Software :: Windows Fading In And Out Rapidly?

Sep 26, 2008

For the past two days my Mac has been acting horribly. I'll be typing in email or on Mellel or Nisus, having a number of windows open, and all of a sudden they'll all begin to fade in and out rapidly. I can't do anything to stop it, having tried with the mouse, clicking it, and also to escape, but nothing. It'll stop on its own after 30 seconds or so.

OS X :: Macbook Leopard Inactive Windows Fading?

Oct 15, 2008

I have had my MB for a year now and I just noticed yesterday that when I have ichat (or any program open) and safari in the background the inactive safari window fades to transparent when not in use (when another window is on top of it). Is there any way to disable this? Or has anybody else had this problem. I don't remember turing on an option like this.

OS X :: Apple Rapidly Seeding Mac OS X 10.5.3 Test Builds

Apr 1, 2008

The next security and maintenance release for Apple's Leopard operating system could arrive sooner than later if the company maintains its current cadence, which has seen two successive pre-release builds land in the hands of developers in just five days. On the heels of the first external test build labeled Mac OS X 10.5.3 build 9D10 and released privately late last week, the Mac maker on Tuesday followed up with build 9D11, which adds nearly 20 more fixes and code corrections, bringing the new total expected with software's release to nearly 100. Among the most recent improvements, according to people familiar with the ongoing testing process, are fixes to AirPort connection issues and problems with the MacBook Air's sleep functionality. Other fresh fixes target Time Machine, Spaces layering and preferences, graphics corruption, display issues within Mail.app, Back to My Mac communication issues, and Automator quirks when interacting with Mail.app.

As was the case with Friday's pre-release distribution, Apple reportedly asked that its developer community focus their ongoing testing efforts on two dozen core system components. These include, but are not limited to, AirPort, AppleScript, Audio, Dashboard, Directory Services, Dock, DVD Player, Finder, Graphics, Installer, Printing, and VoiceOver. Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update, which currently weighs in at a hefty 410+ MB in Delta form and 530+ MB in Combo form, will mark the third update to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard since the software made its official debut in late October. While those people familiar with the ongoing testing process have been unable to provide a target release date, it's presume the update is being groomed for distribution sometime in April or May. Laptops :: MBP Battery Performance Declining More Rapidly

Feb 26, 2009

I've been looking for some info on the older 2007 MacBook Pro battery specs and stats, etc., but have been somewhat unsuccessful. Lately my MBP has been draining the battery at a much quicker pace than normal. This machine is only a year old now (however CoconutBattery says the battery is 16 months old). Still, the battery capacity shouldn't have diminished too significantly. Before I restored the Mac and installed the Windows 7 Beta, I could average 3-4 hours on a full charge. Normally, I would keep WiFi + Bluetooth enabled, an external monitor attached, several USB peripherals plugged in, and the main display would be set to maximum brightness. 3-4 hours was pretty nice considering the amount of power the machine could have been using.

After I partitioned my hard drive, the battery life was cut in half on the OS X side. Windows 7 power management was even worse. I figured that there may have been extra disk activity causing this problem. After I finished toying with Redmond's new OS, I removed the Windows partition and moved on from there. I know after I removed the partition, I was getting excellent battery life initially. Once that short period ended, it went downhill from there. The battery meter has become surprisingly accurate as of late; in a minute or so, you can easily watch the percentages drop 1-2%, which appears abnormal. I can manage 3 hours on a single charge at best, but I usually get less. I decided to take greater care in cycling the battery, in hopes of nursing it back to health, so to speak. It doesn't appear to be working so well. Enabling WiFi and other peripherals only drains more power, but turning them off again adds only 5 minutes. So when I'm using several devices at once, I'm lucky to get a little over 2 hours. Turning off menu items and background apps does nothing either.

It's been this way for several weeks now, and yet, iStat, System Profiler, and CoconutBattery all report seemingly acceptable and consistent battery info: 86% Battery health, around 180 charge cycles, and the capacity is around 4700mAh (out of the original 5500) for now. The computer believes all is well. Performance says otherwise. I'd like to think that physically the battery seems to be okay. I've cycled and calibrated it several times. I have read reviews that indicate that Santa Rosa MacBooks with new batteries have averaged similar runtimes to the ones I experience now, but I know mine has usually bested all of the reported tests. It just seems wrong for the average runtime to go from almost 4 hours to 2 when the battery is (supposed to be) maintaining the same health level. I have AppleCare if it needs to be replaced, since this drastic change in usage time is very noticeable and counterproductive for me, but it could just be the computer (or me for that matter). Is this behavior normal for a battery of this age? What should I look into? If this is normal behavior I can live with it, but I would prefer to get as much out of the one I have.

MacBook Air :: Cycle Count On Battery Rapidly Increasing

Mar 26, 2008

So first off, I absolutely love my MBA. Now that we have that out of the way. Since day 1 I've noticed that the cycle count on the battery seems to be climbing MUCH faster than it should.

- I've had the machine 51 days. I was out of the country without it for 9 days so really, I've had it for 42 days.
- According to iStat and System Profiler my battery's cycle count is 37
- According to System Profiler my battery's health is "Good"
- According to iStat my battery's health is at 98% (It started around 96%, has been as low as 94% but seems to have settled in at 97 or 98% for some time now)
- According to system profiler my maximum charge is 5006 mAh. (It's also gone up a bit since the machine was new).

I thought the definition of a cycle was the equivalent of 100% depletion of the battery -- whether that's one long unplugged stint that sucks it dry or 10 really short ones. A cycle is the same as using ~5000 mAh of battery power. I've been really good about keeping it plugged in while I work (the outlet is conveniently located). I've run the battery most the way down maybe 5 times. I do, however, run it down 10 or 20% almost every day as the machine travels with me in sleep mode or spends the night unplugged in sleep mode at my girlfriend's place).

