer some pictures to the external drive and after copying 200 or so files it gave me an error, said a specific file could not be transferred (specifically it said "the Finder could not complete the operation because some data in "IMG_3435.JPG" could not be read or written. Error Code - 36 "). At first I thought maybe that specific file was corrupted or something but i checked it out and it looked fine. So I then I tried transferring another folder of pictures, and then I got the same error right away (after transferring 3 files), for a different file. And now i'm at the point where I can't transfer ANY files to my external HD anymore! (T_T). And it's weird, when i transfer folders, it will transfer the folder itself but not the files.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to recover from the popular iCloud mistake "Deleting the wrong calendar". I am able to locate the Folder located in the Library of my Time Machine backup, and when I attempt to "Restore to" "Desktop" I receive the following error:
This particular file name is actually located in one of the folders, in the Calendar Folders, and is just one of the many events I would like to restore to my calendar, and the copy operation aborts when I click OK. Each time I retry this a different .ics file is the issue.
Investigating file permissions reveals nothing pertinent that I can see, because I am not attempting to cross any boundaries e.g. I'm in the user account and searching in the same user account, I wish to import Calendar Folder to.

Earlier i posted to ask how can i format using SL upgrade disk. I came across a problem. I have a work .ISO image which is about 9 GB and i tried copying that to my External HD with 20GB free Disc space. I am not able to copy it. I tried searching for a program which will make it into an archive and split it (like WinRAR in PC) but wasn't successful.
