Software :: Unrecognized Names On Computer?

Apr 14, 2006

browsers memorize your username so that when you begin to type it in, it automatically finishes it for you? Well, I went to type in my username (not this forum)--not to sign in (I was already signed in) but to do a search of recent posts that I'd made to see if there were any new replies--and a drop-down list of about 10 names popped up (er ... down, rather). One of them was my username; the other nine I'd never heard of before.

OS X :: Unrecognized Username And Password After Install & Archive?

Mar 20, 2009

I have a G4 Powerbook that I bought 2005. After it slowed down, I decided to perform a complete install. I backed up all my data on an external harddrive , reinstalled and it worked fine for a week. (My data is not on the external hard drive anymore because I transferred it to the laptop as I had to empty it for another back up project). So in brief, my data is not backed up anymore.

My notebook suddenly crashed, I restarted it but it wouldnt turn on. I then performed archive and install, restarted it, it asked me for my username and password, I entered them, but it didnt take it.

I then changed my password again from utilities, but it still wouldnt take it. I called apple support and they were clueless. The discs I used to perform the installation are the same ones I got with my laptop when I bought it. When I try to change the password in utilities, it would not give me an option to chose username, but only to change the password.

What can I do at this point?

IMac :: Catastrophic Hard Drive Failure - Unrecognized By System?

Nov 15, 2009

It looks like the hard disk in my 1.5 year old iMac (24" 3.06 C2D, running 10.6) suddenly failed today. I woke the mac up from sleep and pretty much immediately I got a spinning beach ball. The system was totally unresponsive so I did a hard reset. Unfortunately the blinking "?" folder came up on the gray screen, instead of the familiar Apple logo. Booted off the OS X disk and ran Disk Utility. The hard disk comes up as "media" and unrecognized by the system. So no First aid or formatting possible. I'm guessing the hard disk has given up but before purchasing a new one I want to rule out anything more serious like motherboard issues.

Hardware :: Airport Express + WD HDD - Unrecognized Airport Disk

Jan 11, 2009

MBP 2.2; OSX 10.4.11; Airport Express 802.11n (version 7.3.2); WD MyBook 320GB (format Mac OS Extended) I'm trying to get the WD HDD setup as a wireless hard drive, but it's not showing up at all in Airport Utility (I don't even have a 'disk' tab in the 'manual setup' menu). Airport Disk Utility just says "no airport disks found." Of course the HDD works fine when plugged in directly to the MBP. I've searched apple support and these forums, but haven't found anything that works yet. All help I have found says use the 'disk tab' in AE manual setup window. What do I do without a 'disk' tab? (or how do I get one?) is this a firmware/software issue with the AE?

OS X :: How To Rename Partition Names

Dec 11, 2009

, this is mainly an aesthetics thing so it isn't too important, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I recently created a Windows partition, and while I am in OSX the partition shows up on my desktop as a drive called "Untitled". It cannot be renamed and it persists on the Desktop even when I uncheck "show hard disks on desktop" in the Finder settings (which I usually leave unchecked).

I was just wondering if there was a way I could rename it something like "Windows HD" to contrast with Macintosh HD and if I can hide it from the Desktop like I do with the Mac partition.

OS X :: How To Use Major Studio Names In IMovie 11

Oct 22, 2010

After some sneaking around in iMovie 11's files, it was rather easy to allow you to use major studio names in iMovie 11 when Apple doesn't allow you to do it. I wrote a blog post about it with how to do it and with pictures. You can find it here [URL]. First you need to locate the TrailerStrings.strings file within iMovie. The location of it is here Applications/iMovie/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/TrailerStrings.strings. Before you open it up change the permissions of that file so it will allow you to save it once your done.

Once you did that open it up in your favorite text editor, don't use Xcode because some reason it won't allow you to save it once your done. Find the line that says "replacementString = "-;". Change the "-" to whatever studio you want to use, I used Universal, so change it to "Universal". Save it and go into iMovie (if you have it open when you edit the file, close iMovie and reopen it to see the change) and it works! If you want to use another studio name you must change it in the file. Note: Don't try to change "-" to "" and remove the dashes, it will crash iMovie because it will be expecting a string to. compare.

OS X :: File Names Not Case-sensitive?

Oct 25, 2010

Every unix system that I've worked with has had case-sensitive file names. In other words, file name "foo" is different than "Foo" is different than "FOO" and so on. In the MAC OS X shell,

if I have a file name FOO, and I type "more foo", then the contents of FOO are displayed, instead of an error message saying "foo not found". It also means that I can't really create files "foo" and "FOO".

Is this something that Apple has implemented on top of unix? Is it possible to get around this, so that the names do indeed become case-sensitive? It doesn't seem like an inherent unix thing, because if I type "f <tab>", and the only file in the directory.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Deleting Old Folder Names

But, those annoying, old folder names still appear on the hard drive.

My machine has multiple drives so I have triple boot and the other drives work fine so it is the system, not the computer itself.
