OS X :: Mysterious File In Trash - Never Deletes?
Apr 4, 2009This file keeps appearing in the trash.... The trash can be emptied, and it goes away until you open the trash again, or at login/restart.

OS X :: Mac Trash Bin Deletes Files Automatically?
Jan 26, 2010If I put a file in the trash, I get a message saying "Are you sure you want to delete (insert file item here)" Then it says it will be deleted and can not be recovered. How can I get it so it won't empty the trash whenever I put an item in it? So that it keeps the files in the trash bin?

MacBook Pro 13"
Mac OS X 10.6.8
2.3GHz i5
8GB 1333 MHz
Western Digital Passport USB2.0 1GB
32GB SD card
I plugged in the SD card, plugged in the WD Passport, and copied files from the SD to the WD Passport. I verified that the files are copied by comparing folder sizes, and amount of files. I then highlighted the files in the SD card, and delete. Then I opened Trash and compared the files in the Trash and the files in the WD Passport to ensure I really have copied the files.
Then I clicked Empty, and I saw files from both folders GONE in a matter of a second! How do I recover it? I'm not going to write on my SD and on my WD Passport from now, but I need a better more reliable software. I've tried Stellar Phoenix but it failed me. Remo just refuses to start up. This is urgent, as everyone would say, but this is for real! 30GB worth of files!

May 19, 2012For some reason, now when I delete or try to drag files/folders to trash, I get warning message 'This item will be deleted immediately. You can't undo this action.' And the files do NOT go into trash. Same if I CMD delete. I noticed this when I emptied the Aperture trash, got a warning something about permissions and cannot empty some files. They disappeared from Aperture, but the referenced master files were still in the original folder on my HD.(So I relocated the masters I was keeping, then deleted the remaining, they did not go into the trash but were permanently deleted). I don't recall changing any settings!I checked in Finder > Preferences > Advanced > 'Empty trash securely' is NOT selected.

I have multiple accounts set up on this system. When I do a file search (file name or contents) from my professional account, names of files from my personal account are found. Clicking on these shows no directory and double-clicking produce the message:Â
"The alias 'my_personal_file' can't be opened because the original item can't be found."Â The above message includes the options to "Delete Alias" and "Fix Alias..." Â Delete Alias apparently does nothing. Fix Alias allows me to specify another file, but that produces:Â
"The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occured (error code -43). Also, I cannot put them in the trash. A sudo command-line search cannot find these files/aliases anywhere on the computer accessible from my professional account.Â
Mac Mini :: Mysterious Gray Boot Screen Of Death
Aug 11, 2008I'd been noticing recently that my mini would periodically give me the gray screen of death when I'd boot it up, but after holding down the power to shut it down and restarting everything would be fine. I didn't think too much of it. I just moved out of my old place and into my new place and now my mini is doing it much more frequently. I just hooked it up for the first time since moving and I had to do the shut down/start up process three times before I got into OSX.
Then I shut down OSX just to try it again... same exact results. It took three restarts to be able to boot up again. Does anybody know what might cause something like this? The only thing I can think of is that maybe something is up with the RAM. I did upgrade the RAM to 2x2 gig of OWC memory a few months back, but never saw anything like this happening. When the computer is running I haven't noticed any strange issues.

Dec 9, 2007I have this file that has appeared in my trash bin, this file stays there when I empty the trash. The icon shows full. When I try to "get info" on the file, nothing happens. I drag it out onto the desktop, and it disappears.

Oct 27, 2009There is a certain file in my trash bin that won't delete, I don't believe it is locked or anything, it just says, "The operation can�t be completed because the item �sixtyforce� is in use."
"sixtyforce" was this emulator that I downloaded, but it was the older version of it, so I wanted to delete it, but that message keeps coming up.
OS X :: Recovered File In Trash Can?
Oct 31, 2009I just woke up and noticed that I have a Recovered File in my trash can. It has a "Temp File AAA", ProJlib, Imllib, something else, and another folder containing some quicktime stuff and a bunch of other things. I am not sure what it is as it wasn't there when I went to sleep a few hours ago. I clicked get info and all the stuff says it says last activity was on oct 28 at 5:27 pm. Is this from the daily scripts the mac runs around 3 in the am? I secure emptied the trash already too. Also, Onyx says my weekly and daily scripts were run at 7:15 and 7:30 am....today. Is that normal for them to run just as I turn on my cpu from sleep?

Aug 7, 2010I'm trying to secure-empty-trash a large backup disk image, about 275 gigs. During the process I had put the computer to sleep a couple times. After that, it seemed to be making no progress. I tried to stop the process so I could try again, and now it says

Stopping..."
and has said that for hours with no apparent progress on the status bar. Is there anything I can do get it to finish the process, or to actually stop so I can try again?
OS X :: File With Odd Characters In Its Name Won't Delete From Trash
Nov 6, 2008I was in the process of deleting Bioshock from a Windows fat32 drive while in OS X on my January 2008 Mac pro when it was unable to do so due permissions on some of the files and folder, so I just placed the whole bioshock folder back on the fat32 formatted drive, however ever since there has been a file in Trash labeled â€â€â€â€â€.�� that wont be emptied, I do not receive a error message when I try to empty it, it just remains in there.
I am unable to use the get info right click option as when I do so the â€â€â€â€â€.�� file vanishes for a few minutes and then just reappears in the Trash.
I am unable to move the file any where as when I try to do so it is as if I have not clicked on anything and the os does not acknowledge that anything has occurred.

May 31, 2009See attached screenshot, I don't even know what that character is in the file name. Anyway it's always in my trash no matter how many times I click "Empty Trash". Don't know what this file is, or how it was made on Jan 1st, 1904.

Jun 22, 2009I have a file that appears in the trash after every boot that can not be deleted, but when you drag it to the desktop it disappears. It seems to be the only way to remove it. You get no error message anytime. The file just has a bunch of ~~~~~ for identification. What caused this and how do you remove it? New 2009 3.06 iMac running latest version of Leopard. No issues at all with machine.

Feb 3, 2010My problem is with 300+ files in 2 folders that are left over from mac 9. They are in the trash, and are now locked, utterly. When I try to empty the trash, the error message says "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." As you may know, when dealing with multiple "disks" (read: partitions), Mac X puts a .Trash or .Trashes folder on each disk. The trash folders on my computer are located on the following paths:
/users/(my name)/.Trash
/volumes/HD_1/.Trashes/501.................

Feb 4, 2009I have a new MAC with Leopard 10.5. I attached a western digital external disk which has 4 partions. In one of the partitions I copied from my MS PC various documents. I now want to delete them by sending them to the trash. when i move them there, nothing happens as they still remain on the disk. All docs are with the read/write permission. I'm the only user and the docs were placed there with the same user profile that now wants to get rid of them. I also downloaded the TRASHiT software, but the files and folder still do not get moved/killed. What else can I do? I would like to avoid the easy way out which I would presume would be to format the disk again...
