Software :: Playing MP3 / AAC Files At Faster Speed Than Recorded

Apr 23, 2004

I want to play MP3/AAC files at a faster speed than they were recorded. I don't know if there is a program that will let me do this or a way I can change how it is recorded so that the playback is faster. I'm listening to Audiobooks but they read soo slow. I need to speed it up to keep my focus and interest.

OS X :: Will A Faster Processor Boost Internet Speed On My G4

Mar 24, 2009

New to the Mac world here, and really diggin my G4,which I got for free. But I need help with a frustrating situation. Here's the specs: Powermac Gigabit Ethernet dual 500 mHz G4,40 GB primary and 160 GB slave HDs,2 GB RAM,and a fresh install of Tiger with almost nothing downloaded, basically,a brand new machine. The issue: both firefox and Safari are sludgy on internet speed--watching Youtube videos, using Facebook, etc. It's not an ish with my router or modem--my older PC's blaze. it's really frustrating, and I've maxed out the RAM,so I want to know if an upgrade to a 1.8 or 2.0 processor will alleviate this problem once and for all,or if I have a boat anchor. Honestly,I don't do hardcore computing, just burn DVDs,a little photoshop, and play on the internet. There's no reason it should be so damn sluggish watchibng streaming video or simply writing on someone's 'wall' on Facebook.

Jul 1, 2009

MacBook Pro :: When Playing Games Usually Turn The Fan Speed Up To Around 5.5k Rpm?

Jul 21, 2009

I just got a new MBP and in an attempt to not overheat the processors when playing games i usually turn the fan speed up to around 5.5k rpm. They do a great job of keeping the processor at a decent level (~70 degrees Celsius) but i wonder if I'm doing the fans any harm. I do play for quite a long time (3 to 4 hours sometimes) and I have noticed a *very* slight humming from the fans which i reckon is wear and tear.

Software :: Parallels 6 To Run 40% Faster/launch Windows 2x Faster Than Fusion

Sep 8, 2010

Parallels is expected to announce as early as Thursday the sixth major upgrade to its Windows virtualization software for Mac OS X, delivering a significant performance boost over its predecessor, as well as 80 other new features.

The new Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac has been shown on average to run 40 percent faster than last year's edition, according to people familiar with the matter. Those same people said that the upgrade -- expected to retail for the same $79.99 price as its predecessor -- will also feature Windows boot times that are roughly two times faster than version 3.1 of its primary competitor: VMWare Fusion.

VMware and Parallels have gone head to head in the virtualization market since 2008, when the Fusion product was first introduced. Parallels has existed since 2006, and both products retail for an identical prices. In a recent study, Parallels 5 was already found to be 30 percent faster on average than VMware Fusion 3.

Parallels 6 is also expected to showcase tighter integration with its users' natural environment, adopting support for the Mac OS X's keyboard shortcuts, Spotlight search engine, and Expose windows management features. Similarly, the upgrade will offer the option to automatically apply a Mac's parental controls to their corresponding Windows applications, according to those familiar with the product.

Another major focus for Parallels is said to be gaming. Version 6.0 will reportedly deliver up to two-fold performance improvements while adding support for Dolby 5.1 surround sound and better handling of 3G environments.

Parallels 6 will sport compatibility with an enhanced Parallels Mobile application that will offer users the option of remotely accessing their virtual machines on an iPad, as well as an iPhone or iPod touch.

Parallels Transporter, previously a standalone application that allowed users to migrate a virtual PC image to the Mac, will come built into the new release as well.

Earlier this week, Parallels Desktop 6 was spotted on the shelves of a Fry's Electronics store in California. The product has not yet been formally announced.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

Hardware :: Unable To See Video Or Anything / Fans Spinning Faster And Faster

Aug 7, 2009

My father owns one of the original G5s, so its power pc not intel. Today while browsing an excel spreadsheet he says part of the screen turned black, then the monitor shut off, then the monitor came back on but not video. Mean while the fans started spinning out of control. Now when he tries to turn it on, he gets power, but all that happens is the fans spinning faster and faster and faster until he turns it off. No video or anything. Just speeding fans. He fears the CPUs died since they control the fans. Any suggestions? He also says the fans were spinning unusually fast these last few days.

OS X :: Playing Wmv.001, Wmv.002 Files?

When trying to learn how to play these files, a google search led me to another thread on this forum written by someone with the same problem. Another user suggest MacHacha as a decompression tool. I tried this, and it appears to have successfully decompressed the files into a basic .wmv file, however I am still unable to play the file.

When I try to open it, quicktime says it is not a movie file. I installed the newest version of flip4mac, and still get the same result. VLCPlayer and RealPlayer also give me similar notifications.

I notice that MKV files are getting more and more popular around us.

But it looks that these files are not supported very well on MAC.

Maybe it's because many MKV files use ReadVideo9 as video codec, which is not popular in MAC world.

As far as I know, the only software to decode Real Media File is RealPlayer, and RealPlayer do not support MKV files. So ...!!

Applications :: Playing VOB Files On Mac Mini

Jan 6, 2010

I just purchased a Mac Mini and was hoping to play VOB files (which I ripped on a Linux machine, not the Mac Mini) with the native DVD Player application. However, when I try to open the files, which have names like title1.vob, title2.vob, etc, the names are grey-ed out in the file selector window. I can't select those files, and therefore I can't play them. Am I doing something wrong? Can I play VOB files with DVD Player? If not, is there another way to play VOB files on a Mac Mini? I have an LCD TV connected to the mini-DVD port on the Mac Mini, and I'd like to be able to play the files to the TV screen, and also, use the Mac Remote to control Fast Forward, Rewind, File Select, etc.

ITunes :: Lag When Playing Audio Files From NAS?

Mar 12, 2012

Setup : Itunes 9.0.2 on a Macbook 5,2 running OSX.5.8. Audio Files on NAS (brought there using "consolidate library" in itunes), libraries still on main drive. I created a NAS account with the same ID as my admin one, and connect to it with a script executed on startup. I can do exactly the same things as when audio files were on my drive. The only problem is lag, when I play next track, edit metadata,...I checked wifi, ethernet, different cables,... didn't change a thing. Moreover, I can browse through all my tracks with VLC without lag. Last evening I ran idefrag for a totally different purpose and found 'itunes music library.xml" was fragmented (≈20 MB in 7 parts), "Itunes Library" too.

Here's the thing :When I defragment these two files at startup, and then launch iTunes, the lag issue disappears. When I quit iTunes, the library files are saved but written in parts again, and the lag comes back. Finally, if I defragment the files between a quit and a start, they must be edited again because they're split up again and the lag is still there.Since I didn't add new songs, itunes must be saving stuff like playing counts, which is useless to me. Make the library read-only?

Info:
MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8), NAS itunes9 lag fragmentation
