View 2 RepliesI recently bought a new SSHD/Hybrid Drive for my mid-2012 MBP and I plan on installing it. The drive matches all physical requirements to fit inside my laptop, however the issue is on getting OS X to boot on the drive. I was looking into booting from a USB drive as it was the most convenient option for me that I saw while surfing Apple's website. However, in the system's requirement anecdote, it stated that it [the recovery disk file] was incompatible with all Fusion drives, which worried me. I've seen some people state that the Fusion and Hybrid are the same thing, and some say it's not, but in the case they are the same, how will I be able to boot the OS onto it? I am trying to avoid bringing it to the Genius Bar to have it installed, but if I have to, I guess.
I am also increasing my RAM from 4 GB to 16 GB.
I have a mac pro running 10.6, and i'm trying to set up sharing only acconts.
I followed the apple KB article, and created a network sharing only account with a password, and selected a folder to be shared... here's the problem, no one can log into that account!
For example, account tilted Media is listed as a sharing only account, and has read access to "Array 1", however if i try to AFP in, SSH, or SFTP in, nothing will accept that username and password! (however I can do all of those with the actual admin account)
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Apple Mail, and I was wonderingwhether it's possible to have multiple logins for Mail on a single Mac. Here is my situation:
I have a small company with 5 employees who need to access their website e-mail using IMAP on a single iMac. We've been using the Horde web client which is horrendously slow and ugly. I would like for each employee to be able to use Mail to login to their e-mail account and then logout once done. This way employees won't be able to read each other's e-mails. I don't want to have different OS X root level login ID's because then my employees won't have access to all the files on the main admin ID.
i'm trying to setup isight to take pictures whenever there is an invalid login.
i've searched around and there seemed to be a pretty decent guide from a year ago but the authsight program link is dead.
i've looked into other programs like ialertu but i'm looking for a program that will take a picture(s) at invalid logins and email them to me. ialertu just attracts attention with the alarm noise and i've had trouble with receiving the picture in my email.
With any other browser automatic logins can be set for forums, homepage, etc. I have not been able to do this with Firefox...I have gone through every Preference page. The only setting I can find is under Security which has a checkbox for 'Remember passwords for site'. I have checked this but it don't seem to work.

Is there a way to create user logins or some other grouping for a set of applications to use (memory) resources optimally -- for example only mail and Safari and Word in one grouping and another for Safari and an audio recording application, etc.?

It linux I could mess with the /etc/security/limits.conf, but it does not seem available in OS X.
Also, in sysctl I could not see any suitable variable to set.

im new here and just bought a new macbook! so im new to mac as well.
i work for 24 hours, and i leave my macbook at home...now my roommate has people over all the time, and i know they try and use my macbook to play music. but they always deny it.
is there a program or way i can use the isight to take a pic, and see what password they are trying to type when they try and login?
is there a way of making the last few accounts that have logged in to be stored on the client computer temporarily, just incase the server ever went down? There is such a setting in Windows Server 2003, I'm just wondering if Apple has anything that does that.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was just doing a superduper backup which failed halfway through because i didnt realise my wd passport drive that was plugged in was auto backing stuff up and there must have been a conflict. Now, I dont know what to do. Email accounts.gone. Any registered apps, still there but reg details gone, any and all system preferences (like trackpad setup just came to mind) gone. Dock and all the items in it and crap I made to ,make it look fancy. gone. Stuff that loads at the stuff...gone.
I know this must have to do with my user directory but wtf? I know my timemachine backup is fine as i did one before all the problems, but is my superduperbackup screwed? I cant stress how screwed I am, I got reports due right before xmas and im like at square 1 now.
Running OSX 10.5.8 (plain vanilla installation) when I select "Sleep" it will not awake from sleep. This is on my G5 tower.

Since it will sleep with a minimum installation any ideas on how I can get it to awake from sleep without having to do a hard restart?
If I can get it to awake... then I can trial-and-error it to find out what software is preventing it from going to sleep.
I recently purchased a mac pro for my work! I just got my memory modules from OWC and i installed them. After installing them, my macpro refuses to boot normally. It keeps going to a black screen that tells me there is no boot disk available and please insert disk and press enter to boot. My bootable HDD is in the HDD bay. I held down the option key and it booted up by selecting the bootdisk. Problem is after i booted up, everything in my Mac OS is lagging. All the applications are lagging. As i am typing this thread, the words that i am typing are really lagging.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an audio CD that my PowerBook will not read. I've read this CD in other media drives (such as my car's CD player and another computer's CD player), and I've read a different CD in my Mac's drive.
It appears to me that the issue then is this particular CD and my computer.
First, the CD is in very good condition, with no visible scratches unless you really scrutinize the read side. the label side has no damage at all. It is a 15 year old CD, but was probably played very few times when it was new, and has been simply sitting on a shelf for over a decade.
sometimes I insert the CD and after several seconds of unusual noises from my CD drive, I am able to begin to play it in itunes. However, after 1 to 3 minutes it inevitably will begin to skip so badly that itunes stops playing it, and often hangs up, forcing me to use 'force quit'. other times I insert the CD and after several seconds of unusual noises from my CD drive, the drive simply spits the CD back out, without ever having read it at all.
Is it possible that there was something about the way an older CD is encoded that my mac cannot deal with?
Recently had a costly hard drive replacement which was the result of the mac book pro refusing to boot up! I have, however, got a external hard drive which uses time machine to back up all of my documents. While it seemed to work perfectly, when I really needed it to work it has let me down! It doesn't display any of my photos or music or docs. I believe it could be a problem due to the fact it I've changed hard drive! Its a intel mac if that's info is needed.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I turned on Caliope -my macbook- yesterday in the morning, she appeared to have problems to boot, there was a grey bar which has never appeared before, the grey bar was loading but hen it reached half way, everything stopped and Caliope crashed -automatically turned off- Been reading about the global crashes, I'd installed SL last weed so I think that's the prob.
I've posting cause I've a LaCie External HD and I could log in using it, I can also log in on my windows bootcamp partition which is called Mathusalem.
Now If I send my Mac to apple repair, there is any need to backup Mathusalem? As it is a partition drive.
so I've had my MacBook for over a year, and I've never had any issues like this before. On my personal account, Safari, FireFox, Opera, and the like cannot access [URL], [URL](or any variation that leads to the same site), any other Google-based websites, my school's online gradebook, nor will it allow me to log into my Yahoo! account, though i can still search on yahoo. I can use the Google search bar at the top of my safari window just fine, but not [URL], as mentioned before.

