Applications :: New Text Editor Available For Mac
Dec 17, 2010UltraEdit now available for the Mac, I've been a long time user of this text editor on windows for years and I've been lucky enough to do some beta testing with the product. I'm not connected with the author in any way but if someone needs/wants a new text editor, I highly recommend it.

Aug 30, 2009I have been using TextEdit up until now, but have recently realised a few of it's limitations. E.g., I had a file from an app I use that needed to be edited and a small bit of code C+P'd into it. TextEdit opened the file but showed it as a blank file? I downloaded and installed TextWrangler and it worked perfectly. However, I don't really like TextWrangler all that much, and was wondering whether you had any alternatives that you use that are better than TextEdit?

Nov 21, 2009Does anybody have a good free text editor to recommend for OS X?
Basically, I want something that's developer friendly, with as many of these features as possible:
1) Colour syntax code highlighting (ex Java, C, Perl, HTML, etc)
2) Column select mode
3) Line numbers
4) Character numbers in line
5) Regular expression search and replace (grep)
6) Line wrapping on/off
7) Tabs or equivalent
8) Diff between files
I have MacVim and it does most of this, but the interface could be improved a bit.
If no free editor does this, I'm willing to consider TextMate or BBEdit.

Jul 7, 2008I have been using the Textmate demo for a few days and I like it's code folding and macros, but I wish it had an auto- autocomplete and tabs. I tried Komodo edit too and loved it's features; however it has the clunkiest Interface of any editor. I have never been a Dreamweaver fan, but if it has macros I will shut up and use it. I think I am, going to email the developer of Textmate later, because it really is a very nice editor, but it is lacking some needed features.

Sep 17, 2009I just switched to a MacBook Pro from windows. I used notepad++ for editing for a custom file format - I could enter all my keywords, operators, comment styling and it would give me the choice on how to colorize every part of it and give autocompletion for all of it too - its called a User Defined Language. I have tried every mac editor that I could find, but I couldn't find this in any of the programs. did i just miss it?
I couldn't even get textmate or bbedit to give me a list of sql keywords for autocompletion. and i understand that these are the best editors available? Could really use a powerful native editor for development - one that can at least give me simple autocompletion for the main languages (if it will give me function calls - that would be just perfect.
OS X V10.7 Lion :: Text Edit For HTML Editor?
May 2, 2012I'm using Text Edit in plain text format as a html editor. I get an error when I try and edit using Transmit, when I try to save, Transmit says: The documents "doc-name.php" could not be saved. Text encoding Western (ISO Latin 1) isn't applicable. If possible, select a different text encoding. I cut/paste from text edit into the Transmit file and it doesn't work.

May 13, 2012My Macbook Pro loses print options after a while when I work with Photoshop. I can not type in email or in text editor. Only thing that helps is to restart the computer. The error occurs both when I am working in Photoshop (CS3) and (CS5). The error did not exist before. Has 8 GB of Ram and 425 GB of free hard disk. What to do?Â

May 28, 2007I am looking for a html text editor that color codes html tags. I am used to using cuteHTML on Windows which works EXCELLENT! I would assume there is something like this on OSx? I dont want anything to "build" webpages for me like Dreamweaver. For doing html by hand (and copy/paste) the colors really help your eyes work on a complex page easier than just using textedit for example.

Mar 8, 2009I despise TextEdit. I've used VI since I've been using computers so naturally I took very well to MacVim. Though I want to set it as my default editor for editing blank files (plain UTF-8 text files without an extension). So I threw the .app inside of a folder named "oldTextEdit" and created a symlink to MacVim and named it TextEdit.app and placed it in /Applications, but it doesn't work. When I go to the command line and type "open -e" it still opens with TextEdit.app - The only thing I can think of is that it ignores symlinks (or as mac calls them, an "alias."). I moved TextEdit.app to another drive and my alias worked fine on double clicking a blank file, it opened up MacVim. BUT - if I go to terminal and type "open -e" it opened up TextEdit (not sure how).
Now when I click that same UTF-8 blank text file (created using "touch") it opens in TextEdit (again, I have no clue how, TextEdit.app is on a different drive).
Update: I zipped up TextEdit.app and now when I open blank text files it opens in MacVim like it should. This time when I type "open -e" it throws the following error:
LSGetApplicationForInfo() failed with error -10814 while trying to determine the application with bundle identifier com.apple.TextEdit. Which I guess is fine, as long as in the GUI is opening with MacVim instead of TextEdit. I realize it involves the LaunchServices.framework database, but I can't figure out how to use that for hell. I realize to some this is a weird request, so I ask if you don't have any good input you just ignore it.

AUS3DLuke DEVERE - (Brisbane Roar, AUS)
The spaces between "AUS", "1", "GK", and "Andrew" are all Tabs. I need to get this document into this exact format:
AUS1 Andrew Redmayne
AUS2 Daniel Mullen
i.e. I need to delete the extra information, remove some of the tabs, and convert words in ALLCAPS to first letter in uppercase, rest of word lowercase. Does anyone know a text editor that can do this? With Apple's Text Edit I can't even seem to get rid of the tabs - is there even a way to search/replace a tab character?