I haven't done any careful testing but it seems though that if I run the battery down just 20% or 30% or so and then charge it all the way back up the cycle count increases by 1. Considering I've only used it for 42 days, and the cycle count is already at 37, I'm worried that it will hit 200 cycles by the time it's 8 or 10 months old. Isn't the point where battery performance starts to wane? Anyone else out there notice a rapidly climbing cycle count?

MacBook Pro :: Gray Dots On LCD Screen - Rapidly Increasing

Dec 2, 2009

I have a Macbook Pro 2.2 Santa Rosa Rev. D model. Recently I have discovered gray dots appearing along the top of my screen.

A few at first, but masses growing are growing rapidly. In the past 3 weeks the problem has started to spread to both my right and left edges as well. Under different viewing angles the dots sort of dissapear. The dots are not uniform in size or pattern.

I have a slight feeling that this has to do with my NVIDIA 8600GT graphic card.

I read tonight that that specific card was reported faulty and thousands have had problems and have had to get their logic boards replaced.

I also read that Apple extended their warranty for this specific reason.

Anyways, the dots are increasing and it's worrying me as I am not sure if this will be covered or not.

Applications :: Deleting Old Files From The Backup And Is Rapidly Consuming Space On The NAS?

I've recently switched to a MBP after years using Windows/Linux.

Time Machine sounded ideal but seems to have issues with FileVault (if I wasn't on the same network as the NAS the logout process took >15 minutes, presumably whilst it looked for it).

I'm currently using the bundled Memeo Backup software. It works okay except it doesn't have any way to delete old files from the backup and is rapidly consuming space on the NAS.

I just came home from a 4 day vacation and noticed that my wifi was down. Upon inspection i found that the light on my Airport Express is flashing green rapidly (3-4 flashes/second - much faster than the flashing when starting up).

I cannot find the Airport with Airport Utility and I have tried both a hard reset and a factory reset with no luck - it just keeps flashing.

Is there anything I can do or is it dead?

MacBook Pro :: MBP Screen Fading Out?

May 4, 2009

NOT A BRIGHTNESS ISSUE. Had to get that out...before anyone responded. lol

I've started to have a problem with my 2007 SR MBP. The screen starts to gradually fade out to this purplish color gray color. Most of the time it occurs when I open the lid and the computer wakes up from sleep or is powered on. Everything on the screen gets "washed away" although I know things are still working because the brightness and volume controls still work.

Tapping the lid for a bit behind the LCD seems to "shake" the screen back to its normal state. However, sometimes it'll go right back to the fading out behavior.

Unfortunately I don't have anything to capture it on video at the moment. I've taken pics but still shots don't really capture the problem well. Most of you would probably think its just a pic of my MBP with a boring background. And since I can't reproduce the problem on demand I have yet to take it in for an Apple Store. The best thing I could find online was the following:

My screen looks like its doing something similar to the above Youtube video. Although it has nothing to do with an external monitor. Anyone else experience this problem before?

MacBook Pro :: Screen Fading MBP Mid-2009?

Nov 13, 2010

I got a 13" Macbook Pro in June 2009, and I really like the quality of the whole computer.

I just updated to OS X 10.6.5, and then I noticed a spot on my screen that looks like it's fading or ghosting. It's easiest to see when there's just light being emitted from the screen and no color, but it's always visible. I highly doubt that it's ghosting, because I never leave my screen on when I leave the computer. There are also these little black dots in rows that are visible in the fading section of the screen, but you can't see them in the attached images. I'll be able to upload higher resolution images tomorrow after noon.

Any ideas as to what this could be? I put my laptop in my backpack for school, but I'm always very careful about how I treat it and never leave it unattended. I also have no idea what that image would be if it was ghosting, because it doesn't look like anything to me.

MacBook Pro :: Speakers Fading In And Out On Different Players

Mar 27, 2012

I have had my MacBook Pro for less than a year and usually very happy with it. However, in the last week the speakers have been playing up. When I'm watching a show or movie, at unexplained times, the audio will fade out so it sounds really quiet and sort of far away. This has been happening on different players, such as VLC and Quicktime. It also happens with different files, and at random times. It seems that playing a song or two on iTunes fixes it. The laptop has definitely NOT been around any liquid or anything that could have damaged the speakers.

Applications :: Inactive Safari Fading Transparent?

Jun 4, 2009

so just the other day, I noticed that my safari window was fading transparent any time I would make it an inactive window, for example by clicking onto the desktop. I don't know why or how this could have happened, although the only thing I remember installing recently enough was "Inquisiter" for Safari, but I've uninstalled that and it still seems to be happening.

I'm using the most recent version of the Safari 4 beta in case you needed to know.

I guess it's not really a BIG deal since it doesn't really harm my ability to do anything in OS X, but I'm just a little confused as to how this happened in the first place. Does anybody know why or how this happened and how I could disable this?

Here's a video of it happening just to help you understand what's happening:[URL}

Then today I go to the local apple dealer (in Denmark) and I see the exact same bright line on the MBA screen in the shop. I also checked a unibody Macbook, a white Macbook, and an 24" iMac. None of these screens had the problem - it was only the Air. So now I wonder: is this a feature of the MBA, or was I right in returning it because of this.

However, when I send the slideshow to idvd and burn the DVD the each song fades off to silence way too early! It's not an idvd issue, because when I preview the DVD before burning it, the audio does the same thing.

I've tried changing the mp3 to m4a, still same fade. I've also tried making them one track in Audacity, still same fade. I don't know what to do to fix it?

This is done with iphoto 09 with the latest update on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.7.
