Software :: Mailbox Renaming Deletes Messages
Aug 24, 2009
My apologies if this problem has already been covered - I haven't seen it.
Yesterday I tried to rename a mailbox (folder) in Mail. As soon as I changed the name, all of its sub-folders (sub-mailboxes?) disappeared except the one I was in. That particular sub-folder still shows its message (email) headers, but each email has lost its contents and is now showing the following error message:
"The message from ... has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
All the missing sub-folders are sitting in an extra white (greyed-out?) phantom mailbox with the old name, and they are showing no emails at all.
In short, I appear to have lost all the messages (emails) in the renamed mailbox and its sub-folders, and the Undo button in the Edit menu is greyed out.
Can anyone suggest a way to bring them back? Restoring the system to the most recent back-up will mean I will lose a lot of messages.
My version of Mail is 2.1.3 and I am running OS 10.4.11.

Using Leopard and Mail.
Under Trash I have 'POP Account' and 'On My Mac'
When I select a message and press delete I get a warning saying:
The message ... could not be moved to the mailbox Deleted Messages POP Account
The destination mailbox Deleted Messages POP Account does not allow messages to be moved to it.
I can drag a message to the 'On My Mac' folder and select delete and this removes the email - but seems wrong.
This is my first mac (first day), im used to a deleted message going to a bin which you choose to empty as and when.

I cannot seem to have the number of unread messages in my mailbox appear to the right of the inbox label. It used to be there, and I have another account set up in Mail and the number appears next to it when there is an unread message. It's just this one account. Here is a picture of what it is like, even though there is an unread message in the mailbox.I want the number of unread messages to be next to Gmail on the right. Also, the number of unread messages for the Gmail account do not appear on the Dock icon. Both of these functions work with my other account that is set up in Mail, and that account is a Gmail as well.

So far today, we've got about 10,000 new messages in our mailbox but they're all old ones that were deleted long ago. If we try to delete them now, they come back again.

After having had communication problems abroad using a 3G key Internet connection ( bad signal, jumping back to 2G, aborting connection suddenly, ...) I receive now systematicaly a copy of a mail I sent, one day before, to someone else, in a mailbox "recovered messages" (this is however my translation of the french name of the mailbox: ( "Messages récupérés - IMAP"). Deleting this message does'nt cure the problem: the message comes again (I do'nt know from where) and again. How to stop this reoccurant mail?

Although the number of unread messages is properly shown under Inbox on the Mailboxes list next to two of my three Mail accounts, the other one shows none when there some. The quantity is also missing from the total number of messages next to Inbox when I collapse the list. This was working fine for many years.

An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “Trash — (Folder)”. Leopard/Lion ... who cares. I've always been able to set up my corporate Exchange email account using OSX Mail application. However, I have NEVER been able to delete messages from my InBox. Is this just a set up issue I am unaware of or is this a long-standing bug Apple refuses to fix?

When archiving my Exchange account locally on my Mac, the server keeps syncing the messages back to my Mac! Ideally I would like my MacBook Pro to 'lead' the sync rather than 'combine'. I have tried many options including setting up a 'rule' which didn't move a single message! Also I tried copying all the messages, placing them in a local file & then deleting them from the inbox. But anything over around 10 messages, it just doesn't work! I have around 3000 messages I need to archive & cannot do it ten at a time. Also if I try using the web account on a browser it only allows me to move around ten at a time...! I am running 10.9.4 using Mac Mail.

Am I the only one who strips out the language support on my desktop computer just because? I leave about 5 languages in it but for my work computer, I am never going to use any language besides English to operate in. So why don't I do this?
Are there more people out there that strip this stuff out?

Started my system this morning and MobileMe seems to have deleted large quantities of my emails, including several most recent ones that I had yet to reply to. I thought this had happened before, but blamed my editing of email accounts when MobileMe became active. But this is definite, they were there last night and gone now. Not what I expect from an email service.

If I put a file in the trash, I get a message saying "Are you sure you want to delete (insert file item here)" Then it says it will be deleted and can not be recovered. How can I get it so it won't empty the trash whenever I put an item in it? So that it keeps the files in the trash bin?

i went on my macbook today, and saw that the HD was renamed to "hehehe"...I initially assumed it was one of my roommates messing with me, but it seems like a pointless prank, and nobody admitted to it...plus, i doubt they would know how. So my question is, and i know this probably sounds stupid, but is it possible for someone to access my computer through the internet or something? Did somebody hack me?

