View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I see various Mac tutorials, tips, or suggestions, I usually see people launch applications by going to the folder (e.g. Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal). I've always been perplexed by this, because I have always launched my applications using Spotlight, and find that I can launch applications much more quickly this way (less than a second).
My question is: how do you usually launch applications?
Edit: and I see that I've forgotten to include Dock. I suppose that can go under Other.
I'm running OSX 10.4.11 with a 2 GHz Intel Cor 2 Duo and 2 GB of RAM.
When I try to load some applications (specifically CoRD and ImageResizer) they just briefly appear in the dock and then disappear, failing to open. These programs were not recently installed.
I've restarted, uninstalled/reinstalled the programs, verified/repaired permissions, verified/repaired the disk, re-updated the combo patch, run in a newly created account, cleared the cache, and deleted the preferences. With all of this, the programs are still failing to launch. Why? How can I get them to open? It's not OS threatening, but quite annoying.
I own a PowerBook G4 15-inch, been enjoying it for a long while now, having thoughts of upgrading it. Performance Question, Is the current Black MacBook (when the top of the range Intel processor is installed, and when maxxed out with RAM) faster in overall performance than my now aged PowerBook G4 15-inch? I saw a bloke take out his MacBook at a cafe recently and I was blown away by its compact size (weight is an issue and I'm prepared to compromise large screen size for smaller resolutions and less weight). Schlepping my Powerbook around in my large and well protected shoulder bag is quite literally giving me a pain in the neck. Software Question: Will I be able to run Photoshop CS2 and CS3 and Final Cut Express on the MacBook without wishing I'd upgraded to the 17-inch MacBook Pro - weight issues and compact form aside - instead ? currently I uninstalled CS1 from my Powerbook G4 800Mhz 2GB Ram because its performance sucked soo much, I ran back to Photoshop 7 and ImageReady 7.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have only recently started using macs but I have been quite enthused by the experience. So much so that one of my friends is considering purchasing a Mac Mini. He wants to run Photoshop on it and (like me) is about to buy CS3 basic. If he hates the mac adobe will apparently let him cross platforms back to windows for a small fee. Also will he be able to run boot camp with XP fairly well or is the machine too small to allow this? He will buy the beefier of the two and with 2gig of ram.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI've searched for the solution to this problem but I can't quite find it. I'm trying to install Photoshop CS4 (regular, didn't have the money for extended) and it doesn't let me. Perhaps it's the amount of available HD space on my laptop. There are 4.3 GB of HD space left on this MacBook (2,1). Anyone know what's going on? The program says it's already installed, I believe.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently use a G5 PowerPC 2.5 Quad with 8Gb RAM. With the ever increasing size of digital images (my camera now takes 24Mp images), I find the initial browsing of my images increasingly slow. Also, non-Intel processors are becoming less supported by the latest software and I figured it's time to invest in a new setup. Just today, I sent back my iMac i7 (as a result of the well publicised screen issues) that was potentially to replace my G5. I have taken the decision to invest in a new Mac Pro and utilise my existing 30" cinema screen. The likelihood is that I will wait to see what the 2010 Pro shapes up like, but in preparation, can someone please tell me what is better for photoshop (I will be upgrading to CS5 once released), one big or two smaller processors?? For example, looking at the current offerings, which would give faster/better performance, a 2.93 quad core, or 2 x 2.26 quad cores, each with 8Gb RAM?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI run a MacBook (White) 2.16 Ghz 2007 model, which is running x64 Snow Leopard. When I open Photoshop CS5, the splash screen shows it is x64. So I wait for it to load, and based on Apple Developer news and articles, you can't have a 64-bit Carbon framework application. I knew that with Carbon framework applications, you can't drag a window around by its titlebar when it's not responding, or frozen. With the 64-bit enabled Cocoa framework you can. When it was loading, I tried dragging the titlebar, and it wouldn't work, so I thought maybe it isn't 64-bit after all. I inspected the program with Xray, and it told me it was Carbon. I was confused. Is Adobe having the Mac users on or is just my computer playing up?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. A few days ago iTunes 10 started causing my computer to go crazy every time I launched it (didn't realize it was iTunes at this point causing the problems). The computer would slow to a snail's pace and eventually completely freeze. Then a day or so later iTunes stopped launching all together. It bounces in the dock, stops and then has to be force quit. Most disturbingly after one of these unsuccessful launches, when I try to shut down, the computer hangs and basically freezes requiring a hard shut down with the power button. A few reinstallations later, no change
View 6 Replies View RelatedBackground: A day or two after plugging a USB that had been plugged into a virus ridden PC into my Mac, the internet went berserk. My father told me that he thought it was the USB that had messed the internet up. A few days later, he said that the USB was fine, it was just that Apple came out with a Security Update that changed our router access password (we cannot access our own internet because our password was being changed by a "Security Update"). So, in a kind effort to provide internet for me, he went into my Account Settings and changed my permissions so I was able to access the Application "Internet Connect". Well, I was able to run the application and connect to our internet, but I couldn't launch any applications that didn't either: a.)Come with the machine or b.)Need the administrator password to install.
