Software :: Finding OpenOffice 3.0 For Mac PPC?
Oct 15, 2008Does anyone know if this was released as a final version in English? The last non-final release I can find for PPC Macs in English was the rc4. Strangely, the OpenOffice website lists a v 3.0 in Swedish for download but not in any other language. It's also listed in German but that's really v 2.4.1.

MacBook Pro :: Using Firefox And Openoffice, The CPU A Is 49 To 50c?
Mar 19, 2009I been really curious about the temperature of my computer. Recently, I downloaded istat pro just to see the stats of my computer. I noticed that temperature is kind of high. For example, when I am using firefox and openoffice, the CPU A is 49 to 50c. I don't know if this is normal or not.
Also, when I use vmware fusion for windows xp, the temp for CPU A gets around 69 to 71c. Is this completely normal?
Here are the stats of my unibody macbook pro:
2.4ghz
2.0 GB of RAM
250gb of hard drive
15 inch

Nov 13, 2008My wife has a Macbook Air, and has no other problems with any other software. However, using OpenOffice 3.0, when using the Word clone, it will intermittently freeze and require killing the whole openoffice app. NeoOffice also had a similar problem, but it happened much less frequently. Should I just move her to MS Office 08?

Nov 29, 2009The only things that are absolutely essential - I need to maintain perfect compatibility with .doc files that contain a lot of tables and images, and I need to be able to work with Japanese language documents. I've tried Google docs but the spacing in my tables and the font sizes are usually off. Will [URL] be like that?
The last time I tried Openoffice was around the version 1.0 stage. Has it come a long way? I remember dealing with X11 installs and Windows 95 icons/toolbars and if that's how it still is, I'll probably just go the Microsoft route. Has anyone tried Openoffice recently that can let me know how the UI has progressed.

I've reached the point where I think it's time to finally wean myself from Classic applications (and data file formats) that I currently use on my old PowerMac g4 (still running 10.3.9).
I have both a white intel iMac and a new MacBook Pro which (of course) don't run Classic (at least not without a lot of haggling with Sheepshaver, etc.), and the g4 is 6+ years old and can't last forever.
I'm looking at iWork but it looks like a mess compared to AppleWorks, which I've used for years (I also still use an OLD copy of Microsoft Works running under Classic to maintain some databases that go as far back as 1987!). And iWork doesn't even contain a database module (granted, Filemaker Pro exists for that -- but for my usage, it's overkill).
I've downloaded and am experimenting with both OpenOffice and NeoOffice. They look very similar.
Applications :: Converting OpenOffice File To Pages Or Word?
May 27, 2009One of my editors had starting using OpenOffice and when he sends files to me they arrive in a zip that, when opened has some games and other things and one png file that is a thumbnail of the document, very tiny.
Is there a converter for OpenOffice docs that will open them in Pages (my preference) or Word ?
Any familiar with OpenOffice? Is it necessary to receive a zip file every time from him? He's technically inept and perhaps I can just tell him how to export the proper file.

Sep 23, 2010I've done a lot of research about the older USB iSub (which I have) not working with Snow Leopard and Intel Macs (which I also have). I tried the iMic work-around, but it did not work for me. Any tips? Maybe I'm missing a step...
So anyway, the newer iSub as paired with the HK Soundsticks works fine w/Intel Macs since it uses the industry standard 3.5mm mini-jack.
I was wondering if anyone has considered converting the guts of the older USB iSub to use the 3.5mm mini-jack instead?
I have a crappy speaker/subwoofer combo that uses the 3.5mm mini-jack where the subwoofer volume is controlled at one of the speakers. It looks pretty easy to pull the guts from the crappy subwoofer and see if it will drive the iSub. A bit of a kludge I admit, but it's possible w/o permanent damage to the iSub.
Can anyone tell me or post a pic of how all the wires connect between computer/iSub/satellite speakers on the newer HK Soundsticks?

May 27, 2012my macbook pro (late 2011) is powering down without warning. I'll be writing an email and w/o warning, it's off. I'm unable to turn it back on with the power button unless i hold it down for a slow count to 10. Fyi - machine is 100% charged when this happens. Two days ago, I did SMC and PRC resets with Apple Care. I needed to do both of these again yesterday on my own.

OS X V10.4 :: Starting From An External USB Storage Device (Intel-based Macs)?
May 31, 2012I have a 2006 Intel Macbook with a crashed hard drive. I'm kinda broke right now, so instead of buying a new hard drive I loaded ubuntu 10.4 onto an external hard drive (USB) and tried to boot the macbook from it. (Failed). I hold down option to launch Startup Manager and all it shows me is a cursor (no drives). I know the external drive is bootable because I a) booted the laptop from a LiveCD and used it to create the hard drive and b) I booted a Dell from the external. I've tried moving the drive to a different USB port, but no chips. I don't have anything else connected to the computer.
my question is: Can I boot the macbook from the external hard drive if the internal hard drive is shot?

Feb 27, 2012I've been going on two weeks now without my 13-inch mid-2009 mbp...i installed the 10.7.3. lion update but after it was completed i powered down my laptop and started it up only to find a blinking folder with a question mark...the logic board was replaced in mid-2010...i'm able to boot of an external drive running lion 10.7.3...i replaced the wd hdd with a new one & now it doesn't recognize it in disk utilities...i've replaced the ram with new ram & changed the hdd cable...i took it to apple & they said it should be either the cable or the hdd...i tested the hdd in another enclosure & it's running fine..

Jul 7, 2010Just put together a CV using Open Office, it's currently saved as a .odt. I'll be sending this out to a few companies and I'd like to know what the best file type is to select that will be readable by everyone? When I go to 'save as' I see a long list of options and I'm not sure which one to pick so that PC users can view.
Or can they load the .odt file just fine?

Intel Mac :: Finding An Alternative To Spotlight?
Jul 2, 2012This morning I found a file I was looking for then went back to find it again and spotlight will not locate it. I have re-started my computer and get the same results. I am hoping someone knows of some app that will so what spotlight is supposed to do. Another thing that bothers me is that I cannot tell where the file actualy is. If my recollection is correct, in the last OS X version, if you just held the cursor over the spotlight item for a few seconds, the location would be revealed. This no longer works?

Sep 2, 2014I have a desktop mac from mid 2011 and also a 2010 mac mini. I just got a new time capsule and time machine cannot find the new time capsule. I know the new time capsule is working because I have a third machine from late 2012 that found the new time capsule easily. Could it be an operating system issue? I am running 10.9 on the machine that is working, 10.8 on the mid 2011 machine, and 10.7 on the mac mini.

Jan 22, 2010Here's the deal: I have the most recent 17" UMBP, purchased last August, 2009 and got the Snow Leopard Up To Date Disk, did an install on my stock Hard Drive and have been VERY happy with everything for the past few months.
But... All these threads championing the latest Intel SSD G2 have finally gotten to me and, I just purchased the 80GB model from Newegg. It should be here tomorrow.
Now, I ask that you confirm, a specific question about installation from my UTD disk and then advise.
note that I've searched a ton about this subject. It's been answered in so many conflicting ways, I'm running it by you guys once again.
So then, it seems that I can NOT install Snow Leopard from my UTD disk onto the new, fresh Intel SSD installed into my 17" UMBP. This is the case, yes?
A workaround, I figure, would be to install Leopard 10.5 onto the new SSD and then to a clean and erase and then instal of 10.6 on top. I assume the UTD will read 10.5 and let the upgrade proceed.
So, finally, a question: Should I be worried about installing a total of two OSs given that I (cheaply!) opted for the smaller 80GB SSD and that 10.6 doesn't support TRIM?