Working from OS 10.4.11 on PowerBook G4, iMac G5, and (early) MacBook. Have noticed while working in Entourage 2004, and possibly in other applications, not sure, that from time to time while typing I will accidentally press a key with my right hand, some key in the vicinity of the 'return' key, which will cause a contiguous string of text to be highlighted and deleted. It happens so quickly that I can never tell which key(s) I pressed to make this happen.
I think what actually happens is that the accidental keypress is causing the highlighting and then as I continue to type the highlighted text is of course deleted.
I can recover from this (once I notice it) by pressing command-z, but would like to prevent it from happening as I can lose other edits done before I notice the accidental deletion. If I knew what keystroke is responsible I might be able to disable it, or at least knowing might help me to avoid it.
I've done many google searches and have found nothing relevant. Have also searched these forums and the archive of MacFixIt forums and have found nothing.

I have just set up a Sky account and have been told I can only use IMAP to access my mails to my Mac Mail account.
I have set up an account in Mac Mail but every time I delete the mails from my Sky account or my iphone they delete from my Mac Mail on my iMac!
I am on Snow Leopard 10.6.3.
I have tried (in desperation) to reset to POP and spoken to SEVERAL people in at Sky help who have no idea! Disabling IMAP on my Sky account still allows the mail to come and go but STILL deletes them from my Mac if i delete them from my Sky account or iphone Is there a solution to this???

Mail 3.6 on 10.5.8 deletes old inbox messages after about 60 days, can't find a setting that is causing this gremlin. Changed from POP to Exchange account a few weeks ago and problems seem to have started then. I had no issues like this using POP account.

Sometimes one song in the middle of a cd is missing, and sometimes a single just disappears. The weird thing is that the name and albumcover is still there, but the music file is not. The original file in the music library is gone, and a lot of it is music i bought in itunes.
Also, i keep getting less and less space on my harddrive. It's like it's automatically filling up, allthough I'm not filling it with anything.
Could it be the solid state drive that's dying?

I had formatted the disk on my MacBook Pro and reinstalled 10.10.1. I then reinstalled about a dozen applications. When it came to recovery of my email I had the option of using Time Machine or a Clone of the old disk. I considered the clone first but the process was ugly so I decided to use Time Machine. I started the MacBook from the recovery drive and selected Time Machine. I chose an older Time Machine Backup (i,e. one that came from a Mavericks or even earlier version of OS X. The restore came up with an error message almost immediately so I stopped and tried to restart from the main disk holding down the option key as the machine started up. But alas there was no main partition. There were only the recovery and a third party partition to select. I chose the recovery partition again and tried to run Disk Utilities. It could see the partition. I ran disk repair and volume repair to avail. I finally formatted the space and began restoring the system from scratch.

iTunes (11.3.1) keeps deleting episodes of podcasts when I auto-sync podcasts on my computer with my iPod (Classic 160 GB.). However, this only happens with some podcasts. This is in spite of the fact that I've checked all available boxes in the standard settings, and the particular settings for each specific podcast, as "Do not delete any played episodes."
Some of the podcasts no longer exist, so if they disappear from my computer or iPod they're just gone forever.

I've only realized there is no option to rename a folder on a mac right click menu. You either have to double click it slowly, press enter or right click then "Get Info". It is probably actually easier on PC to rename folders

Very annoying to see on my desktop, just mocking me The same thing happens with my Windows partition HD. Why the all caps?? I've just gone along with it for all this time, but I finally want to take action. What am I doing wrong?

I have a large collection of MP3s that were ripped on a Windows PC and I want to add them to my iTunes library on my Mac. The problem is there is either no meta data for the files or the info that is there is wrong or badly formatted. The collection is organized with each album in its own folder, so I am able to tell what is what. Is there a program for OS X that would allow me to dump an album into it and rename all of the files and set meta data according to a certain format and get this track info from Amazon, Gracenote, or similar? Also, I would like to set the album art for each track.