I had a bad 4GB chip of RAM from OWC, but the replacement just came in. configuring the following:
(4) 4 GB chips
(4) 1 GB chips
I seem to remember there being a discrepancy in how to arrange pairs or quads between what Apple says and what barefeats says. Which is the correct way to ensure 256 bit addressing for my configuration?
This worked before and now it doesn't! I either a hal.dll or ntoskrnl.exe error. This was working perfectly on one 500G HD which OS X does not reside on (OS X is on a 80Gb SSD).
1. 150Gb Windows 7 x64
2. 80Gb Windows XP x32
3. HFS formatted for storage of OS X things.
Now whichever way I install or partition it XP refuses to install after the first reboot (after it's copied files over). Now I've spent TWO days on this now and still no closer to fixing it. Windows 7 boots and works fine, XP refuses to install even if it's the only thing on the disk!
My Trash is not emptied by any instruction. I just hear the sound of empty trash basket.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to partition my hard drive. It's currently one whole 160 GB unit. I want to split it into a 135 GB partition and a 25 GB partition.
Currently Used Disk Space: 95.10 GB
Currently Free Disk Space: 53.51 GB
However, whenever I try to create the 25 GB partition in Disk Utility (formatted as Mac OS Extended - Journaled) it gives me an error message:

My iBook suddenly just stopped connection to my time capsules network. Everytime I can on my network to join it, it asks for my password which I then put in, then it says connection timeout. I have restarted both the laptop and time capsule but it still won't connect. I can get on the network perfectly fine on my iPhone but not laptop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy iMac refuses to sleep no matter what sleep preferences I set or even if I try to sleep it manually (apple>sleep). It doesn't do anything. The display doesn't even dim like it used to a week ago. I don't have anything plugged in but the keyboard and regular mighty mouse, and restart doesn't change anything either. The Apple store installed a new hard drive on the computer a few days ago, since the 1.5 year old one randomly crashed and died. So I don't know what kind of funky things they might have changed, I'm just wondering if there's any simple maneuver I can do to make it sleep like it's supposed to!
View 23 Replies View RelatedBrought snow Leopard from Apple, and got it yesterday. I installed it today, and whilst it seems faster I have a few problems. Mainly that it doesn't seem to boot into 64-bit mode, neither from an app changing it to boot into 64 bit or by pressing the 6 and 4 keys down.
Also, does anyone know why a plugin to make Quicklook have a list view for Folders won't work anymore?
Just bought my first mbp from apple store today and when I get home it refuses to turn on. I got a brick from apple store. Plugged the power in an let it rest for almost half an hour and still won't turn on. Going to apple store Tom morning to demand a replacement. Will apple do anything to compensate for the hassle that I went through?? And the customer satisfaction definitely went down.
View 24 Replies View RelatedSo I come home and see that my MBP's battery is dead. I plug it in and it begins to start-up normally but shuts down midway through. I press the power button and keys several times but nothing happens. The weird part is the fans still run and it still gets very hot. When you close it the sleep indicator light still turns on.
Note: I tried to reset the PRAM but nothing happens.
Note2: Its the low end 15' model (arrandale)
I have several iMac systems, all updated to 10.5.3 and running iChat 4.0.3, but only one of them reliably permits me to add new buddies! On my main system I can add a new buddy by selecting an entry from my Address Book, and it adds it to the list grayed out and then makes it solid, apparently after asking the AOL server if it is OK. On the other systems, the entry is added to the list grayed out, and then an alert is displayed and the new entry in removed from the list.
The alert indicates that the server has refused the request! If that same 'buddy' initiates an iChat session, the buddy entry is automatically created and remains in the list and is functional. I have tried trashing all of the related plist files and changing iChat to use port 443, to no avail. It still fails to permit new buddies to be defined (except on my main system, which is working fine). Does anyone know what other differences may exist between the systems that might result in this problem?