The Problem: I cannot launch any applications that didn't need the administrator password or come with the system. I AM able to run Apps such as iChat, iTunes, Ventrilo(required administrator password) and Quicktime. I AM NOT able to run any of the games that I have downloaded, teamspeak, transmission, teamviewer, or any .dmg file. After two weeks of looking for possible causes and trying everything in our power, my dad and I can't find the cause of this. He has taken off all parental control and given me control of everything on my account, but still I can't launch anything.
I recently installed Windows XP Pro on my Mac via Boot Camp and I'm having some issues. Sometimes i cant get games to launch and my wifi works some of the time, was I suppose to install something additional for the computer ? Any specific drivers ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI use two monitors: an Apple Cinema display and a Dell, which is display number 2. I installed SL and it was normal until I rebooted the first time. Now every time I boot up, the only display that is found is the Dell and I have to go into preferences and select "detect displays" to make the main one show up. It loads as if the Dell is the only display, and since it is smaller it messes up my desktop, lumping all my icons on top of each other. When I click "detect displays," it moves everything back to the Apple monitor, making it the main display as it should be, but it is all out of whack.
View 4 Replies View Relatedis it possible to launch OSX applications in the background without allowing them to steal focus from the current app? i sometimes want to have an application launch and not interrupt what i am currently doing.

i'm copying text from a webpage using safari and that i plan to edit in MS Office Word and so right after i open the webpage and its loading i use spotlight to launch Word and then go back to Safari. I often have a small chat program running, I keep it in the bottom right corner of my screen. It's kind of a stupid application, so it never pops up above active windows for an update, so I keep it uncovered - this means all my windows have to be shrunk to fit, and to not hide it.
Now, because I'm such an OCD person, I like to have a perfect, 1px border between applications, and I like things to be neat and orderly, etc. That means there's a VERY specific place all my firefox windows go. When i open a new one, however, they can be in any shape, size, etc. For a while, I had a bookmarklet with a keyword, I would just type "chatsize" into the URL bar, and the window would automatically position itself correctly. The problem with this is the fact that it, for some reason, would ignore the 4 leftmost pixels of the entire screen, and would not line up with the edge. Moving it 4 pixels isn't such a big deal, but it gets kind of annoying. No matter what I tried javascripting into the URL bar, it never worked.
I came up with a solution: Applescript, I could make the window go to the perfect spot and be the perfect size, but now, I have another problem: I can't launch the applescript from the URL bar. I want to be able to type in "chatsize" to the URL bar, and have it work perfectly, but whenever I change the bookmark to the applescript's location on my hard drive, it attempts to download it. Does anybody have any clue how to launch the application from the URL bar?
Newbie wants to understand why dvd player cannot launch video dvd. I have been to the apple store genius bar, where the problem has not been solved. It appears to be a software problem, since external HD running OS X 10.6.3 reads disk. I would rather avoid formatting HD drive. Can I selectively reinstall some software, such as DVD Player, from the original 10.6.1 installer disks? I have a Macbook 2.13 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 160 GB HD.

I updated from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 last night. Now booting takes much longer - as if Finder is taking an extra 5 minutes to load.