QuickTime :: Video Editor Sends Us Files That DO Work?
May 14, 2012We updated two systems to 10.7.4 over the weekend. Now, when we receive QT files via email that were converted using Apple Compressor, we get a message within the mail message that reads "Missing Plug-in". Â
Also, these files are not usable within Logic Pro 9. They cause severe issues with Logic. Files are unplayable, and/or cause the arrange window to change to a light-grey. We have a workaround for the moment that involves re-exporting the offending files in Quicktime Player 7 (using my old QT Pro Plug-in). That allows us to use in Logic.Â
Strangely, another video editor sends us files that DO work. Files that did not go through compressor, but instead were mastered with MPEG Streamclip work just fine! Anybody else experiencing this or similar things? Any solution availble or in the works?

Sep 8, 2014I cannot make the text substitution feature to work. Specifically, the only substitution that is being done, is the one for "On my way!" which was there by default. Anything else I add is simply ignored. This happens in all applications (TextEdit, Mail, etc). Yes, I have made sure that all the right boxes have been ticked, etc.

Intel Mac :: Printed Text Doesn't Match Size Of Onscreen Text
Jul 2, 2012Mac screen resolution is getting higher and higher, which is nice, but the downside is that we seem to have lost "what you see is what you get." I have set the default document size of Text-Edit to about the size of an 8 1/2 x 11 document, which fits easily on the screen. I have what appears to be a single page of text. It all easily fits in the document window. The headline fits across the width of the page. But when I choose Print, the print preview shows that the text is going to spill out onto two sheets of paper.  I exit out of the print document and reduce the text size so that it all prints out on one sheet of paper. The problem is, the size of the text onscreen is now TINY! It looks like it's about 6 point while the printed text looks like it's about 12 point! No WYSIWYG!  When I revert the document to the way it was originally, where it was going to print out on two sheets of paper, and then hold my printed document up next to the screen, the printed size matches the onscreen size almost perfectly, even though, if printed out at this size, the text would spill out onto two pages and be huge. In other words, 18 point size text prints out at about 12 points and 12 pt text prints out at about 6pts, so there's about a 6pt difference in how text looks onscreen and how it prints out. Again, No WYSIWYG! My older Macs had much lower-resolution screens, but text printed out at about the same apparent size on screen. I know the original Macs had 72dpi screens so that they would closely match the printed size of text, and I like the fact that monitors keep getting better, but is there a way around this problem of printed text not matching the size of onscreen text?

Final Cut Pro X :: Correcting Text In Project That Will Not Show Separate Text From Video
Dec 7, 2014So I found the lost project in FCPX. It has a music tract, text and video. When I pulled the project down for editing, I am able to separate the music from the video, but the text bubbles do not appear above the video allowing me to change the misspelled words that need editing.I've searched all of my backup drives for the original footage in case I have to re-edit the whole thing, but I'm unable to find the original footage. Every event in my libraries appears as a finished project.

Safari :: 5.1.2 Keeps Changing Text Field Randomly On Text Input
Feb 21, 2012Safari keeps changing the text field on input, do you know how to correct this issue?Â
Here is an example:
Let's say I load www.google.com, it appears in the safari window as usual.
Suppose I begin to type a search in the google search field at the top right of the safari window (not the one on the google page)
if when doing this the sentence is long for the search, at some point randomly, the rest of the text will be entered this time in the google search text field on the google page! (which is the very next text field) So when I hit enter it makes google search half of my request...
Safari changed the text field I was into with no warning. I want to say I do not press tab at any moment. This is annoying really, and this does not appear anywhere else than in Safari. It seems the issue is not systematic, but appears quite often.
I have no universal access setting except "enable access for assistive device" I had to check this box upon installing a software in the past but I can't remember what it was.Â
OS X :: How To Select Text Layer And Modify Text And Add Watermark
May 17, 2009I have designed a corporate letter head for a friend and it is still in jpeg format after using photoshop. Now I want to import it into a pages document so that I can give it to him in PC format so he can type over the watermark and put his letters onto his letterhead... now I can do that quite easily on my PC but not so on my Mac...
I can add the watermark image into the Pages document but for some reason I can't work out how to modify the text from then... i can see how you move the text formatting but if i wanted to add a word into a paragraph etc i can't select the text. It's as if the watermark layer is the only layer I can select and the text is not longer selectable.... can anybody help me out with this please? I just need to be able to select the text layer and modify the text..
Software :: App For Image Editor?
Nov 19, 2007i've used seashore, pixelmator, and pixel 1.0, and i was wondering if there was some other app that was free and has the same functions as pixelmator. my one quip with seashore was that it couldn't resize images to specifications. (or maybe i never found out how to)
i enjoyed pixelmator except for the fact it was a 30 day trial and had a watermark stamped across it.
what other image editors are out there?
