Applications :: OpenOffice Vs. NeoOffice - Look Very Similar

OpenOffice vs. NeoOffice
I've reached the point where I think it's time to finally wean myself from Classic applications (and data file formats) that I currently use on my old PowerMac g4 (still running 10.3.9).
I have both a white intel iMac and a new MacBook Pro which (of course) don't run Classic (at least not without a lot of haggling with Sheepshaver, etc.), and the g4 is 6+ years old and can't last forever.
I'm looking at iWork but it looks like a mess compared to AppleWorks, which I've used for years (I also still use an OLD copy of Microsoft Works running under Classic to maintain some databases that go as far back as 1987!). And iWork doesn't even contain a database module (granted, Filemaker Pro exists for that -- but for my usage, it's overkill).
I've downloaded and am experimenting with both OpenOffice and NeoOffice. They look very similar.

My wife has a Macbook Air, and has no other problems with any other software. However, using OpenOffice 3.0, when using the Word clone, it will intermittently freeze and require killing the whole openoffice app. NeoOffice also had a similar problem, but it happened much less frequently. Should I just move her to MS Office 08?

The only things that are absolutely essential - I need to maintain perfect compatibility with .doc files that contain a lot of tables and images, and I need to be able to work with Japanese language documents. I've tried Google docs but the spacing in my tables and the font sizes are usually off. Will [URL] be like that?
The last time I tried Openoffice was around the version 1.0 stage. Has it come a long way? I remember dealing with X11 installs and Windows 95 icons/toolbars and if that's how it still is, I'll probably just go the Microsoft route. Has anyone tried Openoffice recently that can let me know how the UI has progressed.

I am using NeoOffice and for the most part I've been happy with it, especially considering it's free. However, I have had a few compatibility issues when sending a doc to a Word user. I am considering buying the iWorks as it's much less expensive than MS Office.
Just curious as to what others are using for office productivity, and which one they find to be the most compatible, without actually using MS office.

I have been using NeoOffice for the past few years and I've been considering buying Pages. Just wonder if any of you have used both NeoOffice for word processing and Pages so that you can make a comparison. I have a few gripes about NeoOffice. It takes a long time to load and I have had some formatting issues when sharing docs with those using MS Word.

One of my editors had starting using OpenOffice and when he sends files to me they arrive in a zip that, when opened has some games and other things and one png file that is a thumbnail of the document, very tiny.
Is there a converter for OpenOffice docs that will open them in Pages (my preference) or Word ?
Any familiar with OpenOffice? Is it necessary to receive a zip file every time from him? He's technically inept and perhaps I can just tell him how to export the proper file.

I took everyone's suggestions and downloaded NeoOffice instead of using TextEdit. Since my entire document was in TextEdit, I just decided to copy and paste all the text into NeoOffice. Little did I realize that my book I'm writing has grown to 98 PAGES! Obviously, as soon as it got the document imported, the entire thing froze up. I haven't been able to get it to work well at all. I'm using a Powerbook G4 1.67ghz 1GB RAM, Radeon 9700. I can't believe that such a computer can't handle simple word processing tasks, and I'm convinced that it's a software issue.
I'm running Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.6 with all latest updates.

When I start typing a word, it tries to finish it for me (for example, if I want to just write the word "commit" it tries to sort of finish it for me by adding on "commit-ment" unless I press the Space bar-its sorta annoying-how can I change that?

I have found more and more that when I am working and switching between apps etc I quite often mistake the iPhoto icon for the iWeb icon in my dock. When entrenched with work and zipping around the screen a quick glance at either icon and a reflex movement to open one of them often results in the wrong app opening. So you have to stop working, wait for the wrong app to load then close it.
Does anybody else think the two icons are too similar?
Sure I could separate them a bit more in the dock but I keep my apps in a particular order in the dock to aid my workflow. Wouldnt the best thing be to change the icon of iWeb? I think all it needs is the colour of the orange photo changing to blue or something to distinguish it more from the iPhoto icon.
Thats just me venting and kind of trying to drum up support so you will send feedback to Apple to get it changed.

I am going to purchase a photo organizing/editing program soon (probably iPhoto), but I was wondering if there are any online, free or inexpensive programs that are comparable. The program that I buy must fit this criteria:
-Sufficient storage for many digital photos (This would eliminate Picasa's free service)
-Compatible with OS Tiger 10.4x
-Easy organization such as thumbnail viewing (or comparable to iPhoto's "Events")
Currently, I am trying to find a used copy of iLife '08, but many seem overpriced considering that iLife '09 is out. Ideally, I would like to spend no more than $35.

I know this is a Mac forum, but i need a little help finding a program and I thought I'd get the best results here. I'm looking for a program that is similar to OSX's Time Machine to backup my parent's PC. It is an HP and runs Windows XP and I have a Western Digital 750 GB USB external drive. Really, the main thing I want to backup is documents and music files. is there a program similar to Time Machine for Windows XP? Something I can set up to backup new files every few days or so?

Does anyone know if this was released as a final version in English? The last non-final release I can find for PPC Macs in English was the rc4. Strangely, the OpenOffice website lists a v 3.0 in Swedish for download but not in any other language. It's also listed in German but that's really v 2.4.1.

I been really curious about the temperature of my computer. Recently, I downloaded istat pro just to see the stats of my computer. I noticed that temperature is kind of high. For example, when I am using firefox and openoffice, the CPU A is 49 to 50c. I don't know if this is normal or not.
Also, when I use vmware fusion for windows xp, the temp for CPU A gets around 69 to 71c. Is this completely normal?
Here are the stats of my unibody macbook pro:
2.4ghz
2.0 GB of RAM
250gb of hard drive
15 inch
better words, it is the stock version.
Istatpro as of now:
HD Macintosh: 37
CPU A: 50
Enclosure Base 35
Enclosure Base2: 35
Enclosure Base3: 33
GPU: 45
GPU Heatsink: 42
Mem Controller: 43

I am having trouble getting comfortable with NeoOffice. One of the problems is the Tab key. I enter a lot of data in spreadsheets. I enter something, quickly tab over, enter something else, tab over, etc. When I enter text, the spreadsheet gives a suggestion. In Excel, the suggestion is accepted once I tab over. With this program, tabbing just switches between all of the suggestions. To move to the next cell, I have to use the right arrow key. Is there a way around this?

I'm editing a book in which the author switched programs and from PC to Mac in mid-stream, so the styling of the footnotes is not consistent. The text of the book is now in NeoOffice, and I've been asked to bring all the footnotes in accord with each other. I wondered whether there is a command that will change them so they all are in the same typeface and size. (I know that by setting up a Footnote style, all new footnotes will be correct, but I'm talking about ones that already exist). The author hasn't yet finished with the book, or I'd just get her to give me a chapter or two at a time and change them manually. Time is too short for us to wait till the end, when she has done all her revisions. I guess you get the picture. If there is no way to do this, please just tell me. If you know of one, though, I'd be grateful. Hoping that this is clear. It's gotten rather late! By the way, I'm working on a MacBook (not Pro) 13" with OS 10.5 and NeoOffice 3.1.1.

Just put together a CV using Open Office, it's currently saved as a .odt. I'll be sending this out to a few companies and I'd like to know what the best file type is to select that will be readable by everyone? When I go to 'save as' I see a long list of options and I'm not sure which one to pick so that PC users can view.
Or can they load the .odt file just fine?
